SOUND THE TRUMPET Friday 24 June 19:00 & Sunday 26 June 15:00 Artists Wim Viljoen has had a long career at UP, having first been appointed as a part-time lecturer at the age of 25. He became a full professor in 2003 and was also the Head of the Department of Music from 2008 - 2015. He continues to lecture in organ and harpsichord and to act as supervisor for Master’s and Doctoral students in organ performance. The following degrees have been conferred upon him: BMus (UP), MMus (UCT) and PhD (Musicology) (UP). He also futhered his organ studies with the world-famous organist Marie-Claire Alain in Paris for a period of two years. During this period he won the Prix Mention d’Intérpretation at the Chartres International Organ Competition, and became the first South African to participate in the International Festival of Young Organists in Switzerland. His musicological interest is focused on the keyboard performance practice of the 16thth to 18th centuries, especially ornamentation, and he has published several articles on the subject. Several of his students at UP have won bursaries, including the UNISA Stephanus Zondagh Organ Scholarship, which have enabled them to pursue their studies in the USA, the Netherlands and France. One of these, Herman Jordaan, won the first prize at the prestigious St Albans International Organ Competition in 2003. As a concert organist he has performed nationally and internationally in the USA, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Germany and the Czech Republic. Highlights include a concert in the Westminster Abbey in London in 2006, and joining seven international organists in 2011 who performed the complete organ works of Jehan Alain at Wichita State University. He also participated in the inauguration of two important organs on the UP campus, that of the Aula and the UP Chapel. He has recorded 10 commercial and live CD’s, amongst others with his colleague violinist Zanta Hofmeyr. In 2013 the Huberte Rupert Prize for Classical Music was awarded to him by the South African Academy of Science and Art for his contribution to music in South Africa. He is also the organist of the Universiteitsoord Church in Hatfield. Isabelle van Rensburg se hele lewe het nog altyd rondom musiek gewentel. Haar musiekloopbaan begin met klavieronderrig in Klerksdorp op 8-jarige ouderdom. Na haar skoolloopbaan het sy haar in Pretoria gevestig en in 2004 ingeskryf vir die Graad BMus. Sy voltooi ook daarna haar Meesters Graad in Uitvoerende Kunste aan die Universiteit van Pretoria met orrel as hoofinstrument onder leiding van professor Wim Viljoen. Gedurende haar studie jare was sy die algehele wenner van die ATKV Muziq kompetisie en wenner van verskeie beurse onder andere algehele wenner van die Unisa Graad 8 Beurskompetisie en ‘n Stephanus Zondag Oorsese musiekstudiebeurs. Sy het ook haar Voordraerslisensiaat in orrel en haar Onderwyslisensiaat in klavier by Unisa met lof voltooi. Isabelle het al verskeie solo optredes gegee onder andere in Bloemfontein en Port Elizabeth. Isabelle het as pianis opgetree saam met die Chamber Orchestra of South Africa en die JSO. Tans is Isabelle besig met haar Doktors Graad in Uitvoerende Kunste ook onder leiding van professor Viljoen. Sy beklee ‘n orrelpos by NG Skuilkrans en ‘n onderwyspos by Hoërskool Pro Arte waar sy klavier en teorie klasse aanbied. Braam van Tonder begin op 14 jarige ouderdom met trompet en in 2014 word die M.Mus aan hom toegeken deur die UFS en ontvang ook die Arts Trust Academic Honorary Award in 2009 vir die beste student in praktiese musiek. In 2013 as kategorie wenner aangewys van UNISA se eerste Nasionale blaaskompetisie; in 2007 is hy gekies as naaswenner in die Lubner kompetisie; en was ook deel van die Nasionale Jeugorkes in 2009-2011. Braam is aangestel by AFFIES vir die onderrig van koperblasers en ensembles en speel tans as ad hoc speler in verskeie orkeste en ensembles in Gauteng.
