Centre Georges Pompidou Address Place Georges Pompidou 1 75191 Paris France http://www.centrepompidou.fr . Centre Georges Pompidou is a complex in the Beaubourg area of the IVe arrondissement of Paris, near Les Halles and the Marais. It houses the Bibliothèque publique d'information, a public library, the Musée National d'Art Moderne, and IRCAM, a centre for music and acoustic research. The building was designed by the architects Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers and Sue Rogers and engineers Peter Rice and Edmund Happold, whose design was not popular at first. However, under the guidance of its first director, Pontus Hultén, it quickly became a noted attraction in Paris. The Pompidou 'revolutionized museums,' the Pritzker jury said, 'transforming what had once been elite monuments into popular places of social and cultural exchange, woven into the heart of the city. The characteristic piping is colour-coded according to the contents: yellow for electricity, red for transport, blue for water, and green for air.' [Wikipedia.org] photo: Michael Buschor . The Bercy-Charenton Mall by Renzo Piano in Paris, is located on the outskirts of Paris, near the 'Echangeur de la Porte de Bercy' in the intersection of Boulevard Peripherique. Faced with this tangle urban road, the mall is conceived as an object closed and introverted. The complex includes commercial activities, offices, hotel, underground parking, with a clear horizontal direction. The interior is organized around a street covered with top lighting. . Atelier Brancusi Address Place Georges-Pompidou 1 75004 Paris France . Constantin Brancusi arrived in Paris in 1904 after attending the Bucharest School of Fine Arts. He created the majority of his works in his Paris studios. Shortly before he died, he bequeathed his studio and all its contents to the French government on condition that the Musée National d'Art Moderne reconstitute the studio as it had been in its original location near Montparnasse. Architect Renzo Piano reproduced Brancusi's studio on one side of the Place Georges Pompidou, next to the eponymous Centre. The layout of the studio has been reconstituted down to the last detail with Brancusi's sculptures, photographs, manuals, discs and tools to satisfy the artist's wish to have his work displayed in its entirety. photo: Nazar Leskiw . Rue des Suisses Address Rue des Suisses 17 75014 Paris France http://17ruedessuisses.mirrorz.com/ . This is the first project in Paris by the Herzog De Meuron team on an unusual site in the 14th Arrondisement not far from Gare Montparnesse. The result of a 1966 competition sponsored by the Paris public housing agency Régie Immobilière de la Paris (RVIP), the project is built on three interconnected parcels that include infill sites on two sides of a long perimeter block that face a long narrow plot on the interior of the block. The infill buildings are built to the neighbourhood height of 7 floors, while the interior slab is only 3 floors in height. Entry to the interior of the block is made beneath the infill buildings. In addition to the 4 story difference in building height, the long narrow block designed as a free-standing element in a long narrow garden and is protected with curving rolling wooden blinds that are in sharp contrast to the folding metal blinds that cover the façades of the street buildings. The three buildings contain about 60 flats and basement parking. . Project is not public! . Cinémathèque Française Address Rue de Bercy 51 75012 Paris France http://www.cinematheque.fr/ . The Cinémathèque is setting up in the building which was initially conceived by the architect Frank O. Gehry known as the famous Bilbao Guggenheim museum architect. The Cinémathèque building was wittily named "the dancer raising her tutu" by its creator. It faces a park on one side and features a reception hall which makes use of space and light in a very nice way, contrasting with the elevation made of white stone on the side facing Bercy Street. The inside spaces, reconverted by the architect Dominique Brard, make use of an abundance of inclined planes which enable communication between the different volumes and the great number of overlaped levels. [from the project's website] Cinémathèque Française hosts the largest archive of films, movie documents, and film-related objects in the world. It holds daily screenings of a variety of films from all over the world. photo: iSiDA . Project is public! . Communist Party Headquarters Address Place Colonel Fabien 2 75019 Paris France http://www.pcf.fr . The avant-garde building conceived by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer has become super hip. In 2000, Italian fashion house Prada rented the building to present its collection. Niemeyer has created a beautiful building. He wanted a simple construction without ornament. The walls of the Place du Colonel Fabien have kept the marks of the wooden boards used to build them. Oscar Niemeyer said the headquarters was ''a piece of work which will constitute in this city, I am sure, an example of contemporary architecture, and even, permit me to say, a tourist attraction.'' The main conference room with metal slates hanging vertically on the walls is situated below ground level and has Niemeyer desks and chairs. The room's dome (see the satellite images) is on the lawn in front of the curved six-story main building, sheathed in glass. . Project is public! . Fondation Cartier Address Boulevard Raspail 261 75014 Paris France http://fondation.cartier.com/ . In 1994, the Fondation Cartier moved, exchanging Jouy-en-Josas near Versailles for the boulevard Raspail in the heart of Paris. Its new premises were designed by Jean Nouvel, an architect celebrated in France and throughout the world for the unique way in which he “dematerializes” architectural structure. He also famously designed the Institut du Monde Arabe (1987) and the Musée du Quai Branly (2006), both in Paris. For the external façade, he designed a glass screen running parallel to the boulevard Raspail that would prolong the boulevard’s perspective. Behind this transparent wall, a cedar of Lebanon planted by Chateaubriand in 1823 emerges from a monumental flower pot clad with multi-colored mosaics, a witty creation by the Italian designer Alessandro Mendini. Above the entrance to the building rises a wall of plants commissioned in 1998 from Patrick Blanc, a specialist in tropical botany and the creator of this innovative design. photo: Patrick Gries . House and studio Ozenfant Address Avenue Reille 53 75014 Paris France . The house and studio in Paris for Le Corbusier's friend the painter Ozenfant is an early example of 'minimal' architecture, a prototype of the Domino house and a manifestation of some of the principles which Le Corbusier was to set out in his famous 'five points.' It possessed a geometrical clarity inside and out which has since been lost with the elimination of the north-light roof and its replacement by a flat one. . Project is not public! . Villa la Roche Address Square du Docteur-Blanche 10 75016 Paris France http://www.fondationlecorbusier.asso.fr/ . Villa La Roche was built as a home for Raoul La Roche, a Swiss banker and collector of avant-garde art. Among other things, the house would serve as a private gallery to display La Roche's extensive art collection. Built in a private Paris courtyard, the house had major constraints imposed by the site and its zoning restrictions, including a north orientation, existing trees and height and boundary limitations. Inside the building, to display the art, an ‘architectural promenade’ was made, a theme inspired by Le Corbusier's visit to the Acropolis in 1911 and repeated most strikingly in his Carpenter centre for the Visual Arts nearly forty years later. The promenade goes up and down staircases, leads you through tight spaces, in-between balconies, open surveys, down ramps and into a beautifully lit library. This idea of a spatial sequence was re-invented by many modern architects, after Le Corbusier. . Project is public! . Mitterrand sprinkled Paris with bold landmarks, from Pei's glass pyramid at the Louvre to Dominique Perrault's National Library. Georges Pompidou built the colorful machinelike museum. Like its predecessors, Chirac’s new Quai Branly has stirred considerable resentment. Defiant, mysterious and wildly eccentric, it is not an easy building to love. Its jumble of different structures, set in a lush green garden on the bank of the Seine in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, hardly conforms to notions of Parisian monumental elegance. Yet, Jean Nouvel's design creates a kaleidoscopic montage of urban impressions. And once you give yourself over to the experience, you may find it the greatest monument to French popular culture since the Pompidou. The building combines angular glass walls with futuristic cubes of bright color and outside, a green wall of thick vegetation, suggestive of a forest or a jungle. An enormous curved glass wall shields the garden from cars roaring by. An urban oasis. photo: © musée du quai Branly - Nicolas Borel . Project is public! . . . . . .
