LEISURE www.FortHoodSentinel.com March 28, 2013 B7 Photos by Erin Rogers, Sentinel Leisure Editor ABOVE, A traditional shield used by Scottish clans in battle. RIGHT, The left wall of the first room at the Central Texas Area Museum shows maps, relics and artifacts from the reconstruction and early statehood of Central Texas from 1865-1900 and tells the story of the Robertson Colony. It also has mannequins dressed in period clothing pertaining to the periods on display and relics, artifacts and stories about the Tonkawa Indians native to this area for centuries before Texas settlers arrived. Museum: Details about Central Texas history found close to home in Salado Continued from B1 of the Tonkawa as well, and the Tonkawa joined up with the Apache Indians – another extremely war-like tribe. They eventually became friendly with Texas and other southern divisions, and by 1837, they had drifted south and left the Central Texas settlers in peace. The museum also tells the story of Central Texas throughout every period from colonization up to today. Colonization is displayed in detail from 1825-1836 and then on to the Texas Republic period from 18361845. The museum then moves on to the era of early statehood from 1846-1861 straight into the 1861-1865 confederate period. The other two exhibits on detailed display at the museum are the reconstruction and later statehood and also the Robertson family colony. Also, many counties in by their current residents – mostly people who care about the preservation of Salado and Central Texas history. Learning about the Native Americans who used to live on this land was really interesting to me, because I’m always looking for new stories and books about where certain Indian tribes in the country were and who they had to deal with when the “white men” were moving in. The Tonkawa Indians occupied everything from Western Oklahoma to Central Texas and into Western and Eastern New Mexico. They were an incredibly strong war-like tribe, which battled for close to two full centuries on this land with Spanish inhabitants. By the 18th century, U.S. settlers became foes ABOVE, The game of checkers was one form of entertainment used by the settlers in the 1800s and 1900s, made from sliced ears of corns and painted to determine sides. It was played very much how today’s game of checkers is played. RIGHT, A mannequin dressed in traditional early Scottish battle dress is on display at the Central Texas Area Museum, though the kilt would be a different color depending on the clan. Central Texas were named after men who had Scottish surnames. There is a lot to learn about our Central Texas home, and knowledgeable staff who are happy to tell about every Central Texas connection and heritage. The Scottish connections are many, and there is information at the museum about every clan, from clan patterns and clan history to their journey from Scotland to the Carolinas and into Central Texas. Make sure to stay up-todate on the upcoming gathering of the Scottish clans of Texas in November.
