Aug 12 New Part 1 - Noida Golf Course
August & September 2012 H LE iN NE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE NOIDA GOLF CLUB Please be introduced to the members of the Noida Golf Club Management Board Mr. Rakesh Bahadur, IAS President Maj Gen H K Sinha (Retd) Hony. Secretary Brig Ashish Dube (Retd) Mr. Sanjiv Saran, IAS Vice President Mr. K Srinivaasan Cdr S K Sud (Retd) Mr. Brijendra Sahay, IAS (Retd) Founder President, NGC Mr. Rakesh Agnihotri Golf Captain Mr. Jasjeet Singh FIRST TEE The month of July and August had its full share of excitement with the Noida Golf Club election and the constitution of the Management Board. Added to this, the resignation of the Secretary and the expected change in catering services created a piquant situation. Consequently the Management Board decided to nominate Honorary Secretary and took some decisions to address existing critical problems. Wedding ceremonies, over - crowding of vehicles inside the main gate, members not adhering to expected Golf Club norms were not the only problems in managing the Club, but it was enough to deal with persistent drags on members’ quality of enjoyment in the grandeur of the Golf Club. It was a pleasant surprise when the President, Mr. Rakesh Bahadur, IAS announced in the Management Board meeting about the forthcoming projects: a new car park and a new golf course near the Expressway, under the aegis of the Noida Golf Course. Today, the issue is not guidance but of governance by ushering in more clarity and abolishing adhocism in day-to-day activities of the club. The current scenario also demands swift reform in general administration, optimal utilization of current resources and curbing unproductive activities. The efforts may take a few weeks to bear fruit, but it will be worth the wait. Maj Gen H K Sinha (Retd.) Honorary Secretary Mr. Umesh Dubey Mr. Joseph Koshy PAGE 3 August & September 2012 The ‘Big M’ of American Golf A close look at the golfing geniuses and their skills that shaped the game of golf We read earlier that in Dec 1894 the United States Golf Association (USGA) was founded. A year later CB Macdonald won a victory in the association's first Amateur Championship. It was held at New Port in Oct 1895. However, the next was a twenty one year old Englishman named Horace Rawlins, who beat nine fellow professionals to become the first United States Open Champion. Although it is now one of the most coveted titles in golf, The US Open was little more than an after thought, earning its first winner only a $50 Gold Medal and $150 dollars in cash. CB Macdonald, however, continued to have an everlasting influence on the game. He was America's first great golf course architect. It was CB who coined the term “Golf Architect”.In 1892, he laid out a few short holes on the Illinois estate of Senator John B Farwell. He also laid a nine hole course in the Chicago Golf Course. In 1895, he unveiled a new club, the Chicago Golf Club, Wheaton Illinois, that became the first eighteen-hole course in America. Over the next 30 years, he designed other courses as well but his undisputed masterpiece was on the eastern end of Long Island, the National Golf Links of America. Even a century later, it continues to rank among the top twenty courses in America. THE NATIONAL GOLF LINKS OF AMERICA CB was a notorious slicer. In the Chicago Golf Club's holes, he favoured the left to right drift of his shots --- Spray the ball to the right and your worst penalty was light rough; spray it to left and you were flailing through a corn field. Since this inequity was simply too severe, a three word phrase made its debut in the rule book of 1899: “Out of Bounds”. Thereafter, those whose shots flew too far a field were allowed to re-tee the ball at a penalty of one stroke. THE GREAT TRIUMVIRATE When the US Open came to the Chicago Golf Club in 1900, one player's name stood out - HarryVarden. He was soft spoken stylist from Isle of Jersyin England. He could fade the ball, draw it, knock it down or loft it up, but most of all draw it straight –very straight. The two players who would give Harry a game were the Englishman JH Jailor and Scotsman James Braid. Collectively, the three of them won 16 of the 21 British Open. They became known as “The Great Triumvirate”. But Varden was the greatest. It was he that transformed the GOLFSWING. Not only did they stand open (like cricketers) but employed a great deal of wrist action and made contact slightly on the upswing (rather than on the down swing). Here the club went above the shoulders, extending to head-height. Thus the ball was lofted high into air as opposed to the low-flying projectiles of Old &YoungTom. Varden produced bestsellers in which he described his methods in intricate detail” The Complete Golfer” first published in 1905. He also had a profound effect on golf commerce. Equipment maker A G Spalding paidVarden £ 900 9 when winning prize for British Open was £ 30). To make a nine month long publicity tour of the States promoting the company's hot new gutty ball “theVarden Flyer”. PAGE 4 August & September 2012 Energy rocks Shubhkamna’s Caddy Tournament One of the biggest purse tournaments for caddies, the Shubhkamna Advert Caddy Tournament witnessed amazing display of skill, combined with true spirit of sportsmanship The Noida Golf Course witnessed an eventful day with the Shubhkamna Advert Caddy Tournament kicking off amidst tremendous enthusiasm and energy on July 9, 2012. It was the biggest purse tournament for caddies, where 101 Caddies played in three different categories. The participants exuded the true spirit of sportsmanship and played as if they were having the time of their life. Commenting on the tournament, Mr. Piyush Tiwari, Director of Shubhkamna Advert said: “Shubhkamna Advert has taken this initiative so that all the talented caddies who are underprivileged get a platform to showcase their skills at this level. We would further screen the best players and take charge for their training at the highest level by the best professionals available in the country.” Shubhkamna Advert organized this tournament as its corporate social responsibility initiative and will continue doing so every year for the betterment of the game. Most of the projects promoted by Shubhkamna are golf based housing societies. That is the reason why the company wants to promote the game amongst the people of Noida. WAITING FOR THEIR GAME HAPPY WINNERS PAGE 5 August & September 2012 Anadeep Sukhdev A total of Rs. 10 Lacs was spent for this tournament. Commenting on the tournament, Colonel Uberoi, the then Secretary, Noida Golf Course, said, “We are very happy that all our caddies got a chance to display their skills. This is a unique initiative and their dreams would not have come true without the support that Shubhkamna Advert provided. We call upon more corporate to take such steps for promotion of this game throughout the country. The day saw the below mentioned players win the title in their respective categories. Category A B Name Anadeep Sukhdev Category Name C Pro Krishan Pal Pradeep Kumar The award for the “best player of the tournament” went to Pradeep Kumar. Krishan Pal Pradeep Kumar ENJOYING A GOOD BREAKFAST RULES CLINIC Caddies are professionals who help players play the game by carrying their load and helping them read the correct lines so that the players do well and emerge winners. Without their contribution, the game of golf is incomplete. However, despite possessing the skills, they are not financially sound enough to play the game. Such tournaments give them a perfect platform to showcase their talent and make it big on the national stage. Shubhkamna Advert is dedicated to take the game to the next level in Noida. With this objective in mind, the company will be organizing more tournaments and professional workshops for underprivileged caddies and school children at various levels. WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT PAGE 6 August & September 2012 Olympic fever at NGC elections The Noida Golf Course elections that took place at the same time as the Olympics, witnessed similar levels of enthusiasm and participation EAGER VOTERS MR. PIYUSH TIWARI THE LADY CAPTAIN It was a remarkable coincidence that the much-awaited Noida Golf Course (NGC) elections happened on July 28, 2012, at a time when the London Olympics also took off.The same spirit and fervour of a big event was visible, combined with high hopes, excitement, enthusiasm and, of course, silent prayers. At the same time, the competitive spirit comprising of pulsating palptations, jittery hearts and shaky half smiles – all signs of positive pressure – were visible. REGISTRATION POINT With the big question, “Will I, will I not make it?” in their minds, the representatives received undaunting encouragement with the cheering of hordes of their supporters. It was nothing short of the Olympics fever where whether you win or lose is definitely a matter of prestige, but what is even more important is that you play the game well... perform well. It is the players’ eclectic energy and efforts that will always be lauded. PAGE 7 August & September 2012 FOUNDER PRESIDENT MR. BRIJENDER SAHAY, IAS CASTING HIS VOTE MR. R. K.YADAV ANNOUNCES THE RESULTS BALLOT BOXES COUNTING OF VOTES JUSTICE GARG AND HIS TEAM After all, elections, sports, and life itself are all based on the same pattern: Win some, lose some. Winners do win the game. They do achieve the fame. It does take a lot of humility to win and a lot of courage to lose. The name and fame earned by the winners may be passed on to the losers in the nest round, a phenomena expressed beautifully in these lines by superstar Rajesh Khanna: Izzatein, shohratein, chahatein, ulfatein... Sab kuchh iss duniya mein rehta nahien... Aaj hum hein jahaan, Kal koi aur tha yahaan... Yeh bhi ik daur hai Woh bhi ik daur tha... So, Ladies, and Gentlemen, post our prelude, and our prologue to our NGC Elections, we present to you the scenario at he Club from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. 10:00 am -12:00 noon: Festive mood at the entrance gate. Families of candidates in last-minute canvassing action. Snag in the computers - long queues of voters inconvenienced. 12:00 noon: Good rainfall - good for India but not for voters. Number of voters trickle down. 12:00 noon -2:00 pm: Golf carts are arranged for members to come in. 2:00 pm-4:00 pm: More voters, voting ends. 5:00 pm-6:30 pm: Counting of votes; finally, Justice Garg, CRO, announces the results. A very special thank you to Justice OP Garg, CRO of the NGC Election Organising Committee. Also, an equally special vote of thanks to Mr Sanjiv Saran, Vice President NGC, Mr AC Sharma, CLA - Noida Authority, Mr RK Yadav, City Magistrate, Mr DB Malik, GM, Noida Authority and his team for doing such a wonderful job of conducting the NGC Elections ever so smoothly.
