FIONA VAN KAMPEN WINS TOPPIX PHOTO
COMPETITION WITH A “DREAM” SHOT
Fiona van Kampen won the
annual SXM Aviation Photography Competition, Toppix,
on Friday, November 13.
Van Kampen took home the
first prize purse of $2,500 for
her winning image of a TUI
787 Dreamline airplane preparing to land at SXM Airport.
The photograph also depicts
the “Most Spectacular Landing” theme of Toppix 2015. The photographer previously lived in St. Maarten and this year she traveled from Tanzania to participate in the Toppix aviation photo
competition. The contest started on November 6 and concluded
at midnight November 12. Judging was held on November 13,
followed on Friday afternoon with the announcement of the winners and the prize-giving ceremony. According to Robert Cijntje,
coordinator of the event, about 35 photographers were expected to take part in the SXM Aviation Photography Competition
2015 — coming from the US, Canada, Europe, Africa, and St.
Maarten/St. Martin.
1ST AIRSHOW ON ST. MAARTEN
In what hopes to be the 1st
of many, St. Maarten had its
first AIRSHOW on Sunday
November 15, 2015 over the
skies of Great Bay. Hundreds
of residents and visitors of St.
Maarten flocked to the Walter
Plantz Square to watch the
spectacular event that saw
Aerobatic pilots Melissa Pemberton and Skip Stewart loop, spin
and tumble around in their single engine airplanes. A parachute
team from the French side added a fun surprise to the act that
had earlier not been advertised. The show was commentated by
award winning Red Bull Air Race pilot Frank Versteegh and Dutch Airforce Pilot Lt. Colonel Peter Hardenbol. The airshow took
place during the Family Fun Day that was organized by the Princess Juliana International Airport that had a jam packed schedule full of music, games and dancing. A special edition of the
Boardwalk Jazz Festival was also held after the airshow. Though
spectators had enjoyed the show, the general consensus was
that the show was too short. Organizers have taken note and a
next airshow is scheduled for May 15, 2016.

The association Metimer is organizing a discovery day for all youths,
notably those from Sandy-Ground, Marigot, Grand-Case and French
Quarter, on December 2nd. These young adults, many of whom have
never been aboard a boat, will be treated to a beautiful day out to
Tintamarre Island. Metimer, together with numerous partners, aims to
show, and teach these youths about the sea and marine life in the
hopes that certain of them
may someday choose to
become boat captains or
marine biologists... The
day will be packed with
fun-filled activities, water
sports, and a tour around
the island lead by Nature
Reserve officers. Metimer
has had several boat operators come forward and offer a boat and
their services to the association for the day, but their goal is to take
150 youths which implies about 20 boats !! They are calling out to all
other boat operators or private boat owners who might have a boat
available to help with this extremely worthwhile event. Please contact
Ophelia: contact@metimer.fr on 0690 88 99 09, or Maëlle: metimer@

the sole event on the island that recognizes Hospitality & Trade personnel,
organizations and associations, for their
contribution towards the tourism industry, the island’s main economic pillar,
directly and indirectly employing 87% of the workforce on the island.
This event has been established by the St. Maarten Hospitality & Trade
Association (SHTA) to recognize outstanding performance and those
individuals, companies and organization which have made significant
contributions to the tourism industry and the island as a whole. The
Crystal Pineapple Awards gives the private sector the opportunity to
put forward the people that should really be recognized for their outstanding performance and/or contribution; may it be an excellent employee, exceptional manager or someone who has really contributed
towards tourism, the environment and the economy. The main sponsor

on Wheels Autoshow will now take place on Saturday November 21 at
the Clem Labega Square in Philipsburg. For the first time ever on St.
Maarten, all car dealerships from both sides of the island will be showcasing their cars at the same event. No longer will you need to jump
from dealership to dealership to find the best deal, its all in 1 place.
All your favorite brands will be showcased such as Audi, Ford, Mazda,
Toyota, Kia, Honda, Nissan and so much more. RBC Bank will be on
hand to offer on the spot financing at affordable monthly payments with
terms up to 7 years. This showcase will take place from 4:00 pm to 9:00
pm and is open to the entire public. For more information you can call
on +1 (721) 526-9115.
You may have noticed that the small, white and pale yellow
butterflies are out in masses again! Driving along most roads
on the island, you will see these beautiful creatures fluttering about in the vegetation along the roadside, or drinking
in swarms from puddles, or flying out across the water. They
are Great Southern Whites (Ascia monuste), that are in fact
present all year around,
but during the long and
extremely, dry summer
months, the species wasn’t
necessarily very visible due
to the scarcity of their host
plant, Cleome Viscosa.
But now, after the heavy
rains, the Cleome Viscosa
is shooting up everywhere
and so the Great Southern
White caterpillars are having a field day eating and
reproducing! Hence, the
explosion of butterflies to be seen everywhere. The numbers
should slowly decrease and the butterflies will return to a regular cycle in the near future, so enjoy the show whilst it lasts!
