SINDHU IN HYDERABAD (IANS). Sports minister forms enquiry committee to probe Jaisha allegations NEW DELHI, (IANS) Spor ts Minister Vijay Goel on Tuesday constituted a two-member committee to enquire into women marathoner O.P. Jaisha's allegations about official apathy and callousness during the Rio Olympics. The committee consists of joint secretary (Spor ts) Onkar Kedia and director (Spor ts) Vivek Narayan. The two member committee will submit its repor t in seven days, a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release said. "It has been widely repor ted in the media that Ms. O.P. Jaisha, marathon runner collapsed at the end of the marathon run in Rio Olympics 2016, as there were no Indian officials present to provide her water and energy drinks at refreshment points and that there were officials from all other countries to provide refreshments to their runners at designated points after every 2.5 kms," the release added. Jaisha on Monday revealed shocking levels of official incompetence, which she claimed could have even proved fatal for her. Jaisha claimed that Indian officials did not bother to make arrangements to provide water and energy drinks to her during the race despite designated stations after every 2.5 kilometres being allocated for Indian athletes. Jaisha finished 89th in the event with a below-par timing of 2 hours, 47 minutes and 19 seconds. "It was very hot there. The competition was at 9 a.m., I ran in scorching heat. There was no water for us, neither recovery drinks nor food. Only once in 8 kms did we get water (from the Rio organisers) which did not help at all. All the countries had their stalls at every two kms but our country's stall was empty," Jaisha told a television news channel. "We are supposed to be given drinks by our technical officials, it's the rule. We cannot take water from any other team. I saw the Indian board there but there was nothing. I had a lot of problem, I fainted after the race. I was administered glucose, I thought I would die," she added. Jaisha had collapsed at the finish line after completing the marathon and had to be rushed to a hospital where her coach Nikolai Snesarev got into an altercation with one of the doctors and was detained by the local police for several hours. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has brushed aside her claims, saying she made those allegations against the governing body to cover up her poor per formance. The federation even said the athlete herself refused any arrangement when approached a day before the event by the officials. MATCH POINT BY DR ADNAN MIECHAL PHELPS, USAIN BOLT PERHAPS MOST DECORATED OLYMPIANS OF ALL TIME; FINISHED OLYMPIC RUNS IN STYLE Midweek Exclusive BRAMPTON - Brazil and the world bid farewell Sunday to the 31st Olympiad, first ever Olympic Games in South America, a 16 days of glory combined with numerous highlight-reel moments including top quality stories of world's most decorated Olympians with the likes of Miechal Phelps and Usain Bolt both putting deep impact on these games. Michael Phelps ends recordbreaking career with 23rd Olympic gold medals. Bolt on other competing the triplet in Athletics. Other people's fantasy is Bolt's reality, now 9 golds in the bag. Another phenomenal run, Incredible Bolt! Wut more u can ask for? If Usain Bolt had participated in the same number of events as Michael Phelps, he might have won 30 GOLD medals in the Olympics. So now Usain Bolt's 9 Gold medals are most by any sportsman without winning Silver or Bronze this beating the previous record of 8 set by Ray Ewry of USA in 1900-1908. So overall, 121 Olympic medals for USA - most since winning 174 in 1984. But if you look back, Max medals for #USA in a single Olympics are 239 in 1904 St. Louis, 174 in 1984 Los Angeles and now 121 in 2016. But beauty of these 121 medals won by USA in Rio 2016 are most by them in any any Olympics outside USA. Their third highest overall. Participated in 27 Olympics, finished 1st in 17, finished 2nd in 8, finished 3rd in 2. They never finished below third! Wow. One more interesting fact in Rio2016 was the GOLD count showing GBR with 27, GB finish second in Rio2016, which is their 2nd best in any Olympics. They finished 1st in 1908 London. Four times on third spot including 2012 in their home. Next comes CHN on 26, TEXAS 26 and rest of USA 20, then followed by RUS 19 and GER 17. So emphasis was on the share of South side of America. In an overall view 59 countries won at least a Gold, 87 countries won at least a medal and 120 countries went without medals. The worst part was the south Asian share on medal table Having 8 South Asian countries in Rio2016 which make 21% of world's population, 3% of world's area, 9.12% of global economy and the Medals make only 0.21% share on the table, the only two getting the place out of 975. India finally managed to claim a medal in Rio2016 Olympics with Bronze to Sakshi Malik in the women's wrestling in 58kg freestyle. It's been quite a wait for India at Rio2016, but thanks to SakshiMalik. Second medal went to PV Sindhu who misses on Gold narrowly and becoming the first Indian female to win a Silver in the history of Olympics. Now looking upon the hosts, Brazil GRABS last two big GOLDS in football and volleyball to finish 31 Olympiad in style. Bra, FIFAWC champs, a record 5 times 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 & 2002. Finally managed to win their 1st Football Olympics Gold, Neymar the shootout hero, blasts Brazil to Olympic football gold against Germany, the old arch rivals in a Revenge Match and ultimately accomplishing the job. Soccer-crazed Brazil getting partial payback against Germans two years after a 7-1 World Cup final shellacking that left many in Latin America's largest nation fuming. Canada won an impressive 22 medals in Rio to equal the total from the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Penny Oleksiak carried the flag for Canada at the ceremony, capping a breakout Games for the 16-year-old swimmer from Toronto. Oleksiak grabbed national attention back home early in the Games by winning four medals, including Canada's first gold. Thousands of fans braved strong winds and sporadic rains to watch the closing ceremony in iconic Maracana Stadium. At the end, The governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, accepted the flag from IOC President Thomas Bach and Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes, signalling the end of the 2016 Games and the transition to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan. India's (official) Olympic spend a third of UK's - and falling BY ABHISHEK WAGHMARE India's last Olympic gold-medal winner, Abhinav Bindra, recently pointed to United Kingdom's spending on athletes at the Rio Olympics, emphasising the money needed to conver t performance into medals. An IndiaSpend analysis of spending on Olympics in particular, and spor ts in general, reveals that India spends roughly a third to a four th of the money spent by the UK, which won 67 medals, compared to India's two -- and central funding to spor ts federations is falling. The UK spends money on fewer athletes compares to India, where spending is diffused among numerous federations and athletes, according to our analysis. The UK has 18 million people aged between 15 and 35, while India has more than 400 million youth in that age group. The original story in the Guardian, a UK newspaper, calculated a £5.5 million ($7 million) investment per medal by UK Spor t, a government body that funds and manages Olympic spor t. The UK, in general, spends $1.5 billion (Rs 9,000 crore) on spor ts infrastructure and training through an annual spor ts budget, while UK Spor t spent about $350 million on Olympics preparation over four years (20132017). In comparison, India spends a third of UK, or $500 million (Rs 3,200 crore) on youth affairs and spor ts through the Union budget and the states, according to estimates from our review of spor ts budgets of six large states. The same Union budget funds -- through the ministry of youth affairs and spor ts -- national spor ts federations (NSFs) and potential Olympic athletes through the National Spor ts Development Fund (NSDF) and Target Olympic Podium (TOP) programme. The NSDF is also funded through private organisations and public sector enterprises, apar t from government contributions. In India, Rs 750 crore was spent on spor t-specific federations, training centres, coaches and other infrastructure over four years (2012-13 to 201516), while the spending on athletes is Rs 22.7 crore through NSDF (109 athletes) and Rs 38 crore thought the TOP programme (97 athletes for 2016 Olympics, excluding paraOlympic athletes) over the last four years. The Scarborough, Ontario native was almost perfect in his first two games as a member of the Beast last April. He allowed just one goal per star t and stopped 57 of the 59 shots he faced in collecting two wins against tough opponents, including the Adirondack Thunder and Elmira Jackals. D'Agostini's 1.00 goals against average and sizzling .966 save percentage were far and away the most impressive goaltending statistics from the 2015-16 season and helped him emerge from the pack and earn a full contract for the 2016-17 ECHL season. Prior to joining the Beast last season, D'Agostini enjoyed two full seasons at the University of Guelph, where he emerged as one of the best goaltenders in the Canadian university system. In his first season with the Gryphons in 2014-15, he appeared in a total of 31 games (regular season and playoffs) and posted a 18-11 record and helped his squad to capture a CIS bronze medal while being named the tournament's top goaltender. One year later, D'Agostini continued to shine as a member of the Gryphons and posted a stellar 19-14 record with a 2.47 goals against average and a .924 save percentage. The 5'11", 174-pound netminder earned his spot in university hockey after a stellar Ontario Hockey League Career with the Peterborough Petes from 2009 to 2014. His best season in the 'O' came in the 2012-13 campaign when he posted a 3.24 goals against average and a .911 save percentage in 43 games played.
