The latest full year, 2014, ended with around a 6% increase in the number of congress tourists, according to several different studies. With balances yet to be closed, forecasts for 2015 also point to a significant increase: 60% of the members of the Spain Convention Bureau believe that 2015 will come to a close with a greater number of events; 44.8% believe that the number of attendees will rise and 38.5% predict an increase in daily expenditure. But most importantly: in spite of 2015 not being an especially favourable year for congress tourism due to electoral events, nobody believes that less events have been organised or that less congress tourists have visited the country. In regards to 2016, important events have already been scheduled in Spain’s main destinations. Dates have already been confirmed for 2018 and even for 2023. Spain’s positioning as the second destination for major international events and also as a place that is in great demand for medium-sized meetings with a growing attractiveness for product presentations and incentives, is greatly due to the feeling of security and safety provided and to the experience and the ability of its professional organisers, venues, suppliers and travel managers to adapt to different situations when organising successful, sustainable, accessible and experiential events. In addition to international uncertainty and possible fluctuations in the global economic environment, the continuity of Spain’s success in tourism for meetings greatly depends on the industry itself. Investment in technological innovation, improvement of education and training, constant market analysis to identify changes in demand and the answer to new trends such as the burgeoning multisensorial events are key aspects in the process of attracting more meetings and making these more attractive, impressive and efficient. In order to improve the use of these facilities, the 2020 Sustainable Tourism Programme will define new frameworks for collaboration with the private sector to therefore attract events. This trend is on the rise as there are other projects that will come to light in coming years. With the idea of designing a differentiated product, the regional government now seeks to integrate the region’s most characteristic tourism products within the MICE segment.
