mark in Southland Conference play which marks the fourth consecutive season SFA has
recorded above a .500 record in league games. It marks the longest stretch of conference

Jordan Wiggs, were named to 2013 College Football Performance Awards Watch Lists

2013 LUMBERJACK FOOTBALL
HEAD COACH J.C. HARPER:
Entering his ninth season with the
Lumberjack football program, J.C. Harper is
in his seventh season as Stephen F. Austin's
head coach. The architect of SFA's most
successful two-year stretch in program
history, and one of the nation's most
explosive offenses, Harper is a two-time SLC
Coach of the Year who is only 14 wins shy
of becoming the school's all-time winningest
head coach.
Although Harper's background was
on the defensive side of the ball, he has
produced some of the nation's most
explosive offensives since 2008. The 2013
season marked the third time in the past
four years SFA has led the nation in passing
offense during the regular season. The
’Jacks have been ranked among the nation's
top six in passing each of the past five
seasons, with two passing national titles.
SFA has ranked among the nation's top 10 in
total offense each of the past four seasons,
and among the nation's top 10 in scoring
offense in three of the last four seasons.
Harper's athletes have reaped the
benefits of his time as head coach. Over
the course of the past six seasons 93
SFA athletes have earned All-SLC honors,
including 26 first-team selections and 55
have received All-America honors including
2010 Walter Payton Award winner Jeremy
Moses, and 2013 CFPA Elite Defensive
Performer Willie Jefferson. In addition to
that, Harper has produced three league
newcomers of the year, two players of the
year, two defensive players of the year, an
SLC offensive player of the year and has had
two players drafted, and nine others have
signed free agent contracts.
A 23-year veteran of collegiate
coaching, Harper was at Western Michigan
prior to joining the SFA staff. Prior to Western
Michigan, Harper spent four seasons as an
assistant in the SLC helping Northwestern
State and McNeese State to three playoff
appearances.
Following a four-year playing career at
Clemson, where the Tigers won three ACC
Championships, Harper began his coaching
career as a graduate assistant at North
Carolina under Mack Brown. He later served
two seasons as a graduate assistant for
coach Lou Holtz at Notre Dame.
Harper and his wife, Marcie, are the
parents of a son, Michael (7) and daughter,
Emma (3).
GAME 2
BITS and PIECES …
• Brady Attaway passed for 450 yards and four touchdowns in the 'Jacks opener at
Weber State. The senior quarterback moved into ninth place all-time in Southland Conference history with 7,429 passing yards, surpassing Southeastern Louisiana's Brian
Babin (7,405 passing yards). Attaway also passed up Babin (670) in the league's all-time
completion record book with his now 692 career completions.
*Attaway is 11-12 (.478) all-time as the Lumberjacks' starting quarterback.
• The Lumberjacks are 17-21 (.447) in televised games dating back to the 1998 season. SFA was 2-4 (.333) in televised games in 2012.
*Willie Jefferson and Josh Aubrey, although going undrafted this past NFL Draft, both
landed on the 53-man rosters of the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns, respectively, this past week. Jefferson (LB) was a first-team All-Southland Conference selection and the 2011 SLC Newcomer of the Year. Aubrey was a four-time all-conference
selection and started 46 games in his career.
• The ’Jacks are 83-43 (.659) against unranked Division I FCS teams since 1992.
• Since 1995, the Lumberjacks are 21-33 (.389) against teams ranked in the NCAA Division I FCS top 25. After dropping 13 of 17 games against ranked teams, SFA has now
split its last 10 games against the top 25.
• An overtime win over Louisiana Tech in 2000 was the first ever win over an NCAA Division I FBS (formerly I-A) team by the Lumberjacks. The ’Jacks are 2-13 (.133) all-time
versus FBS opponents. That mark includes a 2003 victory over Louisiana-Monroe. The
’Jacks are 0-2 against FBS schools in 2012.
• SFA is 6-2 (.750) all-time in overtime games. The ’Jacks had overtime wins over Central Oklahoma (38-31) ansd Louisiana Tech (34-31) in 2000, and beat Cal State Northridge (30-27) and Jacksonville State (44-37) in 2001. SFA added its fifth overtime game
with a victory over Northern Arizona in 2004. SFA defeated Nicholls, 27-21, to pick up
an overtime win in 2005. SFA dropped a 34-31 overtime contest to Sam Houston State
in 2008.
• Since joining Division I FCS in 1986, SFA is 25-3 (.893) against non-Division I teams.
The ’Jacks lost to Angelo State, 28-24, in 1990 and dropped a 17-14 decision in 2006.
SFA opened the 2007 season with a 27-24 overtime loss to Tarleton State.
LEFTOVERS FROM THE 2012 SEASON ...
• Gus Johnson posted his fifth 100-yard rushing game, and his second 200-yard rushing game of the season when he carried the ball 33 times for 211 yards and a score
against the Demons (Nov.17). Johnson was only four yards shy of his career high. It was
also the eighth-best single-game total in school history.
• Gus Johnson finished the season with 954 yards rushing, which is the 11th-best
single-season total in program history, and the most by a Lumberjack since Derrick
Blaylock rushed for 1,382 yards in 2000.
• Home Sweet Home: SFA has made Homer Bryce Stadium one of the toughest places
to play for conference teams over the course of the past three seasons. SFA is 13-1
(.929) in SLC games at home since 2010. The lone loss during that stretch was a threepoint setback to Texas State in 2010.
• Cordell Roberson closed out his collegiate career recording his 39th touchdown
reception against the Demons (Nov. 17). His 39 TD catches tied him for 12th all-time at
the NCAA FCS level.

THE OPPONENT
*The Lumberjacks' trip to Lubbock to play Texas Tech will mark the second meeting
between the two schools on the gridiron.
*Thirty-four-year-old Texas Tech head coach, Kliff Kingsbury, the youngest coach at a BCS
school and former Red Raiders quarterback, made his head coaching debut with a 41-23
road win at SMU in the program's 2013 season opener. Baker Mayfield, believed to be the
first walk-on true freshman quarterback to start a season opener for a BCS school, threw
for 413 yards and four touchdowns while adding one score on the ground.
* Texas Tech holds an all-time record of 66-18-3 in home season openers
* Texas Tech has posted 17 winning seasons in the last 18 years. The 2011 season (5-7
overall) marked Tech’s first losing season since 1992. The Red Raiders have been bowl
eligible in 19 of the last 20 years.
* Texas Tech is currently riding a 195 game scoring streak that dates back to Oct. 25,
1997. During this stretch, Tech has scored in double digits 184 times.
• Texas Tech will honor the memory of Coach Jess Stiles on Saturday with helmet decals
and a special in-game recognition. Coach Stiles was part of the Tech program for 42 years.
*Since 1978 when the NCAA divided its Division I schools into two divisions, Texas Tech has
compiled an all-time record of 16-1 against FCS opponents. In 2006, the NCAA renamed
Division IA and Division I-AA to FBS and FCS to note the distinction in football programs.
• Texas Tech defeated Northwestern State 44-6 in last year’s home opener.
• Texas Tech has won its last 20 home-opening games.
• Then No. 15 Oklahoma was the last team to defeat Texas Tech in a home opener as the
Sooners scored a 34-9 win over the Red Raiders on Sept. 3, 1992. That game was prior
to the formation of the Big 12 Conference.
• Texas Tech is playing an FCS opponent in its home opener for the fifth time in the last
nine seasons.
SFA vs. DIVISION FBS (I-A)
The Lumberjacks have posted a 2-13 (.133) record all-time versus NCAA Division I FBS (formerly I-A) opponents. SFA first played an FBS opponent in 1988 when it
traveled to Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on Southern Miss and Brett Favre. The Golden
Eagles beat SFA, 21-7.
In 1990, SFA dropped a 31-22 decision to Louisiana Tech in Ruston. SFA then
skipped all the way to the 1998 season before facing an FBS opponent again when
they took on UL-Monroe, in Monroe. The Indians handed SFA a 21-10 loss. The ’Jacks
turned right around the next year and took on Utah State in 1999. The Aggies beat the
Lumberjacks 51-17. SFA claimed its first ever win over a FBS opponent in 2000, beating Louisiana Tech 34-31 in overtime.
Ryan Rossner, a freshman at the time, kicked a 35-yard field goal in the
second overtime period for the win. The win boosted the ’Jacks to a No. 10 national
ranking.
SFA closed out the 2001 season against Texas Tech, dropping a 58-3 decision
to the Galleryfurniture.com Bowl-bound Red Raiders. SFA opened the season with a
67-7 setback at TCU to start the 2008 campaign.
The Lumberjacks opened the 2009 season at SMU, and jumped out to a 2314 fourth-quarter lead, only to see the Mustangs score 17 unanswered in the game's
final 14 minutes for the win.
