“We are not only honored to have established
one of the first law firm women’s initiatives,
but also extremely proud of the great strides
we have made in fostering the professional
growth of our women attorneys and addressing
the unique challenges that they face. ”
MARIA (KIKI) KATINA KAROS
Chair, Sedgwick Women’s Forum
message from the chair
Welcome to the Sedgwick Women’s Forum 2014 Annual Report —
and join me in celebrating the Forum’s 10th anniversary!
When the Sedgwick Women’s Forum was founded in 2004 with a robust
budget and strong support of the firm’s leadership, it was uncommon for
a law firm to have a women’s initiative program. We are not only honored
to have established one of the first law firm women’s initiatives, but
also extremely proud of the great strides we have made in fostering the
professional growth of our women attorneys and addressing the unique
challenges that they face. I am personally honored to succeed the many
great leaders of the Women’s Forum. Without their leadership and the
commitment and support of the firm’s leadership to the advancement of
women, we would not have realized our many successes.
In reflecting on the past 10 years, this year’s Annual Report looks back at
our past, reports on the present and looks forward to the many goals and
aspirations we have for the future. Our areas of focus in 2014 included
succession planning and development of future leaders, business development, attorney retention and recruiting, and continued education
with a focus on implicit bias in the law. This Annual Report includes
industry-wide statistics as compared to Sedgwick; a summary of individual
professional achievements, successes, awards and accomplishments of
Sedgwick women; and future goals.
On behalf of the entire Women’s Forum Board, I would like to thank
our Advisory Council, colleagues and friends for their work toward our
mission. Your leadership support and passion continues to inspire us.

1 | INTRODUCTION & MESSAGES
As I begin my tenure as chair of the
firm, I look forward to carrying on
the outstanding support that we
have given to the Sedgwick
Women’s Forum. With our existing foundation as
a framework, I am fully confident that our
Women’s Forum leaders will continue to raise
the bar through their dedication to the cause
and their ability to affect change within the firm
and even within the legal industry. We recognize
that the greater the role women attorneys play
in leadership, the stronger the firm will become.
Here’s to the next decade of innovative and
effective Women’s Forum programs.
Mike
MICHAEL F. HEALY | Partner, San Francisco
Chair of the Firm
The legal profession has evolved
over the last 10 years, and the
Sedgwick Women’s Forum has
played a significant role in driving
change within the firm and the communities we
serve. The Women’s Forum has instilled a culture
of commitment that assures we create opportunities for advancement and engagement for
women in the firm and beyond our walls. The
efforts of the members of our Women’s Forum
remind us, every day, of the critical importance
that diversity plays in our commitment to our
clients, our community and members of the
Sedgwick family. We know our leadership needs
to not just talk the talk, but also walk the walk.

Business development is personal empowerment. The Women’s
Forum understands business development is multi-faceted, and our
many and varied women-centered events support this key concept.
Whether it’s a legal event targeted to specific litigation experience, a
fun and informative social gathering, a community-oriented charity
activity or an inspirational talk or documentary, all Women’s Forum
events are focused on the development of the whole woman. This
approach has yielded positive results in the business world, as well as
in our members’ personal lives.

WHAT WAS SAID —
“The event last night was just fabulous! Thank you soooo much for
inviting me. I cannot tell you the last time I’ve been so moved by a
presentation. So much of what she said resonated with me and I gained
quite a bit of insight. As a result, I’m feeling kinda powerful today. “
“Being in the presence of an incredible woman like Joyce Roché is
such a gift. I left feeling completely inspired. Thank you for creating
such a great event.”
“After hearing Joyce share her journey with the imposter syndrome,
we can all embrace our successes a little more!”
“Joyce Roché was truly inspiring and I feel so fortunate to have had
the opportunity to hear her share her life stories and speak about
her book.”
“I was anticipating the program all day, and it was even better than I
expected!! Joyce is extraordinary and her experiences and successes
demonstrate her valor. I am so glad she wrote the book!”
Law Student Attendee: “Thank you for inviting me. I met a lot of
successful women, which is always inspiring for someone trying to
get to that point of success one day. Ms. Roché’s words and stories
touched me, for I have been that Black female student in a class, not
wanting to raise my hand, scared of what my peers might think. And
as she said, minutes later, someone else is saying what I had been
thinking minutes before. Her message was great and I am excited to
read her book.”

Sedgwick LLP in 1971, and Sedgwick has never been
the same. Women have added a perspective and power
that has strengthened the firm, reminding us that
our history is also “herstory.” For the last 10 years, the
Women’s Forum has been here to preserve and advance
this vast resource of female talent and looks forward to a
