Five Tips for Great Nonprofit Special Events
When organizing a special event for a nonprofit organization you will be confronted by many
questions like do I need a celebrity? Should I do a silent auction? Will media cover it?
If you follow a few simple rules, nonprofit special events of all kinds can be successful.
1. Ensure that the event and the nonprofit have a sensible connection. For instance, we
paired the LA premiere of “Annie” as a fundraiser with a children’s charity for foster
children called CASA, and a cat neuter and spay nonprofit, FixNation, with the play
“CATS.”
2. Don’t try to pepper the red carpet with celebrities. Only one pivotal “A” list celebrity
can make your event. They will bring out the media and keep the focus on your charity’s
talking points.
3. Try honoring a reporter for his or her work with either your charity or a related field.
Atleast, the reporter’s print or broadcast media outlet will cover your event.
4. Withouthaving a star celebrity, do not expect media to show up for events after dark or
on the weekends. With the receding number of available media reporters, there is little
chance they will cover to your event. Better to think of some wonderful, creative photo
you can take and send out later.
5. Silent auctions are a lot of work, and if you hire a company to provide the items, often a
flop. We prefer to sell tickets for 5 to 10 really high-end and exciting raffle items that
people can’t live without.
