Line Guide - The Bittern Line
S ES BLE LKS UD A A CL ET W 6 IN TIM DEDy 201 IL UI il Ma RA D G Unt AN Bittern & Wherry Lines A local area and railways guide Travel to Norwich, Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth, Cromer, Sheringham and beyond 1 The Bittern Line The Bittern Line is named after an East Anglian conservation success. Like its namesake, the line flies across the landscape, from the booming city of Norwich to the coastal delights of Cromer and Sheringham, and now does it hourly every day, all year! En route are North Walsham, with new station facilities, and Hoveton & Wroxham, Gateway to the Broads - Britain’s Magical Waterland! Don’t stop at Sheringham: visit the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty via the North Norfolk Railway and Coasthopper bus! The Wherry Lines Named after the famous Broads trading boats, the Wherry Lines connect the Fine City of Norwich with the lively and welcoming seaside resorts of Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth - steeped in culture and history as much as candy floss! En route are the wide open spaces of the Broads marshes, where bird and plant life create awe-inspiring spectacles. The villages on the way provide friendly hospitality and plenty of heritage too. There’s a map on the centre pages and timetables are at the back! Ranger Tickets These great-value tickets give a day’s unlimited travel on either the Bittern Line or the Wherry Lines, so you can hop on and off in different places. The Bittern Line Ranger is valid after 08:15, Mon-Fri, all day otherwise; the Wherry Lines Ranger after 08:45 Mon-Fri, all day otherwise. There are senior and family discounts (no railcard required!). The Bittern Line Ranger even includes the Coasthopper bus from Sheringham to Hunstanton! Don’t forget the Anglia Plus ticket, which gives you unlimited off-peak travel for a day across most of Norfolk and Suffolk on Abellio Greater Anglia services. 2 New for 2015 Our best timetables ever! With the Bittern Line now running hourly every day all year, the focus moves to the Wherry Lines, where the Norwich to Lowestoft service gets a boost. For the summer months, there’s an hourly service on the route every day, including Sunday! Don’t forget there’s now an improved service at Gunton and Roughton Road on the Bittern Line too, useful for people in Southrepps, Thorpe Market, and the south of Cromer, as well as anyone wanting easy access to some beautiful countryside! Easier access to the coast With the extension of the Norfolk Coast Path from Weybourne east to Sea Palling, walkers can now enjoy much better access to the coast of north-east Norfolk, with easy train links at Sheringham, West Runton and Cromer too. The Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership (CRP) is co-operating with Norfolk Trails in the Walking Festival in October. Easier access to tickets on the Bittern Line Following on from the success of the new ticket vending machine at North Walsham, one has been installed at Cromer, aided by funding from Norfolk County Council, Norfolk Homes, Cromer Town Council, the Designated Community Rail Development Fund (Department for Transport and Network Rail), and the Bittern Line CRP. Whilst not taking cash, the new machines accept credit and debit cards, and allow tickets booked online to be collected. This means you can collect tickets closer to home and the conductor can get to everybody on the train. Don’t worry, as before, if you board at an unstaffed station, you can still buy your ticket on the train, but now there’s less pressure! 3 Tourist Information Centres Cromer Louden Road, 01263 512 497 Great Yarmouth (closed winter weekends) Marine Parade, 01493 846 346 Holt (seasonal) Market Place, 01263 713 100 Hoveton (seasonal) Station Road, 01603 756 097 Lowestoft East Point Pavilion, 01502 533 600 Mundesley Station Road, 01263 721 070 North Walsham Council Offices, New Rd. 01692 404 114 Norwich The Forum, 01603 213 999 Sheringham (seasonal) Station Approach, 01263 824 329 Wells (seasonal) Staithe Street, 01328 710 885 Discount Offers * Many attractions mentioned in this guide have agreed to offer discounts to people who have arrived by train. Bus links, such as the Coasthopper, extend opportunities. OS Explorer map OL40 covers the Wherry Lines and the Bittern Line as far as North Walsham. Map 252 covers the rest, and maps 251 and 250 extend along the coast. Our Sunday Guided Walks These walks are FREE to rail ticket holders; those arriving by car will be asked to pay a £5 fee! Bring your own refreshments, as not all walks reach a pub or café at lunchtime. Walks are designed for those coming from Norwich. People coming from elsewhere are of course welcome, but do check train times carefully! We aim to be back in Norwich before 17.00. The distances given are approximate. Whilst every effort is made to ensure the programme is as advertised, the Partnerships cannot accept responsibility for any changes or cancellations. If you are in any doubt, please ring Natural Surroundings on 01263 711 091. Whilst the volunteer leaders take every care before and during the walks, all participation is at the walker’s own risk. Dogs are welcome; there is no charge for dogs on the train. However, we respectfully ask that they are kept on a short lead at all times, as the walks go through fields with livestock and nature reserves with feeding and nesting birds. Please help to maintain the Bittern and Wherry Lines’ good image with the people who live and work in the countryside. PLEASE NOTE THAT WALKS DON’T ALWAYS START AND FINISH AT THE SAME STATION! 21 June 2015 ~ Ferryland Frolics Over the Reedham Ferry, through Nogdam End and Thurlton, then over the marshes to Haddiscoe. 10.57 train from Norwich; alight Reedham, 11.16 About 7 miles Led by Graham Jones Please purchase a return ticket to Haddiscoe.
