Welcome to this first edition of
“A Healthier You.” This publication is
the first of many new communications
tools we will be developing over the next few years to ensure
we are providing you, the residents of Vancouver Island, with
the information you need to keep yourselves and your families
healthy, to prevent illness and disease, and to access health and
community services in the community where you live.
A key factor facing VIHA and health jurisdictions across
the country is how to deliver quality health care in the context
of an aging population, increased technology costs, and growing
demand and expectations for services across a region that is made
up of diverse communities. One of the ways VIHA will strive to
improve the health of our population is to ensure citizens have
access to a wide range of information that both informs you on
how to stay healthy and also provides you with information on
programs, treatment options, and services in the community
where you live.
VIHA provides a full range of progressive health programs
and services including pre-natal and infant care, child, youth
and family care, environmental health, home care and supports,
primary health care, residential care, mental health and substance
use services, seniors care, rehabilitation, and end-of-life care. We
exist to serve and support you and your family at each stage of
your lives.
While this publication is about you, none of these services
would be possible without our dedicated staff, partner physicians
and volunteers. It is through these professionals that the citizens
of Vancouver Island are afforded access to one of the most
successful and progressive health care systems in the world. To
our employees, partner physician and volunteers, I extend my
deepest gratitude for the work you do.
To the citizens of Vancouver Island, your health and
your care is our business. You are the reason we exist. It is my
hope that readers of this publication will be empowered with
information that will lead to “A Healthier You.”

ISLAND HEALTH
the People
behind theCare
Vancouver Island Health Authority employs more than 17,000
people. They are your neighbours, your friends and members
of your community – in fact, chances are you know someone
who works for VIHA. And while most people tend to think of
doctors and nurses when they think of health providers, there
are so many others who contribute to your health and well‐being.
From the staff in laundry who make sure there are clean sheets for every bed to the admin personnel who make sure the
bills are paid, there are thousands of people who contribute to ensuring Vancouver Island’s residents have the best care
possible.
Passionate about their work, VIHA staff are equally as passionate about their contributions to their community and the
world at large. Just to give you an idea of the depth and breadth of talent of the organization, we have profiled five of our
employees throughout this publication. Look for them under the headline “The People Behind the Care.”
Michele Mundy
Cultural Safety Coordinator
Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria
One of the initiatives
introduced in VIHA‘s
updated Aboriginal Health
Plan is the commitment to
make VIHA services and
facilities more culturally safe
for Aboriginal clients.
Cultural Safety is the
practice of being mindful
of how historical relationships between Aboriginal
people and the health care system can impact current
perceptions.
To facilitate this, VIHA has hired Cultural Safety
Coordinator Michele Mundy. “My focus is to integrate
cultural understanding into our care giving,” notes
Michele. “When people feel a sense of safety with their
care providers, they are more likely to use those services
and will benefit from consistent health care.”
Michele is Kwakwaka’ wakw, from the ‘Namgis

First Nation of Alert Bay, BC. “I have learned to walk
in both worlds,” notes Michele. “I grew up in a First
Nations community and understand the challenges our
Aboriginal people have and continue to face. I have a
deep appreciation for our land and our history, but have
lived in Victoria, working in the Aboriginal community,
for the majority of my life—I know the struggles and the
triumphs of our Aboriginal people both in smaller more
isolated communities and in the urban setting.”
With young children still in school, Michele doesn’t
have much time for travel so she and her family have
opened their home to international students for the
past six years, allowing them to exchange their cultural
experiences. “We may not be able to travel right now
so instead of going to visit new countries and learning
about their culture and traditions, we bring them into
our home,” says Michele. “We’ve had students from
around the world come to stay with us and have learned
as much about their world as they have about ours and
it’s a wonderful way to expand our knowledge, share
and appreciate our differences and similarities.” Michele
recently joined VIHA.

TO THE HUMAN BODY
RECOVERY MATTRESS™
Ironman Mattresses with Celiant® and Cellitex® have been proven in clinical test to reduce pain,
increase oxygen levels, and help balance body temperature. Each of these results can have added
benefits, including faster healing, increased performance, better quality sleep and improved overall
wellness; all of which can help alleviate the symptoms of arthritis and peripheral vascular disease
often associated with diabetes.
The key to Celliant® lies in its ability to absorb and store electromagnetic (energy) emissions from
the human body and release them where they are reabsorbed into the skin and deep muscle tissue,
they act as catalysts for natural, biological processes resulting in enhanced oxygen levels, and more

ISLAND HEALTH
5 Tips for A Healthier You
1
Boost your energy with
Water
Water does more than quench your thirst; it can promote
weight loss by filling you up and prevent fatigue and
headaches caused by dehydration – in fact, researchers have found
that drinking water increases alertness. Next time you need a
boost, turn on the tap.
2
Sleep 8 hours a night
A number of recent studies have confirmed what your
mother always told you—you really do need at least 8
hours a night. Among the many benefits: adequate sleep
makes you feel better, decreases risk for cardiovascular disease,
and boosts memory.
Physical Activity
Regular
makes
you feel better ... and it could save your life
4
Who doesn’t want to reduce their risk of disease, improve their
fitness level, reduce the effects of stress, increase energy and
maintain positive mental health?
All these benefits can come from doing moderate intensity exercise
for just 150 minutes a week or 20 minutes a day. Can’t achieve the
ideal? Find 10 minutes two or three times a day.
Regular activity such as brisk walking can help to reduce the risk
of premature death and chronic diseases such as coronary heart
disease, stroke, hypertension, cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis.
You don’t have to join a gym or buy expensive equipment to be
active. Park a few blocks away and walk, get off the bus one stop
earlier or better yet, walk or cycle to your destination. Make sure
you get up and move around every hour – walk to the furthest
restroom or coffee machine, or suggest “walking” meetings. Go for
a walk after dinner instead of turning on the TV. Get off the couch
and do 10 minutes of vigorous work around your home – not only
will you feel better, you’ll get through your “to do” list faster. Be the
kind of person who looks for opportunities to move, not to sit.

3
Reduce
Weight
There are many tips,
plans, programs and research
studies available to help with
weight reduction. If it all seems
overwhelming, start with
something simple like portion
size and healthier choices.
Noticing and changing how
often you consume high‐fat,
high‐salt, high‐sugar foods and
drinks can be the first step in a
healthy eating plan.
De-Clutter
to reduce stress
Can’t find your keys? Your mail?
Your cat?
Clutter creates stress in our
lives by making it difficult for us
to find the things we need. It
also creates visual stress – living
with piles of old magazines,
unsorted mail and mounds of
laundry is stressful. Clutter‐free
living means we can find what
we need without an anxiety‐
inducing search and find
harmony in our surroundings.
Do yourself a favour and spend
at least five minutes
a day sorting, putting
away and discarding
stuff – your cat will
thank you.

Who to Believe?
A Medical Health
Officer’s Perspective
Dr. Richard Stanwick is
VIHA’s Chief Medical Health
Officer.
Today’s media often entertain (while trying to
inform) the public with health/illness news. Their stories
range from presenting amazing medical survival “against
all the odds” to trumpeting yet another promising lab
discovery—one that could be at the treatment stage in
as soon as ten years. At the same time, the evening news
features images of horrific car crashes, house fires, floods
and landslides as well as outbreaks of communicable
disease, making us all feel vulnerable. What is the truth?
Are we living longer because of miracle cures or are we
dying sooner because of natural disasters?
The Canadian Institute for Health Information
(CIHI) is a national organization that collects, analyzes
and publishes data and information in a standardized
way. This allows for, among other things, the comparison
of various Canadian populations. Their recent report,
Health Indicators 2012, suggests the media’s portrayal of
health outcomes may not be the whole story.
The findings come from the use of something called
“avoidable mortality indicators.” The report trends the
proportion of deaths before the age of 75 years that
products) has seen this death rate decrease by an
impressive 47% from 225 per 100,000 in 1979 to 119
per 100,000 in 2008.
Meanwhile, deaths that could have been avoided
through timely and effective health care interventions
were reduced by 56%. This rate went from 149 per
100,000 Canadians in 1979 to 66 per 100,000 in 2008.
The drop in these avoidable deaths was mainly due to
reductions in deaths related to heart and cardiovascular
diseases, which decreased by a notable 72%. This
accomplishment is not only significant but supports the
idea that we are getting some things right. However, if
the medical accomplishments for heart and blood vessel
illnesses had not been achieved and instead remained
unchanged for the 30-year period, the overall reduction
in avoidable deaths by medical intervention would have
been only 19%.
“STATISTICS: THE ONLY SCIENCE THAT ENABLES DIFFERENT EXPERTS USING
THE SAME FIGURES TO DRAW DIFFERENT CONCULSIONS.” ‐Evan Esar
could potentially be avoided through timely and effective
disease/injury prevention as well as health care. It takes
into account how the population is “avoiding death”
through successful initiatives including both preventive
measures and medical interventions.
According to CIHI, the death rate from all avoidable
causes of death dropped from 373 per 100,000
Canadians in 1979 to 185 per 100,000 Canadians
in 2008.The reductions are further split into those
attributed to prevention and those to medical measures.
Initiatives to prevent disease (including everything
from programs for quitting smoking, clean air bylaws,
seat belt and bicycle helmet laws, improvements in
motor vehicle safety to trans fat restrictions on baked
Overall, residents of Vancouver Island are being well
served in both prevention and health care intervention
according to the report. The Island’s “avoidable mortality
indicators” fall into either the same as the rest of the
province or, for a significant portion of central and
southern Vancouver Island, the rates are actually lower
(meaning fewer deaths).
This is heartening news for the population, however
there is always room for improvement for the gains
are far from uniform within our local communities.
In future columns, we will explore reasons for these
differences, what can be done and where the biggest
health dividends on investment can be realized.

Plan
There are approximately 40,000 Aboriginal

historical context, unique needs and geographic settings
of our Aboriginal people warrant a health care plan

commitment to health services delivery that reflects and
honours the input and cultural beliefs of Aboriginal
residents.
“The 2012 Aboriginal Health Plan strengthens our
commitment to share our wisdom and vision with VIHA
to develop culturally appropriate and accessible health
care services for Aboriginal residents which, in turn,
will make Aboriginal communities on Vancouver Island
among the healthiest in the province,” said Aboriginal
Health Council Co-Chair Chief David Bob. “Together
we can make change happen.”
Statistics show that Aboriginal people are more likely
to face significant health challenges, to suffer from
chronic diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease and
heart failure, and to die prematurely from a variety of
causes when compared to other Island residents. They are
also more likely to have trouble accessing health care due
to poverty, geographic isolation and the complexity of
health care service delivery.
“All Aboriginal people on Vancouver Island need and
deserve access to quality, timely health care services that
meet their unique cultural and geographical needs and
that is the fundamental purpose behind the Aboriginal
Health Plan,” said Howard Waldner, VIHA’s President
and CEO. “The health authority is committed to

“OUR FAMILIES WORKED TOGETHER ON HEALING. BUT YOU HAVE TO
BELIEVE IN IT ... WE HAD STRONG SPIRITUALITY AND SPIRITUAL HEALERS ...

‐from a story told by an Elder in Ahousat
VIHA, together with Aboriginal partners from around
Vancouver Island, has developed an Aboriginal Health
Plan, entitled Remember the Past, Reflect on the Present,
and Build a Healthy Future. This plan (which can be
found at www.viha.ca) will serve as a guide for VIHA’s
Board, leadership and staff as they work together with
Aboriginal communities to continue to improve the
health status of their residents.
“The voices of the youngest and the oldest need to be
respected, so call them out to your meetings,” said one Elder.
The plan was built after a year of discussion,
engagement and collaboration with Aboriginal people,
listening to their experiences and sharing in the wisdom
of their collective communities. It reinforces VIHA’s
health services that meet the needs of Aboriginal residents
and improving the health status of Aboriginal people
living on Vancouver Island.”
The six strategic themes outlined in the plan include:
tBuild relationships
tImprove access to services
tBuild capacity within VIHA and communities
tProvide innovative services
tBe accountable
tAdvocate to improve the broader determinants of health
Many initiatives identified in the plan are already
underway, including the hiring of Cultural Safety
Coordinator Michele Mundy. Read more about Michele

Dr. Love is a family doctor
with a practice in Nanaimo.
In addition, he also looks
after the 12-bed palliative
care facility at Nanaimo
Regional General Hospital.
“I see palliative care as an
extension of the care a family
doctor provides,” says Dr. Love. “We know the patient,
and generally their family as well, so helping them at
end-of-life is a natural progression.”
Dr. Love was instrumental in developing the palliative
care program in 1991 and has seen it grow from a
6-bed unit to 12 beds. This expansion was possible with
support and funds from the community, raised through
the NRGH Hospital Foundation as well as dollars
provided by VIHA. “We feel strongly that it’s important
to create a quiet, peaceful place that offers families a safe,
homelike environment for these final days,” Dr. Love
adds.
Dr. Love is committed to his palliative care activities
and teaches on this subject internationally. He has also
won several teaching awards for sharing his knowledge
with other medical practitioners. An international
project he is deeply involved in is a palliative care

It’s hard to imagine that Dr. Love has any free time,
but when he does, his passion is woodworking. He
owns a portable sawmill with several friends and creates
beautiful furniture from wood salvaged from urban sites.
“It’s rewarding to work with my hands and to take these
reclaimed pieces of maple and garry oak, turning them
into useful pieces of furniture,” he notes. Dr. Love has

Active Kids
The mind~body connection
Fall is here and the kids are back to school.
You’ve figured out lunches, backpacks and school
supplies, and they’re all signed up for their after-school
activities. But what about their physical fitness? As we
settle into our cool weather routines, we may have to
work harder to find ways to keep our kids active.
Most parents are aware of the importance of physical
activity for kids to prevent overweight- and obesityrelated diseases like diabetes, but are you aware of the
other benefits of physical activity for your kids? For
children and youth, research supports that physical
activity actually improves mental health, reducing
depression and anxiety and improving overall well-being.
This is called the mind-body connection.
Regular physical activity can actually improve mood,
creating a sense of well-being. This increased wellbeing enhances self-esteem and improves quality of life.
Kids sleep better, their concentration and academic
achievement improves and they report fewer feelings of
anxiety and depression.
All of this combines to give kids and teens more
self-confidence and can have a positive impact on their
relationships with other kids; they feel happier and better
able to cope with the stresses of school.
How much activity do they need to generate these
benefits? According to Canadian Physical Activity
guidelines (www.csep.ca), 5-17 year olds need 60
minutes of moderate to vigorous activity every day along
with strengthening exercises three times a week. For
teens to get the most benefit, physical activity programs
should include social interaction like team sports and
classes, as opposed to individual activities.
Knowing that 60 minutes of daily activity can give
your child or teen everything from improved academic
performance to less anxiety and a greater sense of well12
A Healthier You
being can be very motivating for a parent. The question
is how to pry them away from their “screens” and get
them moving. Here are a few suggestions:
t Sign them up for team sports activities like soccer,
lacrosse and field hockey.
t If your child is not interested in team sports, look at
other options like martial arts.
t If your child is a swimmer, think about swim clubs;
the same goes for skating.
t Encourage them to try out for sports teams they
haven’t tried before; sign up for lessons or camps to
increase their confidence.
t It’s not all about sports; dance is a great way to be
active—and dance isn’t just for girls. Look for hip
hop and break dance lessons for your boys.
t Try to do more physical activities as a family like
family bike rides when weather permits and indoor
activities like family swim or skate night at your
local recreation centre.
t Look for opportunities to move and encourage your
kids to join in—whether it’s raking the leaves, taking
the dog for a walk or washing the car.
t The important thing is to keep them moving—be a
role model and turn off your own screens and spend
time being active together.
Kids’ activities can be expensive; look for communitybased team sports and recreation centre activities which
may cost less. Most sports associations also offer bursaries
or reduced fees for families where costs are an issue. Your
school administrator might also have some ideas for
organizations that offer reduced or no-fee activities.

Expanding Emergency Care
to benefit Central and North Island communities
With the opening of Nanaimo Regional
General Hospital’s (NRGH) new Emergency
Department (ED) on October 1, 2012, the
community will have access to a state-of-the-art
facility that provides an exceptional level of general
emergency, trauma and emergency psychiatric care.
“This new emergency department is modern
and highly efficient, with streamlined processes to
provide patients with a better experience,” says Brenda
Uhrynuk, Executive Director and Site Administrator
for NRGH. “It also provides separate public and
ambulance entrances, more space and privacy,
increased comfort for patients and their families and
specialized areas for those needing psychiatric care.”
The spacious new department is three times the
size of the previous ED. With its light-filled rooms,
numerous windows, vaulted ceilings, skylights and
courtyards, the department provides a calming setting
for patients and their families.
“This is a place of healing and we have created an
environment conducive to that,” says Suzanne Fox,
Director, Emergency Services and Trauma Care.
“Our health care workers want the very best for their
patients and this emergency department is an open

Design features that increase the level of privacy
will make patients feel more comfortable and also
enhance infection control. Instead of the usual
curtained treatment bays, patients will be treated
in cubicles fitted with purpose-built privacy glass.
There is a designated x-ray area within the ED as well
as electrocardiogram (ECG) and lab space so that
unit is staffed by multidisciplinary staff specializing in
mental health and addictions. This unit is a regional
centre and may take referrals from across the northern
and central island.
Physicians, nurses, clerks and other staff were closely
involved with the design of the new department.
“Staff played a big part in designing the new ED, right

diagnostic testing can begin quickly after a patient has
checked in. Also part of the new facility is a state-ofthe-art trauma room for patients who are the most
ill or injured as well as a decontamination room with
a separate entrance in the case of an emergency or
disaster that would require chemical decontamination.
An important addition to NRGH ED services
includes a Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) and a
Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PIC).
The PES is a specialized care unit within the ED
that provides treatment for patients with mental
health and/or addiction emergencies. Services
include assessment, short term crisis intervention and
stabilization, treatment planning and care for adults
in a timely manner in a respectful, non-judgmental
environment.
The PIC unit provides short-term in-patient
treatment and support for adult patients who are in
an acute phase of a serious mental illness. The six-bed

equipment in the rooms,” noted Uhrynuk.
Waiting areas are roomy and comfortable, finished
with warm colours inspired by the natural light
and greenery. Designed with the patient in mind,
there is seating appropriate for geriatric patients and
educational child play areas. The courtyard landscaping
is visible through the many interior windows, allowing
visitors and patients to enjoy the outdoors from inside.
As part of the ED’s unique design, boundaries
linking one area of the department to another are wide
and spacious, creating a sense of openness and calm.
NRGH’s previous ED was upgraded in 1991 to
accommodate 15,000 predicted patient visits. Now,
21 years later, the busiest emergency department
on Vancouver Island offers care and support to over
57,000 patient visits annually.

Partnerships in Caring
Hospital foundations play an important
role in supporting patient care on Vancouver Island,
as they do in care settings all across Canada. VIHA
works in partnership with twelve hospital foundations,
supporting community-based efforts to enhance health
care for island residents. Foundations are separate
entities with their own Boards that make an important
contribution to patients’ comfort and well-being.
Following is the first in our series of profiles of
Vancouver Island hospital foundations; we will be
featuring a cross-section in upcoming issues. At VIHA,
we recognize and support the amazing work they do
and thank the foundations and their donors for their
generous contributions.

MRI’s on the Move
Patients in Campbell River, the Comox
Valley, Port Alberni and Duncan will soon have easy
access to Mobile Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
Most patients in these areas will now be able to
obtain MRIs in their own communities rather than
travelling to larger centres. The MRI unit is installed
in a specially equipped trailer and parked on purposebuilt trailer pads. The unit is moved regularly between
communities—so the equipment travels to the patient
rather the patient travelling to the equipment.
“This will be the first system of its kind to be
installed in a trailer in North America,” said Dr. John
Mathieson, VIHA Medical Director of Medical Imaging.
“The image quality is absolutely superb, aiding in better
diagnosis and treatment of patients.”
Construction of the specially designed parking
pads is close to completion at the four sites. Once
operational (sometime in October) the mobile MRI will
be scheduled for one to two weeks in each community,
and then will be relocated to its next destination over a
weekend.
The MRI facility will provide approximately 3,800
MRI scans annually and will be operated by VIHA.

Living our Values
Our vision is excellent care – for everyone, everywhere, every time.
At VIHA our purpose is to provide superior health care – creating healthier, stronger communities
and a better quality of life for those we serve. Our values are to C.A.R.E:
Courage: to do the right thing—to change, innovate and grow
Aspire: to the highest degree of quality and safety
Respect: to value each individual and bring trust to every relationship
Empathy: to give the kind of care we would want for our loved ones
Here are just a few of the many stories about VIHA staff living their values:
• Shelley Galloway experienced VIHA’s
values in action when her three-year-old son Lucca broke
his arm. Her doctor was called away on an emergency
while she and Lucca were waiting to have his cast put
on. A doctor who was
seeing another patient
noticed them, and
asked what they were
waiting for. “He went
above and beyond my
expectations,” says
Galloway. “He looked
at the x-rays, and put
on the cast when no one else was available. He was gentle
and kind. I didn’t realize there were doctors who care so
much.”
• Denise Clarkson is a Medical Laboratory
Assistant at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Her
co-workers say she goes out of her way to ensure patients
are happy – and she has a magic touch with babies.
“Denise’s compassion and empathy with parents and new
babies is amazing. She wraps the baby in a warm blanket,
and warms the heel with a hot cloth so that the baby is
happy and asleep when she does the bloodwork. That
makes it so much easier for babies and anxious parents.”
• A handwritten letter was dropped off at
Lady Minto Hospital by a homeless man who had been
admitted with hypothermia and a lung infection. “…I
am writing this letter to express my heartfelt gratitude
for the treatment I experienced while in the hospital.
Everyone I dealt with treated me as if I really mattered
to them. They were friendly, respectful, very efficient
26

and professional. I cannot possibly thank you enough. I
believe that you saved my life. Bless you all.”
• When Dale and Martina Serrao were
admitted to Victoria General Hospital for the birth of
their daughter, they had no idea the positive impact
the actions of one nurse would have on them. On their
second day, after a long labour and complications,
RN Marian Plewman came on shift. Dale says she was
absolutely fantastic. “Not only did she answer all of our
questions and explain exactly what was happening and
why, she skipped her break to monitor my wife, and
stayed past the end of her shift to help with the delivery.
Having her in the room
was very calming, and I
cherish the moment when
she put my baby girl in
my hands. When she
came into our room while
my wife was recovering
with our beautiful daughter, my wife’s face exploded into
such a smile. We will remember her always.”

Patrick is a tall 10 year old boy with lovely dark hair.
He is described as a very handsome self-directed
young man who likes outings and riding his bike.
Patrick loves one-on-one attention, doing puzzles
and learning new things at school.
Patrick experienced a great deal of neglect early in his
life and has received significant support to assist
in his development. He will need a family that
understands his needs and continues to support him
as he grows. A two parent family would be the best
fit for Patrick. He would also love pets.

Richard Brown is an
architect and manager
of VIHA’s Design and
Construction Department
located at Royal Jubilee in
Victoria. It’s interesting to
learn that VIHA, a health
care organization, has architects on staff. In order to
meet the needs of the community, VIHA is building new
buildings, renovating existing facilities and installing
new pieces of major medical equipment. To do this it’s
important to have skilled professionals who are familiar
with the process of design and construction so that
this important work is completed successfully. Richard
is currently working on VIHA projects like the new
Emergency department in Nanaimo, the building of
new operating rooms at Saanich Peninsula Hospital,
renovations at Cowichan Lodge and the deconstruction
of old buildings on the Royal Jubilee Hospital site.
“I’m especially pleased with our design of the
Nanaimo Emergency Department,” says Richard. “The
light-filled rooms, green spaces and enhanced privacy
all come together to create a better experience for our
patients and our staff.”
In his spare time, Richard is an artist and painter. He
sketches and creates watercolours of his vacation travels,
producing a desk calendar of his work every year (highly
coveted by his colleagues). Richard also paints large
abstract paintings (see his work pictured behind him)
which have hung in local art shows as well as winning
prizes.
“My first childhood memory at the age of four is
painting and drawing,” notes Richard. “Becoming an
architect was a natural progression from holding that
first pencil.” Richard has been with VIHA for twelve
years.

Staying Healthy
This Fall & Winter
Vancouver Island winters are wonderful when you stay healthy and strong
Winter is coming to Vancouver
Island. While we may not
experience the cold and snow
of other parts of Canada, it can
still be a long, gray, wet season.
How do we stay healthy and
vital? Here are a few tips to
maintain optimal health:
Get Vaccinated
seniors 65 and older, people living
in residential care, Aboriginal
people, healthcare and essential
service workers, and children
and adults with certain medical
conditions, as well as to household
contacts of those listed above. Also,
a pneumonia vaccine is generally
recommended for all people 65
and older and those ages 5–64 who
have a chronic disease or illness.
Prevention is good medicine!
thoroughly and often and to make
sure your children and family
members do the same. That means
using soap and warm water, rubbing
your hands together under the
running water for 10–15 seconds,
making sure you get between your
fingers, then rinsing well. Avoiding
germs altogether is the best way to
deal with them.
Exercise
Wash Your Hands
Ask your doctor about getting the
flu vaccine and the pneumonia
vaccine. The flu vaccine is provided
free of charge to children aged
6–23 months, pregnant women,
The single best way to avoid getting

but there are health benefits from
any amount of exercise). If you
are an outdoor enthusiast, make
sure you dress appropriately for
the weather. Get out for a walk
whenever weather permits, or do
a few laps at your local mall or
indoor track. Look into a joining
a community recreation centre
for indoor fitness or think about
tryng new activities like swimming,
Zumba (Latin dance) or spin classes.
Take Vitamin D
Fewer sunny hours coupled with
less time spent outdoors means
we need to be aware of our
Vitamin D intake. Health Canada’s
Recommended Dietary Allowance
(RDA) for children and adults aged
9–70 for Vitamin D is 600 IU. This
is equivalent to consuming two
cups of milk (which is fortified with
Vitamin D). Adults over the age
of 50 are recommended to take a
Vitamin D supplement of 400 IU.
For a full listing of Health Canada’s
recommendations visit their website
at: www.hc-sc.gc.ca.
Sleep
Animals aren’t the only ones who
feel the need to hibernate in the
winter. It’s natural for humans
to crave more sleep more during
the long winter months, so this
is the season to work on getting
your optimal eight hours of sleep.
You’ll feel rested while helping your
immune system stay strong.
Stay Engaged
remote in one hand and a bowl of
popcorn in the other…but spending
too much time alone can lead to
feelings of isolation and depression.
Make sure you continue to socialize
and spend time with friends and
family or consider volunteering for
an organization that interests you.
Drive Carefully
Darker days and winter road
conditions mean that drivers need
to stay even more alert. Keep the
weather in mind and make sure your
car is in good working order (snow
tires, oil check, an emergency kit).
Also, when cycling or exercising
outdoors, be sure to wear reflective
gear to stay visible.

Enhanced supports keep seniors healthy at home
Machines beep. A nurse hurries along the hall. The bright
light from the hallway casts a long shadow on the wall.
Irene Cooksley didn’t plan on spending time lying
in a hospital bed recovering from a broken wrist. “It
happened about 11 o’clock at night,” says Irene. “I
tripped over my own feet in my own house. I rang the
alarm and I was taken to the hospital.”
She’s grateful for the care she’s received in hospital,
but she’s ready to get back to the comfort of her own
home. “They were very attentive to my needs and I
just really have to give them high praise for their care
for me,” she says. “I just don’t know why I had to stay
in the hospital such a long time with just a broken
wrist. I don’t know why I couldn’t have come home
sooner.”
It’s Here.

Hospitals are amazing places. Advances in
technology allow us to see activity inside the brain,
transplant organs, replace joints and perform complex
surgeries that barely leave a scar. It’s all done by caring
professionals who work in concert to ensure excellent
care for patients.
But when seniors face an extended stay in the
hospital, the unfamiliar surroundings can be lonely
and disorienting. In fact, studies consistently show
that each day an elderly patient spends in bed, their
levels of mobility and cognition decrease.
In recognition of this, as well as the fact that our
population is aging and our hospitals are increasingly
congested, we are looking at ways to enhance the
home health services we provide.

At VIHA we recognize that home is the best place
for seniors to recover from illness or injury, maintain
physical and cognitive health and manage chronic
conditions. And the comfort of one’s own home, with
the support of family and a health care team, is the
best place to make decisions about health care and
living arrangements.
There are risks in every environment, but at home
with appropriate supports, older adults have the best
chance of maintaining independence and enjoying
an optimal quality of life. Irene Cooksley misses her
regular routines. “I like to do Skype,” she says. “I
Skype my daughter in France. Plus, where I am is
quite close to the sidewalk, so we can get out, and
Tim Horton’s is just a block away and that’s a place we
often go to.” The health benefits of those opportunities
to stay mobile and maintain social connections are
invaluable.
VIHA’s Home and Community Care team and
physicians work with clients like Irene to create a care
plan that meets their unique needs so they are able to
be safe and healthy at home. A case manager takes care
of all the arrangements for home visits from nurses,
occupational and physiotherapists, social workers,
nutritionists and home support workers along with
community services like adult day programs and
support for caregivers.
When a person comes to a VIHA hospital, every
effort is made to ensure a care team is in place to
support them to go home on discharge. Clients like
Irene Cooksley are grateful for that.

Building for Today and the Future
New health care facilities
While people will always be key to the
delivery of high quality health care services, buildings
and equipment also play an important role in shaping
patients’ experience when they receive care. In addition
to the new Emergency Department at Nanaimo Regional
Hospital which opens in October and is featured
separately in this publication, there are a number of
other exciting health care facilities under development:
New Hospitals in Campbell River
and Comox Valley
A new hospital in Campbell River and a new hospital
in the Comox Valley will bring provide timely, accessible,
high quality care to residents of the North Island and
improve safety, efficiency and clinical outcomes for
patients, while also becoming places where physicians
and staff will want to work long term.
The new Campbell River and District General
Hospital will be built on the current site of the Campbell
River Hospital, replacing this aging facility. It will have
capacity for up to 95 beds—an increase from the current
70 beds. In addition, 30-40 new additional community
care beds will open in Campbell River before the new
hospital opens.
The new Comox Valley Hospital is located near Ryan
Road/Lerwick Avenue in Comox and has capacity for up
to 153 beds, replacing the 116-bed St. Joseph’s General
Hospital.
Following a public tendering process, construction
will begin Fall 2013 with both hospitals being ready for
patient care in 2017. Visit www.viha.ca for updates and
information on this exciting project.
42
A Healthier You
Oceanside Health Centre
The new Oceanside Health Centre will provide Urgent
Care 15 hours per day with no appointment needed.
It will also deliver integrated primary health care,
community care and other services to improve the health
and well-being and coordination of health care services
for residents of the Parksville/Qualicum area.
Scheduled to open June 2013, the Oceanside Health
Centre will reduce the need for residents to leave
their communities for emergency care and medical
appointments. Visit www.viha.ca for more information
on this innovative health centre.
Saanich Peninsula Hospital
New Operating Rooms
Three new operating rooms in a 690-square-metre
addition opened this month at Saanich Peninsula
Hospital, replacing outdated facilities. The new ORs
will not only ensure Peninsula residents have access to
state-of-the-art surgical care close to home, the new ORs
will enable Saanich Peninsula Hospital to meet future
patient care needs as part of the network of hospitals on
Southern Vancouver Island. A huge recognition to the
Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation and its donors
for making this project a reality.
Community Care Facilities
While it is recognized that ‘home is best’ for the
aging population, there will always be instances where
individuals are no longer able to remain safely in their
homes. To meet the increasingly complex health care
needs of an aging population, construction is underway
for a new 260-bed seniors’ facility on Carey Road in
Saanich. A tendering process is currently underway for a
new care facility – which will include licensed dementia
care – in Nanaimo.

Mental Health
Issues?
Talk to your family doctor
Mental health issues touch many families living
on Vancouver Island. In the past, these issues were
often ignored or spoken about in whispers. Today, the
stigma is lifting and people seeking help now have
options for treatment.
Many Vancouver Island family physicians have now
received additional training in adult mental health
issues, such as depression and anxiety disorders, and
are able to help patients right in their office. They are
also being trained in child and youth issues.
The core of this innovative adult treatment program
was developed by VIHA’s Dr. Rivian Weinerman and
her team. Working at VIHA’s Urgent Short Term
Assessment and Treatment Centre South Island, Dr.
Weinerman’s team identified that some patients had
mental health issues that, with the right training,
could be treated by their family doctor. “We believed
that by training physicians in diagnostic screening, and
cognitive behaviour skills, they could help patients in
their offices rather than sending them somewhere else
or just prescribing medication,” says Dr. Weinerman.
They created the Cognitive Behavioural Skills Manual.
With the support of the BC Medical Association
and their Practice Support Program, they partnered
with the Canadian Mental Health Association’s
Bounce Back program and the Antidepressant Skills
Workbook.
About one third of family physicians on Vancouver
Island have taken this training and of those surveyed,
98% were using the training in their practice.
“Patients love it. The incredibly positive feedback
I’ve had from patients tells me that this is worth
pursuing. It’s intriguing that such simple tools can go
so far in developing trust and towards patients having
a sense of being heard,” says Dr. Fiona Manning, a
physician at the Health Point Care Centre, Victoria,
BC.
“A province-wide evaluation of these physicians
highlighted that the program is working,” noted
Weinerman. “Patients felt more comfortable talking to
their doctors and physicians felt that it improved their
patient care, decreased their reliance on prescribing
antidepressants and that being able to help patients
deal with these issues increased their ability to return
to work and stay at work.”
If you or a family member is struggling with mental
health issues, start with your family doctor to discuss
treatment options.
