Sew Fun! - Australian International School Hong Kong
Sew Fun! Sew Fun classes are for creative kids who want to design and sew! The classes are aimed at girls or boys in grades 4, 5 or 6. Children will discover how much fun designing and creating fashion can be. They will acquire a basic life skill by learning to sew while also improving their fine motor skills. They will be inspired by the creative process and learn how to turn an idea into a fashionable and wearable garment. 1 Term overview Over the term students will work on 3 projects. The first is to create a concept board. This assignment will encompass the basic elements and principles of design and fashion illustration. The students will select an appropriate fabric and design their garment. This will represent the planning and research side of design. The second project will be a small handmade item. This will cover hand-sewing and basic handling and cutting of fabric. The third project is to make their garment. The students will have a choice of a skirt, a top or shorts. We will look at measurements and patterns. They will use a template pattern and alter to their size and cut the fabric. Students will learn how to thread and use a sewing machine. The cost of the class will include all fabrics and sewing requirements. 2 My Background I have a background in fashion design and patternmaking. I studied ‘Fashion Technology’ and went on to work as a designer and patternmaker for fashion companies Seafolly Swimwear, Cheetah Swimwear and lingerie company Triumph International. I spent time in London working for bridal label Wizard of Goz and then joined dance costume company Chris-Anne. I was selected to work on 10 costumes for Jane Torvill of the ’Torvill and Dean’ ice-skating duo for their 1994 winter Olympic comeback. I also studied ‘Draping on the stand’ at London College of Fashion during my time there. Upon my return to Australia I started lingerie label, ‘Frenzy Bodywear’ which sold into retail stores in Queensland. After the birth of my two daughters I opened my own studio, creating made to measure bridal and eveningwear under the label ‘Joanne England Couture.’ I relocated to Hong Kong with my husband and family in April 2012. I hope my Sew Fun classes help to inspire the next generation of designers. 3
