GETTING STARTED
A tandem is a big-ticket item with the power to improve your life, and finding the
right tandem is the most important step you’ll take. If you found this consumer guide
at a local bicycle store, you have discovered a shop recognized as one of
America’s Top-20%. Because these shops are committed
to meeting the evolving needs of discerning cyclists,
we have authorized them to represent our tandems,
distribute price and specifications, discuss options and
assist you with your order.
If instead you requested this consumer guide by
writing or phoning Santana, an accompanying letter
provides the name and location of your nearest Santana
Test Ride Center.
teaches them how to address the special needs and
concerns of tandem shoppers. Dealers who use our
First-Ride™ program will start by allowing both of you
to “learn the ropes” by riding on the back of a tandem
captained by an expert. Following this pair of instructive
rides, the two of you will be prepared for your first ride
together. A Test Ride Center will then provide you with
a Santana that fits so you can spend an hour getting to
know tandeming.
YOUR FIRST RIDE
WHAT KIND OF TANDEM?
Is a test ride necessary? Although we think it makes
perfect sense to buy a Santana sight-unseen (based on
your dealer’s reputation and our undisputed leadership),
we realize many couples will want to try before they buy.
Because we want your first tandem ride to be safe,
instructive and enjoyable, please don’t rent, borrow from
a friend or settle for an around-the-block “spin” from an
untrained dealer. Instead, we’ve worked hard with a
few dedicated dealers to establish Santana Test Ride
Centers. Besides a fleet of at least five tandems, these
dealers have received comprehensive training including
our First-Ride™ program, which
An important question is what type of tandem is
best for you? Road tandems are our fastest, most efficient
and best-selling models, and are capable of taking you
over hardpacked dirt roads. With stronger and more
versatile 26-inch wheels, our Enduro tandems make
excellent touring machines and excel at all types of
riding; including paved roads, unpaved roads and even
rutted trails. Finally, Santana’s All-terrain tandems are
exactly that—the most stable and durable go-anywhere
tandems available.
Even if you’re not yet sure you want a Santana,
consider that an awkward first experience on a lesser
2
tandem might dissuade you or your partner from
tandeming altogether. Regardless of your budget, test
ride a Santana before you buy—no other tandem is
safer, easier or more pleasurable to ride.
Finally, by arranging an appointment before you
visit, your Santana Test Ride Center will be happy
to schedule the undivided personal attention of a
knowledgeable specialist.
Over the phone, they will need to know your inseam
measurements (see our sizing chart on the opposite
page), and the style of tandem you’re most interested in
(road, enduro, or all-terrain).
By following these steps, our Test Ride Center will
have the appropriate tandems ready for your arrival.
SHOPPING MISTAKES
Because single bikes in a given price range have
virtually identical performance, it’s hard to make a bad
choice. Most bicycle shoppers, therefore, have come
to rely on such easy-to-judge criteria as componentry,
convenience, discount and image. However, because
the performance of tandems differs dramatically, we urge
you to avoid the following tandem-shopping pitfalls:
Componentry shoppers select bikes based on their
components. While this method works on singles, on
tandems it ignores the biting issues—like the frame, fork
and wheels. Besides, when you obsess over a label, it’s
far too easy to settle for less-suitable yet more-familiar
single-bike componentry. Buying a bike for its components
is like choosing a car for its stereo. Our advice—forget
component specs and buy overall performance.
Convenience shoppers limit themselves to the
selection and expertise of a favorite nearby shop.
Unfortunately, most shops don’t carry tandems. And
when they do have one, it’s usually from one of their
major suppliers. What’s wrong with a major brand
tandem? They are notoriously short-lived—ask anyone
who bought a tandem marketed by Specialized, Fuji,
Litespeed, GT, Univega, Fisher and Schwinn. Who’s
next? It’s anyone’s guess. This instant obsolescence brings
service problems, discontinued parts and poor resale
values. Because Santana dealers make a substantial
commitment to tandeming, finding one is always worth
the effort.
Discount shoppers sacrifice all for the “killer
deal.” Because many shoppers expect discounts, major
brands post inflated list prices. Because Santana uses
straightforward pricing, our dealers can’t counter with a
bogus discount. Consumers who look for the best value
instead of the biggest discount always win.
Finally, prestige shoppers may imagine that a
celebrity framebuilder famous for head-turning singles
can provide a better tandem. Think twice. How big is the
alignment table? What tube-sets will they use? Will you
have a choice of materials? Do they offer the features
you need? What do they know about tandem geometry?
How many tandems have they built? Twenty? 400?
Today, over 50,000 discriminating enthusiasts enjoy
the benefit of Santana's dedication and experience.
When it comes to performance, longevity, value and
workmanship, nothing beats a Santana.
DON’T GET SHORTCHANGED
Because less than one out of every 1,000 bicycles is
a tandem, even the cheapest two-seaters are affected by
the high cost of limited production—non-robotic welding,
special tubing and unusual parts. Further, because
tandem owners confirm that your tandem should be at
least as good as your best single bike, a good question
to ask is how much would it cost today to buy two new
singles. A dirt-cheap tandem, at $900, costs three times
more than a pair of $150 cruisers with a similar level of
performance (a 3-to-1 ratio).
As prices rise, however, this cost-to-performance
ratio improves. For example, a $2,000 economy tandem
is only twice as expensive as two $500 singles with
comparable performance (2:1). And when you spend
more, the cost-to-performance ratio of tandem ownership
becomes substantially more attractive.
A $3,500 tandem, for instance (where our line
begins) will perform admirably—and only costs 50%
more than a pair of $1,200 solo bikes (11/2:1). For most
customers, this is a sensible starting point. And for those
ready to spend $5,000 (or more), a tandem will actually
cost less, weigh less and outperform a pair of singles
(better than 1:1). This superior cost-to-performance ratio
explains why tandem buyers typically budget $4,000–
$6,000.
STICKER SHOCK?
While spending $3,500 or more might seem
like a lot to a first-time buyer, tandem enthusiasts
overwhelmingly agree that buying a competent machine
the first time around is a lot smarter than losing money
when reselling a lesser tandem that failed to meet your
needs. If you don’t have the budget, get a good used
tandem instead. A six-year-old Santana with tandemspecific tubing and components (which can be found
on eBay for half its replacement price) will cost less,
outperform and outlast any of today’s economy tandems.
Another possibility may be an outdated demonstrator.
When available, a lightly used test ride tandem has a
new bike warranty and can save you a few hundred
dollars. You or your dealer can call us toll free at

Because captains support the stoker while starting
and stopping, captains must be able to straddle a
top tube with a stance wide enough to clear rotating pedals. If the sizing chart indicates compatibility
with two sizes, the bar centered to your measurement is generally the best choice. However, if your
leg length is not proportional to your height (and
you need a longer or shorter top tube), it is smart
to consider the other alternative. Note: because our
chart assumes a rigid fork, if you will captain a 26”

one full size smaller.

How to measure
yourselves
To determine frame size, measure your actual inseam (crotch to
floor, without shoes). To measure
accurately, slide a skinny book or
clipboard up along the wall between your legs as high as possible (until your heels begin to
leave the floor).
After obtaining your measurements, Check them against the
charts at left. You and your partner will probably discover that
one or more of our stock sizes
fits. If not, don’t fret, Santana
makes custom tandems, too (see
page 25). The charts at left are in

explain why literature from other builders
rarely discuss a tandem’s comfort and stability; issues
of far greater importance. At Santana, where every
member of our design team spends an equal amount
of time captaining and stoking, we realize the limiting
factor of a tandem’s performance, and how much it
will be enjoyed, is more often than not determined by
a stoker’s comfort or the captain’s ability to maintain
control during challenging situations. A point of
agreement between Santana and other builders is the
desirability of frame stiffness. While racers value stiffness
for its competitive advantage (pedaling energy that
bends or distorts a frame is mostly wasted) a discerning
captain will also discover that a twisting frame is hard
to control. Unfortunately, frame stiffness—a prerequisite
for efficiency and stability—makes a tandem less
comfortable, especially for the stoker. This conflict puts
two desired qualities (stiffness and comfort) at odds.
While others favor one attribute over the other, Santana
believes this unfortunate choice can be avoided. To
provide both riders with uncompromised efficiency and
comfort, Santana’s comprehensive solution includes
tandem-specific geometries, superior materials and
exceptional craftsmanship.

4 When builders graft
a single bike’s geometry onto a tandem the resulting
bike becomes a bit skittish. And while some captains
are initially captivated by a tandem that only seems to
be faster, the very real downside of this illusion is “stoker
steer”—where the slightest lateral move of the stoker
causes an undesired alteration in the tandem’s direction.
Although “quick steering” and “single bike handling”
are great sounding claims, conscientious builders will
eventually realize that a bicycle with two riders deserves
a more sophisticated geometry. Compared to single
bikes or tandems mischaracterized as “fast,” Santana’s
tandems have a bit more fork rake. Increased rake acts
to dampen stoker-induced steering—allowing a captain
to experience a greater degree of steering control
with far less effort. An additional cause for Santana’s
superior handling is a bottom bracket height lower than
that used by all other manufacturers, but not so low as
to cause you to scrape a pedal. The difference may
be less than 5mm, but it is enough to further improve
the bike’s stability. Lower bottom bracket heights also
increase straddle clearance, making it easier to fit riders
to a Santana.
By building our bikes with a touch less bottom
bracket height and a bit more fork rake, control is
enhanced, allowing the captain to concentrate on
pedaling (or sightseeing) instead of steering. A bike with
confidence-building stability allows duos to maintain a
predictable line while riding in a group, and inspires
them to descend hills with greater speed. And on longer
rides, where fatigue becomes a factor, a bike that’s

SOFT-RIDE
easier to control enables higher average speeds and
earlier finishing times. Finally, in the event of a road
hazard, mishap or blowout, control of a tandem is most
easily maintained on a Santana—stable bikes prefer to
stay upright.
SUPERIOR MATERIALS
Because stiffness is essential to controlling any bike,
especially one with two riders and a long wheelbase,
tandems built by Santana routinely use some of the
largest tubing diameters available. This is especially
important for the tubes that connect the drivetrain and
wheels, i.e. the fork blades, down tube, bottom tube and
chainstays. No other builder uses larger tubes in these
essential areas.
Increasing the diameter of frame tubing while
keeping the wall thickness constant, however, gives
a bike a harsher ride. Because comfort is invariably
proportional to the wall thickness of the thinnest section
of tube, the first part of the solution to this problem is
double-butted tubing. For this reason, every tube on
every model is internally double-butted, a claim no other
major tandem manufacturer can make.
Santana’s second unique solution to the stiffness/
comfort conundrum requires the strongest possible alloys.
How can tubing strength affect comfort? By selecting the
strongest seamless alloys, larger tubes can be custom
drawn to exceptionally thin gauges.
To this end Santana has worked extensively with
Easton, Columbus, Eco and VyaTek to create the best
tandem-specific tubesets ever drawn. Santana is proud
to say that we build all of our frames from large-diameter,
double-butted tubes that are produced in thinner
gauges than tubes used by other builders—a difference
that provides an unbeatable ride quality. Further,
among tandem builders, Santana alone uses Easton’s
Scandium, Columbus’ Spirit Niobium and VyaTek’s
ultra-high modulus carbon.
Tubing that can provide phenomenal control and
stiffness without numbing harshness isn’t cheap, and is,
accordingly, the most expensive in use today. Superior
tubing, a hallmark of Santana tandems, allows a
balance of weight, stiffness and comfort that is beyond
the reach of others.
EXPERT CRAFTSMANSHIP
Why doesn’t everyone else use tubing of this
quality? Beyond the price difference (an additional
$300-500 per frame), tubing this thin is considered
by many builders to be unworkable. Because our
employees have been with Santana for an average term
exceeding ten years (the longest in the industry), and
have completed college classes to expand their welding
and machining prowess, Team Santana consistently
creates the seemingly impossible.

TRAVEL TANDEM TECHNOLOGY
Prior to the utilization of couplers, performance tandems wouldn’t fit inside a small
car or private plane. Today, however, high-tech frame couplers allow a full-sized,
full-performance tandem to be stowed within a suitcase-sized package. Frequent
flyers will appreciate how a packed Stowaway lives up to its name by traveling through airports unnoticed—establishing a nine year history of free flights for
tandems. On the way to and from airports our optional Airliner SafeCase™ slides
into taxis, shuttle-vans and tiny rental cars—all without fuss or question.
A new challenge
Building a coupler-equipped frame can be an
arduous task. Some builders first weld the frame together
and then cut it apart to add couplers. Others struggle
with jigs that can’t accommodate couplers. At Santana,
the world’s most-experienced builder of bikes with
S&S couplers, the process was streamlined years
ago.
Along the way, unique fixtures were
developed to avoid extra steps, reduce costs
and improve accuracy. Today, pre-welded
assemblies allow us to jig a Stowaway™
frame as easily as a standard frame.
Further, custom drawn coupler tubes
provide a lighter and stiffer frame with
optimized ride quality (all other tandem
builders still attach couplers to plain gauge
tubes). Finally, after collaborating with S&S
to develop the world’s first coupled tandems
built from titanium and aluminum, Santana
worked with S&S to create a lighter set of
stainless couplers for steel alloy
frames.
How does this technology
affect you? First, if you’re concerned
about price, Santana buys
couplers in larger quantities and
installs them more efficiently. Second,
if you are worried about reliability and ease of use,
no one (not even S&S) has expended more time and effort
testing couplers and coupler-equipped frames. Third, if
you are troubled by the prospect of excess weight or
diminished ride quality, Santana has worked with S&S
to create lighter sets of couplers, and with various tubing
mills to create lighter connecting tubes. Our exclusive
tubes and couplers create travel tandems that are
significantly lighter, stiffer and more comfortable—a
difference you will continue to appreciate on
each and every ride.
COMPARISON WEIGHT
Santana’s coupled tandem frames, built with
oval couplers and double-butted coupler
tubes, are typically 2 pounds lighter than
flexier designs with plain-gauge tubes. To the
listed comparison weights of Santana’s standard models add 2 pounds for steel couplers,
1 pound for aluminum or titanium couplers.

THE OVAL SOLUTION
The advent of travel tandems
allowed history to repeat itself. Builders
using S&S couplers faced a centuryold choice: one big bottom tube or two
smaller ones? While various alternatives
can do the job (illustrated on next page),
the competition-proven twin-tube design
is both lighter and stiffer than the older
“drainpipe” design. Why did tandem builders
who would never dream of using an outdated
design for their standard tandems
revert to a large round tube for their
S&S tandems? Profit. Because doublebutted tubes, another pair of couplers
and the required additional labor are
all expensive, some builders ignore the
added comfort and performance of the twintube design in order to save $300.
Santana’s new oval couplers alter the cost-benefit
equation of travel tandems by allowing a light and
efficient frame without the additional tube and couplers.
Following years of development and testing, oval
couplers are now an option for CroMoly, Niobium,
Scandium, titanium and carbon Stowaway™ tandems.

Now that Santana has lighter S&S/oval couplers,
how can other tandem builders compete? Any builder
who satisfies the stringent standards enforced by S&S
can obtain Santana’s oval couplers, or the aluminum
couplers S&S produces exclusively for us. Most builders
will find it cost effective to have Santana pre-weld these
pieces onto our lighter, custom-drawn coupler tubes.
Santana sells its exclusive items to other builders?
Certainly. For 30 years Santana has underwritten
the development of an extensive range of tandemspecific materials and components, and then shared
these advanced products with other builders.
UNDERSTANDING EFFICIENCY
As the front rider applies pedal force (green arrow), the tightened
timing chain bows a tandem’s bottom tube. While some have
guessed that the ends of the bottom tube are drawn upward towards the taut portion of the chain, bottom bracket bearings neutralize the vertical movement. Instead, a tensioned timing chain
bows the frame horizontally to shorten the distance between the
ends of the two bottom bracket axles (red arrows).
POOR—big round tube
The Origin of Couplers
When viewed from above, the captain’s pedaling force tightens the
chain and bows the bottom tube sideways (the depicted straight
edge conveys the degree of distortion). The flexy bottom tube of an
1890s tandem allowed strong sprinters to derail their timing chain!

S&S COUPLERS:
THE FAMILY ALBUM
The original S&S stainless couplers, Identifiable
by their long points, could be brazed into any steel
frame. These heavy yet ornate couplers are still used
by others.
When S&S introduced titanium couplers, Santana
was the first to use them for tandems. Very light, these
couplers are Tig-welded instead of brazed.
Next came S&S aluminum couplers: an exclusive
product line initiated, co-designed and tested by Santana.
As compared to the lightest steel travel tandems from
other builders, these couplers combined with aluminum
frame tubes are 4–5 pounds lighter!
The newest S&S product is also co-designed by
Santana. A better solution for steel frames, these stainless
steel couplers can be welded more efficiently with less
heat distortion. Santana uses these light and exclusive
couplers to give our CroMoly / Niobium travel tandems
an unmistakable edge.
HOW IT RIDES
Santana’s Stowaway uses lighter double-butted tubing and a larger, stiffer down tube to create a portable tandem with uncompromised performance.
The short front section of other designs preclude the use of
double-butted tubes. Further, they most often use a smaller,
flexier downtube and an inefficient round bottom tube.
The advent of tandem racing (an Olympic event from 1896-1972)
caused builders to replace the original bicycle-sized bottom tube
with a stiffer and heavier 2-inch “drainpipe.” Inexpensive and easy
to build, this century-old design is still found on a few standard tandems and most travel tandems.
BETTER—twin tubes
By the 1920s, builders of the best tandems switched to side-by-side
double-butted tubes for greater resistance to bowing. Compared
to previous designs these frames were simultaneously lighter and
stiffer. Paired bottom tubes remain the best choice for travel tandems
with round couplers.
BEST—oval tube
In the 1930s British builder Claude Butler saved two additional
ounces of weight (and a couple of hours of construction time) when
he replaced a racing frame’s side-by-side tubes with a wide oval.
Now that oval couplers exist, oval bottom tubes are the best answer
for all tandems.
HOW IT SHIPS
Just as important, Santana’s frame separates into
stronger components, enabling a packed Stowaway
to survive the rigors of travel.
Not only is the ride quality crippled, the resulting pieces are
vulnerable to shipping damage and can be tweaked out of
alignment with a three foot fall from a baggage cart.
The story of frame couplers dates back twelve years when
Shirley Smilanick, the wife of a workaholic, decided
she wanted a real vacation. On her previous vacation
attempts, even when she was successful in prying Steve
away from his machine shop, he proceeded to spend most
of their time riding his old Bianchi. Booking passage for
herself on a Mediterranean cruise, Shirley was sure she’d
found the perfect answer—an exotic vacation far removed
from her husband’s work and bike.
As Steve carefully studied the colorful brochure she’d
placed in front of him Shirley said, “There’s room for a
handsome guy in my stateroom. Care to join me?” And
Steve did join her. But only after he’d spent countless
hours developing a way to sneak his Bianchi onto the
cruise ship. After hack-sawing his frame in half, he machined some unique fittings to allow reconnection.
A decade later Steve’s firm, S&S Machine, sells thousands of his patented couplers to certified craftsmen
around the world, who weld them into frames that allow
customers to take their bikes along on vacation. Steve’s
largest customer? Santana.
Of course, before S&S frame couplers were invented thousands of owners had already taken tandems on airplanes.
A Santana in its original shipping carton was an easy fit,
even on the smallest DC-9 or 737. While our oversize box
was an imposing thing to drag through a terminal, not one
tandem owner had been turned away or missed a flight.
Actually, the biggest hurdle was hauling the box to and
from the airport. And when tandem travel plans included
shuttles, taxis, small rental cars or commuter planes, (not
to mention cruise ships) a vacation could quickly become
a bit too stressful.
While couplers add a thousand dollars to the cost of a
tandem, Santana customers soon found a way to recoup
their investment. With a claimed success rate of over 99%,
they’ve discovered that a Stowaway™ tandem packed into
our SafeCase will fly for free—saving them up to $200 per
trip. While not everyone who buys a coupled tandem will be
able to project a profit, reduced airline fees plus worry-free
travel provide a compelling argument.
But what about Shirley? Did she and Steve find happiness? Absolutely. Since that first cruise they’ve shared
lots of romantic getaways. In addition to Steve’s shirts,
Shirley now packs their coupler-equipped tandem.

Bill’s TIPS FOR HASSLE FREE
AIRPORT CHECK-IN
Santana’s Bill and Jan McCready have checked tandems
onto over 200 flights. In 25 years they (and their tandems)
have never missed a flight. Additionally, they’ve coached
thousands of customers who have flown to Santana’s events.
Here’s Bill’s summation of what they’ve learned:
1. Don’t phone the airline.
Airline phone operators will only scare you by reciting
luggage limitations dictated by their smallest planes.
2. Book the right flights.
Loading 40 built tandems onto a Hawaiian Airlines inter-island flight
3. Don’t phone the airline.
YOUR TANDEM CAN FLY
Popular tandem adventures include Vermont, Hawaii
and the Pacific Coast. Or, since you only live once, try
a tour in Europe. Adventuresome couples might enjoy
an extended tour in New Zealand. Quite a few of our
customers have even used their tandems to circle the
globe (see back cover). Whatever your dream, your
Santana is ready, willing and able.

Traveling with a tandem is easy. When you need to
transport your Santana to a remote ride start, simply
remove the quick-release wheels to carry it within
hatchbacks, wagons, minivans and SUVs, or, on a
bicycle rack that mounts to a bumper, hatchback, trunk
or trailer hitch. Frequent travelers appreciate the extra
convenience and security of a car-top tandem carrier.
small car or private plane. Today, however, high-tech
frame couplers allow a full-sized, full-performance
tandem to be stowed within a suitcase-sized package
(see pages 6–7). Frequent flyers will appreciate how a
packed Santana Stowaway lives up to its name by
traveling through airports unnoticed—establishing a
decade long history of free flights for tandems. On the
way to and from airports our optional Airliner
SafeCase™ (opposite page) slides into taxis, shuttlevans and tiny rental cars—all without fuss or question.
BEFOR
E
Our customers often tell us their best vacations are
spent on their tandem. Why? They’re in the fresh air,
they see more, and as the miles sail by they share in
the adventure and satisfaction of traveling under their
own power. Many tandem riders fly to exotic destinations and ride from inn to inn. Because most couples
cycle thirty to fifty miles a day (two to four hours of
casual riding), they have plenty of time to visit points
of interest, observe local color and make new friends.
Even if you obtain reassurance (and you won’t), the check-in
agent at the airport is free to ignore it.
4. Pack smart.
Although airline agents never bother to measure a suitcase,
all checked luggage must be weighed and counted. Unless it
causes you to exceed the limitation of two free checked items
per ticketed passenger, keep your suitcases below the 50pound limit that triggers a $25–$50 nuisance fee. When a
suitcase exceeds 70 pounds, that fee jumps to $125. While
bike cases and sporting equipment can exceed the 70-pound
limit, items over 100 pounds won’t be accepted.
5. Don’t phone the airline.
If they tell you “no” and attach a memo to your reservation,
the agent at the counter will feel obliged to turn you away.
Why not call anonymously? When you call their toll-free
number, computers at the other end will often identify you,
and display your file to the agent, who is free to add notes.
6. Check-in super early.
Our most important tip is to show up a full hour earlier than
requested. This means arriving at the check-in counter 2-3
hours before your flight. Because airlines and their
employees are graded for getting planes dispatched “ON
SCHEDULE,” showing up late (especially with luggage that
can’t go through the conveyor) may cause check-in agents to
find a way to delay you or your bike until the following flight--which may not leave until the next day. More than one
tardy passenger has been instructed to drag their bike to a
distant airfreight counter.
7. Don’t phone the airline.
If enough people bother airlines with questions about tandems,
they’ll write new rules that make tandem travel tougher.
Airplanes? No
problem…
8. Be charming.
Since the check-in agent can ignore existing rules (or make
up new ones), why not SMILE and be the nicest customer
they’ve encountered all week? I always go through the entire
ID, frequent flier, and seat assignment pleasantries BEFORE
baggage is ever mentioned.
If your vacation involves airline tickets, you
have the option of taking your tandem on
the plane or shipping it ahead by truck.
When you want to subject your tandem to
the rigors of shipping, the column at left
shows three tried and true solutions.
9. Why cause a scene?

performance tandems wouldn’t fit inside a
8
Because larger tandem cases won’t fit in the cargo hold of a
“regional jet” with 4-across seating, check the size of your
case against the “How it Travels” section of the chart at
lower right. To ensure your tandem can travel with you,
search for flights on Orbitz.com, a web-site where seating
charts reveal everything you need to know.
At the airport
When flying to tandem rallies and tours (4-6 annually for the
past decade), Jan and I often take 3 or 4 full-sized tandems
PLUS 5 or 6 suitcases. While we almost always pay some
extra fees, it’s usually less than the published tariff. But after
an agent explains their calculation (I always ask nicely), I
simply pull out the credit card. And if I thought the charge was
too high (which has not yet happened), I’d simply argue it
later via the credit card company. Getting angry or causing
a scene at the counter—never a good strategy—would be
especially ill advised with today’s heightened security.
3-ways to ship conventional
tandems (w/O s&s couplers)
and unwrapping, the time required to pack or unpack
your tandem is cut in half.
GOT COUPLERS?
The ultimate answer for frequent flyers is a coupled
tandem (see pages 6-7) stowed within a normal looking
suitcase. Designed and built exclusively for Santana,
our Airliner SafeCase is a tough vault-like case with a
protective inner lining, interlocking edges, full-length
hinge, locking hasps and quick-release casters. With
casters removed, each individual exterior dimension
(27" x 33" x 14") falls within universal airline standards,
which allows the suitcase-shaped SafeCase to proceed
through airport luggage systems without a fuss. This is
why owners of this case slip through airports without
incurring a bicycle transport fee. The SafeCase is not only
better for airline travel, it also allows UPS shipment.
When you order a Stowaway tandem and a $599
SafeCase together, we’ll throw in QuickSwitch cable
unions and auto-extracting crankarm bolts. Further,
if you add the $350 FTS system and factory pre-assembly, we’ll assemble and adjust your new tandem
before carefully stowing it into its new travel case. The
combined SafeCase/FTS option allows UPS delivery.
How to pack a stowaway tandem in 15 minutes:
You’ll need the included S&S tool, allen wrenches, and
a standard pedal wrench.
An option to the SafeCase, Santana’s unique Foam
Tray System adds seven precision layers of
high-density foam to snugly encapsulate
your travel tandem’s pieces. FTS
provides superior protection from
damage due to impact, settling and
vibration. The unique system is so
simple that a young child understands
how each piece of your bike fits within
its own die-cut recess. The numbered
layers remove guesswork to allow secure
and efficient packing, even when your
travel schedule leaves you rushed
or tired. Best of all, because FTS
does away with tedious wrapping
1. After releasing the front brake cable, use optional
QuickSwitch cable unions to disconnect the rear brake
and gear cables.
2. Remove wheels (and their q-r skewers), seatposts,
pedals and stoker stem.
3. Slide the captain’s bar and stem off the top of the
fork (the fork remains in place).
4. Use the optional auto-extract bolts to remove four
crankarms.
5. Unscrew all couplers, freeing the frame tubes and
timing chain.
6. Insert the disassembled pieces of your tandem
into the matching die-cut recesses of the optional FTS/
SafeCase (if you elect to forgo FTS, add 20 minutes to
wrap and secure each piece).

Don’t other builders use Easton tubing? In an effort to stay competitive, Raleigh,
Co-Motion, and KHS now share heavier, generic aluminum tubes produced in
Taiwan. Others use a weaker 6000-series alloy, sometimes reinforced with a
misleading label (i.e. Zn-9000). Our advice? Unless the aluminum is from Easton,
steel is a better choice for tandems.

OUR MOST POPULAR TANDEMS
Since its introduction over a dozen years ago, the Sovereign has reigned
as the world’s most popular high-performance tandem. Equally suited for a
shared competition or an intimate weekend tour, the Sovereign is to cycling
as the Porsche 911 is to motoring. Sharing most of the same race-winning
tubing and components, the Encore and Picante allow an escape from the
world of pavement.
PERFECT-10 SHIFTING
Which road controls are best? Campagnolo’s
ErgoPower or Shimano’s STI? While the debate will
continue among single bike riders, for tandem owners
the choice is now clear.
In 2005 Shimano released an entirely new version of
their Ultegra STI integrated lever set. In testing, we quickly
noted a trio of standout features. First is the Lance-inspired
ergonomics with a new pair of riding positions on the
tops of the hoods. If you watched the Tour de France
coverage, it was easy to see how the Shimano-equipped
riders were using these new positions to great advantage. Second, Lance also convinced Shimano to ditch
the high-effort “Pro Action” feel that had been introduced
a couple of years earlier. The new lever’s lighter touch
allows one-finger shifts from the top of the grips or the bottom of the drops. Finally, while everyone noted the 10th
cog capability of the right lever, the big news for tandem
riders is the improved mechanism within the left lever.
This new lever not only has an additional trim position to
cure annoying chain drag, it bypasses trim stops during
downshifts. This, combined with an all-new Ultegra front
triple changer, allows fast and faultless downshifts even
while struggling up a steep grade.
The new Ultegra front derailleur is not only optimized
for narrower 10-speed chain, it has a deeper inner
cage shape that, when used with a 39-tooth middle
chainring, eliminates dropped chains—a tandem team’s
worst recurring nightmare. By allowing uphill downshifts
without the concurrent risk of dropping your chain, the
new Ultega levers and front changer will change the
way you ride your tandem.
But, tandem riders may counter, what good is Ultegra-30
when Shimano’s widest 10-speed cassette is only 12/27?
To cure this problem Santana commissioned the creation of
a new Mega-10 cassette with 11/34 ratios. And, since it’s
built exclusively for Santana, the ratios are tandem-specific.
Whereas Ultegra and Dura-Ace cassettes start at 12 teeth,
and rely on too many one-tooth “baby steps” before resorting to momentum-killing 3-tooth leaps beyond 21 teeth, our
Mega-10 provides an 11 tooth “overdrive” for a tandem’s
faster descents, maintains optimal 2-tooth steps all the way
through 25 teeth, and then provides a pair of still-larger
cogs for conquering the steepest climbs.
Taken together, Santana’s exclusive Perfect-10 shifting
provides greater control and comfort, fewer mis-shifts,
and uncompromised tandem-specific ratios. Standard
for many of our popular 2008 models, it’s available
on all models fitted with road handlebars.
What about Campagnolo? Instead of spending hundreds more to equip a new tandem with Campagnolo
shifting, why not take our “Campy for Free” challenge? Even if you’re a campy fanatic who has rejected older Shimano systems, we’re certain you’ll fall
in love with Perfect-10 shifting. If you try our system
for 30 days and disagree, we’ll let you remove and
return your undamaged Ultegra levers, changers and
11/34 cassette to Santana. At no charge we’ll exchange your used pieces for brand new Campagnolo
30-speed controls and changers, plus a compatible
12-27 cassette. (Full details at santanatandem.com).

EXOTIC ALLOYS
These models offer the unique blend of stiffness and
resilience that can be obtained only through the use of
exotic metals. Not merely lighter than the basic alloys
found on other tandems, these frames are also stiffer and
harder to dent. And while many experts would have you
believe that lower weight equals faster speeds, missing
from this equation is the undeniable effect of comfort. After
all, it’s not only how fast you are the first hour in the saddle,
it’s how long your body can maintain this speed. With
this trio of exclusive tubesets, the diameters and gauges
made possible by rare alloys dampen fatiguing vibration
to create a generous performance-enhancing sweet spot—
and phenomenal all-day comfort.
NIOBIUM
CroMoly, the typical steel alloy that’s been used for decades, is commonly
drawn to 9/6/9 gauges. The seamless CroMoly used by Santana can be
drawn to a higher-performance 8/5/8. Some tubing manufacturers harden
their tubes in order to achieve 7/4/7. Problem is, because hardened tubes
are brittle, a frame built from these tubes is more easily damaged and has a
shortened fatigue life. While hardened tubes aren’t a bad choice for a (more
disposable) single bike, a good tandem should endure for decades.
In concert with Europe’s leading car manufacturers, Columbus has developed
a lightweight alloy tube to protect passengers against side impact intrusion.
Columbus’ amazing Niobium is not only an achievement in automotive safety,
a double-butted version of this tube heralds a new era of bicycle design.
Because this new steel alloy gets its strength from rare elements instead of risky
heat treatment, dependable impact-resistant tubes can be butted to 6/3/6
gauges. If you want the planet’s lightest, strongest and fastest steel tandem,
insist on a Team Niobium from Santana.
SCANDIUM
When Jim Easton inked a deal with the world’s only source of refined scandium, the rare element found
only in Soviet missiles and fighter planes became available to the world of sports. When added to Easton’s
7000-series aluminum, scandium aligned and tightened the grain structure to create homer-hitting baseball bats,
goal-scoring hockey sticks and race-winning bicycle frames. Unfortunately, Easton naively used “Scandium”
to identify their revolutionary new alloy, thus paving the way for counterfeiters and con-artists. Because
international law won’t protect the name of an element, anything can be branded Scandium, even if it doesn’t
contain a single molecule of this expensive alloying element.
Santana, one of Easton’s first customers for Scandium tubing, produced a limited series of Stylus singles to
gain hands-on experience with this unique alloy. Following years of development and testing, in 2005 Santana
and Easton joined forces to produce an exclusive Scandium tubeset for tandems. In the meantime, builders and
customers who saved money by buying non-Easton “Scandium” have had good reason to feel cheated. If you
want the real thing instead of “fool’s gold,” insist on Scandium from Easton. If you want the planet’s lightest,
strongest and fastest aluminum tandem, insist on a Team Scandium from Santana.
TITANIUM
Since everyone knows about titanium, we’ll keep this short. The other guys mix two butted seat tubes with a
bunch of seamed 6/4 plain gauge pipe and a teensy pair of single bike chainstays to create a heavier tandem
that looks better than it rides. Santana is the only builder using seamless custom-drawn tandem-specific tubing.
(We take as much care with our tandems as they do with their singles.)

WHEN TWO SEATS AREN’T ENOUGH
Strong enough for all-adult teams, most of Santana’s family bikes are customdesigned for parents with growing children. With optional child stoker kits
installed in the center or rear riding positions, these models can be converted
back-and-forth between adult and child configurations in minutes. While any
builder can produce a frame with additional seats, your best buy will be an
adaptable bike that your family won’t outgrow. After building over 400 stretch
tandems Santana has more design and construction expertise than all other
builders combined.

BEYOND
The world’s most advanced tandem is skillfully built using IsoGrid® double-butted carbon tubing with co-molded titanium ends.
Equipped with a stunning list of high performance components, a machine like this begs the question: Is five figures too much to spend
for a bicycle? Of course not. Think of what your friends and neighbors have spent on motorized toys, including boats, snowmobiles,
motorcycles, jet skis—pleasant diversions that won’t add a day to their lifespan. Consider also the amount of money that cyclists
can justify for a cool new single-seat bike—a selfish purchase that your partner can’t share. This exotic
plaything not only exudes technology, the Santana Beyond signifies your commitment to a shared
pursuit of fitness and fun.
A BETTER WAY TO DO CARBON
Utilizing two breakthrough technologies licensed from VyaTek Sports, Santana’s
revolutionary Beyond welded carbon tandem frame weighs in at 5.5 pounds. The
Beyond is not only 15–40% lighter than previous tandem frames built from carbon,
titanium, or aluminum, it also establishes new standards for stiffness and comfort.
The first patented technology, IsoGrid®, is a cutting edge method of creating
a stronger and lighter carbon tube wherein a thin carbon skin is fused to a carbonkevlar skeleton while both are cured within an extreme pressure / high temperature
mold. The resulting tube—with a smooth exterior and a honeycomb interior—is not
unlike the internally reinforced construction of an airplane fuselage. As is the case
with airplanes, an IsoGrid® tube’s skin-over-rib configuration creates a sleek, failureresistant structure that is simultaneously stiffer and lighter.
While each tube is being molded, VyaTek Sports’ second patented technology,
Bi/Fusion™, fuses a thin titanium sleeve at each end of the IsoGrid® tube. The
resulting titanium tipped IsoGrid® tubes can be welded directly to each other.
Welded carbon construction not only prevents carbon’s most common form of failure,
22
it simultaneously avoids the weight penalty of glue and lugs (typically 20%). And it’s
the often overlooked efficiency of TIG welding that allows our carbon-and-titanium
Beyond frame to be a pound or more lighter than a pure carbon frame.
In order to optimize these technologies, Santana designed and produced
proprietary molds that allow efficient tandem tube shapes (i.e. oval bottom tube
and taper-diameter down tube) and optional integrally-fused titanium
S&S/oval frame couplers. Finally, because our extra long molds can produce tubes
with carbon sections of any length, Santana’s ability to customize fit and geometry
is practically unlimited.

THE STORY BEHIND ISOGRID™
In the early 90s, after the fall of the Berlin
Wall, American aerospace companies
scrambled for alternate markets. One of
those companies, Simula, decided to use
defense technology to build advanced
equipment for athletes. Their sports division
headed by Howard Lindsay courted the
leading innovators in the cycling industry,
including Cannondale, Answer, Trek, and
Santana. In 1993-94 Santana worked with
Simula to develop a one-piece carbon fiber
tandem frame. The insurmountable problem
was the cost of molds that would be limited to
one specific size and geometry. Eventually
Simula launched their own brand of single
bike, High Zoot, which although incredibly
advanced, was too expensive for mid ’90s
mountain bikers.
In 1997 Lindsay was recruited by True
Temper and worked for three years
as dual Vice President (heading both
Engineering and R&D). In 2000, when
Simula opted to sell their sporting goods
division, Howard left True Temper and
formed VyaTek to buy Simula’s patents
and technology. In 2002 after patenting a
way to manufacture carbon fiber bicycle
frames without troublesome glue or
immutable molds, he excitedly contacted
Santana.
Paying this much for a bike can be scary. Where are all the carbon frames that were built in the ‘80s and
‘90s? Better yet, where are their builders? How come today’s producers proudly promise a five year guarantee?
And will they be around to make good? And what if your carbon frame is damaged in an accident? Do you
throw it in a trash can? Finally, what’s the resale value? What would you pay for a used frame that might be
damaged and can’t be repaired?
The Beyond not only rides better, it’s a sound investment. Like every Santana built since 1976, the Beyond
comes with a lifetime guarantee. And if it becomes damaged in an unfortunate accident, a Beyond
with its welded construction can be repaired as good as new. Finally, smart buyers
will want to consider resale value. If your children don’t eventually pry
this tandem from your fingers, for over two decades
Santana’s resale values have remained
the highest in the entire
bicycle industry.
Wilson Sporting Goods licenses VyaTek’s
IsoGrid® technology to produce the
racquets used by Venus and Serena
Williams. Two days after agreeing to give
the new racquets a one week trial, the
world’s most recognized female athletes
switched to IsoGrid®. Their reason? See
if the following attributes sound familiar:
Lighter weight, higher velocity, greater
accuracy, and reduced muscle and joint
strain.
Other licensees include Scott (ski poles for
World Cup racers), Matrix Motorsports
(racing technology for German car
makers), and Titus Cycles (single bike
frames).

For thirty years Santana’s focus has been real instead of perceived performance. But
when it comes to selling all-terrain tandems, our insistence on “stuff that works” is a big
disadvantage. After all, for a lot less money you can find a rugged-looking mountain bike
tandem with some XT parts, disc brakes and a suspension fork. The average tandem in
this category, much like the dual suspension bikes sold at Wal-Mart, will see less than six
months of use before discouragement sets in. How much fun can it be to share a bike
with clumsy steering, awkward handling, brakes that produce more noise than stopping
power, a twisting fork that bounces and bottoms out, and wheels that wobble and fail. At
the center of it all, a frame that telegraphs every rut and bump to your tenderest parts
while flexing away from the force of each pedal stroke.
On previous pages, you’ll find the Picante and Cilantro—competent race-winning
veterans without the flashy adolescence. On this page, we present our Extreme,
a mountain tandem with attitude. But unlike others, this one has the underlying
strength to back up its bold looks with real performance. Complete with Easton
Scandium tubing, Hanebrink long-travel suspension fork, and dual hydraulic
Santana/Formula disc brakes.
CUSTOM BUILT-T0-ORDER FRAMES

Any model, any specification, any time — Santana delivers 15–20 built-to-order frames
every month. If you’re in the market for the ultimate custom tandem, there’s no need to
pay a fortune, suffer long delays or resign yourself to the limitations of a custom frame
builder. Because Santana builds more custom tandems than anyone, no other builder can
match our experience, tooling or uncompromised range of materials. And when you look
close, our careful hand detailing and attention to detail is second to none. Whether it’s
personalized sizing, use-specific geometry, extra braze-ons or a unique paint scheme, we
are ready to create the tandem of your dreams.
CUSTOM FINISH
Santana is famous for incomparably strong and
lustrous wet-on-wet paint backed by a DuPont
lifetime warranty. Choose from 8,000 available
colors, including ShadeShifter.™ We can also
produce fades, pearls, iridescents, holsteins
(moo), acids, linears and more. Aluminum /
Scandium models can receive Santana’s dazzling hand-swirled prizm finish sealed beneath a
clear or translucent top coat.
Because we keep dozens of unfinished frames
in stock, Santana can usually provide a stock
frame with custom paint within two weeks.
When a built-to-order frame isn’t needed, the
custom processing fee is waived. The remaining
custom paint and finish prices are listed on page
42. You or your dealer are invited to phone the
factory to obtain an estimated completion date.
CUSTOM SIZING
Though our standard sizes accommodate 90%
of all couples (including those with up to a 12"
difference in height), we’ve met the special
needs of hundreds of “impossible to fit” couples
since 1976. Because custom sized frames are
necessarily built-to-order, special fittings or a
unique finish are inexpensive additions.
CUSTOM CONFIGURATION
When Disney needed a custom quad in time for the opening of their newest Main Street,
they relied on Santana. Special thanks to Hong Kong Disneyland for sharing this photo.
PROMPT DELIVERY GUARANTEED!
WE MAKE IT EASY
While other builders may expect you to wait until the
middle of next season, Santana has hundreds of frames
in stock today, and delivers most built-to-order tandems
within four to five weeks. Our computer assisted frame
design and workflow management allows remarkably
quick completion without cutting corners. And in the custom-frame “business,” where delays of a month or two
are the rule instead of the exception, Santana’s guaranteed prompt delivery reduces your custom frame’s processing fee by $100 for each full week of delay.
The best way to get the ball rolling is to phone us here
at the factory. We are experts who will patiently help
you to evaluate various choices, determine your needs,
and collect accurate measurements. Next we’ll prepare
a written proposal for your approval. If you like what
you see, we will continue to coordinate with you and
your dealer to make sure your built-to-order frame is expertly designed, carefully handcrafted and beautifully
finished—all within our contracted schedule.
THE DETAILS
As soon as we understand your needs, we’ll put it in writing and FAX or Express Mail a proposal describing your
custom design and the number of weeks we’ll need to
complete it. If everything is correct, you or your dealer can
sign and return the form along with the requested deposit.
The clock starts when we receive these items. Please note
that non-standard configurations add 2 weeks, and that an
additional week will be added if your order coincides with
one of Santana’s scheduled vacation weeks (first week
of July and final week of December). For each full week
we are late in completing your frame, the frame’s basic
processing fee will be reduced by $100. If your frame’s
completion is late by five weeks you may, in lieu of the
price reduction, cancel your order and receive a full refund
of the deposit.

NEW HORIZONS
Our 2007 tour of the Colorado Rockies included five families riding quads.
B
itten by the tandem bug when
a pair of riding buddies
borrowed a tandem and left
him in the dust, at age 15 Bill
McCready bought an old racing
tandem. After years of teaming with
other guys to race and set course
records, he found touring with young
women was more pleasant. Eventually
marrying his favorite tandem partner,
Jan and Bill’s cycling vacations had spanned a dozen
countries before they started Santana.
Readers may be amazed to learn that Santana’s tours
and rallies are planned and co-hosted our company’s
owners. It’s true. After hundreds of couples who learned
about Bill and Jan’s continuing adventures asked to join
them, the McCreadys opened their vacations to all
tandem riders. Determined not to let a “personal hobby”
get in the way of their “real work” here at Santana
(where our mission remains the world’s finest tandems)
Bill and Jan limit themselves to hosting no more than
six tandem events per year. At these gatherings—where
all brands of tandems are welcome—you’ll find
the McCreadys riding every day. And if you want to
trade tandems to try out their Beyond, just ask!
Vacationing with hundreds of tandem teams each year,
and riding a dozen or more of their bikes in the process,
is just one of the many ways Santana remains at the
forefront of tandeming.
As you’ll see in the following pages, our events are a
step beyond the tours available to single bike riders.
Instead of copying other itineraries (or subcontracting
events to outside tour companies), Bill and Jan instead
leverage the universal fascination of tandems to personally create entirely new events. Sitting down with hotel
managers, property owners, chefs, entertainers, guides
and tourism officials, they open a recent issue of
Tandems & Tandeming to discuss a new type of
special event filled with enthusiastic and energetic couples.
Bill and Jan then challenge these experts to kick aside the
proverbial red carpet in order to create an experience
that supersedes what they’ve
26
done for others.
VIP Travel Updates
Always looking for new challenges, the McCreadys
design 2 or 3 new itineraries per year. To fill out our
annual schedule, they recycle a few of the very best
events from previous years. The problem with this format
is that 1,500 couples who’ve traveled with Santana in the
past are eagerly watching for exciting new itineraries.
An even larger number who have heard great reports
from past participants are waiting and hoping for a
particular event to be repeated. As a result, some events
now sell-out before the mailman brings everyone their
next copy of Tandems & Tandeming.
If you’d like to get equal advance notice of upcoming
events, Bill now maintains a separate e-mail list for
those who’d like timely updates. Unlike those annoying
e-mail lists you’ve subscribed to in the past, this one will
yield just 3–4 short messages annually. We hope an
occasional note from go@santanatandem.com will tempt
you to relax for a minute while daydreaming about your
next tandeming vacation. To get on the list, fill out a new
Tandems & Tandeming subscription form on the web at
www.santanatandem.com, and check the box to
receive VIP travel updates.
WHAT’S A
“BIKE CRUISE”?
For a romantic getaway that’s twice as good, Santana
recently pioneered an entirely new type of vacation.
Although cruise ships and bike tours have co-existed
for over a century, our unique contribution was to
merge them with a cyclists’-only charter. If you’d like
to combine the energy of bicycle tour with the luxury of a
9-day cruise, Santana’s newest innovation—a chartered
BIKE CRUISE—is like getting two vacations for the price
of one. If you don’t mind making your friends and coworkers a bit jealous, on page 38 we provide a list of
compelling reasons to become vacationing trendsetters.
YOUR Invitation
If you’re ready for a better vacation, the following pages
describe signature adventures that encompass more than
miles of great scenery. Using the mystique of tandeming
to connect with locals, we’ll sample a region’s lifestyle
by pausing to enjoy their stories, music, arts, history,
architecture and cuisine. Check them out, and you’ll see
that Santana’s events are not your normal bike tour.
dead-end roads, a bakery stop in Roche

driftwood-strewn beach. Lunch is amidst
flowing fields of lavender—where we’ll

perfumes are created.
SAN JUAN ISLANDS
TANDEM RALLY
AUGUST 11–15, 2008
In 2008 Santana visits America’s #1 cycling destination.
From our deluxe hotel in the picture-perfect village of Friday
Harbor—the crown jewel of the Puget Sound—we’ll use ferries
for an island-hopping tandeming adventure with no repacking.
Thursday’s ferry threads its way through
smaller islands to find a cyclists’ favorite.
Lopez Island has few hills, less traffic, Shark
Reef Nature Reserve and a creamery with
fresh ice cream. Thursday afternoon you can
enjoy a layover at teensy Shaw Island or
get back to Friday Harbor in time for a fast
afternoon ride through the battleground that
determined Canada’s southern boundary.
After 4 days of rides and activities, plus 4 restful nights in Friday Harbor, August
12th is our catch-up day. Will you sleep in or get in a last ride before our late
breakfast? After checkout and breakfast, will you do some shopping, sit down on a
dock to write postcards, or enjoy a guided kayak tour?
Until now the toughest part of tandeming the San Juan Islands has been getting there.
Unless you lived in the Northwest or wanted to spend days driving there, the classic
solution involved flying to Seattle, renting a van, driving 125 miles to Anacortes,
and then waiting for hours in the long lines for the ferry. Santana has an inspired
solution: With our inexpensive VIP option we’ll meet you at Seattle’s airport, help
you with your bikes and gear, and put you on fast yacht for a three hour cruise to
Friday Harbor. After the rally, we’ll reverse the process to speed you back to Seattle
or its airport.
Monday August 11: Those who opt for our VIP package will meet in Seattle this
morning for a cruise to the islands. The rally’s official afternoon start is in Friday
Harbor, where an 18-mile warm-up ride introduces us to the easy pace of the
islands. Remember Free Willy? Filmed locally, our ride ends at the Whale Museum,
where a naturalist tells us about the three pods of Orcas that live here. Next, a
multimedia show introduces us to the other forms of wildlife (mammal, fish and fowl)
we’ll spot during rides, hikes and ferry crossings. For tonight’s meal we’ve rented the
yacht club, where our sunset dinner will be served with views of the marina and the
San Juans’ busiest ferry terminal.
Been to Norway? After Tuesday’s
breakfast at the harbor, we’ll catch a ferry
to rugged Orcas Island—with its fjordlike East Sound, towering mountains and
cascading waterfalls. Our destination is
Rosario Resort, and a fabulous gourmet
lunch with fresh salmon and berries. Since
the basic ride (18 miles each way) might
not be long enough to sufficiently build
your appetite, pre lunch options include
a waterfalls hike or a ride to the 2,407’
summit of Mt. Constitution for views across
350 islands.
SAN JUAN
ISLANDS
Wednesday, the only day we won’t use
a boat or ferry, includes a circuit of San
Juan Island. Fun stuff today includes a
remote hike-a-bike connecting beautiful
A guaranteed sell-out, our 5-day rally in the unforgettable San Juans—with four
nights of deluxe three-star lodging, 8 limitless meals, ferry trips linking four islands
and more—is a rare bargain at $1029 per adult. Whereas the most popular
single-bike tours of the San Juans (check out the web-offerings at Trek Travel and
Backroads) are one day longer, they’re also more than twice as expensive. That’s
right, with Santana an adult tandem team can ride these islands for what they charge
for just one child! Because our child price is $599, a family of four can save enough
to purchase airline tickets. Because a small deposit saves your space (and our VIP
option is limited by the size of the boat), why not reserve today?
What is “Family Friendly”?
Tandeming’s most anticipated midsummer event is Santana’s annual
family-friendly rally; where about a third of the couples will arrive
with their children. Instead of pricey inns and overblown banquets,
these events combine scenic destinations with an expanded array
of rides and a ton of extra activities—all with a youthful appeal. With
or without children, our San Juan Islands Rally in 2008, Great Lakes Rally in
2009 (page 36) or Heart of Europe Tour in 2009 (page 40) promise to be the most fun
you’ll have all summer.

training camps. And in the fall, when the weather
is absolutely perfect, 50,000 connoisseurs of the
cycling lifestyle celebrate their hard-earned fitness
with a glorious pre-winter vacation.
How come you’ve not heard about Mallorca?
Because the island is already blessed with savvy
travelers and Spain’s highest per-capita income,
the Spanish Tourist Bureau works overtime to send
Americans elsewhere. Seemingly reserved for
Europeans, less than 1% of Mallorca’s tourists arrive
from North American.
Who else offers Mallorcan cycling
tours? While Mallorca provides
superior cycling, tour companies
that cater to Americans can’t
afford to promote tours to unknown
destinations. In order to balance
their books, these companies
are obliged to operate in overexposed areas where Americans,
even cyclists, have worn-out their
Spain's mallorca
OCTOBER 10–18, 2008
Rarely visited by Americans, European cyclists have made Mallorca their
favorite destination. Growing more popular each year, this region now hosts
more serious cyclists than Tuscany, the Loire Valley and Ireland combined.
A semi-autonomous region of Spain, Mallorca is a safe, sunny and friendly
island where hospitality towards foreign visitors is a centuries-old tradition. Whether
or not you've already cycled in Italy, France or Ireland, tandem riders can be among
the first Americans to learn why Europeans would rather ride in Mallorca.
Halfway between Monte Carlo and Morocco (and a nine-hour boat ride from
Barcelona), Mallorca is a gorgeous natural paradise with rugged coasts, unspoiled
beaches, and bountiful orchards. It's easy to understand why a dozen ancient
civilizations from Europe, Africa and Asia Minor took turns conquering the
Mediterranean’s most beautiful island. As a result, today’s Mallorca is a veritable
showcase where the antiquities, architecture, art and cuisine reveal ancient links with
Africa and the Orient.
Why do cyclists love Mallorca? Breathtaking scenery, great roads, fabulous food,
courteous drivers and twice as many sunny days as the French Riviera. Because
it combines warm weather, untrafficked routes and a full range of terrain, ALL of
Europe’s Pro Teams now start their season here. Each spring, after the

tour ideas from companies who
copy each other’s itineraries
and re-run the same tired
trips, Santana networks with
European tandem enthusiasts
to discover friendlier regions
with more-spectacular cycling.
Why not start in Madrid ?
Since tandeming on the day you land isn’t the safest choice, Santana’s past clients expect
Jan and Bill McCready to provide a fabulous excuse to arrive in Europe a couple
of days early. While our tandem tour will start and end in Mallorca—and you are
welcome to meet us there—since almost all transatlantic flights to Mallorca connect
through Spain’s capital city, our optional 48-hour pre-tour will ease you through jet
lag with a vigorous exploration of Madrid and Toledo. Using energetic professional
guides, we’ll cover more ground in two days than the average tourist manages
in four. While we’re being introduced to Spain, our tandems will be shuttled
ahead to Mallorca—and can even be built by the time you arrive.

2008
On Saturday October 11, a mid-morning arrival at Mallorca’s
convenient main airport (PMI) allows us to check in and enjoy
leisurely lunch before an introductory ride through a pine forest to
tour a Spanish Castle. Our home for three nights is the island's finest
grand-luxe hotel. Perched on a ridge above the capital city of Palma,
the front rooms have a view of the city lights and seaside cathedral,
and the back rooms look down upon the King of Spain's coastal
castle. Speaking of royalty, no fewer than six reigning monarchs have
stayed at this palatial hotel. Do you think the chefs can prepare a
suitable welcoming banquet?
Sunday we stretch our
legs for a lightly rolling
39-mile loop through
vineyards to Andratx
and it’s nearby port—
where we’ve found
the perfect seafood
cantina for a gourmet
lunch overlooking the
narrow fishing harbor.
Our coastline return
detours through Portals
Nous, the exclusive
harbor hosting the

largest collection of multimillion dollar yachts. Tonight, a guided stroll starts at Palma’s
cathedral, passes trendy boutiques, and follows narrow passageways beneath
Moorish arches to reach our sangria-and-tapas reception in a hidden courtyard.
On Monday, while the short riders take the antique narrow-gauge train to Soller, the
rest of us climb Coll de Soller. Now bypassed by a tunnel, the season's first summit
for every European Pro is the old road to Soller—a 1600-foot pass with five dozen
switchbacks on each flank. The best part of the ride is the international camaraderie
of hundreds of cyclists who conquer this pass daily. From Soller our routes follow
a rugged coastal that climbs slowly through the terraced village of Deia to reach
Valldemossa (the artists’ colony where Michael Douglas has a house) and Esporles.
We'll break the climb with a scenic lunch and, in any case, spectacular views will
offset the mild gradient. Before realizing it, you'll be coasting to the hotel. On this
toughest day of our tour your choice is two climbs and 53 miles;
or the scenic train ride, one climb and 35 miles. Too short? Each
day's cue-sheet lists longer options.
Days 4-5: After three nights in our ridge-top palace, Tuesday's
mostly-flat 45-mile ride passes through acres of citrus, almonds
and olives before stopping to visit a leather-goods workshop
(and factory outlet!). Our destination is a coastal town where
bronze-age excavations surround a newer amphitheater built by
the Romans, which predates by a thousand years a two-century
occupation by the Arabs, who gave Alcudia it’s current name
before the Spanish landed to create the medieval fortress and
much-more-recent bullring. On the wide bay, our "boatel" is
at the tip-end of the Alcudia’s marina. Because we're here two
nights, on Wednesday it will be possible to skip cycling and take
a fast catamaran across Polensa Bay to Cape Formentor—where
Winston Churchill came to paint landscapes. The featured 40mile ride circles the bay and joins scores of vacationing cyclists
who will sweep past Formentor for a challenging ride to the
lighthouse at the end of the aptly-named Devil’s Tail. Because
the catamaran is large enough for tandems, on our “layover” day you can cruise one
or both ways to trim 10 or 20 miles from your lighthouse-ride distance.
Days 6-8: Thursday's eastward ride traces small roads across a windmill-strewn plain
(Mallorca has more windmills than Holland) to reach the world-famous workshops
of Majorica—where an informative tour will cause stokers to lust for a luminous
piece of perfected-pearl jewelry. After 51 miles and a few gentle hills we'll arrive
to enjoy two nights at the scenic Coast of Pines Resort. On Friday’s final day of
rides, our 35-65 mile options include Europe’s finest cavern, a cyclists’ pilgrimage
to a mountaintop church, or the stone village where Father Junipero Serra was born
(Santana's California rallies have toured 4 of his missions). Back at our coastal
resort, we’ll pack our tandems and enjoy a farewell dinner. Saturday’s early shuttle
back to Palma’s airport will allow you to reach home this same day. If you want to
see more of Spain, Barcelona is a tempting place for layover.
Are you ready?
If you dare to break free of a well-worn rut, why not skip the places your friends have
visited to be among the first Americans to discover a “secret” island and Europe’s
most coveted cycling? Santana’s unique 8-day offering includes 7 memorable rides
(with a daily choice of mileage), 7 restful nights in a trio of resort hotels, hot daily
breakfasts, most lunches and dinners (Santana’s consulting chef, Robert Baur, will
personally oversee our menus to make sure we enjoy a superb selection of Spanish
and European cuisine), guided tours and admissions, airport transfers, and much,
much more. Scheduled in October, when peak fitness aligns with perfect Mallorca
weather and off-season airfares, our remarkably low price is just $3195 per person.
If you haven’t yet visited Madrid or Toledo, our optional 48-hour pre-tour (price TBD)
eases you through jetlag and includes your flight to the island.

WINTER SUN
TANDEM RALLY
PRESIDENTS’ VACATION WEEK
FebRUARY 15-18, 2009
L
ose the winter blues with four days of spectacular cycling in everyone’s favorite winter
destination—Arizona. Here we’ll rediscover the legends of the old west in a carefully-crafted
tandeming adventure that features uncrowded highways, endless vistas, and the lush Sonoran
Desert during its showcase season. The crystal clear air, sunny warm days, brilliant sunsets and
gorgeous starry nights are certain to rejuvenate your body, mind, and spirit for the many challenges
of the upcoming year.
Santana’s Presidents’ Week Tandem Rally starts in Sierra Vista (an hour south of Tucson). Never
heard of Sierra Vista? Bicycling Magazine rated it one of the “Ten Best” cities for cycling. If you think
Arizona’s deserts are brown and bleak, the landscape surrounding Sierra Vista will change your
mind. This green valley, home of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, has a yearround river, abundant plant life, and, with 400 species of birds (especially hummingbirds) recorded,
is one of the nation’s premier birding areas.
Although this rally (actually a four-day tandem tour) is affordably priced, it includes great rides,
spectacular lodging, gourmet meals, exciting off-bike explorations, knowledgeable guides, valet
luggage service and live entertainment. A sunny place to kick-start your season, our basic routes
between hotels max out at an easy 42 miles.
30
By special permission Sunday’s 23-mile warm-up ride departs mid-morning and
uses the secure traffic-free roads of America’s oldest still-active military outpost.
From Fort Huachuca’s original wooden stockade, mounted troopers (including the
original Afro-American “Buffalo Soldiers”) tracked notorious Apache warriors Cochise
and Geronimo. Later, General “Blackjack” Pershing departed this same fort to chase
an infamous raider named Pancho Villa. Between world wars a brash young cavalry
officer named George Patton used Huachuca’s expanse to practice tank maneuvers
he’d later use to out-fox Rommel and his vaunted Afrika Korps. Now the US Army’s
training center for electronic warfare, today’s Huachuca graduates are tracking
Al Quaida. Following a tour the fort’s compelling museum, our rally’s first meal is
an authentic cavalry cookout.
For this afternoon we’ve obtained the carefully-rationed tickets that allow you to tour
Kartchner Caverns. Discovered twenty years ago by a pair of amateur spelunkers
who realized they were first humans to enter a cavern grander than Carlsbad, this
duo conspired in secrecy to convince a rancher (named Kartchner) and the Governor
of Arizona to create a state-of-the-art facility where ranger-guided tours would allow
non-cavers to experience the world’s finest unspoiled caverns. To preserve the
fragile ecosystem, only a few dozen people per day are allowed through airlocks that
maintain the cavern’s humidity and temperature.
Tonight, back at our resort lodgings, another memorable meal precedes a private
concert by Arizona’s most popular enter-tainer. Dolan Ellis, a founding member
of the Grammy-winning New Christy Minstrels, retired from folkmusic stardom and mustered his various talents (lyrics, voice,
guitar and camera) to chronicle Arizona’s folklore and natural
beauty. Named “Official State Balladeer” by the last nine
Governors, Dolan’s unique presentation of stories and original
songs is framed by a syncopated slideshow of his acclaimed
Arizona photography.
On Wednesday you’ll have time to sleep in. At the upper edge of Bisbee a choice of
routes includes our tour’s only granny-gear climb. To test your low gear, turn onto
the old road for a twisty three-mile ascent of Historic Mule Pass. Or, if February
has too few days for a granny-gear climb, the shorter and easier route uses the
smooth bike lane to coast through Mule Pass Tunnel. From where the roads rejoin,
it’s a fast, mostly downhill 25-mile return to Sierra Vista. Before changing into your
traveling clothes, you’ll want to enjoy a refreshing swim at
our rally’s poolside farewell BBQ.
Because Santana’s adventure starts on the Sunday preceding
a holiday week, it’s easy to convert a four-day absence from
work into nine-day winter vacation. Simply fly into Phoenix
or Tucson, rent a car for a week, attend this tour, and then
linger in sunny Arizona before flying homeward. If you don’t
want to take your bike on the plane, Santana’s U.S. rallies
feature prearranged low-cost round-trip shipping. And if you
want to invite tandem-deficient friends, we can bring a fresh
Santana from the factory. Once they’ve discovered the fun
of tandeming, their basic rental fee can be applied to the
subsequent purchase of a new Santana.
On Monday our easy out ’n’ back ride follows the old telegraph
line 21 miles across the San Pedro Valley to reach Tombstone.
In an Old West filled with cheesy theme parks and lifeless historic
monuments, Tombstone is the real deal. In “the town too tough
to die,” we’ll hitch-up our tandems next the wooden sidewalks
where some still hear the faint echoed bootsteps of Wyatt Earp,
Doc Holliday, Bat Masterson, Johnny Ringo and the Clanton
Gang. While in town we’ll see the gilded Bird Cage Theater, the

deep into the mountain, where retired miners will provide an informative tour
of their carefully-preserved workplace. Because Bisbee has an eclectic collection of
small bistros and pubs, the remainder of our tour’s last evening was purposefully

left free so that you could share a table with some new tandeming friends.
Needed: A Better
New Zealand
Cycling Tour
S
antana’s planners spent an entire
decade preparing for this tour. In
addition to poring through guidebooks
and studying itineraries, we talked to a score
of “Kiwis” (New Zealand residents) who own
our tandems, and to over 200 cyclists who’ve
vacationed there. We learned that in this
beautiful yet sparsely populated country the
distance between hotels often exceeds 80 miles.
Because of extreme distances, organized
New Zealand cycling tours invariably use 12-15
passenger vans to shuttle most riders on most
days. Since the vans make numerous stops
and retrieve additional riders, many participants are crammed in the back of vans for
hours at a time. Additionally, while cyclists
rave about New Zealand’s scenery and
sparse traffic, interesting stops are few and
far between. On most days the only activity
between hotels (besides the van ride) is a
numbing number of miles and a cold roadside
picnic. Finally, after subtracting time for daily
repacking, waiting for the shuttle, and then
riding within it, the normal equation doesn’t
allow enough time for off-bike exploration or
cultural interpretation.
On one hand, stuffing cyclists into small vans
makes New Zealand’s tours possible. The total reliance on vans, however, prevents participants from experiencing New Zealand’s full
diversity. Nearly all tours, for instance, skip
the North Island entirely. Even then, the vans
can’t cover enough ground to include many of
the South Island’s best places. To provide an
altogether better experience, Santana created a unique tour of New Zealand. But unless
your friends are ready to discover the joys of
tandeming, you’ll have to leave them behind.
Announced to our VIP’s (see page 26) at the
beginning of 2008, only a few spaces remain
for this 2009 event. Surprisingly, even fewer
spaces are still available for the only planned
repeat (dates TBD). If you’re ready for a
once-in-a-lifetime New Zealand tandeming
adventure, phone Santana without delay.
32
the crest of Christchurch’s volcano we’ll ride along
the ridge to enjoy alternating views of the city on one
side and the ocean in the distance. While timid riders
can turn back at the rim, the rest of us will get in 50
miles by coasting down into the volcano, catching a
ferry to the opposite shore, and crossing a lower lip
on the crater to reenter town.
FEB 27–MAR 8, 2009
O
ur long-awaited tandem tour of New Zealand
premieres in 2009. On February 27 we’ll
meet in Christchurch, a quaint English-styled
city with New Zealand’s second largest airport. After
meeting your flight our hotel in the garden city is a
block from magnificent Cathedral Square and the
tranquil Avon River. This afternoon there’ll be time
(and mechanical help) to build your tandem for a
short orientation ride. Later, while visiting New
Zealand’s most surprising venue, we’ll have dinner at
the South Pole. Christchurch is, after all, the official
“jumping off” point, where researchers wait for a
rare break in the weather that allows the 12-hour
flight to the Antarctic. Instead of letting their valuable
time go to waste, the world’s foremost polar experts
have helped to create a unique training center that
showcases their challenging mission. Tonight we’ll get
a special tour of their center, peek into a waiting
Hercules cargo plane (112 seats, no windows), ride
across realistic crevasses in a 30-passenger snowcat,
and zip into special suits to experience a simulated
blizzard. In warmer rooms we’ll visit penguins and
enjoy our tour’s gala welcoming dinner.
Although it’s 10 times larger, New Zealand shares
Hawaii’s volcanic heritage. Situated at the edge of
a vast plain, Christchurch is totally flat except for the
monstrous volcano on the seaward side of town. Our
second day’s ride will warm up on the flats and then
join the parade of local cyclists that use a road to the
top of the volcano as their daily training course. At
New Zealand is dominated by the “Southern Alps,” a
range of jagged glacier-capped peaks that separate
the island’s Pacific and Tasman coasts. Because NZ’s
West Coast is particularly spectacular, on the morning
of day three we’ll board the legendary Tranz-Alp
Express. Rated among the world’s finest scenic train
rides, we’ll leave Christchurch early to reach the
opposite coast in only four hours. Strong teams can
debark at New Zealand’s highest rail station for a
mostly-downhill century that ends at our oceanfront
hotel. The rest of us will enjoy the entire train followed
by a 30-mile ride along the finest segment of the
Tasman Coast. Uniquely situated at the center of this
perfect but rarely-offered route is New Zealand’s
finest oceanfront hotel: the Resort at Punakaiki with its
unique outcropping of pancake-shaped rocks.
Thirty miles north of Punakaiki short riders will end
day four’s ride at Westport. Long riders turn up the
Buller River Gorge for 30 more miles. From there we’ll
transfer back across the South Island’s central alps. Hate
bus rides? We agree. But 3.5 hours on a restroom
equipped bus with reclining seats and big view
windows is preferable to two hours in a cramped 15seat van. Whereas other NZ cycling tours feature
multi-hour van shuttles nearly every day, this is the
only extended bus shuttle on Santana’s entire tour!
After two days in Christchurch and two days on the
Tasman Coast, we’ll reach the Marlborough Sounds;
a region combining the finest elements of Norway’s
Fjords, California’s Napa Valley and Washington’s
San Juan Islands. At the head of the Queen Charlotte
Sound we’ll check in for a three-night stay at a
luxurious hotel overlooking Picton’s lively harbor.
New Zealand’s Other Half
Although it offers better weather, exquisite scenery and unique
charms, most cycling tours avoid New Zealand’s tropical North
Island due to its heavier traffic. Because it would be a shame to
bring your tandem half-way around the world and miss some
of New Zealand’s finest cycling, we’ll charter a 737 jetliner
plus a pair of jet-powered catamarans to experience four days
of rare and untrafficked North Island rides.
In New Zealand as in Europe, the bike tours marketed to
American cyclists blindly follow well-beaten paths to the tired,
crowded and over-exposed places that resident cyclists have
learned to avoid. To find superior destinations with less traffic,
instead of turning to guidebooks or copying the resulting
itineraries, Santana talked with dozens of New Zealand
enthusiasts to learn their favorite rides and cycling vacations.
Nearly all agreed that New Zealand’s most spectacular cycling
is in the Marlborough Sounds.
Held each year and limited to 2500 riders, NZ’s #1 cycling
event is The Grape Ride, a particularly easy “loop through
nature’s photo album” that includes the Queen Charlotte
Coastline and the finest vineyards south of the Equator. Our
short and long versions cover 35 and 65 miles during NZs
wine harvest; and stop to enjoy a vintner’s spread at a famous
Marlborough estate.
After five days with rides, most will be ready for a day without
cycling. So while our blanketed bikes are shipped ahead to the
North Island we’ll use Picton’s Mail Boat to voyage a sound
where whale and dolphin frolic to reach a remote National
Reserve with unforgettable hiking and kayaking.
In a volcanic nation, Rotorua is New Zealand’s equivalent of
Yellowstone. Our day 7 ride from the airport passes geysers,
bubbling mudpots, steaming vents, napping volcanoes and
a pair of adjacent lakes with mineral dyed green and blue
waters. Our lunch stop is “Buried Village,” where in 1886
an unexpected midnight eruption buried a Victorian resort
and its two hotels. Many guests perished before dawn, but
not before penning recently excavated farewell letters. At New
Zealand’s version of Pompei, the intriguing museum includes
a multi-media presentation, heat-distorted artifacts, and some
“day-before” photographs showing doomed tourists, residents
and buildings. As Rotorua is also the capital of the still-vibrant
Maori civilization, following our 35–50 mile rides tonight’s
dinner in an authentic Maori lodge includes New Zealand’s
undiluted version of a luau.
Another favorite ride for Kiwis is Pyes Pa Trace—the historic
road linking Rotorua with New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty. On
day 8 our predominantly downhill 48-mile route traverses a
pair a deep gullies on the way to a still-abundant shore that
retains the name given to it by Captain Cooke. Three decades
ago farmers here became overnight millionaires when the
world discovered an insatiable appetite for Kiwi-fruit. Because
the road along Bay of Plenty’s shore is narrow and trafficky,
this afternoon we’ll board a fast catamaran to enjoy a late
lunch while paralleling a busy section of coastal highway.
When Kiwis need a week of super-natural seclusion, their
favorite getaway is the Coromandel Peninsula, where we’ll
frame our visit within a pair of boat rides. The first voyage
ends at the resort village of Pauanui; where we’ll spend two
nights in luxurious lodgings. If you need another sans-bike
day, our layover day allows beachcombing, golf, scuba or
spa treatments. Jan and Bill will lead a ride 15 miles into a
remote valley. Four miles beyond the end of the pavement we’ll
meet up with Doug Johansen. While Australia’s Crocodile
Dundee was mostly Hollywood hype, and it’s too late to enjoy
a croc hunt with the legendary Steve Irwin, New Zealand’s #1
naturalist/adventurer is none other than Doug. Today we’ll join
“Kiwi Dundee” for an entertaining wilderness adventure trek
that includes wildlife, scenery and history.
After scouting dozens of NZ rides, we think day 10, tracing
the exotic Coromandel’s shore for 55 remarkable miles, will
be your favorite. Don’t worry, a special shortcut trims 20
miles while avoiding the toughest hill. At the end of our ride
we’ll clean up and pack our tandems before boarding New
Zealand’s largest cruising catamaran for a chartered sunset
party cruise that ends in Auckland. Unless you’d like to spend
an extra night and day in this city; a late non-stop across the
International Date Line somehow arrives in America before
leaving New Zealand. In other words, you can be back home
(and reasonably rested) on Sunday, March 8, 2009.

Added Feature
What’s Included?
Although $4595 per person is not inexpensive,
as opposed to a similarly priced cycling tour from
Backroads or Butterfield & Robinson, our exclusive
tandems-only adventure includes superior routes and
rides, more guides and admissions, a wider range of
sights and scenery, PLUS an extra island. Instead of a
daily ride in the back of a cramped van, we’ll employ
an Alpine Express Train, an Air New Zealand 737,
jet-powered cruise boats and first class coaches—
allowing us to reach twice as many great places with
half as many multi-hour shuttles.
Additionally, in a country know for sub-par cuisine,
Robert Baur’s expert participation as Santana’s
exuberant Consulting Chef guarantees that our fresher
and better gourmet meals are paired with outstanding
New Zealand wines.
Because Santana wants your active vacation to be
energetic and challenging without becoming stressful
or draining, Jan and Bill will be on hand to help each
couple select the best routes and options. Their goal
is to make sure the pace and scope of this once-in-alifetime New Zealand vacation exceeds your dreams
and expectations—but not your endurance.
As always, the very best part of every Santana event
is the camaraderie of adventurous and capable
couples—interesting people who are actually FUN to
travel with.
34
Based on popular demand from those who signed
up soonest, we’ve decided to offer an optional
Pre-Tour with four additional days of tandeming.
Those who fly into Queenstown by February
25th will be shuttled to one of New Zealand’s
finest ski resorts. After a warmup ride on Lake
Wanaka’s shoreline, our ride on the 26th uses
New Zealand’s highest paved road over the
Crown Range on a mostly downhill 50 mile ride
that crosses the famous bungie gorge enroute
to a two-night stay in Queenstown—“adventure
capitol of the world.” After cleaning up at our
lakeside resort we’ll walk to the aerial gondola
for a top-of-the-peak dinner and an hour of nonstop fun on a summer luge course. Day 3 we ride
35 miles along the shore to Glenorchy. While our
bikes are trucked back, we’ll use jet boats and
4-wheel drive buses to explore the Dart River
Preserve (where key scenes from Lord of the Rings
were filmed). Back at the lake, we’ll visit a sheepstation to try our hand at shearing before using
the coal-fired antique lake-steamer Earnslaw to
return to our hotel. On day four our 25-mile prelunch loop visits the preserved gold-mining village
of Arrowtown. A late checkout allows us to clean
up before catching an early afternoon flight to
Christchurch, where we’ll arrive in time to join the
main group at the Arctic Center.
CHESAPEAKE BAY TANDEM RALLY
NEW DATES
MAY 7-10, 2009
Santana’s May 2009 tandem rally on the Chesapeake Bay will celebrate the
arrival of short-sleeve weather with four days of invigorating rides along tidal
inlets, meandering creeks and forested shores. For our long-awaited return to the
Chesapeake (where Santana hosted sold out events in 1998 and 2002), we’ve
upgraded to the New Hyatt Regency on the bay’s unspoiled Eastern Shore. After four
glorious days of tandeming and three luxurious nights, we’ll conclude our event with
a festive Mother’s Day Brunch.
While Santana rallies have become
synonymous
with
resort-class
accommodations, the Hyatt Regency
Chesapeake Bay is clearly a cut above.
Located in tiny Cambridge, Maryland
(population 11,000) on the tranquil
Delmarva Peninsula, most vacationers
seek out the Hyatt’s new flagship resort to
enjoy their spa, beach, marina, tennis or
golf. We’ve got an even better excuse—4
days of spring cycling on a network of
lightly traveled back roads in an alluring
realm that’s flatter (and far more scenic)
than Holland.
On Thursday’s intro ride 80 tandem teams
will stretch their legs while riding 18-26
miles inland along the wide, slow-moving Choptank River. Prime seafood territory,
we can watch the Chesapeake’s hard-working “watermen” in small boats as they
harvest a bounty of clams, crabs, fish and oysters. Towards sunset we’ll board a
chartered boat and cruise back to the Hyatt while enjoying a hearty Chesapeake
waterman’s supper.
After Friday’s hot breakfast buffet at the Hyatt, we’ll tandem to colonial village of
Oxford in time for morning tea. From there, short riders take a ferry while the rest of
us log additional sights and miles. In the picture perfect town of St. Michaels we’ll
regroup at Chesapeake Maritime Museum for a fascinating tour and a signature
crab cake lunch on their pier. Before you head back, Friday is a great day to explore
St. Michaels’ boutiques and galleries. If you agonized about today’s choice of a
ferry ride vs. extra miles, all Friday routes (from 38 to 70+ miles) use a ferry on the
return to the Hyatt.
Saturday’s ride is one you are certain to remember. Instead of mixing with weekend
tourists in the small towns, we’ll instead use tiny lanes across drawbridges to
reach remote islands and the Blackwater National Wildlife Preserve. A pristine
wetlands with sparse traffic and over a hundred miles of smooth pavement, on
this ride you’re certain to spot majestic
raptors— including giant osprey (with
a 6-foot wingspan) and the slightly
larger bald eagle—as they soar above
shallow ponds searching for fish to feed
their voracious spring nestlings. Back at the Hyatt after 40 or more very flat miles,
our event’s second open evening gives you a chance to try another of their six
restaurants: where the choices range from informal pizza or pasta, all the way
through fresh lobster and prime steak.
If you elect not to sleep in, our early Mother’s Day Ride passes Harriet Tubman’s
cabin and pays tribute to the woman who escaped north to become a conductor
on the Underground Railroad. Tubman, the “Moses of her people,” was a maternal
inspiration who guided 300 slaves to freedom. Back at the Hyatt, we’ll have time to
clean up and check out before our farewell banquet—a fabulous cruise ship buffet.
At $889 per person our resort-class rally includes a 4-day resort stay at the
Chesapeake Bay’s finest spa/resort, a daily choice of expertly-designed routes,
endless regional cuisine (all meals except on the two open evenings), chartered river
cruise, historical interpretation, ferry crossing, mechanical assistance, admissions,
photographer and more. Like all Santana events, the best part is certain to be the
new friends you’ll make; healthy fun-loving couples that enjoy shared adventure.
Easy to get to, the Chesapeake Bay Hyatt is a short drive from Baltimore Washington
International—the convenient Southwest Airlines hub famous for its low fares. We’ll
send tips on flying with your tandem (easier than you think) plus a discounted freightrate if your tandem is afraid to fly. Even though a sell-out is projected, here’s an early
bird bonus. Our block of rooms includes a limited number of “Waterview Kings.”
These upscale rooms with a gorgeous view and private balcony are a perfect place
to relax while enjoying a Chesapeake sunset. Normally $359 per night, while supplies
last you can upgrade into one of these exceptional rooms for only $75 per couple!

GREAT LAKES TANDEM RALLY
JULY 4TH VACATION WEEK • JUNE 29–JULY 2, 2009
With more miles of shoreline, more state parks and more lighthouses
than any other American county, Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula,
jutting into the deep blue waters of Lake Michigan, is perfectly sized
for 4 days of tandeming. Because you’re never more than 5 miles
from the water, this unspoiled region—dotted with fishing villages, farms
and orchards—is the “Cape Cod of the Midwest.”
Discovered Door County?
With its limestone bluffs, sand beaches and rural farms, Door County is a natural
haven from the stress of daily life. The waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan have
carved Door County’s rocky shoreline into a labyrinth of caves, arches and cliffs. The
stunning overall effect is that this magnificent landscape resembles New England
more than the Midwest. Despite its rugged coastline, the peninsula is remarkably flat,
and its network of lightly-traveled farm roads is unbeatable. This is Americana at its
finest—three dozen farming and fishing settlements (all with fewer than 1,000
residents), 500 craft and antique shops, and over a hundred fruit and cider stands.
36
Summer in the Midwest can be
steamy hot. In Door County,
however, cool lake breezes create
midsummer weather that’s perfect
for tandeming. Ideally scheduled for
the four weekdays preceeding the
4th of July weekend, with a four
day absense from work, our rally
becomes the centerpiece of a
relaxing 9-day vacation.
Our home for four days is the elegant Landmark Resort. Door County’s comfiest fullservice resort is centrally located in Egg Harbor, a picture postcard fishing village
halfway up the forested 50-mile long (and 6–10 mile wide) upper peninsula. The
Landmark Resort is a collection of beautifully-appointed luxury suites strung along
a bluff overlooking the Lake Michigan’s sapphire blue waters. Most units include a
living room, dining area, kitchen, bedroom, and private viewdeck or patio.
Monday, June 29. A mid-afternoon check-in allows time to take a 14-mile warmup to
explore Peninsula State Park with its Eagle Bluff Lighthouse and Observation Tower.
What’s better than ice cream? A great return ride, by way of Bluff Drive and White
Cliff Road, pauses in the village of Fish Creek to sample an exquisite frozen custard
at “Not Licked Yet.”
Later, we’ll reconvene at the Landmark for our welcoming meal. This reception, high
above the water on the westward facing bluff, allows us to get to know each other
while absorbing a sunset display of crimson skies mirrored in the glittering surface
of Lake Michigan.
Tuesday’s 30–55 mile group ride options head south along Ledge Road to Little
Harbor. Long riders will continue to the Sturgeon Bay Canal and the U.S. Coast
Guard Lighthouse before rejoining the short riders to pass Whitefish Dunes and
Cave Point. After skirting Clark Lake we’ll stop for a lunch al fresco at Jacksonport’s
waterfront park. Besides a terrific deli spread, our lunch will feature just-picked
fruits from Door County orchards. From lunch it’s an easy 8-mile jaunt through
rich farmlands to reach our comfy base. Before dinner, there’s time for swimming,
shopping or a soothing nap. From the resort’s terrace we’ll watch as talented chefs
prepare a traditional Door County “fish boil.” When the cauldron over the open
fire reaches a boil, floating oils from the whitefish steaks spill into the flames—the
resulting dramatic fireball signals a perfectly prepared meal. Retiring to the glassfront dining room, we’ll enjoy a feast made better by a lakefront panorama of azure
waters specked with dozens of emerald islets. Did you leave room for dessert? We’ll
have hot-from-the-oven Door County cherry pie!
DOOR COUNTY
Great Lakes Tandem Rally
Wednesday, after a healthy cyclists’
breakfast our 40–66 mile ride options
head north through the waterfront village
of Ephraim before stopping for a coffee
break at Sister Bay, where sure-footed
goats graze on grass-covered roofs.
From Ellison Bay long riders will forge
onward to the ferry landing at Gill’s
Rock, for a gentle crossing to Washington
Island—the largest Icelandic enclave
west of Reykjav—while slower rides take
time to pick fresh cherries. All routes
follow Mink River Road to Grandma’s,
for an authentic Swedish smorgasbord
overlooking Rowley’s Bay. After lunch,
we’ll use Old Stage Road to reach Cana
Island—where we’ll shed our shoes and
wade across a shallow channel to reach
the island and its famous lighthouse.
Tonight is purposely left open so you may enjoy an evening with new friends.
Spectacular seafood restaurants, tables at local farmhouses, dinner theaters and
“barn concerts” are but a few of the attractions available on a warm midsummer
evening in neighborly Door County.
Because Santana’s adventure starts on the Monday of a holiday week, it’s easy
to convert a four-day absence from work into nine-day family vacation. A day’s
drive for the world’s largest concentration of tandem enthusiasts, our limited block
of 70 rooms is likely to sell out early. Additionally, those at the top of the list will
automatically get a better room.
If you want to fly to our rally, Egg harbor is just 90 minutes from Green Bay’s airport,
or a pleasant lakeshore drive from Milwaukee or Chicago’s O’Hare. If you don’t
want to take your bike on the plane, Santana’s U.S. rallies feature prearranged lowcost round-trip shipping. Santana’s tandem-specific tours and rallies (since 1986)
are open to fun-loving couples and families riding all types and brands of tandems.
Santana ownership is never a requirement. Accompanying family members can also
use trailers or single bikes. And if you want to invite tandem-deficient friends, we
can bring a fresh Santana from the factory. Once they’ve discovered the fun of
tandeming, their basic rental fee can be applied to the subsequent purchase of a
new Santana.
We may have saved the best ride for last. Tandeming towards Thursday’s rosecolored dawn, early-risers will cross the Kangaroo Lake causeway to reach Ridges
Sanctuary in Bailey’s Harbor. Here, we’ll hike along natural sandstone trails tracing
rows of ridges formed when waves furrowed a prehistoric shore. Our quarry? Sedgefilled swales, native orchids, countless shorebirds and a curious pair of tandem
lighthouses. Famous for lighthouses, remote Door County never had an express
train, or even a railroad. But if our return ride is on schedule Farmer Johannson will
have just finished milking his holsteins. When he keys the crossing gates, traffic on
the county highway comes to a stop as his string of
cows crosses back to their pasture. After packing
up and checking out, our rally finale is a cruiseship style brunch accompanied by a slide show
commemorating four days of cycling camaraderie.
Our special price of $849/$349 includes
4 days of superb tandeming along quiet back
roads in the festive company of 70 couples
and families from across the U.S. and Canada,
4 days and 3 nights in a luxurious two-room suite
at the Landmark, memorable meals and receptions,
park admissions, ferry crossings, and a lot more.
Suitable for all cyclists, daily basic routes of no more
than 40 miles can be augmented with longer loops
to visit additional lighthouses and off-shore islands.

Tandem Cruise
A New Type of Bike Tour
A couple of years ago Santana chartered
a cruise ship—the sternwheeler Delta
Queen—for a one-week tandem tour
along the Mississippi River. A luxurious
adventure that exceeded participants’
expectations, the first-ever cyclists’ charter of an entire cruise ship pioneered a
new form of active vacation.
Top ten advantages of a BIKE CRUISE:
1. An extended bicycle tour with no
repacking— allows more time for cycling,
relaxing and sightseeing.
2. A new type of active cruise—combines
gourmet food and guilt-free dining.
3. Convenient: Each morning our luxury
hotel moves ahead and waits for us.
4. Apres cycling, relax on deck and enjoy
the passing scenery while the boat cruises.
5. Late afternoon cruising and overnight repositioning covers more territory—a bicycle
tour that explores multiple regions.
6. We cycle only the prime stretches—
and skip past sections that are trafficky,
boring or industrial.
7. Our cycling-specific charter allows
onboard bike parking and jerseys at
breakfast. At dinner, a coat and tie is
never required.
8. On this cruise you’ll find younger and
more energetic cruise-mates.
9. On any day you don’t feel like riding,
you don’t have to.
10. Cruising and cycling: it’s actually two
vacations for the price of one.
PRAGUE to BUDAPEST
80% FILLED
july 25–Aug 2, 2009
This could be the perfect vacation you’ll always
remember. Tandem riders cannot help but fall in
love with the Danube—where flat bike trails lining
the banks plus beautiful roads into the forested hills
allow every couple to set their own daily challenge.
You’ll also love the comfort and cuisine of our cruise
ship; which enables a nine-day cycling tour with no
repacking. Whereas most cyclists need 15-20 days to
follow the Danube through four countries, by meeting
us at the end of each ride and then repositioning at
night to avoid boring sections, our floating hotel allows
us to cover this distance in nine days (while allowing
ample time to explore Vienna and Budapest).
After an optional
2-day pretour in
Prague (Capital
of the Czech
Republic), we'll
pick up last
minute arrivals
at the airport
and then cross
the border into
Germany
to
embark on our
chartered 5-star
cruise ship that
same afternoon.
In
additional
to Prague, our
tour reaches three more European capitals (Vienna,
Bratislava and Budapest). Our week of rides along
the Danube allow us to explore the Shlogen Gorge,
Wachau Valley, Vienna Woods, Danube Elbow and
scores of historic villages (including Passau, Linz,
Melk, Durnstein, Komarno, Esztergom, Visegrad and
Szentendrei). Tandeming into Budapest, we'll find our
cruise ship at the very center of Europe's most vibrant
city. Based on the unanimous acclaim of those who
signed up earliest, we extended our original charter
and will use the boat as our perfectly sited hotel
for an extra day and night in the exotic “Paris of the
East.” An accompanying photo (showing Budapest's
Chain Bridge and hilltop castle) was taken from our
mooring spot; next to historic walking district and main
shopping street.
As with Santana’s wildly successful Mississippi
adventure, chartering a cruise ship for a bike tour
means our 5-star hotel travels to meet us at the end
of each ride. Because the drudgery of daily repacking
is avoided, this tandem-specific cruise vacation
provides an extra hour of leisure per day---more time
for cycling, sightseeing and sleeping. After we leave
the ship each morning, our sleek and powerful hotel
will pass us before tying up 30-40 miles downriver,
where we'll reboard for lunch. "Short" riders will stay
on board for an afternoon cruise while "Medium"
riders disembark to continue downstream for another
20-30 miles. If you want something more strenuous,
Santana's European distributor Wolfgang Haas
(tandeming's answer to Arnold Schwarzenegger) will
guide "Long" riders on pre- and post-lunch journeys
into the surrounding forested hills. No matter which
route you choose, inviting villages are usually less
The Adventure Begins
a note from Bill McCready
President & Founder; Santana Cycles, Inc.
It started with a pre-dawn phone call
from Robert Baur; a renowned European
chef and hotel owner who has become a
great friend.
"Bill, turn on your computer. I've been
working on a European version of your
Mississippi tour. I've had discussions with
a fleet owner and sent him one of your
catalogs. He likes your tandems and
wants to work with us. You and Jan need
to fly over next week. I’ve already negotiated an option for a charter of his 5-star
Amadeus Symphony. He's invited us to
take an inspection cruise. Here's the link."
than ten miles apart. The Danube's castle-lined route
from Bavaria to Budapest is not only downhill, the
prevailing summer breezes are tailwinds.
Launched in 2003, the Amadeus Symphony was
engineered to squeeze through locks and pass under
centuries-old bridges. By cruise ship standards, all 73
outside staterooms are generously proportioned, and
come with individual thermostats, panoramic view
windows, large private baths, soundproofed walls, and
king-sized beds. Austrian-owned, the spotlessly-clean
vessel is a 5-star (the highest rating) fully air-conditioned non-smoking cruise-ship with English speaking
crew and wait-staff. The spacious aft dining room and
inviting forward lounge both include floor-to-ceiling
windows. Our tandems will enjoy a small portion of
the panorama deck; which is nearly as long as a
football field. If the Danube's level is unseasonably
high we may need to lay our bikes down in order to
pass beneath historic stone spans. River locks?
We'll traverse more than a dozen.
In addition to Wolfgang's help designing routes
(Santana's Euro-HQ is an hour's drive from the Danube);
Robert Baur will work with the boat's Chef to make
sure our meals include the finest signature dishes
from all 5 countries. Additionally, as the Danube is an
acclaimed wine-growing region, Robert will make sure
that our evening meals are expertly paired with wines
from the vineyards we ride through. Our worldly tour
hosts Jan and Bill McCready will select guides, sights
and entertainers.
Pricing for this 9-day European cruise/tour with 8 days
of great tandeming and 8 nights in a king-bedded view
cabin starts at $4195 per person. More extensive
than most cycling tours, our tandem-specific
itinerary includes airport transfers, a wide choice of
daily rides (plus the unique ability to skip any day
of cycling by remaining on our cruise ship), admissions
and guides, all meals, gourmet dinners with local beer
or wine, nightly cultural entertainment, and (best
of all) the enthusiastic company of energetic and
adventuresome couples.
Because teams on Santana’s VIP e-mail list (see page
26) have already responded in great numbers, this
event is filling fast. For more info, FAQs, dates and
current stateroom availability, please visit the events
section at www.santanatandem.com.
Surfing the web and half asleep, I was
soon looking at pictures of sleek cruise
ships while Robert (a tandem rider who’s
helped Jan and I produce many of Santana’s
best tours) continued his sales pitch:
"Instead of four states like your Mississippi
tour, a cruise down the Danube through
Vienna to Budapest can start in Bavaria
and include tandem rides in four countries. And while I am sure Natchez and
New Orleans are nice, this cruise would
include Vienna and Budapest."
"Where will we start?"
"I was thinking of Prague."
"Does the Danube flow through Prague?"
"No, but it comes very close, and Prague
has a great airport. Because Prague is
as intriguing as Florence and more
beautiful than Venice; starting anywhere
else would be a pity."
Two weeks later Jan, Robert and I
boarded the Amadeus Symphony. Joining us was Wolfgang Haas—the super-fit
Bavarian whose tandem specialty shop
(Europe's largest) is a short distance
away. The four of us quickly agreed that
a tour combining a luxurious cruise ship
with the Danube’s sights and cycling, will
be a magical adventure. Care to join us?

HEART OF EUROPE
NEW DATES
AUGUST 9-17, 2009
Santana’s Signature Tour
Make no mistake, Europe’s Bodensee is our favorite
destination. Imagine a clear blue lake nestled at the
base of the Swiss Alps. A lake so large that two other
countries, Germany and Austria, share its 270km
shoreline. Imagine a week of great cycling that circles
the lake, visits 3 countries and includes the authentic
historic and cultural diversions we expect from Europe:
quirky castles, half-timbered houses, intriguing museums,
baroque churches, open-air markets and colorful
pageants. How about a FUN place where shopkeepers,
hotel owners and chefs strive to convince you that their
shore of the lake offers the finest shopping, comfiest inns
and most satisfying cuisine.
Better than France or Italy?
When visiting Europe, American tourists too often follow
well worn paths through a relatively small number of
provinces. As these once charming areas become
overrun by English-speaking tourists, the locals can
become unfriendly, and even resentful. When American
cyclists mindlessly visit these same overexposed regions,
they cannot hope to experience the full warmth and
friendliness of Europe. Back in 1993, when Santana
proposed an international tandem tour that Europeans
would want to attend, we learned that European cyclists
weren’t interested in riding through an area crowded
with American tourists. Where did they want to ride? In
the summer (when Mallorca becomes too hot), the
favorite destination of Europe’s cyclists is the Bodensee.
Perfect for all levels of cycling, this is a tour where you
won’t need to look at a map or routesheet. Where, if
you keep the lake on your right, a few days of fantastic
cycling will bring you back to your starting point.
Where, along the way, you cross international borders
to sample the gracious hospitality of five European
cultures. Teams who want to take it easy can follow the
Bodensee’s level shoreline bike paths to pass through
fascinating villages every 3-4 miles. Energetic couples
who wish to venture farther from shore, can join Bill and
Jan McCready to explore untrafficked lanes through a
rolling quiltwork of orchards, forests and vineyards.
Strong couples who want to
burn zillions of calories, can
join European tandem teams on
vigorous climbs into the adjacent
German, Swiss and Austrian
Alps. And on any day that you
don’t care to ride (or if you
linger too long in some
enchanted village), simply coast
to the shore, wheel your tandem
onto a ferry for a cruise to our
next luxurious lakefront hotel.
Improved itinerary
Originally design as a “couples-only”
event, Santana’s Bodensee tour
included museum visits, formal castle
receptions and long dress-up evenings.
While many loved this “romantic” format,
parents quickly realized that the Bodensee—a
favorite destination for European families—would be a
perfect place for a return visit with their children.
In 2004 we tested a “family friendly” version that traded
some fancy meals and dressy evenings for outdoor
activities that went way beyond cycling. Guess what—
the “youthful” itinerary with roller-toboggans, aerial
trams and a chartered steam cog train was a ton more
fun—even for adults. We project that for 2009, about a
third of the couples on this event will bring children
(or grandchildren); with most in the age range of 9-17.
Priced at $3695 per adult and $1295 per child, lots
more info on our 8-day tour can be found in the future
events section of the santanatandem.com website.
Additionally, since the Bodensee (aka Lake Constance)
is where Count Zeppelin invented his famous airship, as
Never heard of the Bodensee?
Don’t bother checking English-language tour guides; this
is a resort area that Europeans have saved for themselves.
Bodensee is a lesisure region known for its medieval
castles, beautiful scenery, walled villages and friendly
hotels. Although you’ll see snow-capped alpine peaks in
the distance, the elevation of the lake is a mere 1,300
feet. Europeans who visit the Bodensee will park their
cars for their entire stay. To explore the region’s
attractions they simply walk down to the lake and catch
one of the dozens of shoreline ferries that stop at no
fewer than thirty-nine villages. The primary sports of this
romantic region are sailing,
cycling and relaxation.

Santana’s events are open to all
tandem riders and their immediate family
members (accompaniment using single bikes
and trailers is okay). All brands of tandems
are welcome—Santana ownership is never a
requirement.
TOUR vs. RALLY vs. CRUISE
The typical Santana tandem rally includes
a four day immersion in a luxurious resort.
Our combined route map of spectacular
daily rides might resemble a four leaf clover.
Particularly rewarding regions necessitate an
in depth 4–10 day tour with multiple hotels.
Here our route can be compared to a string of
rare pearls. The best of both worlds, a tandem
cruise utilizes a chartered cruise ship to
cover more ground without the need for daily
repacking. In all instances, tandeming allows
a shared exploration of a region’s unique treasures; including cuisine, architecture, history,
arts and more.

Per industry standards, comparison weights are for small models with rigid seatposts, lighter tires, Ultegra cassette and no pedals.
When comparing weights: instead of cutting corners Santana combines larger-yet-lighter frame tubes (stronger alloys drawn to thinner gauges) with heavier tandem-specific components to create identically-light
bikes with a superior blend of stiffness, comfort, reliability and speed. Because all Santana tandems are handmade, weights may vary slightly from tandem to tandem.

PRODUCT CARE
We have spares—call us or see your dealer
Santana maintains the most extensive tandem testing program in the entire bicycle industry. We regularly execute dozens of qualitative tests to
improve performance in areas such as stability, efficiency, handling, comfort, safety and durability. Only after surviving rigorous lab and field
tests are our innovations scheduled for production. Once in the manufacturing cycle, our Quality Assurance Team takes charge and another level
of scrutiny begins. Raw materials as well as frames in the midst of fabrication are carefully inspected and tested against the highest imaginable
standards. The results are meticulously crafted tandems which you can depend on to provide unequaled performance year after year.

OUR EUROPEAN CONNECTION
Wolfgang Haas, a tandem owner since 1983, became
Santana’s European distributor in 1987. In addition to
running a warehouse and tandem boutique, he logs
thousands of kilometers each year racing, touring and
testing both road and mountain tandems. Past tours
have taken him to the corners of Europe, America and
New Zealand. Competitions include various endurance
rides and the Roc d’Azur. Since 1992 Wolfgang has organized
annual tandem events hosting thousands of Europeans. So
whether you need a tandem, spare parts or just some helpful
advice, Europe’s #1 tandem resource is at your service.
Where can you find Europe’s best selection of lightweight

iding singles towards the top of a Swiss pass,
young cyclists Philippe and Kathrin spotted a
pair of bright jerseys on the switchback below.
Imagining their Alpine pursuers must be racers, the
couple wondered if they could reach the summit first.
Seconds later, as the matched “racers” flew past,
Philippe and Kathrin were amazed by the speed and
elegance of a middle-aged couple on a touring tandem.
The following week, in 2003, Philippe and Kathrin
traded singles for their own tandem. With the strength
gained from five years of teamwork, this Swiss couple

While planning their 35th wedding anniversary, the
California couple shown in their dynamic team colors,
Rich and Mary Ellen, found a copy of this publication,
