2003-2004 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends of the Blue Valley Educational Foundation:
T
his past year, the Foundation achieved many of its goals and positioned itself to help the
Blue Valley School District address challenges resulting from the state school finance formula.
Among this year's highlights:
➤ The Foundation celebrated its second BVEF Week that included a variety of activities for
patrons, staff, parents and students. The BVEF Prize Patrol arrived at five Blue Valley schools
and the Wilderness Science Center to award $47,000 in grants for the 2004-05 school year.
➤ This spring's sixth Sunflower Celebration honored Gerda Weissmann Klein, Holocaust
survivor and author of All But My Life. This year's event raised nearly $80,000.
➤ The Foundation renewed its support to the Carolyn Ball Blair Wilderness Science Center in
this time of budget reductions. The Foundation pledged $35,000 to the Blue Valley School
District for the 2004-05 school year to help maintain operations of the WSC.
➤ Civic and business leaders gathered at the Foundation’s annual Community Breakfast, and
were thanked for their commitment to quality public education and brought current with the
developments in the district.
➤ The Foundation awarded nearly $240,000 in restricted and unrestricted grants and scholarships
to enhance and maintain educational opportunities in Blue Valley.
While the Foundation has continued to grow steadily since its creation, so have the challenges
imposed upon the district by the state finance formula. In the coming years, the Foundation will
continue to seek opportunities to aid the district in addressing these challenges with the continued
support and generosity of the patrons of Blue Valley.

Educational Foundation celebrated
its sixth annual Sunflower
Celebration in the Carlsen Center at
JCCC. An hors d’oeurves reception
kicked off the
event in the
atrium where

ensemble from Blue Valley
Northwest High School entertained
the guests.
The program recognized student
and staff Ambassadors from each
Blue Valley school and the students
and staff members who nominated
them. Ambassadors were nominated
based on the seven Blue Valley
Congressman
Dennis Moore and
Gerda Weissmann Klein
Virtues and how
the Ambassadors
embody them.
Also recognized
were the four high
school James C. Thompson
Scholarship recipients and the
2004-05 Excellence in Education
grant recipients.
Gerda Weissmann Klein,
national speaker, author and
Holocaust survivor was the Blue
Valley Good Neighbor Award
recipient. Klein, who has been
sharing her inspirational lessons for
almost 50 years, reminded the
audience to value their two greatest
gifts, freedom and unconditional
love. The Foundation was
honored to have U.S.
Congressman Dennis Moore
participate in the
presentation of the Good
Neighbor Award to Klein.
Kansas Senator David
Adkins served as Master of
Ceremonies for the event which
attracted more than 700 people and
raised nearly $80,000.

Assistants Ltd, Bank of America,
Bank of Blue Valley, Laidlaw Transit,
Inc. and Sprint. Fifty-four corporate
sponsors contributed generously to
make the evening possible.
Blue Valley Educational Foundation Week
The BVEF Prize Patrol kicked off
the second annual Blue Valley
Educational Foundation Week,
visiting five Blue Valley schools
and the Wilderness Science Center
to award $47,000 in grants for the
2004-05 school year. BVEF board
members, staff and grant committee
members boarded a school bus
early with a big check, balloons and
noisemakers to surprise the winning
grant writers in their schools. John
Holt, anchor for Fox 4 News, was
on hand to present plaques to the
lucky winners.
Also, at the beginning
of the week, baskets with
complimentary seeds
furnished by the Grass Pad
in Olathe were delivered to
each school. Along with the
seed packets were two copies
of This Place Called Home;
A Kansas City Cookbook
donated by KCPT. Parents and staff
members entered their names in a
drawing for the cookbooks.
BVEF also teamed up with the
Charitable Chicks, Burger King,
Custard’s Last Stand, Uno Chicago

during BVEF Week. Each business

portion of their sales to the BVEF.

Blue Valley Educational Foundational Grant Selection Process
The BVEF grant committee includes administrators, teachers,
staff, patrons and parents who independently review and score all
grant applications. The committee convenes with a summary of
average scores for each application and average ranking. The
committee evaluates the grant requests submitted by reviewing the
total dollars available for grants and compares this figure with the
total dollars being requested in the grant applications. The
committee discusses and evaluates each grant application, and
allocates funds until all grant dollars are spent. Grant checks are
awarded during BVEF Week by a surprise visit from the BVEF
Prize Patrol to each grant recipient’s school.

The Wilderness Science Center
provides authentic learning
opportunities and environmental
education for students in Blue Valley
schools. Outdoors, there are wooded
trails and study areas, a 12-acre native
prairie area, a large wetland area,
butterfly garden and bird feeding
station. A two-room classroom houses
an amphibian habitat and allows
students to conduct curriculum-related
experiments.

Indian Valley Wildlife Area
Indian Valley Elementary - $2,100

clearing of a usable outdoor research
space. Materials are provided for
students to increase research skills in
science while developing their powers

Stanley Elementary - $3,000

This after-school science club
improves the students’ ability to use
and understand the scientific inquiry
process for problem solving on science
based questions. Students had the
opportunity to participate in hands-on,
interactive, inquiry-based learning.
Summer Reading Tutoring Program
Indian Valley Elementary - $5,000

This project provides materials for
a summer reading tutoring program for
Indian Valley students in grades K-5.
It helps meet Indian Valley’s goal to
maintain high standards and expand
instructional reading services to enhance
and influence learning opportunities in
all curriculum areas.

Science Education Outreach
Blue Valley West - $1,000

High school zoology classes
introduce several Kansas animals and
classroom animals in a hands-on,
interactive presentation to pre-school,
elementary and special needs students.
The zoology students gain knowledge
and presentation skills while increasing
their audience’s interest in science and
science education.

The Blue Valley Educational
Foundation held its thirteenth annual
Community Breakfast, Thursday,
August 28, at the Sheraton Overland
Park. Dr. David Benson,
superintendent of the Blue Valley
School District, gave his final "State
of the District" address to the more
than 550 attendees. Dr. Benson
highlighted this past year’s success in
the school district having met the
standards for the No Child Left
Behind Act. He also highlighted the
growth in his tenure for the last 10
years, including that of student and
staff and program and facilities

scores are only one piece of the
educational puzzle. Having a
positive, constructive relationship
between the school district and the
community is essential to excelling
in education.
The Blue Valley Northwest
String Quartet entertained guests
prior to the breakfast. Then the Blue
Valley North Chamber Singers,
under the direction of Mary Bodney
kicked off the breakfast. They were
followed by Blue Valley Northwest
teacher, Matt Christensen, who noted
that the support the Blue Valley
Educational Foundation provides to
staff members is essential to their
success. This support was
underscored in the BVEF Grants of
Excellence video.
This year, six sponsors at the
$2,500 Benefactor level were
recognized. They included Bayer,
Capitol Federal Savings, Credit
Union of Johnson County, First
National Bank, Shawnee Mission
Medical Center and Sprint. This
year’s breakfast raised more than
$46,000 for the Blue Valley
Educational Foundation.
The Blue Valley Educational Foundation has raised more than $395,000 for the
Wilderness Science Center (WSC), an outdoor educational facility created with
the primary goal of providing authentic learning opportunities and environmental
education for the students of Blue Valley Schools. This success has been led by
donations from the Victor and Helen Regnier Charitable Foundation, Patrick and
Caroline Davidson, Capitol Federal Foundation, the William T. Kemper Foundation
and Blue Valley’s PTAs, PTOs, parent clubs and booster clubs.
In the fall of 2003, a bridge was built that completes the loop of trails around
the WSC. Much more of the WSC is now accessible to disabled students, and the
bridge also secures students’ safety with easier access for emergency vehicles.
The Dixon Family Foundation donated $20,000 for the construction of this bridge.
Another addition to the WSC in the fall of 2003 was a Kansas Natural History
Wall. The Gould Family Foundation donated $25,000 to the Blue Valley
Educational Foundation for this six-panel prairie life and geological wall. Students
are able to see and learn from this visual display. More than 5,200 students visited
the Wilderness Science Center during the 2003-04 school year.
