Middletown Mayor Lawrence Mulligan Jr. presents a proclamation to Logan Kiser declaring Thursday, June 5, Logan Kiser Day in honor of his donating his First Communion gift of $50 to the Middletown Community Foundation. Boy’s donation proves kids can make a difference When eight-year-old Logan Kiser told his parents he wanted to use his First Communion money—$50— to help other kids in his school pay for their lunches, they were touched. As it turned out, the PTA at his elementary school had already taken care of that. So Logan still insisted he wanted to help others with this money. It was then that he remembered his little brother getting free books each month from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program funded by the Middletown Community Foundation. “My brother Grant is always so excited when he gets those books,” Logan said. “I thought it would be really neat to help other kids get them too.” His parents, John and Avinne, wanted to encourage their young philanthropist and matched his gift with their own $50. A friend of the family also pitched in and added another $100. Now Logan had $200 to donate. The Kisers contacted MCF about Logan’s desire to help other kids get the books and learned that his donation would fund books for eight children each month for one year, according to Duane Gordon, MCF executive director. “Logan is the youngest donor we have, and shows that the next generation can make a difference now,” said Gordon. “Kids like Logan set the example,” he added. When asked why he didn’t just use the money to buy something for himself, Logan replied: “I’ve already got enough stuff.” Our Staff, Our Promises We have served for over 25 years as We connect people who care with causes that matter in Franklin, a community leader, catalyst and resource for philanthropy. A World War II veteran, Walter received a degree from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor’s in engineering, moving to Middletown in 1948 and working for American Aggregates Corp. He retired 41 years later as vice president of the corporation’s American Materials Co. subsidiary. His wife, Nellie, earned a bachelor’s in journalism and master’s in library science, both from the University of Kentucky. She worked as a librarian and also served as the Middletown Journal’s society columnist throughout the 1950s. After a 64-year marriage, Nellie passed away in 2009, followed by her husband in 2012. They wanted to continue supporting their favorite charities after they were gone, so they designated the residual assets of the estate – the amount remaining after all other bequests and estate expenses were Walter and Nellie Evans paid – to charity, specifically Atrium Medical Center and the Middletown Community Foundation, which received the funds in late 2013. When Walter specified to Michael D. Stautberg, Atrium Medical Center Foundation president, during his estate planning that the couple wanted a portion of their estate to fund non-medical related scholarships in addition to supporting the hospital, Mike recommended the Middletown Community Foundation to fulfill that wish. In part due to this suggestion, the Evans’ estate now supports two worthy causes: education seminars for Atrium caregivers in neuroscience, rehabilitation and behavioral health; and college scholarships for area students, administered by Middletown Community Foundation. “Although the needs are great for patients served by Atrium Medical Center Foundation, our guiding principle always is to be a good steward for our donors, helping them to fulfill their philanthropic goals,” Mike said. “We’re very grateful for all the good that Walter and Nellie Evans are doing for Atrium Medical Center and our community.” T. Duane Gordon, Middletown Community Foundation Executive Director, added: “This unique bequest exhibits the partnership that multiple organizations have to best serve our shared donors. We so very much appreciate Walter and Nellie’s decision to help us help local students further their education. KNOWledge SERIES In 2013, the Middletown Community Foundation held a number of informational sessions for its members called XLI/23;PIHKI7IVMIW7TIEOIVWMRGPYHIH&IRKEPW,IEH Coach Marvin Lewis, who spoke about his Learning Is Cool school initiative which the Community Foundation helps fund in Middletown City Schools, and Dollywood Foundation President David Dotson, who discussed Dolly Partons Imagination Library which the Community Foundation uses to send a book a month to any child who registers in Franklin, Madison, Monroe, Trenton and Middletown to help prepare them for kindergarten. Members The following individuals are those who make the Middletown operating dollars and how much we have to pay in rent, supplies, Community Foundation possible — our Members! We are a training and other expenses, which your Membership fills. To membership organization, and we rely on you to support us with your time, talents and treasure. You volunteer on various committees, on our Board of Trustees, as scholarship judges and at events and other functions when our small but mighty staff needs a helping hand. You share your advice and services. You attend our Annual Meeting, where you vote to elect our trustees. And, perhaps most significantly, you give of your financial resources. Annual memberships levels range from $50 to $1,000 and above, although gifts of any size are happily accepted throughout the year. While all of the Foundation’s personnel costs and most of our operating expenses are covered by the small 1% administrative fee we assess against all of the charitable endowments we manage, there is a balance between the amount those fees generate for our our Members, we say THANK YOU! To those who have yet to become Members, we encourage you to send in your tax-deductible gift today to help make the Foundation’s work to improve the Franklin, Madison, Monroe, Trenton and Middletown areas possible! Following are listed our Members for 2013 and 2014 (as of our publication deadline). If someone gave at a different Membership level in one year or the other, we listed them at the higher of the two. We also attempted to use your names as you indicated you wished to be recognized on your most recent Membership form, but we are merely human and apt to make mistakes. Therefore, if we typed a wrong letter, listed you at the wrong level or accidentally omitted your name, please forgive our error but also notify us so we may correct our records. 2013 & 2014 DIAMOND PLATINUM AK Steel Foundation Carl and Jennifer Batliner Lou and Joyce Christy Janet and Ken Cohen The Wilbur Cohen Family Larry and Carol Colclasure Colclasure Paving Inc.
