From the Driver’s Seat
I’d like to thank Mark Pendergrass and Larry Cockerham for jumping
in an helping out as volunteers at the 47th Annual Portland Roadster
Show (“PRS”). They took time to work multiple days to help get the
show ready, work security, and helped on move-out night. It was nice
to have them in my section (I was the MHRC doormaster of “A” North
rollup door) on move-out night, as we got things moving pretty well. It
can be chaos and it was nice to have guys I know and trust helping to
clear my section of vendors, cars and trailers.
I’d also like to thank clubmember Keith Canutt for pitching in and
helping out with my Brother’s PRS car display. When time is short
and you need it done, best to go to someone who has been there
before. Keith did a display case base for us on very short notice. My
brother and I owe you for that Keith! I now more fully understand the
trials and tribulations of Keith’s efforts for our Club’s/Club Member’s
displays at the PRS. It’s a lot of work to have a good looking display
and if we haven’t thanked Keith enough in the past, we should remember his past efforts. Keith is planning a Quest for
Quarterpounder Tour for Sat. 3/22 that we should support as a club.
More details forthcoming, but will have to be relayed via the club
website and by phone as we are at Newsletter deadline.
Speaking of the PRS, we are still missing a regular MHRC Rep. Paul
has represented us at the recent meetings, but we should be able to
get a regular MHRC Rep. James Boscole? Ray Clack? If you are
truly interested, please step up and volunteer. It really helps us have
better MHRC representation with a regular Rep. Isn’t Paul overworked as it is?

February Meeting Minutes
Minutes of the SAAC NW meeting 16 February 2003
Presidents Report
President Dan Jones brought the meeting to order at 6:15 P.M.
Dan gave a report on SAAC does Vegas, said the weather was nice, high 70’s low 80’s. The hotel
where they stayed was all right, better than the old Imperial Palace hotel/museum.
Allen Grant was there from the NW. Dan said that many of the old Shelby American employees were
present, brought many items to be auctioned off. Dan said that there were a lot of original items that
were auctioned off including a sign that was on the team garage at Lemans, only they spelled Shelby
with a “C” instead of an “S”, the mechanic saw it, got a screw driver and removed it and put in his tool
box. It sold for $250.00!
Dan said that there was an Eleanor clone prototype car on display. Dan said that it is a well built impressive looking car. They have 26 cars sold and are taking orders for more, they estimate that they will sell
200 cars total. At present they aren’t having any difficulty getting rust free originals to use as base cars
to make the clones.
Dan said that they are no longer selling Series 1 Cobras, they have shut down the assembly line, are
waiting to get some emissions results for 2003 before they can resume manufacturing.
Vice Presidents Report
Dave Lennartz said that he would go over the calendar of events later in the meeting, had nothing else
to report at this time.

Secretary’s Report
Paul Blanchard read the minutes of the 19 January 2003 meeting. Paul asked if there were any additions changes or corrections to the minutes as read. There weren’t any, the minutes stand as written.
Treasurer’s Report
Bob Parker gave the treasurer’s report, after all of our bills are paid we still have a good treasury to help
us fund important club functions for the year. Newsletter editor Brent Soo Hoo sold two ads for placement in the club newsletter, had the people make the checks out to SAAC NW. Bob discussed the
problems he has experienced with Pay Pal, some of the payments sent have yet to be received by our
club.
Newsletter Editor
Brent Soo Hoo said that he has a list of member cars that he is interested in featuring for our newsletter.
Brent will be getting in contact with the car owners, should have some good feature articles for upcoming issues. Brent went on to say that he has sold some ads to help pay for publishing the newsletter.

Track Steward’s Report
Mark Pendergrass along with the one and only Brian Bogdan attended the PIR users meeting,
learned that we have the option of having a track day on Easter Sunday. The consensus of opinion
among the members at tonight’s meeting was that we not have a track day on Easter Sunday. Dan
said that he had received a call from some people from Canada that wanted to know if they could
bring down their cars along with their friends. Dan told them that it was acceptable, we have
different run groups for different experience levels of driving, we would be glad to have them. The
first track date for 2003 is Friday July 25th.
Dave Lennartz talked about the possibility of having an autocross track day at South Sound
Speedway, a track that is about 10 miles North of Centralia Washington. Dave made a motion that
the Track committee be authorized to reserve a date at south Sound Speedway, bring it back to the
club at next months meeting. The motion was seconded, a vote was taken, motion passed.

Old Business
Our President Dan Jones wanted to discuss the issue of insurance from SAAC National. The
consensus of opinion was that the National Insurance was too expensive; our insurance needs
could be better served with local insurance for less money.
The next item to discuss was the list of upcoming events that the Shelby American Automobile
Club NW would like to participate in this year.
Dave Lennartz led the discussion, a list of member approved events will be printed in this newsletter.
It was decided that the club would purchase the two stalls normally reserved by Fred and Gayle
Gehring at the Portland Swap Meet in April. Club members as before will be able to bring in their
parts for sale, tagged with the price so that they may find a buyer coming to the club swap meet
space. There will be passes available for those who wish to help man the booth, shift times to be
determined at a later date. Interested? Give Mark Pendergrass or Larry Cockerham a call.

Purple Dream Cont. from pg. 14
We really have benefited from the wisdom in the Shelby group. Fred Gehring was the first
to come look at the car in the beginning, and we weren’t even members...yet. Jay
Carscallen’s car and knowledge were great references when it came to the console and the
placement of letters and badging. Ray and Wilbur spent several visits at Jay’s trying to
figure out how things were assembled. Del Proudfit even took part of his car apart for us!
Not to mention phone calls and discussions with Keith Canutt, Brian Bogden, Brent Soo
Hoo, Gary Kelly, Denny Aldridge, Bill Kubeck, and others.
Before the resto started we were at the April Swap Meet. Fred Gehring showed us a ‘68
Ford Electrical Shop Manual. “You’ll NEED this!” he said. He was right! Since most of
our wiring was still stock the color of the wires matched the book and helped us track
things. A lot of our parts for the restoration of the interior were purchased from Majestic
Mountain Classics in Gresham. Numerous items were gathered from DelPro, Rose City
Mustang, Mustangs Plus, Portland Swap Meet, and those fenders from Oklahoma Mustang. And of course, (Tony) Branda! We have also had good experiences finding specific
parts to finish things off on EBay.
We spent a lot of time on waiting lists. Almost five months for a new fiberglass hood.
Seems the manufacturer was busy making hoods for the “Eleanors” for some movie called
“Gone in 60 seconds.” Dash parts, fiberglass letter panel, door grill clips, just to name a
few. The console was a two year wait from Branda but we found one we restored from
EBay. The missing lower Y belt parts were really hard to find.
When we went through our file for the car, we found a list the former owner had made.
He thought it would take about $3,500 in parts plus paint to get the car going again. Boy,
was he wrong!!
Our advice if you want to restore your car?............. plan on spending WAY more money
than you think..........plan on spending WAY more time than you think.......... and plan on
appreciating it WAY more than you think!!
Now we know you are all wondering.......why the heck did they paint it such an unShelby
color. Well........the year that we purchased the car we saw five ‘68 Shelbys at Hot August Nights. They were ALL red. Our car was originally red. After HAN we decided that
we didn’t know what color the car would be but we DID know that it wouldn’t be RED.
Maybe Blue? Could it be our upbringing in the 60’s that prompted us to be so unconventional? For whatever reason we found ourselves shopping for colors at local car shows.
We saw lots of great blues but it was a drop dead gorgeous Purple ‘49 Merc that caught
our eye and the owner was willing to share his paint codes. Our body man, Wilbur, however, was less than thrilled. It happened to be a House of Kolors three stage paint and he
had never attempted that before. After a lot of homework and several practice pieces,
Wilbur presented us with our beautiful car. At the recent car show we happened to run
into the owner of the purple Merc who had shared his codes with us. He said he and his
wife thought the Shelby’s color looked awfully familiar! He was tickled and so are we.
15
Purple Dream Cont. from pg. 11
our doorstep that day!! When the car finally came home with new paint and wanting a
finished interior we thought......”We’ll have it on the road this summer!” PGE (Ray’s
work) had other ideas about free time and kept Ray extra busy on special projects that
kept Ray from his special project. The car spent another 12 months in our garage
waiting for time to become available.
For the next 10 months We spent a lot of hours “off and on” putting the interior back
together. We would get started only to find that we were missing something that had to
be found or purchased before we could go any further. We worked on the wiring first and
found that most all of it was unmolested and usable. It was a joy when we found one
light after another that would work. Getting the wiring for the door secured in the appropriately holes proved to be trying. After 90 minutes of frustration, Ann finally figured out
a simple solution using quilting thread and a long crochet hook to pop in one of the forward wire holders. The second door only took 5 minutes. Sure wish someone would
write a book on this stuff!!
After the wiring, we tackled the heater assembly and the new heater cables. Then we
started to fit the new dash pad that came with the car.....repro! After hours of frustration
we ordered a new one from Dashes Direct because they PROMISED it would fit and it
did....like a glove. After measuring the two, we found that the old repro was two inches
shorter. No wonder it wouldn’t stretch over the dash!
We had several friends who came over and helped us with items like carpet, door panels,
hood locks, and fiberglass interior pieces (which were a royal pain). We had that darn
dash pod in and out about 5 times before we had everything in right. We had little time
left to detail the engine and undercarriage for the February car show after spending so
much time on the interior. Needless to say it wasn’t perfect. Are you really ever truly
FINISHED?
Fortunately for us the 302 engine had been recently rebuilt (. 030" over) with roller
rockers. The carburetor was another story though. When the car was appraised, the
man said he was sure that wasn’t an original carb. He said the Autolite that was on it was
reportedly the best carb to have a fire with.......which we proved to be quite true. After
the car was painted and home, we were trying to get it started after it had sat for 6
months or so. Ray used a little gas from a yogurt container and darned if that carb didn’t
catch on fire. Ray’s instinct was to put it out with the rag in his hand. Unfortunately he
forgot that the shop rag was just a blue paper shop towel which promptly caught on fire.
Ray’s reaction was to jerk back which spilled gas on his arm, jeans, fender and various
spots on the garage floor catching those items on fire as well. The arm was the first he
rubbed out, and OH MY GOSH! My paint job!! Fortunately it wasn’t hot enough before
Ray swiped it off. After a lot of swiping and stomping the multiple fires were out, the
paint job was safe, but Ray’s arm was cleaned of its hair. Do we have that carb still on?
HECK NO!!!! We rebuilt the 4 barrel Holley that also came with the car!

and Eric talk about a shot for the 67 Shelby GT 500, Eric
shot’s and writes for Mustang and Ford magazine. Not to
leave out the east coast boy’s, Rick, Howard, Ken and
Vinny (teching the cars). There was plenty of bench racing
going on that afternoon! Cars and trailers from all over,
even Florida! Nice laid back day. Lisa and I missed the Live
Auction of Cobra Team memorabilia. Ask Dan and Judy
and Allen about the fun they had that night! Lisa’s dad’s
neighbor had invited us to dinner at their place and it
turned out to be a 4-course meal! It was a special Italian
meal and there were seven couples to enjoy all the food
and good company.
SAAC Does Vegas 7 (2003)
by Brian Bogden
SAAC Does Vegas 7! Plus 4,000 + miles in the middle of
winter! Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona,
Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon and back home
to Washington!
Back at the Christmas Dinner 2002, we were setting at a
table with Allen Grant and he had asked if anyone was
planing on going down for SAAC DV 7? Well, no, but what
if? The idea is planted and I start to plan and coax Lisa
into thinking about it. Then we hear that we will have some
time off do to the mill shutting down, and it will be the right
weekend! The plan is now coming together! Another memo
from the front office at work, now we will be off the week of
February 3 through the 10th! It is all coming together like it
was meant to be! Besides getting to see Lisa’s Dad, she
would like to visit her brother in Denver! Road Trip!
We leave on Thursday the 30th of January, at 6:20 am we
are loaded and heading off the hill! We hydroplane through
Oregon (remember that rainy day?). Then to brake out into
broken clouds at the boarder of California! Through
California, then over to Nevada and south to Las Vegas!
We pull into Lisa’s dads driveway at 11:02 p.m. Lisa
covered the Nevada highway in no time at all under the
veil of darkness as we entered the glowing lights of Las
Vegas. We could see the glow that night for 150 mile, no
kidding!
Get up early to clean the car, oh, what car did we take?
Well I talked with a veteran of the Vegas road trip team
Riggs member Jeff Riggs. He said it would be more fun
with the SVT Focus than the 98 V6 Mustang. Jeff was
right! The bright morning sun was almost blinding and the
car was drying as fast! Then I unloaded the rest of the
stuff, which included snow ski gear for Denver area
Rockies! Lisa’s dad could not believe how much stuff came
out of the Focus. Lisa and I headed out down to the
Headquarter Hotel that was the Boardwalk Hotel & Casino
on the strip. We made it and signed up for the event and
there is Allen Grant! Soon we see Dan Jones, then Eric
English (from WA. SAAC) spotted Lisa and I. We all visited
a while and talked about what was up for the night. Dan

Saturday, up by 7 am and head for Las Vegas Speedway. It
is very cool to drive through the entrance tunnel that goes
under the track following a Cobra with side pipes! We had
to roll the windows down for that. Time for goose bumps.
Yes, it feels just like any other track day just with a little
more icing. The Petty School is running this day and we all
need to move into one of the NASCAR Garages for the
Drivers meeting, those Petty cars are loud! We meet up
with Brent Rule and Don Odiorne (from Idaho) at the
meeting. Rick Kopec told the troops what was what and he
only had two flags - Red and Black! Wow, this was laid
back, so far. It did not take long and Lisa was lined up for
here first time on this 1.1-mile infield track. The SVT Focus
was looking a little out of place. But soon the true colors of
this little car would show as Lisa soon became at one with
her car. She was looking good out there as her dad and I
watch. She came back in just a little pumped up. The SVT
Focus could keep up in the corners and do some great
braking. But, there is always a “But”, Lisa said it needs a
Supercharger for that extra kick. You always need just a
little more right. We are in the second run group with Brent
with his weapon SVT Lighting and Don’s Rumble Bee SVT
Mustang Cobra. Eric and Dan where watching all the
action from the pits. Shelby made a drive through the pits
checking on all to make sure we all where having a good
safe time, or was he checking out the competition? Two
more run groups take to the track and now I get a turn at
the wheel of the Focus. I put myself at the end of the line of
cars and soon was on the infield coarse. Wow here we go!
Plus the Petty cars are roaring by in the opposite direction
from us. I kept looking over at them while driving NOT good
idea. I kept it straight, but felt out of shape for the first four

sizing formulas.
HP = (lbs./hr.) X 2.04
cc/min. = (lbs./hr.) X 10.356
eg. 550cc injector = 53.109 lbs./hr. injector
1.2 to 1.4 HP per inch naturally aspirated
eg. 331ci X 1.2 = 397.2 HP
1.5 to 2.5 HP per inch turbo/supercharged
eg. 331ci X 1.5 = 496.5 HP or X 2.5 = 827.5 HP
or five laps. It is strange to drift a front driver. But very FUN. I drove with the traction control on the
first time and off the second time. With it on you cannot hang it out as much. With it off you can hang
it out and even start to spin the front tires. We had a small oil leak (loose bolts - after visit to Ford
dealer) and decided to call it a day. Brent, Don, Lisa and I all had plenty of drive time and we needed
to drive our cars and truck home so we did not drive in the afternoon session. There is plenty of track
time and it is a fun road coarse. They had us going off the track as the next group was coming on,
and only two flags! It work and again very laid back. We headed back to Lisa’s dad’s place.
Quick Injector Sizing
For quick determination of injector size,
multiply flow rate in cc per minute by
the number of injectors. Divide this
number by 7. This will give the maximum hp possible at 85% duty cycle.
Example: 4 x 500cc = 2000. 2000
divided by 7 = 285 hp.
Another formula to figure out maximum
power per injector flow rate is:
Injector flow rate in pounds per hr. x the
number of injectors, divided by 0.55.

Sunday we missed out on the Road Rally Valley of Fire but it was a great drive from what Dan and
Judy reported. When you finished you got a canceled check from Shelby American from the 60’s. We
checked out Shelby shop and visited with Dan & Judy, Eric, Allen. Carroll Shelby was looking very
good and having fun with his fans and old employees. What a great fun to get away all because the
mill shut down.
We left Tuesday for Denver and we made it in one day. During the week, we decide to go to Boulder
and check out the Shelby American Collection. More on this later. Sunday we headed for home viva
Sun Valley and Monday back to Longview. Some snow was found but it was handled just like the
whole trip with sure adrenaline! I’m ready for another road trip are you Lisa?

When we first started the restoration on the car, finding better fenders was the first
challenge. The “Made in Taiwan” and the US repros were awful! They just didn’t fit or
line up. We even searched for a donor car for original fenders. Fortunately we found
NOS fenders in Oklahoma. When they were delivered to Wilbur, he was so excited he
called Ray at work to tell him that they “fit like a
glove!” Nothing fits better than NOS parts.
Even the NOS scuff plates fit better than repros.

There were times when Wilbur would call about
some frustrating moment in the restoration (like
when he cracked one of the headlight buckets or
when he dropped and chipped the letter panel)
and Ray thought the car would be left on
