THE ESSENCE OF THE Y
With a commitment to nurturing the potential of kids and families, promoting healthy living, and fostering a sense of social
responsibility, the Kearney YMCA ensures that every individual has access to the essentials needed to learn, grow and thrive.
EVERYONE IS WELCOME
The YMCA welcomes all who wish to participate and believes that no one should be denied access to the Y based on their ability to
pay. Through our Strong Families Campaign, the Kearney YMCA provides assistance to youth, adults and families based on
individual needs and circumstances.
COMMITTED TO OUR COMMUNITY
Financial assistance keeps the Y available for kids and families who need us most. We count on the generosity of our members and
the community to help people of all ages and from all walks of life be more healthy, confident, connected, and secure. Every day
we work side by side with our neighbors in our community to make sure that everyone regardless
of age, income, or background has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
The Membership Assistance program reduces membership fees;
IT DOES NOT ELIMINATE THEM.
All support will be granted for 12 months or UPON REQUEST.
The YMCA requests that individuals and families reapply
annually, with updated documentation.
Membership fees are subject to change when you reapply. If you
do not reapply at the time requested, your membership will
expire.
All incomplete applications will be returned without approval.
Upon approval, membership rates will be paid automatically
through bank withdraw through your checking or savings
account, or membership dues may be paid annually through
cash, check, or credit card.
Students are not eligible for Membership Assistance.

MORE THAN A SCORE
JR. LOPER FLAG FOOTBALL
YMCA Jr. Loper Flag Football program focuses on teaching fundamentals, sportsmanship and teamwork through games and drills. We follow an “everyone plays” motto which means that during the season every player receives equal practice time and plays at least half of every
game. As part of a team, everyone contributes to the team’s success. We believe that kids who have fun playing sports build a lifetime love
of healthy competition, and the best way to keep it enjoyable is to keep everyone involved. Teams will be formed by YMCA staff based on

Discover Scuba Program
Ages 18+ (Ages10-17 with parental consent)
What is Discover Scuba?
This program is designed to give participants quick training on
the bare essentials of scuba diving. This is a chance to give it a
shot in a very controlled environment under the watchful eye
of a trained professional. Familiarization with the equipment,
basic safety skills, practice in the shallow, & easily controlled
environment (like a pool) are the main components of a Discover
Scuba class. In general, if you love snorkeling, we can almost
guarantee that you’ll flip for scuba. You do not need to have
excellent form as a swimmer, the most Important criteria is that
you’re comfortable in the water.

WHAT IS PREDIABETES?
Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels
are higher than normal but not high enough
for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Risk for
developing type 2 diabetes may be reduced
or eliminated by weight loss, healthier
eating and increased physical activity.

number of points listed:

Diabetes Prevention Program
FAMILY YMCA
Can you measure a healthy
life? Sure, you can—
by the cup, the ounce,
and the block.
If you’re at risk for type 2
diabetes, you can make
small, measurable,
changes that can reduce
your risk and help you live
a happier, healthier life.
GROUP SUPPORT KEEPS
YOU MOTIVATED
Everyone needs a push, a pat on the
back, a helping hand sometimes. A little
encouragement goes a long way when
you’re making big changes. In the YMCA’s
Diabetes Prevention Program you’ll
spend a year surrounded by a group of
supportive people with common goals
who care about your well-being.
As a participant, you’ll enjoy:
• A safe space where you can feel comfortable
sharing and learning in private.
• Making new friends. You will support each
other as you all trade old habits for healthier
new ones.
• Working as a group. You don’t have
to figure this out alone.
• The new energy and confidence that
comes with losing weight and
reducing your risk for diabetes.
CHANGE IS TOUGH—WE CAN HELP Let’s face it, if change were easy,
we’d all do it. You’ve spent years developing habits that you can’t expect to
change overnight. It’s tough. We can help.
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program gives you the skills you need and
the support you deserve to make lasting healthy lifestyle changes.
IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH,
BOOST YOUR ENERGY
To help reduce your risk for diabetes, your goal in the YMCA’s
Diabetes Prevention Program is to reduce your body weight by 7% and
increaseyour physical activity by at least 150 minutes per week within
the first half of the program.
For example, if you weigh 200 pounds your goal for the first half of
the program would be to lose 14 pounds and increase your physical
activity to what could be a brisk 30-minute wa
Lose weight, boost your energy, reduce your risk for diabetes and improve
your health for life!
DID YOU KNOW?
• Eating too much sugar does not cause
diabetes, but being overweight is a risk
factor.
• People with prediabetes may not have
any symptoms.
• An estimated 86 million Americans
ages 20 years and older have
prediabetes.
• And… 89% of that 86 million have NO IDEA they’re at risk.
TESTIMONIAL
For years, Tamara Sanchez, 40, had struggled with her weight and the
underlying worry that comes from growing up in a family with a history of
diabetes. When she saw it in black and white “pre-diabetic” she knew it was
time to change. Sanchez followed up immediately and joined a class.“It’s not a
diet,” Tamara emphasizes. “You really make a life-style change.”Sanchez had
tried calorie counting before and knew the benefits of exercise. But in the
Program she learned more.“It’s what you eat, the amount of fats, that makes a
difference", she said. When you follow the class guidelines it works” It’s the
discipline of monitoring food intake and the weekly accountability that made all
the difference for Sanchez , who lost 22 pounds in the first 16 weeks. As she
reflects, Tamara said she’s very thankful for the program. “It takes a
commitment, but it’s worth it. If you consider what it would mean to lose a leg
to diabetes, or to be on insulin every day, it’s definitely the best investment
you’ll make.”
National Institutes of Health research has shown that programs like the
YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program reduces the number of new cases of
type 2 diabetes by 58% overall and by 71% in people over 60.
