In Viborg Municipality, we consider creativity and culture as contributory factors when creating quality for the citizens in our municipality but also as something that reaches beyond the boundaries of the municipality. One of the most creative environments, which is a result of this dedicated effort, is The Animation Workshop which has become a trendsetting centre for animation based on media production over the last years. An educational institution which has grown from the experimental stage into a professional age. The Animation Workshop has succeeded in placing the young people’s artistic talents in a market economic context. The school is surrounded by an entrepreneurial environment which has emerged from the melting pot of nationalities where both students and teachers are a mix of national and international animators. Therefore, we in Viborg are particularly proud of hosting CARTOON FINANCE. It is an event that matches the strengths Viborg Municipality possesses through our versatile and dynamic business community and many creative businesses. Thus, I would like to welcome all participants in this year’s conference to Viborg and it is my hope that the conference delegates will find some time in their schedules to experience some of Viborg’s wonderful nature, authentic history and daily life. 4 Morten Thorning General Director of The Animation Workshop The Fine Art of Financing T he Animation Workshop today forms an international centre of education, knowledge and development for animation and related businesses. In the old military barracks of Viborg and side by side with cultural and educational institutions we have created a diverse and vibrant environment for creative and professional development. Over the years of developing The Animation Workshop we have indeed been strongly supported by the European MEDIA programme and tremendously helped by the guiding light of the numerous CARTOON organised events. In our endless effort to match innovative creativity with rock solid skills we strive to support, challenge and develop the artistic and commercial aspects of animation and have recently established Arsenalet (The Arsenal); a company cluster and incubation house for Danish and international animation businesses. However, to fully benefit from the richness of creativity and artistic skills in the European animation industry we depend on the fine art of financing. Hosting this year’s Cartoon Finance is therefore an important element in The Animation Workshop’s effort to strengthen the European animation industry. In the hope of an inspiring and enlightening conference we warmly welcome participants and speakers to Cartoon Finance 2011. 5 Aviva Silver Head of Unit of the MEDIA Programme of the European Commission C ontinuous training of professionals and talented individuals is essential to reinforce the competitiveness of the European audiovisual industry, a core objective of the MEDIA programme of the European Union. That is why ever since its beginnings in 1990 the MEDIA programme has devoted a substantial amount of its budget to cofinance training initiatives developed by professionals for professionals. More than 2000 professionals coming from countries participating in the MEDIA programme are trained every year through MEDIA funded training initiatives where they have the opportunity to acquire new skills, learn from others’ mistakes or successes; fine-tune their projects thanks to experienced tutors; explore new technologies or expand their contact base. For the last years, MEDIA has actively supported the CARTOON MASTERS as they offer an adequate reply to European professionals’ needs of coherent and extensive information in the fields of development, financing and distribution of animation works be they TV series or animated features. At Cartoon Finance, discussions will focus on how animation producers can better finance their shows, cut on costs and develop brands and intellectual properties in order to increase their revenue streams. New licensing and merchandising partnerships with toy manufacturers, home entertainment companies will be commented upon and the new MEDIA Production Guarantee Fund will also be explained. In this year of 20 years’ anniversary of MEDIA, we join our Danish host and the Cartoon Masters organisers to wish you luck in your new collaborations. 6 Costas Daskalakis Head of MEDIA Unit – Education, Audiovisual & Culture Executive Agency ! p T o n S ta y o IItt’s’s MMaasstteerr TTiimmee CARTOON masters 2011 Training seminars for animation professionals CARTOON DIGITAL 3 to 5 May 2011 - Málaga – Spain Want to stay tuned with your market, network and learn the latest developments in the animation industry?
