Beaches
Every beach on Maui has its own character, its own sand, its own kind
of waves. And every beach is open, free of charge—even if, at first
glance, it seems to be surrounded by buildings. The guarantee of free
beach access is a bedrock fixture of Hawai‘i state law. Parking can be
a bit of a game, but it’s a game Maui wants you to win! Go out and find
the beaches you haven’t yet discovered. Take a look at page 10 for
descriptions of our favorites, and our maps on pages 12-16 for
locations. Natural beauty is the best free attraction on Earth!
Parks
Haleakala National Park
Your Maui vacation will not be complete without a visit to Haleakala
National Park. The 10,000 ft. inactive (not dormant) volcano crater
makes for an other-worldly experience, and offers the opportunity
to see the work of Madame Pele (the volcano goddess) first hand.
The Park offers informative (and sheltered) viewpoints at the summit
(open 5:30am-3:00pm daily), as well as at the park headquarters
(open 7:00am-3:45pm). Stop at Hosmer Grove and walk the easy
loop trail. Park admission is $10 per car, good for three days at both
the summit and the Kipahulu area of the Park near Hana. Call 808572-4400 for a 24-hour hotline for program schedules (the Park
provides a number of guided nature hikes). www.nps.gov/hale.
I‘ao Valley State Monument
I‘ao Valley vibrates with mana (spirit). For centuries the ali‘i (chiefs)
made this valley kapu (forbidden), and used it for scared purposes.
Walk the tropical garden, then along the banks of Maui’s largest
natural watercourse. Jump in and soak it up! Be sure to stop at
Kepaniwai Park, with its cultural exhibits, for insights into Hawaiian
history. Parking is $5 per car and both parks are open daily from
7am to 7pm 808-984-8109; www.hawaiistateparks.org/parks/maui.
Kapalua Resort
Though technically not a park, the Kapalua Resort has hiking trails
that are free of charge as a self-guided experience. Access to many
of the trails is via a free resort shuttle. Download the Kapalua Resort
Trails Map at http://kapalua.com/activities/hiking-trails. 808-6654386.
Museums
Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum
Located next to Hawai‘i’s only remaining sugar factory, in the historic
plantation town of Pu‘unene, the Sugar Museum is a wonderful
repository of information and exhibits about one of the most
significant and influential periods in Maui’s history. Admission is $7
for adults, $5 for seniors, and $2 for children ages 6-12. Children 5
and under are free. Open Sunday-Saturday, 9:30am-4pm 808-8718058; www.sugarmuseum.com.
Bailey House in Wailuku
Home of the Maui Historical Society, the museum is a well-preserved
relic of missionary days with interesting artifacts from the days of old
Hawai‘i. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $2 for children
ages 7-12. Children 6 and under are free. Open Monday-Saturday,
10am-4pm 808-244-3326; www.mauimuseum.org.
Baldwin Home Museum in Lahaina
This early 19th century residence of missionary Dr. Dwight Baldwin,
whose offspring have had such a powerful influence on Maui history,
makes a good starting place for a walking tour of Lahaina town. The
Baldwin Home is the oldest house on the island of Maui. Admission
is $7 per person ($5 for seniors) and includes entrance to both the
Baldwin Home & Wo Hing museums. Children 12 and under are free.
Open daily 10am-4pm 808-661-3262; www.lahainarestoration.org.
Hana Cultural Center & Museum
With its quaint old courthouse and replica native living compound,
the center is a wealth of information about old Hana town. Admission
is free (a $3 per person donation is requested). Open Monday-Friday
10am-4pm 808-248-8622; www.hanaculturalcenter.org.
History Room at Maui’s Winery
(a.k.a. Tedeschi Vineyards)
One of Maui’s least-known museums is better than free—it comes
with wine! Displays show the history of Ulupalakua Ranch, with
interesting information on topics such as the paniolo (Hawaiian
cowboy), King Kalakaua (known as the “Merrie Monarch,” and after
whom the annual hula festival in Hilo is named), and Maui’s native
forests. The winery’s tasting bar, 17 feet long and made of solid
mango wood, is right nearby. 877-878-6058; www.mauiwine.com.
Ka‘anapali Historical Trail
Ka‘anapali is rich with history and legends and the Ka‘anapali Beach
Resort offers a self-guided tour highlighting the area’s storied past.
At no charge, this “outdoor museum” is not to be missed. The
Ka‘anapali Historical Trail tour takes approximately two hours to
complete. Visitors can contact 808-661-3271 for information on
where to pick up the free brochure and map. www.kaanapaliresort.
com/WhatToDo/HistoricalTrail.
Nature Museum at Hawai‘i Nature Center
Located within I‘ao Valley State Monument, this interactive museum
is creatively kid oriented. Containing more than 30 museum exhibits
and a personal introduction to the Hawaiian rainforest, the museum
is guaranteed to make your visit to Maui special and memorable.
Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children. Open daily 10am-4pm
808-244-6500; www.hawaiinaturecenter.org.
Whalers Village Museum
This museum, located within the Whalers Village Shopping Center
in Ka‘anapali, captures the drama of Lahaina’s short-lived whaling
industry. It also contains a prized collection of 19th century
scrimshaw—pictures finely carved on whale teeth and bone, then
rubbed with ink to bring out the design. Open daily 10am-6pm
Adults $3, Seniors $2, Children $1 (6yrs-18yrs), and children 5 yrs.
and under are free. 808-661-5992; www.whalersvillage.com.
Wo Hing Museum in Lahaina
Chinese history in Lahaina predates the whalers and missionaries.
In 1912, using private donations, the Wo Hing Society built a twostory temple on Front Street. The building served as a fraternal and
social meeting hall. It housed a sacred altar room on the second
floor for religious ceremonies. Fascinating artifacts are displayed and
explained throughout the museum. Admission is $7 ($5 for seniors)
and includes both Wo Hing & Baldwin Home museums; children 12
and under are free. Open Saturday-Thursday 10am-4pm; Friday
1-8pm 808-661-3262; www.lahainarestoration.org.
Art Exhibits
Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center
Located Upcountry just below historic Makawao town, “The Hui”
offers exhibits on the main floor of an elegant antique mansion, as
well as studios and classes in many art forms and special events.
Open Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm Free admission. 808-572-6560;
www.huinoeau.com.
Schaefer International Gallery
Located at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (“The MACC”) in Kahului,
the Schaefer Gallery curates fascinating exhibits several times per
year. The MACC itself offers an ever-changing season of performing
arts events (generally not free), and hosts the Maui Film Festival (808572-3456). The gallery has free admission, and is open WednesdaySaturday 11am-5pm, and before shows and during intermissions.

Turnbull Studios & Sculpture Garden
You’ll experience the unexpected at this working gallery, located
in Kahakuloa—approximately 15 minutes from Wailuku on the
panoramic Highway 340. Master carvers Bruce, Steve and Christine
Turnbull showcase their array of spectacular sculptures at this outof-the-way, but definitely worth the trip, art mecca. Open MondayFriday 10am-5pm, and by appointment. 808-244-0101 or 877-2669838; www.turnbullstudios.org.
Botanical Gardens
& Earthly Wonders
Ali‘i Kula Lavender
Home to approximately 55,000 lavender plants and 45 different
varieties of lavender, olive trees, hydrangea and protea blooming
on 10.5 acres, this working farm offers five walking tours per day
($12 per person plus tax), or you can explore the property on your
own with their self-guided map (general admission is $3, children
12 and under are free). Open daily 9am-4pm 808-878-3004; www.
aliikulalavender.com.
Kahanu Garden
When you visit Hana, plan ahead for a tour of this garden, which
is only one of five gardens in the country to be chartered by the
U.S. Congress as a National Tropical Botanical Garden. See the
world's largest collection of breadfruit trees and the remarkable
ethnobotanical plants that were brought to Maui in ancient voyaging
canoes. The acreage also includes a site of extreme importance in
Hawaiian history—Pi‘ilanihale Heiau, the largest ancient monument
in the state, and the former seat of power for the legendary King
Pi‘ilani. Self-guided tours are available Monday-Saturday 9am2pm, and cost $10 for adults. Guided tours are available only on
Saturdays at 10am, and cost $25 for adults. Both types of tours are
free for children 12 and under. 808-248-8912; www.ntbg.org.
Kula Botanical Garden
Located on the slope of Haleakala, the garden encompasses eight
acres of colorful and unique plants, amazing rock formations, a
covered bridge, waterfalls, koi pond, aviary, and carved tiki exhibit.
Open daily 9am-4pm. Admission is $10 for adults and $3 for children
ages 6-12. Children 5 and under are free; 808-878-1715. www.

crops of the tropics, and offers visitors an instructional tram tour.

and extensive grounds is free. Open daily 9am-5pm 808-244-7643;

BEST: BEACHFRONT DINING • page 24
You can’t get much closer to the ocean than the charming
indoor and outdoor island setting of PACIFIC’O. The
Asian-Pacific cuisine is every bit as stellar as the beachfront
ambiance. Masterful Executive Chef James McDonald is
one of Hawai‘i’s premier culinary artists. His deft touch and
celebrated creations are renowned. Don’t be surprised to see
a local fisherman walking through the restaurant with a fresh
catch! Pacific’O and sister restaurant I’o both benefit from
their own upcountry Maui farm where the freshest produce
and fruits are grown and harvested for their menus. Lunch and
Dinner daily. Reservations suggested for dinner.
BEST: BURGER • page 41
This family-friendly fifties inspired diner has been voted the “Best
Burger on Maui” nine years running! Father and son owners
Steve and Sean Corpuel use only the freshest ingredients for
their thirteen specialty burgers, including buns baked daily by a
local bakery, 100% Certified Angus Beef hand-pressed and never
frozen, and the freshest produce. Most of all they make every
burger like they made the first one over 20 years ago! Located
across from the Lahaina Harbor, Cool Cat offers the freshest
fish on Maui, and a full lunch and dinner menu with sandwiches,
salads, delicious baby back ribs, steaks, and vegetarian
selections. Cool Cat has a full bar, hosts live music nightly, and
the arcade provides full entertainment for the young and the
young at heart. Welcome to Maui’s COOL CAT CAFE!
BEST: FARM TO TABLE DINING • page 25
Executive Chef James McDonald (also of pacific‘O fame)
imbues his New Pacific Cuisine with European and
Mediterranean influences, but his menu relies heavily on
procuring the finest offerings from local farmers, ranchers,
and fishermen. In fact, I‘O RESTAURANT is so serious about
the Farm to Table concept, that they own their own farm
here on Maui! Produce is being picked around the clock, and
fishermen arrive daily to deliver their catch. Paired with Chef
James’ deliciously inventive creations is an indoor-outdoor
ambiance both chic and casual. Open for dinner daily and
reservations are recommended.

LONGHI’S is one of those special restaurants in the world that
almost defies description. There are two on Maui: in Lahaina,
open air with ocean views (breakfast, lunch, dinner); and at
The Shops at Wailea, open air and impeccably designed. A
wide array of choices from seafood appetizers to pastas, fresh
Maine lobster, 14 oz. Prime New York steaks, fresh fish and
an abundance of fresh salads and vegetables. Using local,
organic ingredients whenever possible, Longhi’s was created
by a man who loves to eat! The ambiance is exceptional, and
dress is casually elegant.
BEST: FRESH FISH • page 31
Specializing in the freshest seafood and prime steaks, HULA
GRILL & BAREFOOT BAR has won accolades for chefpartner Peter Merriman’s Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine. A picture
postcard setting on Ka‘anapali Beach, this outdoor bistro and
open-air dinner house is reminiscent of Hawai‘i’s gracious
plantation era. Dishes of note: scallop and lobster potstickers,
spicy roasted Tandoori style fresh fish, prime New York steak
and coconut seafood chowder. The boisterous Barefoot Bar &
Cafe, with its thatched palapas overhead and sand between
the toes, serves up live entertainment daily. Located in Whalers
Village Shopping Center on Ka‘anapali Beach.
BEST: HAWAIIAN AMBIANCE • page 27
The legend of Duke Kahanamoku is alive and well on the Maui

and a glimpse into the life of the restaurant’s namesake, Duke.
Overlooking beautiful Ka‘anapali North Beach, the Aloha spirit
and Hawaiian culture are felt throughout. Fantastic service and

BEST: OCEAN TAVERN • page 33
Interested in dining on the water? Famed Maui chef Mark Ellman
snatched up this incredible spot in 2005 and created Mala, an
Ocean Tavern, smack dab at water's edge in Lahaina. MALA
features an inventive array of Mediterranean and Pacific Rim
inspired dishes; many are meant to be shared. The freshest of
seafood, meat, poultry, and vegetables are crafted to please
most any palate. Be sure to leave room for the iconic Caramel
Miranda—Chef Ellman’s signature dessert that will make you roll
your eyes heavenward. Mala is a family affair run by Chef Ellman
and his wife Judy, with daughters Ariana and Michelle managing
and bartending. Open daily for lunch, Happy Hour, and dinner,
with brunch Sat. and Sun. If you happen to be in Wailea, sister
restaurant, Mala Wailea, is open daily for breakfast, lunch,

Do you practice aloha?
Here’s your chance to get a
better understanding of the
aloha spirit, live it and share
it with others. In famed chef
Mark Ellman’s book “Practice
Aloha, Secrets to Living Life
Hawaiian Style,” he and coauthor Barbara Santos feature
150 stories, songs, and
recipes from people who share
their personal experiences on
what it means to live life with
aloha. The stories come from
a diverse collection of people such as Fleetwood Mac’s Mick
Fleetwood and Hawai‘i Governor Neil Abercrombie, and the
forward is written by Dr. Wayne Dyer. Available thru Amazon as

famous chefs, D.K. Kodama, Maui Fish & Pasta strives to
incorporate as much locally grown product as possible on the
new menu created by Executive Chef and Partner Ivan Pahk.
Their goal is to deliver the freshest ingredients available to their

BEST: SEAFOOD • page 26
Who says culinary lightning doesn’t strike twice? Famed Chef
Mark Ellman and his wife Judy, the magicians behind the everpopular MALA restaurant, have created their newest dining
sensation right next door. Honu SEAFOOD & PIZZA, like
sister restaurant MALA, is situated right on the ocean with
spectacular sunsets and surfing turtles. Chef Mark and Judy
have a well-deserved reputation for creating what is missing
on our little slice of Paradise, and Honu is no exception. Fresh
foods from local farmers, the freshest seafood from where we
live and eclectic recipes found nowhere else. You may feel like
you are in the heart of San Francisco or maybe New York, but
no, you are at a Mark and Judy Ellman restaurant at ocean’s

BEST: SHAVE ICE • page 35
There’s no shortage of shave ice on Maui. But, if you’re
planning on having one, why not have THE BEST? As they
say at Ululani’s, “All Shave Ice Is NOT Created Equal.” This
is a must-do when in Hawai‘i. Be sure to stop into one
of ULULANI’S HAWAIIAN SHAVE ICE’S four locations
island-wide. Powdery soft, and if you’re trying a topical flavor,
it literally tastes like biting into ice-cold tropical fruit! You’ll
find yourself wanting to come back time and time again, so
make sure you grab a punch card on your first visit. From the
superior quality to the friendliest staff around, everything they
do is special. Their signature recipes use only the highest
quality ingredients including premium fruit purees, fruit juices,
extracts, and time-tested concentrates. 100% of their syrups
are made with pure cane sugar, and they make their own ice
using filtered/purified Maui mountain water. Don’t forget the
Maui-made Roselani ice cream on the bottom.

BEST: SUBMARINE • page 81
It’s a rare opportunity to experience the breathtaking beauty
of undersea Maui in an actual submarine. Your adventure
begins at Lahaina Harbor, as you are shuttled to the 65-foot,
48-passenger ATLANTIS SUBMARINE. Their spacious,
air-conditioned cabin provides large viewing portals for each
seat with ample head and leg room. Down, down, down to
depths of more than 100 feet, this quiet, battery-powered sub
descends into a natural habitat of tropical fish and creatures of
all shapes, sizes and colors. Tour includes an underwater visit
to view the sunken replica of the whaling ship Carthaginian.
BEST: TRAIN RIDE • page 78
All aboard for a leisurely old-fashioned train ride along West
Maui’s scenic coastline! The coaches of the nostalgic Sugar

up your whole day, so you can easily fit the Sugar Cane Train
into your vacation. Great for kids AND adults!
BEST: UNDERWATER VIEWING • page 84
For the best dive show in town, grab a seat in the underwater
cabin of the semi-submersible REEFDANCER. The boat

window seat! Several trips offered daily. Great fun for all ages.

BEST: SCRIMSHAW • page 96
Back in the boisterous 1800s, Old Lahaina Town was a
favorite port to Yankee whalers who introduced the fine art
of scrimshaw. Today these precious carvings are created by
modern artists, and are rendered on fossil ivory (since concern
for the endangerment of species is foremost on their minds).
LAHAINA SCRIMSHAW is world famous for their superb
collection! Some pieces cost only a few dollars and some are
worth thousands. Gifts that last a lifetime.

Timeless Treasures
S
ince the 1820’s, when Lahaina was a haven to Yankee whalers, people
have treasured the fabulous works of scrimshaw. Modern artists,
concerned for the endangered species, use fossil ivory to create their classic
works. Today they continue to follow a tradition as old as man’s love
for the sea. Now you, too, can discover the irresistible qualities of this
unique art form. At world-famous Lahaina Scrimshaw, you’ll see the finest
examples of the ancient mariners’ art.
For gifts of just a few dollars to some worth many thousands,
we invite you to own a legacy of the ages.
