Dam Row, November 10, 2012
It as a Dam nice day on Saturday the 10th of November when Mario Delgado, DeEnna Walters and Cindy Warford took advantage of the glassy water and the mild November day to row from the boat house to Buford Dam. They were joined along the way by two high school crews from Revolution Rowing and one Crew from North Georgia College. Mario had accomplished this marathon row before in a double with Gary Sickinger, but was determined to do it in a single this time, while Cindy was jealous and wanted to do it, so she sweet talked DeEnna into being her partner. Leaving the docks at 7AM provide a slippery task, literally as the overnight dew had frozen on the docks and ramps. But, they launched on time and soon slipped away into the rising fog. They raced over the misty waters for Veterans Park to meet up with the other boats by 8AM, but because of the heavy fog at the park neither set of crews saw the other. As a result the LLRC rowers continued at a fast past until around the Gainesville Marina thinking they had got left behind, only to find they were nearly a mile ahead of the others by this point. At this stage Marilyn Delgado, aboard the Forester's Pontoon boat being used as the safety launch, issued a challenge to the two fours and the quad that they could not catch our crews before Port Royale Marina, and so the first race of the day was born. The College Four managed to pass the single and double just before the turn to Port Royale which sparked a renewed spirit in the crews and they rowed together to the marina, where they all waited for the others to catch up. After a break to let all the young ones switch positions and use the facilities of the marina, we set out once again! The college crew stayed with the Mario, Cindy and DeEnna until the Dam was in sight. Then the real race started. The double flew across the water to a large lead before Mario and the College boys even knew what was happening. The other crews tried to close the gap but Cindy and DeEnna were in full flight and rode their enthusiasm to victory. After a few minutes wait for the remaining crews to catch up, photos of all were obtained to prove the accomplishment, and all were declared to be 'Dam Rowers'. Just ask DeEnna, Cindy or Mario to show you the T-shirts, presented by DeEnna to the LLRC rowers, proclaiming this new title! (As told by their safety driver Rick Warford)
