2014 - Tacoma Art Museum
ANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR 2014 July 1, 2013–June 30, 2014 1 Seattle arts patron Anne Gould Hauberg recently completed her gift of her entire collection of studio art glass to Tacoma Art Museum. An important focus of her collecting has been the women artists who worked at the Pilchuck Glass School, including the important work by Cappy Thompson, I Receive a Great Blessing from the Sun and the Moon: I Will Be an Artist and Walk the Path of Beauty (1995). In this work, Thompson demonstrates her mastery of traditional stained glass techniques over the course of her renowned career. Cappy Thompson, I Receive a Great Blessing from the Sun and the Moon: I Will Be an Artist and Walk the Path of Beauty, 1995. Blown glass and fired enamels, 17 × 14½ × 14½ inches. Exhibitions included groundbreaking work by emerging Native American photographer Matika Wilbur, a 50-year retrospective of Camille Patha’s paintings, rare works of Agnes Martin, the watercolors of Z. Vanessa Helder, and Jennifer Steinkamp’s illuminated Shimmering Tree. Additionally, many of the museum’s programs featured women, and the museum supported a Tacoma appearance of The Guerrilla Girls, a feminist activist group devoted to equality in the arts. According to the National Museum of Women in the Arts, 51% of visual artists today are women; they also report that H.W. Janson’s widely-used survey, History of Art, includes only 27 women (up from zero in the 1980s)*. The Guerrilla Girls note that only 3% of the artists included in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art are women*. Tacoma Art Museum’s representation of women in the arts is one example of how the museum strives to be a leader for regional museums. We hope you enjoyed experiencing the work of all the artists TAM featured during fiscal year 2014. *www.nmwa.org/advocate/get-facts 5 Exhibitions Creating the New Northwest: Selections from the Herb and Lucy Pruzan Collection June 15, 2013–October 6, 2013 This exhibition organized by Tacoma Art Museum. “…enough time has passed that these artists have shifted from being my contemporaries — artists I saw at receptions or felt intimidated by, was glad for, or maybe jealous of—to being a canon of sealed up history that now belongs to the world. Because these artists have risen like cream among us, we are also a part of it. So visit this show, which will not travel anywhere else, in order to find your place in this unique history.” —Saylor Jones, Art Access, July 1, 2013 6 Exhibitions Austere Beauty: The Art of Z. Vanessa Helder July 27, 2013–October 20, 2013 This exhibition organized by Tacoma Art Museum. “Fashions in visual art can change, almost overnight sometimes, and reputations can disappear, often with startling thoroughness. Occasionally, however, diligent curators or art historians rescue artists from the past whose work still seems fresh, strong and enduring decades after their heyday. That’s what Seattle gallerist David F. Martin and Tacoma Art Museum (TAM) curator Margaret E. Bullock have been doing for 20th-century Pacific Northwest artists at the Tacoma Art Museum…Now they’ve done the same for Z. Vanessa Helder (1904–1968), a painter born in Lynden, Whatcom County, who was active in Seattle and Spokane in the 1930s and 1940s. Helder is primarily a watercolorist—but watercolorist doesn’t remotely convey the flavor of her work.” —Michael Upchurch, Seattle Times, September 8, 2013 7 Exhibitions Sitting for History: Exploring Self-Identity Through Portraiture August 3, 2013–January 12, 2014 Generous support provided by Union Bank. This exhibition organized by Tacoma Art Museum. “This seems to be one of those in-between-shows periods at Tacoma Art Museum when they trot out stuff from their permanent collection to fill the galleries. It’s a good thing, too, because they have some outstanding art that we’d otherwise seldom or never get to see… “Sitting for History: Exploring Self-Identify Through Portraiture,” (is) an exhibition of more than 60 paintings, drawings and photographs by artists such as Pierre August Renoir, Chuck Close, George Luks, Mary Randlett, Gilbert Stuart and Andrew Wyeth, plus some sculpture and jewelry. It is an intriguing show juxtaposing historical paintings and ultra-modern art.” —Alec Clayton, The Weekly Volcano, November 21, 2013 8 Exhibitions Optic Nerve: The Art of Perception November 12, 2013–April 20, 2013 This exhibition organized by Tacoma Art Museum. “Many different kinds of art are on display for this exhibit, since a focus of op art is experimentation not just with color and content but form. TAM’s exhibit features pieces from noted op artists Bridget Riley, Richard Anuszkiewicz, and Victor Vasarely as well as Northwest op artists Spencer Moseley and Francis Celentano. A few of these were essential names in the op art boom of the 60s, when the boldness and innovation of the movement impacted culture from design to fashion.” —Elisabeth Schyberg, South Sound Magazine, November 1, 2013 9 Exhibitions Shimmering Tree: A Projection by Jennifer Steinkamp November 9, 2013–January 26, 2014 Generously sponsored by The Boeing Company and Propel Insurance. This exhibition is supported, in part, by a grant from the Washington State Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. This exhibition organized by Tacoma Art Museum. Additional support provided by Helen and Peter Bing. This exhibition organized by Tacoma Art Museum. “Fans of the series say its timing could not be better. With mainstream America showing more support for efforts to end appropriation of Native American imagery in sports and fashion, Project 562 provides positive examples to fill the void.” —Emanuella Grinberg, CNN Living, July 30, 2014 11 Exhibitions Ink This! As we undertook our expansion into what is now the Haub Family Galleries, we expended about $10M in previously received campaign gifts. Total support and revenue totaled $7,443,791 which includes annual contributed and earned income, campaign gifts and positive investment returns. This compares favorably to a typical year. FY13 was atypical in that we received in excess of $20,000,000 in restricted funds for the Haub Family Galleries expansion. The museum’s change of assets in FY14 was a positive $2,696,082. The independent audit firm of Brantley, Janson, Yost & Ellison issued an unqualified or “clean” audit report. Excluding investment, campaign, and restricted contributions the museum reported a break-even operating result. The Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, and museum staff deserve recognition for their hard work ensuring a strong future for Tacoma Art Museum. We are most appreciative of the dedicated members and supporters who provide the critical support that enables the museum to fulfill its mission of “connecting people through art”.
