Each day through our work at JFSA we seek a path to wholeness by caring for the vulnerable populations we serve. As individuals and as a community we assume our place in the collective responsibility to work toward a more perfect world. I would also like to express my gratitude for the amazing team of JFSA professionals who work tirelessly and often beyond the call of duty, empowering and transforming lives. The Board was unanimous in our decision to appoint Charlotte to the agency’s top position and we hope you will join us in welcoming her. After 24 years of service with JFSA, Charlotte brings with her a wealth of experience and skills. In the past months under Charlotte’s leadership, the agency has developed some of its most important programs. From the “List of Urgent Client Needs” initiative, which raised funds to meet the crucial needs of our seniors and most vulnerable low-income community members, to the expansion of the “YOU Matter” program, which delivers critical outreach services to atrisk youth in our community, this has been a time of growth and development of the agency’s reach and impact in our community. This month’s edition of JFSA’S magazine, “Family Matters,” features some of the vital work that has been accomplished. Both our 2013 Friends of the Family Annual Campaign and the Innovators Lunch were highly successful fundraisers. The Friends campaign launched this winter resulted in acquiring critically important funding for a variety of important programs and services that support and empower lives in our community. At the ninth annual Innovators Lunch on April 10th, attendees were inspired by JFSA clients who came forward to share their stories of the ways in which the agency helped them to overcome significant challenges and adversity. At www.jfsa.ca you can view our annual video to see for yourselves the powerful role the agency plays and appreciate the huge difference it makes in the quality of life for many people who live among us. Todah Rabah to everyone who supports JFSA in its various fundraising endeavors. In particular, I note that the success of the Innovators Lunch was due in no small part to our dedicated chairs, volunteers, donors and staff. We are most grateful for their hard work and ongoing commitment. The more I witness firsthand the success stories that emanate from the work at JFSA the more I realize what a gift it is to lead this special organization that empowers its clients to achieve personal renewal and growth at all stages of life. On behalf of the more than 2,000 people whose lives are improved by your gifts, I thank you, the donors, for your support. We should all be proud of the vital work that we are enabling through JFSA. Sincerely, Greg Samuels Board Chair 3 NEW FACES AT JFSA Frieda Miller | Board Member Frieda Miller has a background in art education, museum recently retired as the Executive Director of the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre. Frieda has a particular commitment to the needs of Holocaust survivors and immigrants. Shuli Ben-Moshe | Controller (Accounting) experience with JFSA was as a client, when she came seeking of JFSA’s Employment and Resettlement Departments, Shuli earned her CGA designation. Shuli soon became a volunteer at JFSA, assisting newcomers with their job searches and helping them to work on their employment skills. She also leads tax seminars in Hebrew. Her belief that “a strong Jewish Community is an outcome of a supporting environment” inspired her to volunteer, and she was honoured as JFSA’s Resettlement Volunteer of 2011. Shuli now joins the JFSA team as Controller in the Accounting Department. She is delighted to be working with such a capable and passionate team. | Senior Bookkeeper Dafna is delighted to be joining the JFSA staff as Senior Bookkeeper. Following the completion of her education in Israel, Dafna worked in a variety of industries including garnering over ten years of accounting experience. Work in the Jewish community is one of Dafna’s passions, having previously worked for Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver. She is excited to be part of this dynamic and committed team. 4 5 BASIC RESOURCES The Architecture of Opportunity by Laura Stannard, Housing Coordinator Phyllis Lambert, a Jewish-Canadian architect and philanthropist once remarked “… Social housing is the architecture of opportunity”. Recently, JFSA has witnessed multiple real-life examples to support this insightful quote: A young man, in addiction recovery for two years, marries and moves into a subsidized one-bedroom apartment enabling him to walk to his job. A refugee temporary housing. Several months later, they receive a subsidy from the Esther Dayson Fund for a two bedroom apartment in their neighbourhood. A single mother of four children, one with a debilitating degenerative condition, can afford to live in Vancouver, the city recommended by her child’s specialists as being climatically better for her child’s prognosis. An elderly couple’s family sponsorship breaks down, There is no doubt that lives are profoundly changed and threatening their housing. JFSA is able enhanced with safe, secure and affordable housing. to move them into a subsidized Jewish seniors’ building. There is no doubt that lives are profoundly changed and enhanced with safe, secure and affordable housing. To be sure, none of this could happen without JFSA’s partnerships, both within and outside of Vancouver’s Jewish community. In particular, Tikva Housing Society, which administers the Esther Dayson Rent Subsidy Program, is an invaluable resource, stepping up to the plate to provide rent subsidies and affordable housing where, too often, government fails. The ability to refer appropriate candidates to Jewish housing societies makes the job of the Housing Coordinator at JFSA streamlines the process for people in need of supported housing and helps to ensure appropriateness and fairness on JFSA’s housing waitlist. To ensure everyone has a home, we need all levels of government funding new construction of social housing. Ask your MLA and MP about their housing strategies and funding commitments to sustain the “Architecture of Opportunity”. 6 BASIC RESOURCES Maot Chittim “Let all who are hungry come and eat.” Passover Haggadah OVER $21,000 WAS RAISED THROUGH THE MAOT CHITTIM CAMPAIGN The Rabbinical Assocation of Vancouver (RAV) wishes to thank all the generous donors who made the Maot Chittim Campaign a success. One of the more remarkable endings for a youth is the completion of high school and the beginning of post secondary school. I certainly recall how “adult” I felt when I attended college at 17 – not an adult whatsoever, but having all the freedoms of one, was exciting. their studies, writing their exams, preparing for college and otherwise getting ready for a very large transition into young adulthood. For many, this transition is fraught with excitement and anxiety. Few things prepare youth for the rather bracing change hours per day; students are frequently directed and supported in their studies and may have much attention from teachers. University is different in that the student is responsible for their learning; lectures may be only 15 hours per week; teachers may have 200 or more students per class. manage a balance of lecture time and self-directed study. Such study can be very challenging for students who may not have learned how to apply discipline to this way of learning. tests, exams and papers are worth a large percentage of the total grade; showing up to class is critical to be able relative or perhaps complete freedom for for other activities, which they might not have had the ability to participate in previously. If a university student is not adequately prepared to balance their newfound personal freedom with studies and social activities, the result is frequently the familiar failing grades years of school - always unpopular with parents footing the bill. university holds much importance for many students who may have had a conservative home-life. There are new friends, exciting classes, brainy professors and novel adventures. Additionally, there may be great temptations or pressures to participate in alcohol and drug misuse; this will be a test to balance those temptations with the need to remain focused on academic studies. Making such a transition can be overwhelming for some students. They might succeeding with good marks. It’s a lot of pressure that families and the students put on themselves. One doesn’t necessarily go from being a high school student to being a university adult without some tumult. 10 COUNSELLING SO, WHAT MIGHT BE HELPFUL? HERE ARE MY SUGGESTIONS: transition with your teachers, family, friends – whomever can share their experience with you help with them before university the summer and check out where your classes will ALAN STAMP, compex and other key sites MSC. PCFTTA organized for their classes, they often are less anxious and can learn better. Do whatever it takes to organize your time, schedule, transit, etc. Don’t lose sight of your values – You can be tempted or pulled into doing things thoughtful about why you are at university feel more connected to the school experience, and it’s also a good way to feel supported Talk – If you are truly anxious and not feeling well, talk to a school counsellor or yourself overwhelmed, as there are many ways to succeed at school. Perhaps part-time studies are more appropriate, for instance Enjoy the experience – This time passes too quickly Thank you, Annica part of the JFSA family since 2007 when she became the temporary Home Support Coordinator and also provided coordination of the Har El Luncheon and Comfort Kits food subsidy, provided supervision and support of the highly to ensure extra holiday food assistance to those in need. Thank you Annica for all of your hard work on behalf of the clients and volunteers, and for being a wonderful member of the JFSA family! We wish you much happiness in your future adventures! 11 EMPLOYMENT Skilled Trades Advancement JFSA is delighted to have received funding from an anonymous foundation for the piloting and growth of a Skilled Based on a highly successful 14-year program in Nepal, the Skilled Trades leg-up to those either currently in, or looking to enter, a career in the trades. The long-term goal is to build more support infrastructure within the Jewish community for those looking to enter careers outside of a university education. I come from a long line of tradespersons and was the first in my family to attend university. I know the importance of supporting those looking to advance their skills, and of empowering our community members to achieve their career aspirations. Anonymous Skilled Trades Advancement Program Funder employment options available to our community will help strengthen the support structures available for those in a variety of career paths. The immediate goal is to provide low-income people looking to learn a trade, to upgrade their current trade skills, or to transfer a skill set from another resources. Individual case managers will refer potential candidates from any of JFSA’s departments. The medium-term goal is to pair the candidates with community leaders identify and work with employers willing to assist these candidates. With its broad reach both culturally and geographically, as well as its many years of experience, JFSA’s Employment Services Department is uniquely positioned to deliver this innovative program. 12 SENIORS Meet Our Home Support Dream Team BY JOANNE HARAMIA, DIRECTOR OF SENIORS SERVICES It is with great pleasure and pride that I introduce you to three of our thirty Home Support workers - the program’s heroes. Our clients consistently comment on how committed, reliable, “Anita is very honest, she sees what is to be done and then just does it and we have fun” – Mrs. N., Home Support Client Anita, a licensed practical nurse, joined JFSA three years ago. For the bound lady who required mechanical lifting and assistance with all aspects of personal care and feeding. Now she cares for two clients, with preparing breakfast, dressing and shopping. She assists another husband with personal assistance. Daughters of the couple appreciate Anita - she is dependable, respectful and helpful. “Diana is kind, compassionate and caring.” – Mrs. S., Home Support Client She works four days a week with two seniors who are in the same complex. One, Mrs. S. suffers from severe depression. The second, Mr. B. relies on her for breakfast delivery, showering, medication reminders, and intelligent discussion. Staff appreciate her calm, attentive approach to all assignments. “To us, she is like family.” – Home Support client Virina has been with JFSA since 2011. She works six days a week, physical limitations. To them, she is like family. She consistently works three evenings in order to help her clients get ready for bed. weekend needs, treat all their clients with respect and compassion, go above what is required, and remain professional in all aspects of their work. They exemplify the standard of our Home Support service. Thank you for your commitment to the program. 13 IMMIGRANT RESETTLEMENT Welcoming Them Home readiness, and a connection to the Jewish and general communities, our Resettlement Counsellors are here to provide a starting point for their Canadian journey. Common questions involve locating affordable housing and preparing for employment. Resettlement Counsellors work closely with our Employment Services Department to facilitate introductions to the Canadian workforce. Thousands of new immigrants arrive in Canada every year seeking a better life. Each arrives under their own unique set of circumstances and backgrounds. Some have the support of already present family members; others come completely alone. For many, Canadian culture is an entirely foreign experience. Speaker Bureau Series Those of us born here often take Canadian society’s intricacies for granted. For a new immigrant, however, our systems can be daunting. JFSA delivers an educational series every two months addressing topics that are critical for successful integration into Canadian society. These are delivered by experts in Each year, JFSA assists approximately 300 Jewish immigrants in their journey through Canadian society. From the moment of their arrival, to the beginning of their careers, JFSA’s goal is to welcome each of them to their new home here in Canada. topics as the Canadian Education system, BC’s Medical system, and Canadian Banking & Tax systems, among others. The series is facilitated by Russian and Hebrew speaking professionals in our community who volunteer their time to deliver pertinent information in the native language of the participants. What follows is a brief summary of the services JFSA’s Immigrant Resettlement Department provides to immigrants in our community. One-on-One Services Integration Every immigrant’s story is unique, and JFSA tailors its services to be effective for each individual and family. From information access, referrals, counselling, We want every immigrant to feel themselves a part of our community. That is why we offer a variety of 14 IMMIGRANT RESETTLEMENT integration services, including the Former Immigrant to Newcomer Connection. This program engages former immigrants in reaching out to newcomers (matches are made by JFSA Counsellors) through social events around Jewish holidays, and events with speakers from the Jewish community on topics selected by the participants. Facilitated by Resettlement Counsellors, the program’s success depends entirely on the efforts of volunteers from the pool of former and new immigrants. activities within the Jewish community and provide support to those in need of basic resources, especially those who are female heads of households. An outreach worker (himself a former immigrant) provides information and resources, connects those living in the Tri-cities to the Vancouver Jewish Community and promotes activities that bring people together to celebrate Jewish holidays and lifecycle events. A JFSA Resettlement Counselor directly supervises this worker. There are that are connected through the JFRN. committed to the program. Outreach in the Tri-cities Bus Tours Last year, enabled by a three-year grant from the Jewish Community Foundation, our Immigrant Resettlement and Basic Resources departments collaborated on an outreach program to families living in the Tri City area (Burnaby, Coquitlam, Vancouver may not seem like a large city to those familiar with other parts of North America, but for a new the various locales. JFSA offers City Tours for Russian-speaking immigrants, facilitated by our Russian-speaking Resource Network ( JFRN). With the rising cost of housing in Vancouver, more and more Jewish immigrants are settling outside of the traditional borders of the Jewish community. We want to ensure that these families remain a welcome part of our diverse community and that their connection to Jewish culture and our services are not lost because of physical distance. The goal of the program is to connect these families to learn about the rich history of Jewish and Civic sites, helping to connect them more closely with their new home. From spring through early fall, we offer four tours at a fraction of the cost of regular tour services. For more information on the Immigrant Resettlement Department, please contact Charlotte Katzen at 604.257.5151 or ckatzen@jfsa.ca Each year, JFSA assists approximately 300 Jewish immigrants in their journey through Canadian society. 15 DEVELOPMENT List of Urgent Client Needs Earlier this year, we announced our list of Urgent Client Needs.
