Welcome to ILLUMINATE 2014
Letter from the Director
Dear ILLUMINATES,
Core Staff
Welcome to the Illuminate family. You
are now a cherished member of a
global conscious cinema movement
– one from which a “critical mass” or
shift in consciousness will one day be
reached.

Thanks to the likes of Oprah
Winfrey, Deepak Chopra, MD, and
Eckhart Tolle, yogis, scientists, and
philosophers, the notion of elevated
existence has gained momentum in
Western civilization. But as I once
heard Dara Marks say, “there’s little
evidence that we grow and evolve just because it’s a good idea.” We grow
either because we are compelled to survive or because we are inspired by
possibility.
Possibility – whether in the form of abundance, love, happiness, health or
enlightenment – is an innate part of storytelling, and for this reason, I have
chosen film as a vehicle for making meaning of our existence and elevating
human consciousness.
I invite you to relate courageously with each film - to the characters, their
defects, their struggles, their victories and their lessons. It is here that the
light of new consciousness is born. The movies are there not just to watch,
but to experience. Expand your comfort zone and allow them to usher you
forward.
Launching a festival is challenging, often maddening and inextricably fun.
Launching a festival dedicated to the evolution of our collective mind, body
and spirit is a journey unto itself and rewarding in ways I can’t explain.
I believe in giving credit where it is due, and, with that said, ILLUMINATE
could not have materialized without the generous support of our Founding
Circle Members - Bill Stankey, Daryl Kling and Lewis Guthrie, Tony Wolpert,
and Denise Wolpert – each of whom took a great leap of faith.
Last, but far from least, I am eternally grateful to the ILLUMINATE Dream
Team, the incredible beings who put this Festival together. I couldn’t be
happier or luckier to have you all on this team and in my life. Thank you
for your unwavering dedication, conscious presence, and support of this
grand mission. I love you all.
Yours in oneness,
Danette Wolpert

Death Makes Life Possible WORLD PREMIERE
With Post-Screening Conversation with Deepak Chopra, MD and Marilyn Schlitz, PhD
Director: Mark Krigbaum • Documentary Feature • USA • 2014 • 63 min
Death Makes Life Possible takes the viewer on a beautiful and ground-breaking journey through
one of life’s most taboo topics: death. A game-changer for anyone confronting issues of mortality our own or others - the film presents compelling (and comforting) ideas on the mysteries of death,
backed by scientific research and captivating stories from scholars, health professionals, spiritual
teachers, scientists, children and those who have had near-death experiences. This film helps you
consider the proposition that death could be the best thing in life.
Immediately after the film, Deepak Chopra, MD and Marilyn Schlitz, PhD will join us on-stage to discuss
how to “evolve” our ideas around death. The luminaries suggest a veritable paradigm shift in cultural
conditioning of this significant transition, suggesting that there is a better way to “do” death.

When My Sorrow Died: The Legend of Armen Ra & the Theremin ARIZONA PREMIERE
With Sound Journey Performance by Armen Ra
Director: Robert Nazar Arjoyan • Documentary Feature • USA • 2014 • 85 min
The mesmerizing style of Persian-Armenian theremin virtuoso Armen Ra, has garnered the admiration
of fans on multiple continents. Filmmaker Robert Nazar Arjoyan chronicles Armen’s day-to-day life,
transporting us through Armen’s earliest years as a child in Iran, to his wild time modeling and tearing
up the New York drag scene, to his recovery from alcohol addiction. Along the way, we witness his
triumphant transcendence into a world-renowned master of the theremin, the only instrument played
without physically touching it, but rather through the vibrational interplay of human hands with its
unique sensory detectors. The complex seven-octave theremin is extremely difficult to play, much less
to master, and for that reason, it is no longer being made. Armen Ra’s mastery of this other-worldly
instrument qualifies him as one of the finest theremin players in the world today. And this film, a true
sensory immersion, is also in a class all its own.
SPOTLIGHT
Sat, May 31st 7:00pm
Mary D. Fisher Theater
Immediately following the film, the legendary Armen Ra will be performing live in an exclusive
sound journey to demonstrate the healing power and hauntingly beautiful operatic sound of
the theremin. Known for both his exceptional artistry and his eccentric theatrical appeal, Ra
has performed in esteemed venues including the United Nations and Lincoln Center, and has appeared
on CNN, HBO, MTV and in Vogue, The New York Times, The Village Voice, Rolling Stone and Glamour.
Experience Armen Ra live and in person – you will be wowed by what you hear and feel.

Director: Leah Warshawski
Documentary Feature • USA/Rwanda • 2013 • 58 min
Fri, May 30th 5:15pm • Mary D. Fisher Theater
Set amongst the hills of Rwanda, Finding Hillywood chronicles one man’s
road to forgiveness, his effort to heal his country and the realization that
we all must one day face our past in order to transcend it. A unique and
endearing story about pioneers who bring local films to rural communities

Director: Mark Devries • Documentary Feature • USA • 2013 • 90 min
Fri, May 30th 12:15pm • Mary D. Fisher Theater
A young man investigating the underworld of “factory farming” soon
discovers a growing political and intellectual movement that considers
animals as important as humans. Speciesism, deemed a paradigm-busting
film by the Huffington Post, provides a fresh, compelling argument
(perhaps the most compelling argument yet) on the controversial idea of
equality of species and how the collective global consciousness could very
well be shifting to include all life forms as sacred. You will never look at
animals the same way again. Especially humans.

After a job interview gone wrong, Lulu sets sail, leaving her husband and

done. Along the way, our discreet heroine will have three key encounters:
with an ex-con being protected by his brothers, an old woman who is
literally being bored to death, and an unhappy waitress who’s being
mistreated by her boss. The surprise of love, the comfort of female intimacy,
and a case of misplaced compassion are the three movements in this fugue
which help Lulu find an old acquaintance she has lost touch with: herself.

May I Be Frank RETROSPECTIVE
The Dalai Lama makes a request of Nicky Vreeland that will change the
course of his life. If you recognize the name “Vreeland,” you would be
correct: he is the grandson of fashion icon and Vogue editor-in-chief, Diana
Vreeland. Why is Nicky, once on the path of becoming a high-powered
photographer, now in this position? This enthralling documentary grants
us intimate access to Nicky and his extraordinary spiritual journey. We see
behind the curtain of Tibetan Buddhism and inside the heart and mind of
a man whose every step takes him further away from one seemingly preordained life and toward another.
A true story of personal transformation captured on film. Addicted to drugs
and morbidly obese, Frank Ferrante is a 54-year-old, 290-pound SicilianAmerican from Brooklyn with Hepatitis C on the lookout for a quick fix.
He hands his life over to the twenty-something owners of Café Gratitude,
a raw-vegan restaurant in San Francisco, who commit to helping him
change his ways over the course of 42 days, and in the process give him a
second chance at finding love, fulfillment and happiness. May I Be Frank is
a heartwarming story of redemption through sex, drugs and a miraculous
mind-body-and-spirit transformation.
Q&A with directors Guido Santi and Tina Mascara
Immediately following the film, join Frank Ferrante in a humorous and
heartfelt Q & A session. At once a ‘macho man’ and a deeply sweet soul,
Frank reveals how this 42-day experience changed his life, and how
becoming a well-known “phenomenon” in the public eye allowed him to
touch countless lives.

2013 • 95 min
Fri, May 30th 2:45pm • Mary D. Fisher Theater
Australia’s submission for the Academy Award and Best Narrative Feature
at Tribeca, The Rocket is a triumphant tale about challenging one’s place
in the family order. Ahlo is the 10-year-old surviving twin of a difficult birth,
believed to be cursed and ostracized by his superstitious community. His
only hope of redemption is the Rocket Festival: a riotous, and dangerous,
annual competition where huge bamboo rockets are set off to provoke the
rain gods. The Rocket is an example of conscious storytelling at its finest.
