Ursulines Elect New Leadership Team
UrsuLine Ursuline Sisters of Toledo • Spring 2014 160 ` ` Y E A R S Celebrating God’s Faithfulness Ursulines Elect New Leadership Team The Ursuline Sisters gathered in late March to elect the new leadership team for the next four years. Sister Sandra Sherman was elected General Superior/President. Assisting on the General Council will be Sister Margaret Manion, Sister Claudia Holtz and Sister Nelda Chafitelli. Sister Sandy is currently an adjunct instructor in theology at Lourdes University and also offers Spiritual Direction and Retreat Ministry. She is the Social Justice contact person for the Ursuline Sisters and is a member of STOP (Stop Trafficking of Persons). Sister Sandy said that “My deepest desire is that together we will live as best we are able as our Directional Statement proclaims: ‘Living in holy relationship, a contemplative presence in an ever changing world.’ By this I hope we can walk in time to the call of Pope Francis in the joy of the Gospel.” Sister Margaret has been serving as First Councilor, transportation and events coordinator and part-time staff member at St. Ursula Academy. Sister Claudia, Second Councilor, is Pastoral Care Director of Ursuline Center Sister Sandra Sherman General Superior/President and liaison to the Associate members. Sister Nelda, a Jungian psychotherapist, works part time at the Ursuline Counseling and Psychological Services in Washington, DC. The Chapter of Elections was held one month after the Chapter of Affairs which focused on setting goals and planning for the next four years. The theme of the meetings was “Go forth in hope with deep prayer and courage.” A revised Directional Statement was approved by the Chapter. At the same time the Chapter reaffirmed their Mission Statement and their Vision Statement. The Mission Statement affirms: “The Ursuline Sisters of Toledo, consecrated women of the Church, graced by the charism of St. Angela Merici, promote the mission of Jesus by being available for any work of charity.” The Vision Statement further explains “In light of our mission, Toledo Ursulines are called to prayer, compassion, service and collaboration and impelled to promote the works of the Church especially empowering women.” Sister Margaret Manion Sister Claudia Holtz First Councilor Second Councilor Ursuline Sisters of Toledo Sister Nelda Chafitelli Third Councilor Page Greetings, How many times do we find ourselves playing a tune over and over in our head or can’t shake the memory of a great experience that causes one to constantly grin? I find myself reflecting, or should I say day dreaming, about my childhood days on the farm. My favorite times go back to planting potatoes by following the tractor and plow navigated by my parents, watching the bails of hay travel up to the barn loft during combining time, watching flowers bloom, catching butterflies and of course, making mud pies with stolen eggs from the chicken coup. My four dear brothers were always a part of the adventures in the barn which included their jumping out of dark areas to scare me and at times cheering one another on during a rodeo of riding cows and pigs when my parents weren’t looking. (At that time, my sister was just a twinkle in God’s eye.) Through the years as the seeds of a strong faith were planted and cultivated, I was surrounded by various testimonials of God’s love … family, fields and changing seasons. My belief is that those early years formed a foundation for my trust in the Lord especially when challenges had to be faced at various times. As time marched on, I often wondered about what was ahead, which path should I travel, or will I get through numerous growing experiences? Chapter eleven verse one of St. Paul’s letter to the Hebrews would pull everything into perspective: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” The protective hand of God surrounded and guided me constantly. As an Ursuline Sister, each day is a spiritual journey. Every single day holds an opportunity for newness and/or renewal. How I try to live the Gospels is hopefully evidence of my gratitude for all God’s gifts. Some days I might be called to lift someone’s burden, just be present to another or perhaps simply give someone a smile. St. Angela tells us to “Do something, get moving, be confident, risk new things, stick with it, get on your knees, then be ready for big surprises.” When the sun rises tomorrow morning, it will be another chance to open the windows of my soul and be ready for what God asks of me. May your lives be just as blessed as mine. May you always be open to listening to the Spirit. May you realize how much you are appreciated by all the Ursuline Sisters. You continue to be remembered in our daily prayers. Thank you for being instruments of God’s love in our lives. Mission Statement Vision Statement The Ursuline Sisters of Toledo, consecrated women of the Church graced by the charism of St. Angela Merici, promote the mission of Jesus by being available for any work of charity. In light of our mission Toledo Ursulines are: == called to prayer, compassion, service and collaboration == impelled to promote the works of the Church especially empowering women. Page 2 Sincerely, I will bless the Lord at all times; praise shall be always in my mouth. My soul will glory in the Lord that the poor may hear and be glad. Magnify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together. ~ Psalm 34:2-4 UrsuLine Spring 2014 Sisters Make a Difference in New Orleans By Sr. Mary Kay Garvin, OSU In November 2013, over 85 women religious and friends volunteered to join the St. Bernard Parish Project, a non-profit organization, established in 2006 to rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans is the only county in the history of the United States to be rendered 100% uninhabited following Katrina. As of March 2013 the project had rebuilt 479 homes. One week a year the project focuses on women religious volunteers. Prior to leaving for New Orleans, I contacted Ursulines from the Roman Union Central Province and Eastern Province with whom I would be working and living. We were urged to bring warm clothing since the job sites did not have electricity or running water. I laughed when I read that we should be prepared to get dirty and to bring old clothes not quite ready for the rag bag. With that in mind I packed old clothing with the plan to discard them before leaving New Orleans. We scheduled our arrivals at the airport in close proximity to each other. Much to my surprise our planes arrived at the same time. We hailed a cab to one of the homes where we would be staying. Although none of the resident Sisters was there because they were involved in Chapter meetings, we received a warm welcome. The bedrooms listed our names and we found many nice little surprises. The Sisters would not be returning until the following Monday so they left a car for our use. On Monday morning the women religious and friends gathered at St. Bernard Project headquarters for orientation and to receive our assignments. I was scheduled to work with the Sisters from New York and a gentleman from Massachusetts. Our job supervisors greeted us when we arrived and explained what projects we would be working on during the week. The first task was to lay laminate flooring in the bedrooms and the second was to lay tile in the kitchen and laundry room. We divided into two groups and I chose to lay flooring in the bedrooms. Before we could begin, we were instructed how to use the saws. For days we crawled on our hands and knees fitting boards together so they would be a perfect length. Many days lunch was provided by the Knights of Columbus. On other days we were encouraged to support the local establishments. Since none of us knew restaurants, we found a local gas station that served hot dogs and beverages. Since there were no tables or chairs, we took our food and sat on the curb and enjoyed lunch and many good laughs as we enjoyed each other’s company. Thursday was the highlight of the week. We joined St. Bernard Parish Project in welcoming a family home after eight years. Their new home is called a “shot gun” home because as the story goes you can shoot a bullet through the front door and it will exit through the back door. At the end of the week I came away feeling blessed and enriched from working each day with the Ursulines from the Eastern and Central provinces. During the course of the week as we shared prayer and meals, I was inspired by the young men and women who volunteer for a year of service to help others. Ursuline Sisters of Toledo Page 3 The Tapestry of Life By Jennifer Schaefer-Gatewood Director of Advancement, St. Ursula Academy On a beautiful fall day, I hopped in my car at 6:00 a.m. and drove seven hours to a tiny village in northern Illinois to meet a woman I will never forget, Helen Rosenberger ‘41. I was greeted at the door with a bright smile and a plate of homemade cookies, which were absolutely delicious. Helen is a St. Ursula Graduate from the class of 1941. I found Helen to be a remarkable woman, with a heartwarming and inspiring story. Even though she may not think of herself as a role model, I think you will agree with me that she is indeed a role model for women in the field of science and those who wish to live a life rooted in Ursuline Core Values. Helen was an only child and she grew up in the northend of Toledo. Her educational journey started a year earlier than her peers. Her father was persistent, persuasive and adamant that she start school early. The nuns agreed. When Helen’s parents divorced in 1934 she spent much of her time with her grandparents and the Ursuline Sisters of Toledo. She spoke of the sisters in her life with gratitude and reverence. She was grateful to the many Ursuline Sisters who guided, loved and cared for her during her early years of life. She never forgot the influence the Ursuline Sisters had on her life; academically, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. The nuns were always there to point her in the right direction and encouraged her to realize her full-potential. During her time at SUA she excelled in academics. She was published in several issues of the Scroll. She vividly remembers the beauty of all the magnolia trees that were planted across campus. Each tree symbolized the legacy of each graduating class at St. Ursula Academy. All of her primary, secondary, and undergraduate educational experiences were rooted in Ursuline traditions Page 4 and values. Later in life, Helen went on to pursue a master’s degree at Northwestern University. Helen felt blessed to have an Ursuline education, from grade school through college. She attended St. Angela Hall, St. Ursula Academy, and Mary Manse College, all located on Collingwood Boulevard Campus. Even her summers were blessed with Ursuline traditions. Helen was a camper and eventually a camp counselor at Camp Ladyglen. Camp Ladyglen was a summer camp that was organized by Ursuline Nuns to provide a happy, wholesome summer for young girls across the country. Girls could partake in horseback riding, archery, basketball, water sports, crafts, drama, and religious services. Camp Ladyglen was very special to her. It was a place where she spent her summers, and was able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Becoming a physical education teacher was originally the career Helen envisioned for herself, but that changed when a guest speaker who was a chemist came to her chemistry class to discuss her career. At that moment she knew chemistry was the profession for her. Helen’s words of wisdom to current students who are filled with dreams and ambitions and are considering their career path are clear and direct: “Choose a field you love. You have to enjoy your work, if you do not, forget it.” Helen was ahead of her time. In 1945, when she graduated from Mary Manse College, she started her career as a chemist at a company in Dayton, Ohio. She recalled going to a chemistry conference early in her career where she was only one of two women in attendance. In the 1940’s, women were not widely accepted in the field of science, much less encouraged to specialize in chemistry. The gender disparity in her chosen field did not hold her back, nor did it discourage her from following her dreams. One of SUA’s earliest scientists, Helen Rosenberger ‘41 truly inspires our young graduates of today. Originally they met at the Christmas season when many were visiting families for the holidays. This led from occasional 2014 - 2018 potlucks in the evening to the ease of meeting at a restaurant (Affirmed February 22, 2014) for supper/lunch followed by continued conversation in homes. There has been a natural fluidity in the group over the years due to varied life circumstances. “Living in holy relationship, The beauty of this silver anniversary lies in the a contemplative presence friendships forged may years ago that have deepened since in an ever changing world.” Ursuline days. Recently, a group of eight enjoyed a holiday lunch together, shared simple gifts, and celebrated the gift of (Ursulines of Toledo) continued friendship. For most, established careers have moved into well deserved retirement with part-time work and diverse volunteer activities. Church ministry is enriched by the experience and talents of these women in myriad ways: liturgists, organists, choir directors, Religious Education teachers, Pastoral Council and parish committees, St. Vincent dePaul, Days of Service, Social Justice activities, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, meals for the homeless, visiting the homebound, presentations on spirituality and prayer, and an openness to respond to whatever is needed. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1918 to Joseph and Rose Cosentino. She entered the Ursuline Convent after having graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1946. Prior to her entrance she taught in the public schools of Milan and Sandusky, Ohio. She joined her sister, Sister M. Antoinette, who had entered 10 years earlier. Sister Mary Jane excelled in science and was awarded many honors locally, state-wide and nationally, as an outstanding Science teacher. She was always available to her students when they needed encouragement and was particularly helpful to them as they prepared exhibits for Science Fairs. Many of her students received First Place Awards and went on to major in college in the science field. Sister Mary Jane also helped keep the Stamp Collection up to date and was meticulous in preparing stamps for sale to stamp collectors. She was interested in current affairs and kept herself abreast of world and local news. She was communityminded and willing to help others as long as her health would permit. She died on December 31 after having suffered several “spells” with a heart condition. Sr. Mary Jane receives NCEA (National Catholic Education Association) award from Rev. Vincent Duminuco SJ.
