and a precious experience I feel lucky to have
enjoyed with three children. I can still vividly
remember the excitement of my first pregnancy.
I can also remember how much I struggled
with how to dress my growing bump. That was
twelve years ago when maternity fashion wasn't
what it is now, and my husband’s shirts were
my only style solution. It’s also the
idea from which Isabella Oliver
grew. Pregnancy clothes should

FIT AND CONSTRUCTION
We’re quite unique in that our entire design team
is based together in London. This means changes
can be made instantly. Nobody rests until every
style fits to perfection.
FABRIC SELECTION
We take time to select premium fabrics that will
be able to do three very important jobs:

sensitive pregnant skin.
2. They need to look great after multiple wears
and washes.

Our founder, Baukjen launched
the brand 12 years ago. We asked
her to tell us more...
Why did you launch Isabella Oliver?
I made every mistake in the book when it came
to dressing when I was pregnant with my first
child. Let’s just say that oversized shirts and giant
fleeces did not make for a stylish nine months but
there were very few options. I couldn’t believe how
difficult it was. Women don’t suddenly stop wanting
to look stylish just because they have a bump. In
fact, at a time when your confidence can feel quite
shaky, it’s never more important. I wanted to fix this.
That was 12 years ago now and I’m very proud with
how much Isabella Oliver has achieved.
What are your priorities for Isabella Oliver?
Quality. Quality is exceptionally important for
us. We believe you only need to buy a few great
pieces to take you through your pregnancy. Great
quality means these pieces will last so a small
investment gives optimum rewards. Women don’t
want throwaway fashion anymore – especially not
with maternity wear. That’s not to say they don’t
still want stylish clothing. They absolutely do
and so another of our priorities is to design
desirable pieces women genuinely want to wear.
And finally, we want to make dressing easy so
our pieces grow with you. There’s no need to
size up or to buy for different stages.
There are a lot of pregnancy style myths
and rules, what has your experience taught
you about these?
There are a lot of misconceptions. The obvious
one is that people think they have to wear
something baggy and although certain styles
can work, fitted pieces are very flattering and
look and feel really chic. Our design signature is
very much based around supporting the bump
to create a beautiful figure-hugging silhouette.
You’re a businesswoman and a mother
of three. How do you make it work?
It’s a balancing act. Women are faced with a
lot of demands today and we all put a lot of
additional pressures on ourselves. I’m especially
lucky to have a talented team and a very
supportive family who help make it all possible.
I’m also very faithful with how I spend my time
with my kids. From the time I walk through the
door, to the time they go to bed, I'm with them.
Homework, bath time or watching cartoons – it
doesn’t matter, that’s our time. But then my
husband Geoff is the company’s CEO so it’s
easier to be flexible. If we do need to continue
working on something after this, we can. I
absolutely consider myself lucky to have been
able to take so many opportunities and run
with them.
