becomeunavailableexcepttherecovery.
YoucanactivateAcronisTrueImageHDeitheronyourcomputerorfromanothercomputer,ifyour
computerisnotconnectedtotheInternet.
ActivationonacomputerconnectedtotheInternet
IfyourcomputerisconnectedtotheInternet,theproductwillbeactivatedautomatically.
IfthecomputerwhereyouinstallAcronisTrueImageHDdoesnothaveInternetconnectionorifthe

IfyourcomputerisnotconnectedtotheInternet,youmayactivateAcronisTrueImageHDbyusing
anothercomputerwhichhasconnectiontotheInternet.
Toactivatetheproductfromanothercomputer:
1. Onyourcomputer,installandstartAcronisTrueImageHD.
2. Onthesidebar,clickAccount,andthenclickActivateoffline.
3. IntheAcronisTrueImageHDActivationwindow,perform3simplesteps:
1. SaveyourinstallationcodetoafilebyclickingtheSavetofilebutton,andspecifya
removablemediaasthefilelocation(forexample,aUSBflashdrive).Youmayalsosimply
writedownthiscodeonapieceofpaper.
2. OnanothercomputerwhichhastheInternetconnection,goto
http://www.acronis.com/activation/.Theinstructionsonthescreenwillhelpyoutogetyour
activationcodebyusingtheinstallationcode.Savetheobtainedactivationcodetoafileona
removablemedia,orwriteitdownonpaper.
3. Onyourcomputer,clicktheLoadfromfilebuttonandspecifyapathtothefilewiththe
activationcode;or,simplytypeitintotheboxfromthepieceofpaper.
4. ClickActivate.
"Toomanyactivations"issue
Possiblereasonsfortheissue:

YouexceedthemaximumnumberofcomputerswithinstalledAcronisTrueImageHD.
Forexample,youhaveaserialnumberforonecomputerandyouinstallAcronisTrueImageHD
onthesecondcomputer.
Solutions:

Enteranewserialnumber.Ifyoudonothaveit,youcanbuythefullproductversioninthe
Acronisbuilt-instore.

Movethelicensetoyournewcomputerfromanotheroneonwhichtheproductisalready
activated.Todothis,selectthecomputerfromwhichyouwanttomovethelicense.Note
thatAcronisTrueImageHDwillbedeactivatedonthatcomputer.
YoureinstallWindows,orchangehardwareofyourcomputer.
Forexample,youmightupgrademotherboardorprocessorinyourcomputer.Activationislost,
becauseAcronisTrueImageHDseesyourcomputerasanewone.
Solution:

DataarchivingisatoolthatallowsyoutomoveyourbigorrarelyusedfilestoAcronisCloud.
Everytimeyourunthistool,itanalyzesthedataintheselectedfolderandsuggestsuploading
thefoundfilestoAcronisCloud.Youcanselectthefilesandfoldersthatyouwanttoarchive.
Afteruploading,thelocalcopiesofthesefileswillbedeleted.Afterwards,whenyouneedto
openorchangeanarchivedfile,youcandownloaditbacktoyourlocalstoragedeviceoraccess
andmanageitrightinAcronisCloud.

Familydataprotection
Familydataprotectionisaunifiedcross-platformsolutionthatallowsyoutotrackandcontrol
theprotectionstatusofallcomputers,smartphones,andtabletssharingthesameAcronis
account.Sinceusersofthesedevicesmustbesignedintothesameaccount,usuallytheyare
membersofthesamefamily.Ingeneral,eachofthemcanusethisfeature,butthereisoftena
familymemberwhoismoreexperiencedintechnologythantheothers.So,it'sreasonableto
makethatpersonresponsibleforprotectionofthefamilydata.Totrackandcontrolthe
protectionstatusofyourfamily'sdevices,usetheweb-basedOnlineDashboard,whichis
accessiblefromanycomputerconnectedtotheInternet.

AnEntirePCbackupistheeasiestwaytobackupthefullcontentsofyourcomputer.We
recommendthatyouchoosethisoptionwhenyouarenotsurewhichdatathatyouneedtoprotect.
Ifyouwanttobackupyoursystempartitiononly,refertoBackingupdisksandpartitions(p.23)for
details.
WhenyouselectEntirePCasabackuptype,AcronisTrueImagebacksupallyourinternalharddrives
indiskmode.Thebackupcontainstheoperatingsystem,installedprograms,systemsettings,andall

Cloning your hard drive
WhydoIneedit?
Whenyouseethatthefreespaceonyourharddriveisnotenoughforyourdata,youmightwantto
buyanew,largerharddriveandtransferallyourdatatothenewdrive.Theusualcopyoperation
doesnotmakeyournewharddriveidenticaltotheoldone.Forexample,ifyouopenWindows
Explorerandcopyallfilesandfolderstothenewharddrive,Windowswillnotstartfromthenew
harddrive.TheClonediskutilityallowsyoutoduplicateallyourdataandmakeWindowsbootable
onyournewharddrive.
Beforeyoustart
Werecommendthatyouinstallthetarget(new)drivewhereyouplantouseitandthesourcedrive
inanotherlocation,forexample,inanexternalUSBenclosure.Thisisespeciallyimportantfor
laptops.
Warning!Youroldandnewharddrivesmustworkinthesamecontrollermode(forexample,IDEorAHCI).
Otherwise,yourcomputerwillnotstartfromthenewharddrive.

Backupandrecovery
Backupreferstothemakingcopiesofdatasothattheseadditionalcopiesmaybeusedtorecover
theoriginalafteradatalossevent. Backupsareusefulprimarilyfortwopurposes.Thefirstistorestoreastatefollowingadisaster
(calleddisasterrecovery).Thesecondistorecoversmallnumbersoffilesaftertheyhavebeen
accidentallydeletedorcorrupted.
AcronisTrueImageHDdoesbothbycreatingdisk(orpartition)imagesandfile-levelbackups
respectively.
Backupversions
Backupversionsarethefileorfilescreatedduringeachbackupoperation.Ifyoudonotuse
consolidationfeature,theamountofversionscreatedisalwaysequaltotheamountoftimesthe
backupisexecutedortotheamountofstoredpointsintime.
So,aversionrepresentsapointintimetowhichthesystemordatacanberestored.Toputit
anotherway,backupversionsrepresentfullandincrementalbackups-seeFullandincremental
backups(p.18).
Thebackupversionsaresimilartofileversions.Thefileversionsconceptisfamiliartothosewhouse
aWindowsVistaandWindows7featurecalled"Previousversionsoffiles".Thisfeatureallowsyouto
restoreafileasitexistedonaparticulardateandtime.Abackupversionallowsyoutorecoveryour
datainasimilarway.
Thiscouldbeusefulwhentryingtofinddamagedordeletedfiles.Simplybrowsethroughthebackup
versionsintheAcronisBackupExploreruntilyoufindthebackupversioncontainingtherequired
files.Additionally,youcanrecoverdifferentsavedversionsofthefoundfiles.

Diskcloning
Thisoperationmigratesorcopiestheentirecontentsofonediskdrivetoanotherdiskdrive.This
maybenecessary,forexample,wheninstallingalargercapacitydisk.Theresultistwoidentical
driveswiththesamefilestructure.The"DiskClone"tooleffectivelycopiesallofthecontentsofone
harddiskdriveontoanotherharddiskdrive.Theoperationallowsyoutotransferalltheinformation
(includingtheoperatingsystemandinstalledprograms)fromoneharddiskdrivetoanotherwithout
havingtoreinstallandreconfigureallofyoursoftware.
AcronisTrueImageHDdoesnotprovideforcloningasinglepartition.Youcanonlyclonetheentire
drive.
Youcanalsotransferalltheinformationfromyourharddiskdrivetoanotheronebybackingupthe
entireoldharddiskandthenrecoveringthebackuptothenewdisk.
Backupvalidation
Thebackupvalidationfeatureallowsyoutoconfirmthatyourdatacanberecovered.Asmentioned
above,theprogramaddschecksumvaluestothedatablocksbeingbackedup.Duringbackup
validation,AcronisTrueImageHDopensthebackupfile,recalculatesthechecksumvaluesand
comparesthosevalueswiththestoredones.Ifallcomparedvaluesmatch,thebackupfileisnot
corruptedandthereisahighprobabilitythatthebackupcanbesuccessfullyusedfordatarecovery. Consolidation
Consolidationallowsyoutodeletebackupswhichyounolongerneedfromabackupchain.
Achaintobeconsolidatedcanconsistofafullbackupandoneormoreincrementalbackups.
Ifnecessary,youcandeletethebasefullbackupfromthechain.Theprogramwillcreateanewfull
backupinplaceoftheoldestremainingbackup.Consolidationkeepswhicheverbackupsyouchoose
anddeletesanybackupsthatarenotselected. Becauseconsolidationmayrequiresignificanttimeandsystemresources(includingdiskspace),we
recommendusingitsparingly.Inmanycases,startinganewbackupchainandthendeletingtheold
onewillbeabetterchoice.
Disasterrecovery
Recoveringfromadisasterusuallyrequiresarescuemediaandabackupofthesystempartition.
AcronisTrueImageHDprovidesforrecoveryfromadisastercausedbysystemdatacorruption,
viruses,malware,orothercauses.
Iftheoperatingsystemfailstoboot,AcronisTrueImageHDwillrecoverthesystempartition.You
cancreatearescuemediabyusingtheMediaBuildertool.
Scheduling
Foryourbackupstobereallyhelpful,theymustbeas"up-to-date"aspossible.Thismeansthatyou
shouldrunbackupsonaregularbasis.AlthoughcreatinganAcronisTrueImageHDbackupisquite
easy,onoccasion,youmayforgettodoabackup.
Withthescheduler,youdonothavetoremember.Youcanscheduleautomaticbackupsaheadof
time.Yourdatawillbebackedupaslongasthereissufficientstoragespace.
Understandingthesetermsandconceptswillbehelpfulwhenusingtheprogram'sfeatures.

The difference between file backups and
disk/partition images
Whenyoubackupfilesandfolders,onlythefilesandfoldertreearecompressedandstored.
Disk/partitionbackupsaredifferentfromfileandfolderbackups.AcronisTrueImagestoresanexact
snapshotofthediskorpartition.Thisprocedureiscalled"creatingadiskimage",or"creatingadisk
backup"andtheresultingbackupisoftencalled"adisk/partitionimage"or"adisk/partitionbackup".
Adisk/partitionbackupcontainsallthedatastoredonthediskorpartition:
1. Zerotrackoftheharddiskwiththemasterbootrecord(MBR)(applicabletoMBRdiskbackups
only).
2. Oneormorepartitions,including:
1. Bootcode.
2. Filesystemmetadata,includingservicefiles,fileallocationtable(FAT)andpartitionboot
record.
3. Filesystemdata,includingoperatingsystem(systemfiles,registry,drivers),userdataand
softwareapplications.

4. EFIsystempartition,ifany(applicabletoGPTdiskbackupsonly).
BydefaultAcronisTrueImagestoresonlytheharddisksectorsthatcontaindata.Furthermore,
AcronisTrueImagedoesnotbackuppagefile.sysunderWindowsXPandlaterandhiberfil.sys(afile
thatkeepsRAMcontentswhenthecomputergoesintohibernation).Thisreducesimagesizeand
speedsupimagecreationandrecovery.
Youcanchangethisdefaultmethodbyturningonthesector-by-sectormode.InthiscaseAcronis
TrueImagecopiesallharddisksectors,andnotonlythosethatcontaindata.

Full, incremental and differential backups
Note:Incrementalanddifferentialbackupsarenotavailableinthisproductedition.
AcronisTrueImageHDoffersyouthreebackupmethods:
1)Full:containsallofthedataatthemomentofthebackupcreation.Itformsabaseforfurther
incrementalordifferentialbackups.Itcanalsobeusedasastandalonebackup.
2)Incremental:OnlythosefileswillbeincludedwhichhavebeenchangedsincetheLASTbackup.
3)Differential:OnlythosefileswillbeincludedwhichhavebeenchangedsincethelastFULLbackup.
Wesuggestyoutochooseoneofthefollowingthreeapproachesofusingthebackupmethods:
"Full"-Astandalonefullbackupmightbeanoptimalsolutionifyouoftenrollbackthesystemtoits
initialstateorifyoudonotliketomanagemultiplefiles.
"Incremental"-Thesearemostusefulwhenyouneedfrequentbackupsandtheabilitytorollbackto
aspecificpointintime.Havingcreatedafullbackuponce,ifyouthencreateanincrementalbackup
eachdayofamonth,youwillgetthesameresultasifyoucreatedfullbackupseverydayofthe
month.Asarule,incrementalbackupsareconsiderablysmallerthanfullordifferentialbackups.

Suchabackupscenariomayconsistofaweeklyfullsystembackupwithintermediate,daily
backupsthatcoverdatathatwaschangedsincetheLASTbackup.
Thisscenario,whilerequiringlessstoragespaceandtimeforthedailybackups,willrequiremore
workfortheprogramtoproviderecoveryafterasystemcrash.IntheeventofaThursdaycrash,
theprogramwouldhavetorecovertheWednesday,Tuesday,andMondayincrementalbackups
andthelastFULLbackup.
"Differential"–isanintermediatebetweenthefirsttwoapproaches.Eachdifferentialbackup
includesallthefileschangedsincethelastfullbackup.Ittakeslesstimeandspacethan"Full",but
morethan"Incremental".Thegoodthingisthatrecoveringissimplerthanfor(2)-theprogramwill
havetorecoverthelastdifferentialbackupandthelastfullbackup.
Tochooseadesiredbackupmethod,youusuallyneedtoconfigureacustombackupscheme.For
moreinformationseeCustomschemes(p.26).
Anincrementalordifferentialbackupcreatedafteradiskisdefragmentedmightbeconsiderably
largerthanusual.Thisisbecausethedefragmentationprogramchangesfilelocationsonthediskand
thebackupsreflectthesechanges.Therefore,itisrecommendedthatyoure-createafullbackup
afterdiskdefragmentation.
Ifyouloseanincrementalbackuporitbecomescorrupted,alllaterincrementalbackupswillbeunusable.

tomakeabackupofyouroldharddiskevenifyoudecidetousecloning.Itcouldbeyourdata
saverifsomethinggoeswrongwithyouroriginalharddiskduringcloning.Forexample,there

Backup comment
Thisoptionallowsyoutoaddcommentstothebackup.Backupcommentsmayhelpyoutofindthe
necessarybackuplater,whenrecoveringdatabyusingbootablemedia.
Ifabackupdoesnothavecomments,typeyourcommentinthecommentsarea.Whenacomment
alreadyexists,youcanedititafterclickingEdit.
4.2.10 Error handling
Whentheprogramencounteredanerrorwhileperformingbackup,itstopsthebackupprocessand
displaysamessage,waitingforaresponseonhowtohandletheerror.Ifyousetanerrorhandling
policy,theprogramwillnotstopthebackupprocess,butwillsimplyhandletheerroraccordingto
thesetrulesandcontinueworking. Youcansetthefollowingerrorhandlingpolicy:

thesebackupsfromthedatabase,andAcronisTrueImageHDwillconsiderthattheystillexist.
