Another of Sykes’ most famous successes came when he nursed Igloo (Arctic Explorer), the Group Two winner and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) second, back to full health from a devastating break down at Perth in 1971. The gelding shattered sesamoids in both front legs but was able to return 22 months later to carry 61.5kg to victory over 2,000 metres thanks to the work of the great vet. Sykes pioneered a number of treatments now commonplace throughout the industry, such as feed supplements, standing castrations and the use of penicillin. He was also among the first to tap into the incredible potential of monitoring blood tests to assess how a horse was responding to training, a technique of which T J Smith was a big fan. His influence also helped shape breeding in Australia when, in 1989, he and good friend and Arrowfield Stud founder John Messara were first introduced to Danehill (Danzig). Messara had soon moved beyond the fact the stallion was back at the knee and acquired him when Sykes pointed out the same fault had been shared by the great Star Kingdom. Elliot has tasted feature race success in the past, with Albert The Fat’s 2011 Emirates Stakes win at Flemington a highlight. “Winning one of the big races during Melbourne Cup week with Albert The Fat was an extraordinary experience”, said Elliot. “Anyone involved in racing dreams of that opportunity. Elliot is also full of admiration for jockey Nathan Berry, who is unbeaten in all five rides on Unencumbered. “Nathan is such a lovely guy and clearly comes from a great family”, said Elliot. “He is just so professional and well mannered, he knows his own flaws and positives. “From the first time he ever sat on Unencumbered, Nathan was full of praise for him and just wanted to ride him. Elliot may be back in the winners enclosure at next year’s Magic Millions after securing two yearlings with Baker at the sales this week. “I don’t like going above $100,000 for a horse and Bjorn and I hit that mark this week”, explained Elliot. “We got the Testa Rossa-Arms Wide Open filly for $100,000, she is a lovely sort and reminds people of Sheer Style. “We also purchased the OnemorenomoreInterfere filly for $60,000. “Bjorn is proving to have great ability in preparing two year olds, just look at his record over the past twelve months with the likes of Unencumbered and Twilight Royale. “He has a system and he sticks to it, a system that is getting great results”. a lovely sort and reminds people of Sheer Style. from the moment they jumped from the barriers, it all just clicked. “It’s all up to Bjorn, he calls the shots”, “We also purchased the OnemorenomoreInterfere filly for $60,000. “I always watch the races at the track from standing near the “Bjorn is proving to have great ability in preparing two year number one stall, the winners enclosure, and from the 800m I olds, just look at his record over the past twelve months with the just knew that he had them covered. likes of Unencumbered and Twilight Royale. “I try not to get too excited during the race but I gave a little fist pump when they crossed the finish line”.
