Their large, showy blossoms are the highlight of the garden in late spring and they also make excellent cut flowers. THREE TYPES OFFERED: Intersectional Peonies, page 166 Intersectional Peonies Intersectional peonies prefer the same culture as garden and tree peonies. Choose a permanent, sunny or partially shaded site that is not in competition with large tree roots and has rich, welldrained but heavy, neutral soil. Though they grow best in full sun, the flowers last longer in part shade. They will spend their first year getting established and will not be floriferous, but the bud count should increase each year. Do not cut plants all the way back in the fall since the lower part of the stem often carries next year’s buds. Buds will also come from underground like herbaceous peonies. Garden Peonies, pages 166-167 Tree Peonies, page 168 Garden Peonies Tree Peonies Choose a permanent, sunny or partially shaded site with rich, well-drained, neutral soil. Protection from afternoon sun and harsh winds will help to extend the life of the flowers. Newly planted peonies (2/3 eye & 3/5 eye) will spend their first year getting established and will not be floriferous. However, once established, their substantial, deep root system makes them drought tolerant. When picking a site for tree peonies, choose a permanent site that is not in competition with large tree roots and has rich, well-drained, neutral soil. Though the plants will grow best in full sun, the flowers will last longer in part shade. Allow plenty of space between plants since they can grow quite large and live 50 years or more. They will spend their first year getting established and will not be floriferous, but the bud count will increase each year. Do not cut down tree peonies in the fall since the woody stems carry next year’s flower buds. GARDEN CULTURE: GROWER TIPS: The most critical aspect of planting peonies is proper planting depth. For intersectional peonies, the crown should be planted 1½ - 2 inches below soil level. If the eyes have already begun to grow, they may stick up CORRECT above the soil a PLANTING DEPTH bit after planting SOIL LEVEL the crown below 1½-2” soil level. Finish size: 2-3 gallon pot CROWN EYES The most critical aspect of growing peonies is proper planting depth. For garden peonies, the eyes on the root should be planted to a depth of 1½ -2 inches below soil level. The CORRECT lower roots PLANTING DEPTH may be SOIL LEVEL trimmed a bit to fit in the 1½-2” pot. Proper planting will EYES help to ensure a good flowering performance. Finish size: 2-3 gallon pot FALL SHIPPING ONLY The most critical aspect of planting peonies is correct planting depth. Grafted tree peonies should be planted so that the graft union is approximately 4-6 inches below soil level. This may leave very little of the woody stem CORRECT showing above PLANTING DEPTH ground and the roots may need to be trimmed to fit in SOIL LEVEL the pot. If planted correctly, the grafted 4-6” plant will develop its own roots and the plant will be more Graft Union robust as a result. Finish size: 2-3 gallon pot SPRING SHIPPING ONLY x/x/x/x/x = foliage height / scape height (where applicable) / bloom time / zone / size offered 165 Intersectional Peonies P Intersectional peonies are created by crossing herbaceous and woody tree peonies. P TAKE AWAY TIP Top 10 reasons why peonies don’t flower: 1. They are planted too shallow or too deep. 2. They are getting too much nitrogen. 3. They are over or undernourished. Peonies thrive with little care and limited amounts of fertilizer. 4. The buds were killed by a late frost, disease, or excessive heat. Southern growers should plant early flowering cultivars. 5. There was not enough light for buds to form. 6. The plants are too young or immature. 7. The clumps are too large or overcrowded. 8. They have been moved or divided too often. 9. The plants were cut back before the foliage turned brown in the fall. 10. The soil is too wet or too dry. Peonies require well-drained soil but also like to be watered down to the bottom of their roots. Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings. Paeonia ‘Karl Rosenfield’ (Double) PAEKR3E, PAEKR2E (Garden Peony) Brilliant fuchsia-red blooms are a double, semi-rose type. They make wonderful mildly fragrant cut flowers. Butterflies and hummingbirds adore their sweetly fragrant blossoms. A range of short to tall varieties is offered here. Tall Garden Phlox CULTURE: Tall Garden Phlox prefers a dry start after potting up, but once the shoots begin to appear it is very important to keep plants consistently moist and well-fertilized. Overhead watering should be avoided and the plants should be well-spaced to allow for good air circulation. This will help to prevent powdery mildew and other disease issues. Like most other Phlox, this one prefers full sun. However, it prefers gritty, slightly alkaline soil instead of the fertile, moist soil favored by other species. Creeping Phlox GROWING TIPS • • • • • Use a 7 or 8 inch Mum Pan or Azalea Pot. Do not use a standard one gallon container. Wider pots allow more root/soil contact. Water thoroughly after potting for good root/soil contact. Water lightly until new growth appears. Grow plants either in a cool greenhouse (above freezing) with good light levels and air circulation or pot plants about April 1 and place directly outside under white, breathable row cover. Water plants through fabric as needed. Remove fabric when flower buds appear. It may be necessary to cover plants again in the event of a late, hard frost.
