night, when 4000 watts of
H.I.D. lighting causes the
nearby swimming pool to
reflect a mirror image of
the greenhouse!
Key environmental variables:
1. Air temperature should be 70 to 90 degrees F.
2. Root temperature should be 68 to 80 degrees F.
3. Carbon dioxide levels should be from 300 to 1500 PPM
(Parts Per Million)
4. Relative humidity should be from 40 to 60%.
5. Nutrient strength should be 1000 to 1800 PPM
(half for seedlings )
6. Nutrient solution pH should be from 5.8 to 6.8.
7. Oxygen must be available to the roots.
8. Air exchange should be at least every 3 minutes (unless Co
2 is added).
9. Light requirements vary greatly from 500 to 5000 Foot candles (Fast
growing plants need 2000+ F.C.)
These are very general guidelines to consider when designing your garden.
More specific information is available from various sources, including the
State Department of Food & Agriculture, University of California
Agriculture research paper, and your County Agricultural Extension Agent.

The exhaust fan is mounted near the apex of the gr
eenhouse roof. Both
connect to a climate controller, mounted on the back wall.
The CO 2 generator is hooked up to a natural gas line, and is controlled
by a digital meter and controller unit. The master controller integrates all
other controllers into a “master panel”.
Supplemental lighting for winter
is provided by 4 Metal Halide
horizontal fixtures, 1000 watts
each. Summer is when the air
conditioner mounted at the back
wall becomes useful. Submersible
Thermostatic Heaters are located
in each reservoir and maintain the
nutrient solution at a minimum of
70 degrees F.

2 Hydromax 2000 nutrient reservoirs each supply nutrient to vegetable
vine crops in 6 Hydrotrays., using Rockwool slabs in a top irrigation system. There is also a complete
Hydromax 2000 flood &
drain system, for leafy salad
greens, and a Hydromax 1000
system, to start young seedlings.
Each reservoir has it’s own
submersible pump & timer
which irrigates for 15 minutes,
every hour, during the daylight
cycle. The timer is a special
type known as a
“chronometric sequence timer”
and has a photosensor to
override manual settings so
that watering is NEVER done
during the night cycle.

Tom Cruise uses Hydroponics?
The film is set many decades in the future and so almost all
food and plants are grown hydroponically. The kitchen set set
features Mini-Hydromax Aeroponic units growing herbs in the
glass enclosed “herb-arium” area. The tube systems actually
grew the plants shown, they are working systems designed and
built by the fantastic crew that Steven Spielberg assembled to
produce this film. The Greens Coordinator, Dan Gillooly sent us
the testimonial letterhead in appreciation of our help as a supplier for the project. All plants were grown with Xtra-Edge liquid Hydroponic nutrient formula. We also supplied technical
guidance and other set dressing for the Hydroponic Store Scene.

Hydromax Top Feeding Manifold Kit
This unit is based on the Raindrip 8 outlet Hydrant. Each outlet can be split
with a “T” fitting to become 16 outlets.We include a barbed 1/2” fitting that
enables attaching the Raindrip manifold to standard submersible pumps with
1/2” outlet nozzles.
NOTE: The “Drip” emitters are NOT used with pumps, they need 15PSI +
water pressure.
Why Top Feeding?
That is a ver y common question. There are two main situations where watering from the top are used. The first situation is where the growing media is so
tall that it cannot be flooded to within 1.5” of the top of the rockwool. The
second situation is where there are large plants being grown that would
require excessive volumes of water to flood the containers.
The advantage of Top Feeding compared to Flood & Drain Feeding (Ebb &
Flow) is that the nutrient salts are constantly being pushed through the growing media. The water from each irrigation cycle picks up salts on it’s way to
the bottom of the media and washes them back into the reservoir tank. The
drawback to Top Feeding is that are more things to go wrong. One example
would be a top feeding stake coming loose and that line could be spilling
water on the floor each time the pump comes on, until the tank is empty.

0.5-2-10 Har d Water Micro with 0.5% Fulvic acid stimulant. Super
Chelate chemistry with 0.5% Magnesium EDTA. This formula assumes
that the tap water has enough Calcium already. (Raw water measuring

Reference Facts about Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) Enrichment

Carbon Dioxide gas occupies 8.7 Cubic Feet / per pound at 68
F (20 O C).
Compressed CO 2 is sold by weight, the tank pressure will vary according
to the temperature.
At the discharge rate of one Cubic Foot / per hour on the flowmeter, a
20lb CO 2 tank will last 174 hours. Using that amount, 12 hours per day
the tank would last 14 days - with one half day reserve.
One gallon of Propane (LPG) will burn to create 12.7 pounds of
CO 2.

system quickly pays for itself by providing
a method of accurately and automatically
controlling CO2 producing equipment to
ensure exacting and consistent levels. This
CDMC carbon dioxide monitor controller
packages includes one CO2 sensor #6000
and one CDDS-2 digital sequencer with
event programmer and photo sensor. The
monitor samples atmosphere once each second and displays current CO2 values in
parts per million (ppm) on it's display
screen. These values are transmitted via linear millivolt signals to the Digital Event
Sequencer's logic translating circuits. The
sequencer then interprets these signals and
functions it's CO2 equipment outlet

built in photo sensor automatically defeats

Lack of climate contr ol is the number one reason for poor yield.
Remember that high air temperature and low humidity cause spider mite
populations to go out of control!
It is often a good idea to have 2 exhaust fans. A lar
ge fan capable of
exhausting all the air in about one minute is used on a thermostat. A very
small fan is used to run constantly, or on a timer, for night time humidity
control.

Why Negative Air Ionization ?
Air nor mally has some positive charged ions and some negative charged
ions. The accepted “normal” range is quoted at 1000 to 2000 ions per
cubic centimeter. They tend to occur in a ratio of 5 positive to every 4
negative. Hot dry air has lsee negative ions. Air friction of being passed
over fan blades causes both an increase in the positive ions and decrease
in negative iona. Dust particles are positively charged. Large amounts of
negative ions will cause the dust particles to clump together and drop out
the air.
Scientist at the University of California grew Barley, Oats, Lettuce and
Peas in an environment of only 60 positive and 60 negative ions per CC.
The results were stunted and diseased plants. When the experiment was
repeated using 2000 to 4000 ions per cubic centimeter (double the
“natural” amount) the results were plant growth rates accelerating
beyond normal.
