WEATHER Altitude, rather than latitude, governs climate in Central America. Terrain ranges between sea level and 3000m, and temperature can vary by as much as twenty degrees. The year is divided into two seasons, rainy season from May to October and dry season from November to April. Yearly average temperatures in the region rarely change, with daytime temperatures in the lowlands being the hottest, averaging from 28 to 32°C. The coastal areas or the low inland plains are where you will feel the heat the most. In the mountains the weather can be cooler and fresh, with temperatures more like 22 to 25°C. Hurricane Season runs from June through November, with September and October being the peak months. Many people shy away from the Caribbean during this season, but if you're willing to take the risk, you can save a lot on accommodation and experience a quieter vacation because there are fewer tourists around.
