look
out, boys and girls! I'm climbing
up on my soapbox again. And what is
it this time, you ask? The gay rights agenda? EI Nino? Somebody wearing white
before Easter? Or is it just that time of
month? Well, they're all excellent guesses,
but no. The spark behind this particular
outburst is the opening of the Canadian
film Lilies. Now let me say up front that I
consider Lilies to be one of the most sensitively directed, beautifully acted and gorgeously photographed movies I've seen in
some time. (And yes, I've seen Titanic.
Give it a rest.)
So what's the problem? The problem,
quite simply, is that it was made in Canada.
Now I have nothing against Canada, Jim
Carrey notwithstanding. What frosts me is
that this film wasn't made here in the good
old US of A. I mean, think for a minute.
Name four or five good gay-themed
movies - Alive & Kicking, Beautiful Thing,
Different for Girls, The Crying Game - all
British-made. Ma Vie en Rose, La Cage
aux Folies - French. The Adventures of
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - Australian, for heaven's sake! What do we
get? To Wong Foo, with Wesley Snipes,
yet. In & Out - cute. The Birdcage insulting! Love! Valour! Compassion! Did
anybody believe Jason Alexander for one
minute as a screaming queen?
The sad fact is, this country isn't ready
for an honest, upfront gay or lesbian film,
To make it palatable to an American audience, there has to be a gimmick - most
often a notoriously straight actor in drag.
That's funny, A genuine gay character in
L
PAGE 14
drag? That's threatening, I don't think there
has been a realistic gay-themed movie
made in the U,S. since The Boys in the
Band. And before you jump on the PC
bandwagon, I know - the Boys were
pathetic, self-loathing, neurotic, unhappy
homosexuals, but they were real. Just
because we like to think that things have
changed
doesn't
mean they never
happened.
And that brings me to my next point. A
member of the mainstream press in Houston (who shall remain nameless) clubbed
Jason Cadieux [r] and Danny Gilmore star as the young
Simon and Vallier in Lilies,
Lilies as not worth the time or money, His
primary gripe, it seems, was that it was just
another "love that dare not speak its name"
movie; that it dared to take us back to a
time when that was true. Well, of course it
does. That's the point. It's our history, and
it happened. For that matter, it still happens, no matter how enlightened we like to
think we've become. The same asinine
argument could be made against Schindler's List or Amistad. The realistic portrayal
of gay men and lesbians in film, in any
country, is new. Thirty years, tops. It's been
nearly a hundred' years since audiences
gasped at the five-minute epic The Kiss,
which featured the affectionate osculatory

antics of a (not very attractive) man and a
woman locked in amorous embrace. Just
getting equal time will take us well into the
next millennium.
Lilies, a film by John Greyson, does a lot
toward getting us there. From a play by
Michel Marc Bouchard, originally written in
French, Lilies tells the story of three young
boys involved in a love triangle in the
provincial Canada of 1912. The affair ends
tragically, and is told in flashback from the
perspective of one of the boys, Simon,
now (1952) in prison. Simon stages a play,
with the other inmates playing all the characters, male and female, who took part in
the story. The film has an intensely theatrical quality. The audience is asked to
suspend its disbelief again and again as
the story goes from 1952 to 1912 and
back, again and again, with the same prisoners playing the parts in both times. I
found this device a little confusing at first,
then exciting and stimulating as the story
progressed.
The young Simon is played by Jason
Cadieux, as heart-stoppingly beautiful as
anyone you'd want to see. (Look in the dictionary under "eyelashes," and you may
find his picture.) Danny Gilmore plays Vallier, Simon's friend and lover, with all the
passionate intensity of young love. Brent
Carver, Tony Award winner for Kiss of the
Spider Woman, plays The Countess, Vallier's haunted mother. The supporting cast
is superb, playing the women's roles as
Shakespeare's
company
might have
played them - for truth, never camp.
Bottom line: this is a movie with a lot of
levels. You may love it for some, hate it for
others, but I think it'll make an impact, and
it certainly deserves a showing.

How to Commit Murder with

guson, who had been 17 at the time of the
crime, would be tried as a juvenile and
face life in prison at most. Paul was 22; he
could be sentenced to death. So Tom subsequently confessed to the crime. However, both brothers were convicted of firstdegree murder and each was sentenced to
life in prison. But that's not the end of the
story, for "life in prison" doesn't necessarily
mean life in prison.
n the early 1950s, One Magazine reported on the trial of a youth charged
with murder. Defense attorneys alleged
that the victim was gay and had made an
indecent proposal, thereby justifying the
violence. To substantiate the allegation
that the murdered man was gay, the
defense called his maid to the stand. She
testified that her employer had slept on
pastel-colored sheets! Well, what other
proof was needed? The verdict: five years
probation.
I
The Trial of the Victim
Similar was the trial of Ramon Novarro.
Sex and violence make good newspaper
copy. And a gay sexual advance makes for
the justification of murder. Throw in a faded
movie idol and a down-and-out hustler,
and the copy becomes even better.
For seven weeks, the reports of the
Ramon Novarro murder trial made sensational headlines and sordid reading. But
the trial had more to do with the victim than
with the murderers. The defense made
sure that Novarro's homosexuality and his
frequent use of hustlers were picked over
in lurid detail. The actor's procurers were
even called to the stand to rehash the hustling process. Yet a guilty verdict seemed
likely.
At first the brothers blamed each other,
a good defense strategy. But Tom FerTWT MARCH 27 - APRIL 2 1998
The trial for the killers of Ramon Novarro [above] came to
focus on the victim's sexual orientation rather than on the
perpetrators.
The Rehabilitation of a Murderer
The brothers were separated and Tom
soon escaped from prison while outside on
a work-release program.
Paul's story was different. He was an
angry young man when he entered San
Quentin in 1969. At first a recluse, he
began making good use of his time by
enrolling in a local college for prisoners

where he took classes in creative writing.
In time, his writing became more prolific
and he started getting published. He won
first place in a national fiction-writing contest conducted by the prestigious PEN.
(Poets, Essayists and Novelists) magazine. Graduating as a straight-A student,
he began teaching other prisoners to write.
Paul's work at stilling racial violence,
first at San Quentin and then at the Jamestown Conservation Camp, earned him
praise from wardens, inmates and civic

groups alike. He did market research for a
Pennsylvania coal firm, which was so
impressed with his work that they offered
to hire him once he was released from
prison.
While incarcerated, Paul had time to
think about his crime. "When I was lashing
out at Mr. Novarro, I really was lashing out
at the gay feeling within myself. I'm responsible for his death, I know. But I think
I'm a different person now. What more can
I do? How much more rehabilitated can I
get?"
The Assistant Deputy Director of the
California
Department
of Corrections
agreed and went so far as to call Ferguson
a "model prisoner." The Modesto-area
Jaycees recognized his self-improvement
by giving him a Distinguished Service
Award and naming him Outstanding Young
Man of the Year.
The California Adult Authority didn't see
it that way, though, when Ferguson came
up for parole, and gave him only 30 days
off the 18 months he had yet to serve. In
total, he spent a little over ten years in
prison for the murder of gay silent-screen
star Ramon Novarro, Mr. Ben Hur.
Perhaps Paul Ferguson had earned his
release. He was remorseful and no longer
a threat to society. But still unanswered is
that age-old question, What is prison for,
punishment or rehabilitation? His victim is
still dead.

t'sbeen seven years since we were last
blessed with an Aretha Franklin album, but it's been well worth the wait as
the numero una sister of soul stakes her
claim to the nineties with A Rose Is Still a
Rose. The title track, which is her latest
single, was produced by the Fugees'
Lauryn Hill, who also belts out the fiery
hook borrowed from Edie Brickell's "What I
Am." Franklin gravitates from her old semidogmatic '80s sound to a newer audience
by collaborating with hip-hop contemporaries Sean "Puffy"
Combs, Jermain
Dupri and Dallas Austin for ditties like
"Every Lil' Bit Hurts," "I'll Dip" and "Never
Leave You Again." Sister carries on in a
"Babyface-ish" fashion with "In Case You
Forgot" and "In the Morning," and then
takes it back to basics with a sound a bit
more electronic and freestyle-tipped on
"The Woman." But regardless of the producers Aretha has worked with on this
album, it's obvious that it's her show, and
her best album in two decades. Clearly her
quitting smoking in '81 has been a good
thing - she sounds marvelous! ...
How about that new Moloko single?
Sorry, but this is a group that really has it
all going on. Last year was a breakout year
for them in many regards. They already
have a new album out in the UK and it's
obviouS that they're here for the long haul.
Their latest single is "Day for Night," and
while some purists may argue that the
clever trance-house mixes by Doc Martin,
Mark Bell, Quartermast and Jahkey B
sell out the original, I must beg to differ. The
DoC Martin and Mark Bell versions, faring
above the rest, are really accessible, combining a nice dose of electronica and cute
keyboard work over the flurrying vocals.
(For those who don't already know, Mark
Sell is the brains behind (M People.) ...

Link Between Lost & Found
It seems as though everyone is all about
the Natalie Imbruglia album these days. It
sold over 70,000 units on its first week and
the first single to be released, ''Torn,'' is a
huge hit all over Europe and garnering
MTV and radio play here in the U.S. This
album is really worth your coins, hons. One
interesting item about "Torn": If you'll remember back to last summer, we told you
about a group on Island called Ednaswap
and their album Wacko Magneto. Im-
bruglia's version of "Torn" is actually one of
three covers of the Ednaswap original. The
others were done by Danish singer !-is
Sorenson and the Norway-based American Trine Rein. Not to take anything away
from Natalie ... we just wanted you to know.
If you're into the trippy stuff like Roni
Size, then his remix of the Sarah McLachlan track "Sweet Surrender" is absolutely
essential. Size pretty much dumps Sarah's
vocals, but the drum & bass/break beat
works nicely with what's left. Even better
than Roni's mix is the Uberzone mix. All
electrified up and leaving the vocals intact,
this is surely the mix to go for. Very cute!. ..
Now here's a hit! Popular Records is
proud to announce the new single from
Canadian Pop sensation Joee. His first
U.S. single, "Angel," is currently being
worked to radio with club remixes on the
way from OJ Juanito and the team of
Denny Tsettos and Anthony Acid. The
song is actually sort of melancholy; it was
written for a cousin of Joee's who was
killed in a car accident in 1996. Though it's
a dance single, it was originally a ballad.
''The slow version of the song was too sad,
like reliving the whole event. I thought I
should more uplifting", Joee says. All of the
mixes on the CD single are superb - a
pure NRG mix, progressive NRG, A West
Coast and the ballad, which will work well
for adult contemporary stations. Be on the
lookout! ...
And that's dance music THIS WEEK IN
TEXAS.

!ouston's Diana Foundation is getting
ready to pull a few sharp arrows out
of its quiver and hunt down some of its own
members who are ripe for the roasting.
This weekend at The Four Seasons HotelHouston, members of the long-time service organization pull out the stops and
throw their biggest bash of the year. In a
formal event that even the Houston Chronicle's society column takes note of, these
100 men and their friends will fete state
Rep. Debra Danburg for her outstanding
service to the community. At the same
time, these guys are going to do what they
do best: raise money for those in our community who've otherwise been overlooked.
The Diana Foundation is a 45-year-old
organization of gay men in the Houston
area who are dedicated to seeking out the
need in our community, and "where we see
need, stepping up to the plate to assist,"
says Tom Mays, president of the group.
This year Diana is lending a hand to The
Assistance Fund in Houston. The Fund is
an organization aimed at helping those
struck by the AIDS epidemic by deferring
the cost of prescription drugs and covering
the health insurance premiums for clients.
Mays has arranged a variety of strategies
designed to bring in the bucks for what
Diana sees as a worthy recipient.
At the full seated dinner this Saturday,
March 28, members and guests will be
entertained by a show that director Bill
Poplin promises will excite. Performances

which to build the evening. The dinner is
not the only way the group is raising funds
for The Assistance Fund, though. Diana

of a living room party, way back in 1953 .
While watching the Oscars, the inventive

DearTWT:
I have to preface this letter by saying that I
am relatively new to the Austin community
(although I have been living in Texas almost
as long as dirt). That said, I can say what a
great pleasure it was to find so many people
willing to help me with my first benefit here.
On Saturday, Feb. 21, the Midtowne Spa

make it come together. Therefore, I would
like to gratefully acknowledge the support of
the following people, who helped pull this
together and helped us raise $580 for ASA.
Thanks to THIS WEEK IN TEXAS, the Austin

the Rainbow Cattle Company, Tapelenders
Video, Zymurgy Clothing, Bob Darling, Mike
Zappas and all the people who came out that
night to cheer on the dancers and help raise

also held in Dallas and Houston, and my
thanks go out to the sponsors there as well. I
also have to give a nod of appreciation to the
dancers who performed that night, including
our winners, Sly and Christian. An outstanding job was done by all.
In conclusion, I am glad to know I have
moved to a community that cares. We hope
to see all of you visit us during Splash 1998!

Help Toast Don Gill
Dear TWT:
Steven's House wants to publicly thank
Don Gill Productions for bringing the community together to celebrate Night in Black
Leather. We are most grateful to Don for
choosing Steven's House as the designated
charity and for the generous response of
those who attended. We also wish to acclaim
the many sponsors and underwriters and
guests from Houston as well as around the
country who made this, the fourth annual
celebration, the best thus far. It was an
incredible weekend and a great chance to
bring the many facets and organizations of
the Houston gay community together to celebrate as well as help those less fortunate.
Friday evening was a deliciously large
buffet, with many of the organizations of our
community each supplying the food. This
PAGE 53
was followed by a high-energy show by Carmen del Aio. Saturday night was a wonderful
mixture of leather, drag, fantasy, live song,
celebrities and organizations all performing
together to give the audience a show to
remember. And, as usual, the community in
attendance as well as those participating
from outside Houston raised nearly ten thousand seven hundred dollars (final count still
pending). Steven's House is most grateful.
We are working very hard to retire our debt;
however, we must still live day to day and
replace materials donated over four years
ago at our inception - for example, the
dryer that blew as we kicked off Friday night.
As you know, Steven's House offers its
services free and to both genders. We are
able to do that because of the continued
support of this community and special friends
and folks like Don Gill. His gift of bringing us
together and reminding us we are all
brothers and sisters and must be there for
each other is a blessing to us all. I invite you
to join me at the roast and toast for Don Gill
on May 6 at 8 p.m. at the BAB. Let's let him
know we appreciate his hard work with the
PWA Holiday Charities and his commitment
to the community.
The Steven's House family is most appreciative of the generosity of all the supporters
and entertainers and of the coordination and
direction of Don Gill in providing Houston
with the fourth annual Night in Black Leather.
Thank you one and all.

Great View, Benefit
Dear TWT:
Thanks to all who participated, either by
strutting their hot stuff or through financial
support, in last month's Feast of Temptation
progressive strip dinner at Aiva's. The event
raised over $1 ,000 for the Gay Men's Chorus
of Houston. As the five-course dinner progressed, the Manwatch wait staff exposed
more and more flesh with each return visit to
the dining tables. As you can imagine,
dessert was excellent! I think it is fair to say
that all who participated enjoyed the exceptional food, first-class service and great view!

rodeo. Wait until the 20th, cowpoke.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Monsters in
your closet call the shots in early April because of retro Mercury. This means that
your imagination conjures up scenarios that
may never come to be or are overdramatized, to say the least. This is no time to
cringe in your closet, gay Bull; it's time to
put your best hoof forward and trot out. It
becomes clearer after the 20th that the
timing was simply fine.
GEMI~I (May 22 - June 21) Even gregarious
gay Twins may suddenly question their ability to schmooze during April'S Mercury retrograde. At least until the 20th, carefully
examine the way in which you treat pals
lest there be misunderstandings over intent. Later in the month, the conversational
cloud clears and you easily become the
spark of the social circuit once again.
CA~CER(June 22 - July 23) It's a rocky road
to corporate Olympus as retro Mercury
tosses a few detours along the way. Proud
Crabs deserve a chance at stardom, but
give yourself ample planning time. After the
20th you'll be in a better frame of mind to
finalize plans for a coup d'etat. By then,
however, will the spark still be there to do
the deed? Feisty Mars channels desires
toward more social outlets.
LEO (July 24 - Aug. 23) Itchy paws are
scratched with a fabulous vacation this
April, but it may require extra planning. Gay
Lions feel the impact of retro Mercury
when guesthouse reservations in Key West
are switched to a Holiday Inn in Omaha
that's already hosting a Friars' convention. It
just ain't the same. All is salvaged with a reconfirmation and carry-ons. Escape before
the 14th, when Mars heats up your career.
VIRGO (Aug. 24 - Sept. 23) Uttering words
of lust in some megahunk's ear doesn't
have the intended effect in early April with
retro Mercury. Communication is misinterpreted or ignored. Rather than fold your
tent and compete with wallpaper, proud
Virgins must make a concerted effort to do
rather than say. Zesty Mars demands that
actions speak louder and prouder than
words for the month.
LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) In strong partnerships, words need not be spoken.
However, for queer Libras who are either in
the throes of an unstable relationship or
who are still on the prowl, retro Mercury

orks like a cosmic landmine. Don't quible over trifles now, the cost is too high.
nstead, let water keep flowing under the
ridge and allow your hands to do the
alking.
CORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) No matter
OW hard you try, the job will never seem
o get done in early April. Instructions are
ot followed or the end results are all
rons- Take heart, queer score, retro
ercury will wend its course and dissipate
fter the 20th. In the meantime, take a coule of coffee breaks and leave it to randy
ars to put a little mid-month zipadee in
our doodah.
,AGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 - Dec. 22) Proud
rchers find themselves artistically stymied
or a good part of April when retro Mercury
hrows a wrench into your most creative
rojects. Forget about planning something
tupendousi settle for something stupid
!Untilafter the 20th. By then Mars adds a bit
f oomph to your comrnunlcetions, ideas
ot only germinate, they explode on the
cene. So get the word out!
APRleORt-I (Dec. 23 - Jan. 20) The best

oesn't mean that you have to kowtow to
he straight and narrow, far from it. Queer

QUARIUS (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Mouthy
queerians should become reticent during
he Mercury retrograde, when things you
ay can be grossly misconstrued and blown
ut of proportion.
Strong commentary
hould be shelved until after the 20th.
therwise, you may find yourself hoisted
n your own petard. Please be sure to
ear clean petards in case you meet somene special.
ISeES (Feb. 20 - March 20) A fool and

SUPPORT URGED FOR
SEXUAL ORIENTATION,
GENDER IDENTITY
ISSUES SECTION IN
TEXAS STATE BAR
BAHR of Houston Seeking 200
Signatures by Next Wednesday
To Present Petition at
Board Meeting in Austin April 17.
TEXAS - Lawyers around the state are
being urged to support the latest attempt to
establish a section of the State Bar of
Texas that would focus on sexual orientation and sexual identity issues. A Houston
group is spearheading an effort to gather
200 signatures by next Wednesday for a
petition supporting the section that will be
presented at the next meeting of the Bar's
board of directors, on April 17 in Austin.
A similar earlier effort, which succeeded
in gathering the necessary 50 signatures in
support of setting up a Gay and Lesbian
Issues Section, was voted down by the Bar
in late 1996 - reportedly the first time the
group's board has ever rejected the creation of such a subgroup. National and
local legal publications criticized the Texas
State Bar's decision, and in the aftermath
of the publicity, the Bar set up an Ad Hoc
Section Study Committee to review the
parameters for section formation, continuation and oversight.
Last December, the committee issued
recommendations for the establishment of
new sections which set up even tougher
roadblocks. Texas lawyers interested in
forming a new section are now required to
certify that at least 200 lawyers will join the
proposed section and pay the proposed
dues. In addition, any new section approved by the board of directors is subject
to a five-year probationary review period.
The Bar Association for Human Rights
of Greater Houston, Inc., a Texas nonprofit
organization, has been working to drum up
interest in creating the new subgroup,
which this time around is called the Sexual
Orientation
and Gender Identification
Issues Section. As of last week, BAHR
said it had gotten fewer than 150 signatures in support of the new section. Texas
attorneys who are interested in signing the
petition should contact Anne Pike at (713)
PAGE 68
758-2411. Signatures must be submitted
by next Wednesday, April 1.
BAHR said that many of its members
planned to attend the meeting in Austin,
and encouraged other like-minded attorneys and law students to take part. For
more information on attending, contact
Mitchell Katine at (713)981-9595.
CALIFORNIA SUPREME
COURT SAYS THAT
BOY SCOUTS CAN
KEEP GAYS OUT
Decision Comes Less Than
A Month After New Jersey Court
Rules Against Exclusion.
LOS ANGELES - Advocates of equal
rights for gay people lost one with a ruling
on Monday by California's Supreme Court
that says the Boy Scouts of America may
continue to ban participation by gay men
and boys. The decision came less than a
month after a ruling by an appellate court
in New Jersey against the organization's
policy of excluding members on the basis
of their sexual orientation.
The Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. was co-counsel in the
California case, Curran v. Mount Diablo
Council of the Boy Scouts of America,
which was filed in 1981. Jon W. Davidson,
supervising attorney for the Lambda Western Regional Office in Los Angeles, argued
the case in early January on behalf of the
ACLU Foundation of Southern California,
which was lead counsel.
"Although today's decision applies only
to California law, it is a shame that even
one state tolerates blatant discrimination
by an important American institution,"
Davidson said Monday in a statement
TWT MARCH 27 - APRIL 2 1998
issued by Lambda.
"'A Scout is prejudiced' should not be a
thirteenth point of the Scout law," Davidson
said.
The ruling on Curran brought an end to
that case, since California's Supreme
Court is the final arbiter in cases involving
that state's laws and there is no federal law
which would provide grounds for further
appeal.
Curran was the oldest pending challenge to the BSA's exclusion of gay men
and boys. The case asserted that the BSA
ban on all "known or avowed homosexuals" violates California's Unruh Civil Rights
Act, which prohibits discrimination by business establishments in the state. The ruling issued Monday said the Boy Scouts of
America organization is not a business
establishment subject to that law and can
therefore discriminate at will.
"We are very disappointed that the California court failed to see that California's
law prohibits discrimination by organizations like the Boy Scouts of America," said
Evan Wolfson, senior staff attorney for
Lambda, which won the March 2 decision
in New Jersey. "The New Jersey court got
it right - members do not join the Scouts
to be part of an anti-gay organization; discrimination violates what scouting itself
stands for. We are hopeful that cases continuing across the country will ultimately
topple BSA's anti-gay policy."
In another ruling issued Monday in a
similar case, California's high court said
the Boy Scouts could also deny membership to those who refuse to recite an oath
to God required of all members of the
organization.

Texas AIDS Network Coordinating
Lone Star Participation in
'Hope Is Not Victory!'
U.S. - Taking as its theme "Hope Is Not
Victory!," the seventh annual AIDSwatch
will be held in Washington, DC, May 3-5.
AIDSwatch, the largest national HIV/AIDS
constituent lobbying event in the United
TWT MARCH 27 - APRIL 2 1998
States, works to focus on congressional
attention on AIDS funding for prevention,
medications, research, housing and social
services. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with their elected officials
and talk to them about HIV-related issues
of concern to constituents.
This year's lobbying effort is considered
to be especially important in that recent
medical progress against the disease has
lulled legislators and much of the public
into believing that the AIDS crisis is over.
The reality is that, although overall death
rates are declining, infection rates are not.
In addition, many people who contract the
virus still lack access to medications.
Coordinating AIDSwatch98 participation
from Texas is the Texas AIDS Network. In
order to assist participants in their lobbying
efforts, a half-day, in-depth briefing on
the Fiscal Year 1999 federal budget and
HIV/AIDS policy issues will be held on
Sunday, May 3, with participants meeting
with legislators or their aides the following
two days.
"It becomes essential in 1998 that our
representatives in Congress understand
that there continues to be a dire need for
increased funding and a strong commitment to federal HIV/AIDS programs for
prevention, care and treatment, research
and housing," said Dr. Carolyn Parker,
Executive Director of the Network. "We
have been given hope, but we are nowhere near victory in our fight against this
epidemic."
Participation in AIDSwatch98 is free,
although travel expenses are the responsibility of participants. A few scholarships are
available for constituents from key legislative districts. Community housing will also
be available for participants who cannot
afford hotels. TAN will help participants
from Texas with pre-registration and in
meeting with elected officials.
"With the fourth-highest rate of HIV
infection in the United States, Texas must
be seen and heard at the national level,"
Parker said. "It's now a Texas tradition to
visit every single Texan in Congress during
AIDSwatch, but we need as many Texans
as possible to help us do that."
To pre-register for AIDSwatch98, contact Jean-Michel Brevelle at the National
Association of People With AIDS at (202)
898-0414 or the Texas AIDS Network at
(512)447-8887. Pre-registration forms are
also available on the Internet at http://www.

Charlie's has all sorts of fun waiting for
you. The weekly show lineup includes
weeks. BeBe Gunn is the reining titleholder, and she said we can have the
crown back "when we peel it off her cold
dead scalp"! So it looks like we're in for a
fight, first to win the crown and then to
actually get hold of it!. ..
The Edge is in the middle of the
crossroads. Now there's a directional
puzzle for you! The middle is a good place
to be since they get a gay/lesbian/straight
crowd. Where else can you go watch guys
try to pick up girls who are already with
girls but then go home with guys instead.
(And there's a word puzzle for you.) Kevin
deals blackjack on the weekends and is
quite the card shark. If you've got a good
poker face, you'll be able to break the
bank. We all know the value of a good
bluff. As for good faces,
this cutie [left] is one of
our favorites. His name
is Bobby and you'll find
him working his
incredibly young, firm
tail off behind the bar
evenings and during
Friday happy hours. Stop
in and see how things

Rainbow Cattle Co. is always a place
with a party - that is, if you like cowboys,
dancing with cowboys, eating tacos or
steaks with cowboys and going home with
cowboys. If you meet any of these criteria,
then this is the place for you. We had the
pleasure of watching the award-winning
Mondays with Heather Thomas, Tuesdays
with Jamie Perry - shown above [r] with
friends - Thursdays with Nacha Type and
Sundays with Lauren Taylor. A truly stellar
cast of lovelies! The club also presents the
Hunks of Texas dancers for your personal
viewing pleasure. Sunday afternoons, Jerry
cooks up yummy burgers and chicken on
the patio. Rob and Milsey are your
afternoon mixologists. These two cuties are
forever getting into mischief. Last week,
one of them found out that he was dating
three friends at the same time; the
unfortunate part is, so did all three of the
friends! Stop in and ask which one of them
has three boot marks on his backside. He

The TexasAIDS Ride is coming up in
October and there are a lot of riders planning to take a week out of their lives to
bicycle from Houston to Austin and finish
in Dallas. October may seem like a long
way off, but the riders are in training and
seeking donations from now until then.
Karroll Parker is just one of the many riders
who've committed to raise $2,700 each for
40 different nonprofit AIDS services across
Texas. He has committed to training from
now until the October event and has met
PAGE 82
the challenge of other riders to raise the
most fund for one single rider in the Texas
AIDS Ride. If he can get individuals to
donate $40 from now until the event, he
can be the highest fund-raiser in the state.
Karroll has lots of competition from other
riders in other cities, but he knows that
Fort Worth can and will come through.
Your donations are needed immediately
and up until the ride. You can reach Karroll
at his office at (817)877-4419 and he'll get
a pledge sheet to you. If you have a larger
donation, from a business, organization or
group, please drop it by 657 S. Jennings
during the day or at the 651 Club in the
evenings, seven days a week. This may
seem like an impossible task, but if anyone
can make it through the entire TexasAIDS
Ride, it's definitely Karroll. He'll succeed
with all of our help. Do your part and see
if he can reach his goal and exceed all the
rest for himself and for Fort Worth. Call
and give your pledge of support today.

Daryl Jay Dietz
Oct. 1, 1960 - March 15, 1997
Daryl Jay Dietz peacefully departed this life on
March 15, 1997, after a lengthy bout with AIDS.
He was a beautiful, bright and caring individual
with a keen sense of humor who will always
remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
The year you've been gone has not made me
miss you less. I will always love you and be
thankful for our time together.
