Here’s how. On a sunny summer Saturday afternoon, my wife and toddler are
running errands. The honey-do list can
wait. My one task is to sling up a hammock and waste my life away.
Easily done, right? I even remember
where I put the hammock away last
year. It’s somewhere amid the camping
gear, which is mostly in the basement
except for a few items in the hall closet.
I learn this as I search – cleaning up as
I go. I won’t be able to relax properly

The hammock, as it turns out, is in the

So it goes, until late in the afternoon.
My urge to take it easy has become a

of reshingling the roof – do I actually
get to hang the hammock.

Why? Cally looked up into the plane tree’s

Her mother’s hospital bed had been

eyes were closed, their lids papery in
the lamplight. The last dose of morphine

she had spent thousands of dollars sagged

the overwhelming problems that we face.
Self-described as a “populist democratic treatise,” Ring’s book stresses a corporate elite has
taken hold of the political process in recent
times and urges us in a number of ways to resist this self-serving oligarchy and develop a
philosophical foundation for the much-needed
renewal of a people’s democracy, the “great
task of our time.” Drawing on his own astute
analysis and quoting from intellectuals, philosophers, statesmen, activists and visionaries
from both the historical and contemporary record, Ring is hopeful we can reclaim and safeguard the vision of democracy, liberty, equality
and solidarity; and embrace the values of compassion, dignity, peace and environmental sustainability.
There is much we can do with lifestyle changes
and green/alternative living but, most of all,
we need to question, challenge and overturn
the global corporatist order in favour of democracy and ecological sanity. Evoking our fundamental nature as heart-focused human beings,
makes a remarkably broad selection of current
foreign and independent titles available for
home viewing.

May this year, we came

“Farley’s mail brought letters from
around the world telling him how his
writing had changed their lives for the

wrote to him about Owls in the Family. And Farley replied, encouraging
them in their reading. In earlier years,
he sometimes read from his books to
children of various ages at libraries

to read a great deal, to read widely and
then to write, write, write.

Good Lovelies are a great example.
They began their career at our summer
songwriter showcase, which they won,
and performed on our stage, launching a singing career for the trio that just
keeps climbing,” she said.
By audience suggestion, last year’s goal
was to bring back a lineup of favourite performers from the past decade.
Several artists that came to the grassroots festival at the beginning have
found success. “It’s not just Shelter Val-

said Cody. “They have new music, new
albums and we celebrate that by having
them return to the festival. We could
very well see someone like Serena Ryder in future years.”
Automatically you think of the music,
but the festival is also made up of four
villages: the artists’ village, wellness village, sustainable living village and family and children’s village. The artists’
village is a long lane of individual artists of all genres. It has everything from
a gentleman who makes musical instruments right through to pottery and artwork. In the wellness and sustainability
areas you can learn techniques and experience treatments.
Some people even say their favourite
part of the festival is the food. “We call it
harvest food because we make sure that
everyone who participates is as local as
can be, that the food is as local as can be
and that it’s fresh-made, most of it on
site, if possible,” said Cody. Last year,

Summer is a very special season after our
long, cold Canadian
winters. Everyone enjoys the warmth of the
sun, the smell of the
fresh morning dew after a little rain
and the peaceful sounds of chirping
birds, tree frogs and peepers. Now, if
only someone would invite us to their
FRWWDJHWRUHOD[OD]HDURXQGVZLPHDW
and drink!
If you are lucky a friend may invite you
for a day or even a weekend to share
and enjoy their cottage lifestyle with
you. Here are a few tips to ensure a
pleasant visit and a chance for a return
invite. When visiting a friend’s cottage be on your best behaviour. What
you don’t want to do is create a lot of
work for your hosts. Simple things to
UHPHPEHUWDNHRͿ\RXUVKRHVRXWVLGH
the cottage door; jump up when it’s
time to do the dishes; bring your own
sheets and towels; bring whatever you
think you will be drinking and then
bring double that amount...and do not
take it home with you when you leave;
bring a gift for your host and their cottage – a new board game, some beach
towels, a special bottle of bubbly. They
probably have enough knick-knacks
DQGVWXͿWKDWQHHGVGXVWLQJ
And of course when away at the cottage for the weekend eating is one of
the focal points, whether it’s snacks on
WKHGRFNRUE\WKHÀUH6XQGD\EUXQFK
or a BBQ party – good food makes for
good fun and conversation. Nobody
wants to spend all day in the kitchen
when the weather is beautiful outside
and everyone else is having fun water

that you will have to bring everything

a breakfast, lunch or dinner, it doesn’t
matter. What matters is that you give

there will be any other guests invited
so you can be prepared with enough
food. And after you cook your meal offer to do the dishes and cleanup.
If you decide to bring something for
the BBQ that requires a marinade, put
LW LQ WKH PDULQDGH DW KRPH LQ D =LSloc bag and bring it with you ready to
go. Chop vegetables and have them
ready to cook, or turn them into a salad
so you spend less time in the cottage
kitchen. Put everything in a cooler
with ice packs because there may not
be enough room in the cottage fridge.
Prepare any dressings at home and
bring them in a mason jar. If you don’t
bake, then purchase something delicately delicious from your local bakery
so dessert is also taken care of.
“Food is our common ground,
a universal experience.”
²-DPHV%HDUG
Does this all sound like a ton of work?
Think of the cottage hosts and how
many times they have guests during
the summer season. They work hard for
their guests and it is nice to have that
reciprocated. Oh, and I forgot to menWLRQ²RͿHUWRGRVRPHZRUNZKLOH\RX

Summer is an ideal time
to be outdoors; however,
the warm weather brings
many irritants with it,
which can unfortunately
ruin some of the fun.
According to April Bayer-Murchison,

many natural approaches to remain
comfortable this season.

Sunblock is always recommended as the

antioxidants can also help heal the
damage that has been done to your skin.
They can be found naturally in vitamins
A, C and E. It’s wise to apply aloe vera to
soothe and hydrate the skin, especially if
you are feeling discomfort.

Argan oil is a great option to protect
your hair when spending time in the

want to repel insects so they don’t get

Rhus tox is a popular homeopathic

for poison ivy, it doesn’t actually contain
any poison ivy and it can’t give you a

You can take it orally, preventively or,
if you already have poison ivy, it will
