Our ultimate goal is to provide a model of disease prevention and a holistically healthy living guide, combining compassion for all individuals travelling the road from chronic disease to health. • "It's not the destination, it's the journey," a journey often littered with misdiagnoses, frustration and despair. Health is normal to the body supplied by quality nutrients. Most health situations result from nutritional deficiencies, toxicity overload, pathogenic infiltration, digestive and biotic imbalances, deficient immune function, poor quality water, to name a few causes. Our focus is to restore natural and optimal physiological functions offering “holistic” strategies for sustainable healing. VISION Doctors Across Borders acknowledged an emerging awareness and recognised the need for an integrated healthcare system that utilises the best of conventional care along with a holistic, integrated alternative medicine. DAB, an interdisciplinary organisation of natural medicine professionals drawing from various systems of healing from across the globe, including natural medicine, herbalism, traditional and allopathic practices thus widening our scope of treatment. Doctors Across Borders believe in wellness, longevity, and the body’s ability to heal itself when provided the nutrients it may presently be deficient in. The body is made divinely and has inherent, marvelous systems of support that work synergistically to boost ones immune function and heal tissue. We do not treat symptoms, rather, we aim to establish the cause as to why the imbalance / disease manifested. Our treatments are patient specific as opposed to disease specific as we address improper lifestyle habits that lead to imbalance. The unhealthy habits all need addressing for change to begin. A LITTLE HISTORY Doctors Across Borders was founded in 1992 by Dr. Michael McDonald and later brought into existence by T/Dr. Colleen O’Carroll who worked closely with Dr. McDonald on various herbal formulations that form the foundation of DAB’s treatment protocols. Doctors Across Borders started as an ocean venture with a fully equipped medical boat sailing from Aiden to the shores of the Comoros, Egypt, England, Greece, India, Mafia, Mauritius, Mayotte, Pemba, Red Sea, Singapore, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Turkey, Yemen and Zanzibar to name a few. In 1998 the team returned to Southern Africa and started serving communities in Namibia and later various other regions in South Africa. The team dynamics changed yet again in 2009 when Dr. Jaqueline Harmsen joined the team, after having spent some time in Mexico researching Cancer and other dreaded diseases. A LITTLE HISTORY (Cont.) Of the 52.2 million people in South Africa, 84% currently experience chronically poor healthcare, due to their financial circumstance, of which 19 million reside in rural areas. In the cities 25 million people are estimated to have good healthcare and approximately 8.2 million are not receiving adequate healthcare at all. From these estimated figures, one can see that South Africa is currently experiencing a health care crisis. With this in mind the Doctors Across Borders team continues to expand with professionals offering general medical care, surgery, dentistry, herbalism, traditional African and Chinese medicine, psychology and specialty treatments of Cancer and other dreaded diseases. We have recently added a division of Veterinary Medicine as well as Emergency and Extreme Rescue specialists to our team. SERVICES AND PROJECTS The Doctors Across Borders team provides medical services in various underprivileged and impoverished communities within South Africa where all too often government facilities are not accessible or non-existent. We have begun with other cultural communities such as Indians, Rastafarians and Muslims. • While government clinics offer basic services many of these communities have members whom require specialised medical care due to the nature of their illnesses. The Doctors Across Borders team offers diversity due to the variety of specialists attending the community “bush” clinics, covering basic health care to specialised treatments in the cases of chronic and dreaded diseases • All patients receive a personal consultation and a variety of medicines as prescribed by the doctors on duty SERVICES AND PROJECTS (Cont.) One of the key differentiators is the team’s intimate knowledge of Cancer and dreaded diseases allowing the doctors to offer specialised treatment programs where individuals are treated by means of a “healing journey”, a journey unlike the boundaries of convention where individuals often become generic patients. Each patient is nurtured through an individually tailored and adaptive health and wellness program provided to them in the “bush” as travel to city clinics are not possible. • The DAB Doctors provides a variety of additional services including the intervention of dreaded disease outbreaks in a time of crisis or disaster with the inclusion but not limitation of the successful treatment of Cholera, Hepatitis, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and have been providing this service for many years, unaided and unfunded • Our team of professionals works very closely with Governments and other global organisations with regards to the setup and integration of alternative practices by offering our very own medicine, healing protocols and training at designated institutes, this includes the expansion of Malaria and TB clinics into Africa and other countries such as DRC, Mauritius, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Mozambique.h as SERVICES AND PROJECTS (Cont.) The DAB team offers a medical service to corporate organisations facing ongoing expenses and challenges where staff members fall victim to a variety of dreaded diseases as a result of occupation hazard or environmental exposure. We believe we can assist these organisations by treating and nurturing these individuals back to good health allowing them to continue their employment obligations and thus avoiding all too often situation of temporary disability or medical boarding • Team members are passionate about inspiring and empowering individuals through education by means of tailored “conscious and lifestyle” talks and workshops where a variety of topics are discussed at these events • Our Emergency Rescue and Extreme Rescue Units service the Tsitsikamma and Cape Town districts offering emergency services in the field as well as at corporate, social, sporting and school events COMMUNITIES WE SERVE The Doctors Across Borders team currently serves several community “bush” clinics in Kwazulu Natal and the Eastern Cape on a monthly basis. The clinics are held in remote areas where medical facilities are scarce or nonexistent. These clinics include : Hillcrest • Hopewell • Inhlazuka • Isipingo • Maromini • Mkomaas • Mid Illovo • Phuthaditjhaba • Richmond • Stanger • Tsitsikamma • Umbumbulu • Nelspruit 300 to 500 patients are seen during the monthly clinic tours, with a steady incline in numbers as more people are made aware of the clinics and as a result of new clinics being opened. CHALLENGES IN THE FIELD The Doctors are constantly faced with new challenges when serving at the community “bush” clinics where allopathic medicines and treatment protocols are not available and the DAB team are forced as a result to provide a sustainable treatment program that is not only always available, but affordable for the patients. The lack of medical supplies and medicines forces our teams to think out of the box and substitute these treatment programs with medicine that is readily available to their patients. In many cases the doctors will prescribe herbal and natural medicine and is truly amazing to see the results. FINANCIAL CHALLENGES Doctors Across Borders has been funded personally by members of the team with a dream and passion to make a difference. Unfortunately with the demand and need to serve larger communities the team cannot sustain the financial resources required to serve these communities nor grow the clinics. Funding is required to help ensure operational independence and flexibility. With 500+ patients seen each month during community “bush” clinic tours a total spend of R 397 802 per month on average facilitates the medicines dispensed, vehicle costs (as per AA calculations), toll fees and accommodation. This figure continues to grow with the expansion of these clinics and the teams required to serve them. Ambulances & mobile clinics, medical & dentistry equipment, medicine, First Aid equipment, 4x4 vehicles & trailers, fuel & maintenance, tyres, insurance, toll fees, flights, accommodation, legal fees & administration, ICT and marketing are but a few things that make our world go round, and without funding for these facilities we cannot pursue this outrageous dream… FINANCES Doctors Across Borders is a non-profit organisation and more than 80 per cent of our resources are allocated to our humanitarian activities. The remaining 20 per cent is spent on management and administration, and reinvested in fundraising. The use of Doctors Across Borders funds is tightly controlled and the audited financial report defines the different categories of income and expenditure and shows how funds are raised and spent. Many of the illnesses we treat are a direct result of poor nutrition and insufficient fluid intake. Sustainable farming projects managed by the communities we serve will ensure that basic nutritional requirements are met by providing the community with vegetables and fruits known to facilitate healthy living. A fully accessible group of Integrated Medical Clinics is planned for the near future, once funds are sufficient. FUTURE PROJECTS II “Our children are the rock on which our future is built, our greatest asset as a nation. They will be the leaders of our country, the creators of our national wealth, those who care for and protect our people”. Doctors Across Borders would like to embark on educational programs at the many schools within the communities we serve teaching our new generation about healthy living, disease prevention, life skills and much more… Members of the community will be trained and skilled to ensure they can take over these programs thus creating employment. “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children”. OUR ACHIEVEMENTS The passion and dedication of the Doctors Across Borders team has seen more than 1 million patients treated thus far. Our clinics have doubled since 2012 and continue to grow with new clinics added monthly. Many patients have fully recovered from their illnesses with the successful treatment of Cancer, Hepatitis, Malaria, and Tuberculosis to name a few. AFFILIATED ORGANISATIONS Damaansa Holdings (Pty) Ltd Damaansa Holdings is an independent partnership working to research and develop new and improved treatments for many of the known dreaded diseases and is the provider of FaithTM Drops endorsed by Doctors Across Borders and prescribed and issued to our patients.
