Projections suggest that the overall size of the new equipment market is set to eclipse the previous records of 2007 and reiterates the buoyancy in the NZ economy. The only sector to have shown some softening in recent weeks has been forestry industry which has caused the customary slowdown and speculation, but amidst this the confidence remains that export prices will recover this side of Christmas and provide the much needed boost to the industry. Against that backdrop, timing might not seem ideal for the introduction of Porter Equipments latest addition to its stable of new equipment - Madill forestry equipment. Porter Equipment will distribute and support the full range of Madill forestry equipment from log loaders to leveling feller bunchers and swing yarders. Despite the downturn in forestry, the industry has reacted very positively to the news of this product acquisition and enquiry for the product has been exceptional already. The first of the Madill units arrive on our shores in August and the customer base has indicated that these units will be in productive use not long after. On the back of successful bids for several preferred supply arrangements, Porter Hire is looking forward to further expanding and updating the fleet in the second half of this calendar year. A significant number of new units have been ordered to meet Porter Hires development program. This expansion and replacement program is not limited to the earthmoving equipment and some notable successes in the access equipment market will see this division grow its market share and geographical footprint. Also, Porter Cranes has made a significant addition to its offering by PORTERGROUP Head Office: 980 Te Rapa Road, Te Rapa, Hamilton 0800 650 600 www.portergroup.co.nz acquiring a new 120 tonne tracked unit. Abroad, our operations in Southern California are enjoying the positive economic environment which has enabled the Porter Group to explore various expansion and diversification opportunities. The outlook in the state is very encouraging and the growth of both our sales and rental activity is a reflection of this. Australia remains subdued due to the widespread economic slowdown but despite the fact, our sales, finance and rental operations continue to make positive market share gains. In a regressing market, market share growth will position us well for a positive outcome following the recovery. We trust that the second half of this year will remain strong to enable our many valued customers to make some significant progress in this positive environment. To keep fertiliser, which can sometimes occur naturally during the shipping up with demand and ensure the best quality products head out process. the door to the South Canterbury region, a new Sandvik QA331 screen has proven itself a vital part of the distribution process. further prior to distribution. When youre dealing with 5000-tonne The 8000-square-metre Balance Agri-Nutrients hub in Timaru is parcels of each of the many products that come through the hub, a hive of activity every day of the week, processing and distributing speed of processing is of the essence. A fert stores mix of products a large variety of products around the South Canterbury region. changes rapidly, so with all manner of high-siders, bath tub trailers To aid with both quality control and traffic congestion through the distribution centre, Ballances Timaru team recently took delivery and two-axle fertiliser trucks lining up outside, its no surprise Ballance expects its equipment to work hard. of a new Sandvik QA331 mobile screen. When I check in with Hub manager Jock Cockburn agrees that the screen is already project manager Miles Johnson, the Sandvik has only been on helping with the logistics of outputting a variety of products. site for a month, but it is already paying dividends. We havent been able to pre-screen material for the following day Its a great addition to the operation, he confirms. Its main task before now, but the Sandvik allows us to do that. In the springtime, is to pre-screen, or scalp screen fertiliser prior to dispatch. when we will be running a nightshift as well, thats going to help Were looking for both foreign matter, like bits of packaging material, stones, tree bark, as well as hard, compacted lumps of 3 The hard lumps get sent off to the hammer mill to be broken down no end with maintaining a consistent traffic flow through the hub. Of course, having that reassurance that big lumps of fert arent A collaborative effort Ballance Agri-Nutrients decision to purchase its Sandvik QA331 mobile screen was based on an intensive 24-month investigation which included the extended trialling of various screening methods - a learning process Sandvik distributor Porter Equipment was heavily involved in. Weve been Ballances primary wheel loader supplier for around four years now, so when the need for an aggregates screen arose, we wanted to adopt the same education and trial process weve used to ensure the companys wheel loader requirements The Hyundai HL770-9 loader is also a recent addition to the distribution centre are met, says Porter Group general manager sales and marketing, Darren Ralph. This is a high capital item for the company so they needed to know what went into their Timaru hub was fit-for-purpose. Right from the start, Porter Equipment worked with them in their research. We placed plant in the operation so Ballance could assess how the machine would work in their application. This was very much a collaborative process. making their way through to customers is also vital. All in all, the screen is already proving its worth and it has only been here a short time. The Sandvik screens product into these wheeled conveyor units With so much product required to be output through the screen and a product that can be so abrasive on machinery and hydraulic gear - Ballance looked to Sandvik distributor Porter Equipment to give it some peace of mind in the screens protection and upkeep. Porter Equipment has given us substantial support, says Johnson. It has a comprehensive service offering out of its Ashburton branch, so we are well looked after. In fact, having Porters backup behind the Sandvik name was an anchor point in the decision to go with the brand in the first place. Because of the nature of the material were shifting through the screen, Porter Equipment supports us with a monthly preventative maintenance program. Regular maintenance is key simply due to the detrimental effect fertiliser can have on running gear. The Sandvik is the first screen Ballance has utilised within the Timaru hub Additionally sheet metal and hydraulics on the QA331 are protected by a number of preventative materials, including comprehensive Nylex protective coating coverage, as well as Denso tape and Lanoguard around hydraulic lines. Johnson tells me the screen spends around 80 percent of the day processing within the walls of the Timaru hub. So why did Balance opt for a tracked screen? At first it might seem an odd decision, but despite the machine never leaving the walls of the distribution centre, we still need the flexibility of a moveable screen. The hub is 66 metres wide by 123 metres long. Inside we have The Hyundai HL770-9 loader features what the company calls the Ballance Spec, including full Nylex protective coating and front hub wheels covers 4 a number of divided bins that feature any combination of product coming through. We need to be able to move the screen between the bins. We also lease the bulk store, so we didnt want to have any plant within the building that would need to be semi-permanently affixed to the floor, says Johnson. The Sandvik QA331 is a mid-range sized machine, but with a large screening area that means production rates can remain high. The screen design is of the banana screen style, meaning it can incline up to six degrees, keeping material on the screen box for longer which results in cleaner, higher quality product - a necessity for Ballance. Designed with low running costs in mind, through better fuel efficiency from its 75kW (100hp) engine, the QA331 is also designed from the outset to offer uniquely high amplitude and speed with an adjustable throw, ranging between 5mm and 8mm. Porter Equipment can easily re-spec the screen to deal with certain products, a process that takes the distributors tech team a couple of hours. But as Johnson tells me, that will only need to happen a couple of times a year. Still, when it does need to happen, its good to know that Porter Equipment will manage that for us from whoa to go. At Ballance, we have a philosophy of continual improvement, concludes Johnson. I think the addition of the Sandvik screen to our The screen features Nylex coating and Denso tape to help keep it in good shape operation certainly underlines that. With the main boom standing at a towering 70 metres and the fly jib at 21 metres, this crane will be an asset to the already strong Porter Cranes fleet of 11 machines. The ease of erecting and breaking down the Manitowoc makes it an ideal unit for meeting confined space requirements expected on inner city projects. It is currently being put through its paces on site for Construct Ltd at 800 Victoria Street where they are in the middle of a project to construct a new gym. The machine is likely to be in high demand and will shortly be on route to New Plymouth where it will be required for the Hobson Hotel construction project being undertaken by Foster Construction where it will be an integral part of the works duration of eight months. Some of the key features of the machine that will make it an asset to any project include its retractable crawlers that can be extended and retracted for better jobsite manoeuverability. The self-erecting counterweight eliminates the need for an assist crane, and also allows for reduced counterweight chart operation. Porter Cranes Manager, Stuart Rowling commented, A machine such as the Manitowoc will increase our capability to tender for and secure long term projects and will also be used in the development of the new Porter Group headquarters in Te Kowhai. 9 NATIONAL Porter Hire New Zealand continues to grow and expand with the products to the fleet.
