A Newbie Goes to Fabi
by Jean MacGillivray
I had wanted to get on the track for
some time, and I got my wish on a
warm Friday afternoon in September
when 14 of us met at Shannonville to
do some lapping on the Fabi track.
Mike Rouleau generously arranged
the event.
In addition to Mike and his Mazda
Miata, there were two Honda Civics
(Jaak Laan and Richard Muise), a
Prelude (Chris Holmsten/his (very
young) grandfather), two Corvettes
(Rick Byrne and J.P. Jr.), two Subaru
Imprezas (Kirby Dunstan and Jim
Morrow/me), an Audi Quattro (Rob
Kleins), a BMW 320i (Alex Byrne),
an Infiniti (Gord Acorn) and an Escort
Wagon (Denis Savoie). Track
experience ranged from none, for me
and one of the Corvette drivers, to
significant. After a drivers' meeting to
review the basic rules about passing
and maintaining a safe distance, we
were ready to go.
Jim and I shared my stock Impreza,
suitably shod with R-compounds
(another "first" for me). He drove, I
listened...there was so much to
experience and so little time.
Information overload! I took a break
to review my course map and mull
over what he had told me. I even
climbed up to the top of the bleachers
to watch the drivers' techniques. I
could see Jim down below, having a
heck of a good time.
I thought back to my previous
experience at Shannonville. During
the Canaska Cup weekend, Ryan
Woltman took me around a few times
in one of the Bytek Beetles. It was
great! I had admired his smooth
driving style, which seemed effortless.
Now I had the chance to go around
myself and see what I could do.
Instead, I was sitting in the pits,
studying a darned map and trying to
get my mind around this whole
business of R-compounds, using the
whole track, lines, braking and
acceleration. I could tell this would
take a while to figure out. What to do?
Luckily, Jim came in and disturbed
my reverie. We decided that I would
3
drive and he would coach me through
it. The Fabi track is quite technical,
with eight corners and one mediumlength straight built into a 2.23-km
loop. I found it both novel and
challenging to use the whole track and
aim for the correct lines through the
corners (I especially liked the very
visible candy-striped turtles). The
corners are very much interdependent
so if you get off your line on one, your
rhythm is off for the remaining
corners. It's definitely a challenge to
muster the coordination and
confidence to do a well-executed lap!
the track with my head encased in a
helmet and protruding. It was also
interesting to compare driving on a
track with Solo II and Slush'n'Slide. I
think I just accepted the head position
in Solo II because the run time was so
short. Now I'd like to find a solution.
In the end, much fun was had by all
and a few of us gathered at the
Marysville Sunoco to fuel our cars
and ourselves, and to discuss the
evening's pleasure. Thanks again,
Mike, for making it possible!
Jim said my times were improving,
but my mind was on trying to get it
right. Only afterwards did it occur to
me that I could've hitched a ride with
different drivers, or gone and stood in
key spots around the track to watch
and learn. Oh well - more ideas for
next time.
One thing I would like to
change is my seating
position. With the helmet on,
I felt as though my neck was
stretched forward like a
turtle. My head was slightly
squashed and the movement
in my arms was restricted.
I'm sure sitting comfortably
makes you feel more in
control. Again, I didn't think
to ask if anyone else had the
same problem and what they
would suggest. But I do know
that I was more comfortable
driving in a three-hour rally
not wearing a helmet than the
much shorter time I spent on
Mike diving for Fabi Corner-1.

Exec. Meeting Minutes
- Sept 18th
Attendees:
• Ron, Bob, Jeremy, Rob, Pat, Chris,
Richard, Helen, Gord, JR
AGM Discussion:
• Ron requested a copy of minutes of
2000 AGM, Richard will find them and
forward them to the exec.
• Rob will be nominating committee
chair.
• JR will chair the AGM meeting.
• JR will attend Solo II drivers meeting to
recruit a director elect from that
field
Solo II:
• Due to cancellation of event 3, the
number of events counted toward trophy
points are 7, meaning you could still
earn full points and have missed two
events.
Banquet:
• Confirmed for Louis' Steakhouse for
November 24.
• Basil is organizing the event, Ron will
host the event.
• Bennet is the trophy repository, please
arrange to return your trophies to him or
any executive member.
• Discussion on subsidizing the banquet
held, agreement on single ticket vs.
couple and family ticket purchases. i.e.
Price reduced for spouse/additional
family member ticket purchases.
Canaska Cup 2001:
• Final invoices received to finalize 2001
event.
• the budget for Canaska Cup will be in
the November Link
Canaska Cup 2002:
• Event planned for July 6th- 7th
• Shannonville already contacted for
booking
• Planning committee being created
Rally:
• Rally of the Golden Pine discussion.
The rally was well planned, but lightly
attended, only 6 cars ran the event.
Much discussion on raising the
attendance was held, suggestions
included;
• running on asphalt only to reduce
potential damage thus catering to a new
group of entrants i.e. Solo II
competitors
• more advertising
• having the events run closer to the city
for easier access to the event.
All ideas will be reviewed by the Rally
director.
Winter season events:
• Discussion revolved around level of
commitment required of instructors to
duplicate the intensity of schools
provided last year. A great community
service and revenue generator for the
club the schools are instructor
intensive.
• A survey is being created to increase
the instructor base in the club so that we
can repeat the success of last year.
• JR to investigate/create postcard size
survey form that will be added to the
Link for members to reply either in
person at the General Meeting or by
dropping it in a mailbox. This, we hope
will help find new instructors
within our membership.
Summer 2002 events:
Planning discussion
• Canaska Cup 2002 mentioned earlier,
MCO lapping day plans discussed,
negotiations for location and dates have
begun.
• Proposed - MCO hold a racing school in
early April for the purposes of MCO
member to obtain a regional road racing
license
• Proposed location of Shannonville,
dates to be confirmed. a committee is
being formed to spearhead this
initiative.
• first order of business is to survey the
membership as to the requirement of
this event.
Discussion on club charter:
• A motion was raised to discuss the
implementation of two-year terms for
some executive positions. This question
will be posed to all members via the
canvassing for candidates over the next
two weeks. Also the motion will be
added to the new business at the 2001
AGM for a general vote.
Chris Holmsten:
• Chris is leaving Ottawa to continue his
studies in Automotive Engineering in
England. MCO wishes Chris the best of
luck and will be waiting for regular
updates from our UK correspondent.
(Chris - remember the Link deadline
is the 18th of every month :) - ed)
• JR to investigate postage meter
equipment/pricing from Canada Post.

Main Street Racing

Ken Baird's CarQuest ProTruck

Race to the Finish Line with
Billy Routcliffe
DATE: Monday, September 17,
2001
Ken Baird and Main Street
Racing moved up through the
pack at Capital City Speedway,
starting in 8th place he showed
what the CarQuest #2 ProTruck
could do. Throughout the 30 lap
Feature Race last Sunday, Ken
just kept working his way
ahead, passing each ProTruck in
a miniature race of its own. On
the last lap, on the last corner
and through the straight, Ken
pulled
up
beside
Billy
Routcliffe's #82 ProTruck but
needed another lap to win. Billy
Routcliffe of Manotick/North
Gower area, won a well
deserved race, having been in
the lead a couple of times before
this season when something
happened to deprive him of the
Final Win. Congrats to Billy still winning races in over 30
years of racing. Bill Routcliffe¹s

Third Place went to Steve
Munro of Carp. Steve Yendall
and Matt Moffitt finished 7th
and 8th, but finished well in the
heat races with a 3rd for Matt
and 4th for Steve Yendall. In
the first heat race, things were
going well until a close run by
another ProTruck cut the valve
stem of Ken's right front tire.
He got another tire on but had to
start at the back of the pack.
The heat race gave him a eighth
place finish, which combined
with a down the wire finish in
the Feature meant a Very Good
Sunday of Racing at Capital
City Speedway.
All seem ok, and Martin was
working on his car that night,
getting it ready to give Dave a
run for his money in the last few
races of the Season.
Earl Wylie was back in the
running, and was in first place
for half the laps of the ProStock
Feature until he was spun, and
he then had fun working his way
through the pack. Great fun
watching Earl's special style of
driving which seems to be quite
successful.
In the Mini Stocks, Dave
Watchorn made a great come
back - He won his first heat,
third in the second, and then
won the Mini Stock Feature to
regain a fair portion of the
points he lost with losing two
engines in a row in recent
events.
Martin Walter was
doing great, got a second and a
first in the heats, but in the
feature had a very hard run in
with the 53 Mini Stock. Chris
Dunham won the second heat.

October 2001
The New Mount
Tremblant
by R. Bennett Leckie
It has been worth the wait to see the renewed track.
Friday was warm but overcast, but Nigel
Mortimer (driver #1), Adam Mortimer
(son/driver #2), and myself got our first
look at the new track, on bicycles. A lot
of trees have been cut down, along with
moving a lot of dirt, to increase run off
areas greatly, which will make the track a
lot less intimidating. The track surface
has had over a year to cure, but they have
removed a lot of the camber and/or camber changes out of the track. The hump in
the back straight has been lowered, along
with the approach and departure being
more gradual. FIA Spec curbing has been
installed, replacing the old sharp, tire-cutting, car-flipping curbing of old.
The old driving lines have not changed
much with the exception of Namerow, the
last turn that leads on to the front straight.
You still finish your braking on the downhill, but the corner starts 50ft sooner. It is
no longer a smooth 180 degree right turn
slowly slopping down to it's exit, followed
by a small dog leg left on the front
straight. It is now a very sharp right turn
that downs down like a cork screw, followed by the dog left that is a real turn
that may require braking for faster cars.
For pictures of the new track, see the
Canadian BMW Club Web Page.
Saturday we were the first group on the
track, in the rain. "It was a fine day for
motor racing." As there were only 3 Formula Fords entered, all from Motorsport
Club of Ottawa, we were added to the
Formula Libra Group, with 8 Canadian
Champ Lights (Formula Renault with a
Chrysler Neon motor) and 2 Formula-3
cars. The Champ Cars are about 10 sec a
lap faster, but the sweet sounding F3's
were as much as 30 sec faster. All our
Formula Ford drivers had to watch their
mirrors as you did not know if it was one
or two F3's about to get your heart racing.
In the rain Nigel got down to a 2:05 on the
2.5 mile course.
Nigel's years of racing, of which many
laps were done at Tremblant, allowed him
to qualify on the third row, for the afternoon race. Pier Burtot was a few positions back, still learning the track. Adam
managed to out qualify one of the Champ
Cars, in his first Formula Ford race of
2001, but not having a tach was showing
in his lap times, as he kept the revs low.
In the Production/Sedan Group Bob Armstrong in a Nissan NX2000, was fast in
the wet thanks to front wheel drive and
being a Winter Driving Instructor. The
track was drying during his qualifying
session, and one of the rain tires was rubbing on a strut, so he had to do a four tire
pit stop, but only lost 5 minutes in the 25
min session.
As race time approched the sun started to
appear, but was it going to be enough to
dry the new track surface was the question? Formula Fords in Ontario (CASCOR) run on treaded Formula Ford Dunlops, so it would be the same tires wet or
dry. Adam and Pier adjusted their brake
bias and front sway bars for a dryer track,
leaving the rear bar for the grid, as both
had cockpit adjustment. Nigel adjust the
brake bias and reset the Penske Shocks,
but would have to wait until the grid to
decide if he would reconnect both front
and rear sway bars.
The Formula 1200's (FV) were the race
before us, and started on a wet track, but
as the race progressed the line in Namerow started to dry. This left Nigel in more
of a dilemma, but the FV's Race needed a
large cleanup, which gave Herb and I the
time we needed to reconnect the swaybars.
The full dry setup on Nigel's car, gave him
the advantage to easily pull away from
Pier and Adam, to win the Formula Ford
Class. Both Nigel and Pier's lap times
dropped below 2:00 minutes for the first
time all weekend.
Sunday brought Indian Summer Weather,
as people were seen wearing shorts by
mid-morning. After partying in Ottawa
Saturday Night, Adam returned early
(1.75 hours) with an electronic tach for
the 1984 Van Diemen.
There was no morning warmup/practice,
only a late morning Qualifying Session.
Nigel took the first few laps to help show
his son Adam the line, and both were turning 1:58. Nigel then started to pull away
in the 1985 Van Diemen, with lap times
down in the 1:53, which Adam could not
match.
Pier did not complete a single lap in Qualifying as he tore all the splines out of his
clutch disc. Pier was ready to load up and
go after Banan towed him back to the paddock, but Nigel put the power of Mortimer Racing to work in the form of Herb
and I. We changed the disc in about an
hour, which included removing the transmission and rear suspension to access the
clutch pressure plate/flywheel.
As we were the second last race of the
day, we now had time to watch some other
races and wonder the Paddock.
Hamish from Ottawa, driving an Eval won
the Vintage B Group, keeping a Lotus 11
from New England at bay.
Paddocked across from us was a 1934
Hudson Super Six Indy Race Car from
Toronto, driven by a driver not much
younger. He enjoyed driving Tremblant
for the first time. The sound was beautiful
from an unmuffled straight six, that
weighted 800 lbs of the car's 2200 lbs dry
weight.
Another interesting vintage car was the
Allard coupe with a BIG V8 complete
with hemi heads, fuel injection, with Offenizer on the valve covers. You felt the
earth move every time the driver got on
the loud pedal.
There were racing MG's, Lotus', Ginetta's,
Sport Racers, Trans Am Camaro & Mustangs, etc to be found in the regular Paddock, but down on the Skid Pad the Track
owner had a 1984 Ferrari Boxer 512 that
was modified to compete at the 1984 LeMans 24 hour Race. Was it there for show
or go?
In the Formula Libre Race Nigel and Pier
passed each other, with Nigel taking the
lead in Formula Ford at the end of the first
lap, and then started to pull away with
consistent lap times in the 1:51's. Pier
could not match this pace at first, as he
lost sight of Nigel on the long back
straight, but on the second last lap Wendy
Mortimer recorded a 1:50.9 for Pier to
give him the fast lap, Nigel the Class win.
Adam got down to a 1:56, which made
him very happy.
The final race of the day was the Production/Sedan Race with the Ferrari lining up
and the back of the field. He passed half
the field on the first lap, but waited until
the front straight to pass Bob's NX2000 as
he filled Bob's mirrors coming though
Namerow. Bob finished near the front,
and was very happy he chose to come to
Tremblant, and most of the Drivers, crew,
and worker would whole heartily agree
with.
Looking forward to more Racing and Lapping at Tremblant next year.

NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Annual General Meeting, Tuesday November 6, 2001
Proposed By-Law Changes
The Motorsport Club of Ottawa is holding its Annual General Meeting starting after the Regularly Scheduled
Monthly meeting starting at 8:00PM on Tuesday November 6, 2001 at Louis' Steakhouse, located at 1682 Cyrville Road in Ottawa.
The club executive is proposing the following by-law changes, which will be voted on at the Meeting. The proposed bylaw changes are described below.
MCO is a dynamic and changing club, with various affiliations to sanctioning bodies. In recent years MCO has
affiliated with RallySport Ontario (RSO) and directly to ASN Canada FIA for karting. The bylaws must be
changed to reflect this affiliation with other sanctioning bodies other than CASC-OR.
Change Sections 2.1 and 2.2 to read,
2.2 A Full Member shall be entitled to one (1) vote on any motions presented to the Club. Membership in ASN
Canada FIA (ASN), Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs - Ontario Region (CASC-OR), Rally Sport On-tario
(RSO) and/or its affiliates and all such membership rights, privileges, and responsibilities shall be ac-corded
to any Full Member. As a member of ASN, CASC-OR, RSO and/or its affiliates the Full Members shall be allowed to enter motorsport events at the rate set for such a member by the organizing body.
2.3 A Social Member shall not be entitled to vote on any motions presented except on motions of fee change for
Social Members. When entering motorsport events, a Social Member will not be considered a Full Mem-ber
of the MCO or CASC and/or its affiliates, and is subject to any restrictions or increased fees established for
that event. Social Membership does not entitle the member to ASN, CASC-OR, RSO, and/or its affiliates privileges.
A complete nominee list for a coming election is currently required to be presented to the executive at the general meeting one full month prior to the Annual General Meeting. The proposed change is to allow nominations
up to and including the monthly general meeting immediately prior to the Annual General Meeting. The proposed change to the section is as follows:
Change Section 5.4 to read,
5.4. At least two (2) months prior to each Annual Meeting of the Club, the Board of Directors shall appoint a
nominating committee of three (3) Club members who shall, not later than the monthly meeting prior to such
annual meeting, submit to the Board a list of candidates willing to stand for the offices of President, VicePresident, and Directors. Such list shall include at least one (1) name for each vacancy on the Board to be
filled at such annual meeting.
In addition, any two (2) members of the Club shall be entitled to submit nominations to the Nominating Committee or the Board not later than the end of the monthly meeting prior to the Annual General Meeting. Such
nominations shall be in writing, signed by the persons making the nomination, and by the person nominated,
acknowledging his willingness to stand for election.
10
October 2001
(Continued from Page 10)
Quorum numbers are difficult to achieve in our organization. This change proposes a modification to the number
of voting members required to establish a quorum. The change to the section is as follows:
Change Section 10.6 to read,
10.6 A quorum for the Annual or a Special General Meeting shall consist of <insert voted text here> (or smaller)
of the members entitled to vote on the business to be transacted. Each member present at a meeting shall
have the right to exercise one (1) vote. Voting shall, save as herein provided be a show of hands, unless a
ballot is demanded by two (2) members entitled to vote on the question. If such a ballot is demanded, the
same shall be taken in a manner as the Chairperson directs. All questions presented at such meetings, save as
otherwise provided in these by-laws, or by statute or law, shall be decided by a simple majority of votes. In
the case of a tie vote, the motion voted on shall be declared as lost.
If the change is approved, an additional vote will be held to choose the number of members and percentage of
members in good standing required to consist a quorum. The vote will choose from the following options:
1. 20 members or 17%
2. 25 members or 20%
3. 30 members or 25%
4. 35 members or 30%
5. 40 members or 33%
Allowing members to vote by proxy can help the club achieve appropriate numbers for quorum at Annual
General Meetings. The proposed change is to make voting by proxy more accessible to club members by
reducing the required distance at which club members can vote by proxy. The change to the section is as follows:
Change Section 10.7 to read,
10.7. Only those persons whose permanent residence, as listed in the Club's records, is not situated within a
radius of <insert voted text here> kilometers of the Ottawa Postal Terminal shall be entitled to cast their
vote by proxy at a Special or Annual General Meeting.
If the change is approved, an additional vote will be held to choose the number of members and percentage of
members in good standing required to consist a quorum. The vote will choose from the following options:
1. twenty (20)
2. thirty (30)
3. fourty (40)
4. fifty (50)
Your presence at the Annual General Meeting is required to vote on these bylaw changes. Please make every
effort to attend the Annual General Meeting.

MCO Rally Group
News, September 2001
by Craig Hamm
This column is to inform MCO members
about activities in the club's Rally Group.
There's lots to tell!
Jim Morrow (Rallymaster) and Jodie Shay
(Routemaster) held the Golden Pine Rally
in Golden Lake, NW of Renfrew. Generally, if you missed it, you really missed it. It
was a long ride to the venue, but all found
it was worth the investment. At one point
we were fearful of having more workers
than competitors, but in the end six teams
registered for a fantastic ride. I worked a
checkpoint on a 12km section of incredible
hilly-twisty narrow backroad - with only
two inconsequential potholes! The roads
were in great condition and very car friendly. See, we don't want to hurt your cars.
We also got to use our sexy new retro-reflective checkpoint boards sporting a cool
MCO logo. The president's challenge was
won by Paulo Nunes of SMCC. Let's see if
we can get this title back to the host club
next year. Other participants included
Louis Cabardos, who drove 3 hours from
Cobourg to compete in our MCO rally instead of his own club's rally (PMSC). The
attendance of both Paulo and Louis was a
strong endorsement for our efforts in
MCORG as Louis is one of the best known
TSD competitors in Ontario, winning last
year's Yokohama Winter Rally Series
hands down, in a dilapidated, yet reliable
'Terdcel'! Several competitors walked
away with the coveted prize packages farm fresh free range eggs!
Last year's Lanark County Highlands Rally, by Morrow and Laan, will be run October 20th on what I'm sure will be a gor-geous autumn afternoon. Jim has made nu-
merous changes to last years route, so don't
bother digging out the route book you
stashed away. I ran in this event last year,
and it was a real blast. Jim is a passionate
rally driver, his roads will not disappoint
those looking for a challenge. The proceeds
from this rally will benefit our partner, the
Lanark County Therapeutic Riding Association, which helps severely disabled and
sick children and adults. Plan for a great
Sunday drive through magnificent country
before the short winter days set in and support this most worthy organisation.
Yours truly is nearly done building the
"Mississippi Valley Rallye" of approx. 200
km, and will be run November 10th at
nighttime!! The rally roughly completes a
loop around Mississippi Lake and crosses
the river a few times. This rally is suitable
for beginners with a good mix of loose surface to tarmac. The roads chosen are very
car friendly. This rally will get some of
you an early warm-up for the January/February Yokohama winter series. As I did for
the Totally Silly Drive in June, I have tried
to locate my rallies not too far from Ottawa
to encourage first-timers. The rally starts
in Almonte. I will be providing more details as I finalise the organisation.
Jaak Laan's Mangy Moose rally, originally
slated for Dec 8, 2001, will be deferred to
March 2002. This puts it after the Yokohama Winter Rally Series, and fills a lull in
the 2002 MCO Rally Series schedule. Yes,
an MCO Rally Series! Details are still being worked out on a points schedule and
event mix.
Weare looking at running an old version of
the Lanark Highlands Rally in early January, as a driving tune-up for the very competitive Yokohama Winter Rally Series.
The rally will likely have fewer than usual
checkpoints to allow concentration on the
winter driving. As usual, keep posted for
details.
As of last night's MCORG monthly meeting, we now have three performance rally
teams in MCO! Greg Brady and Steve
Frankovitch are competing in the in Rally
of the Voyageurs (Parry Sound) Sept 29-30
and the Rally of the Tall Pines (Bancroft)
Nov 23-25, and Corey Groves and his wife
are preparing for a run in Rally of the Tall
Pines. Soon to be MCO member, Warren
Haywood (Maple Leaf Rally Club) is also
preparing a performance VW rally car. So,
last year, no performance rally cars, this
year, three!
If you have not looked at the new MCO
website Forums and Events calendar, go do
it soon. I have learned that the old expression "ask and you shall receive" works
with Rob Microys, our capable web master.
Rob has done a great job at supporting the
online needs of the Rally Group. Currently, the rally forum seems to be the most active, yet I wonder why most of the postings
are from myself and a short list of others.
Therefore, I encourage ALL of you to actively engage the website and participate in
the club discussions. MCORG is not my
rally group, it's YOURS.
Finally, MCORG has changed the location
of it's monthly meetings. We've moved
from the informal pub atmosphere to a
more formal meeting room in the Emerald
Plaza Branch of the Ottawa Public Library,
on Merivale Road. For a small fee, we get
a great space to hold our discussions, loads
of free parking, a moderately central location next to many restaurants, and audio
visual equipment for watching videos etc
after the business portion of the meeting.
All are welcome, even non MCO members,
whether you are curious about rallying, or
are fully involved.

MCO Rally Group
Pace Notes
by Jim Morrow
We've been meeting once a month at the
Arrow and Loon restaurant on Bank
Street. This month we tried an experiment, we rented a room at the Ottawa
Public Library (Bells Corners Branch).
It was great, I got to sit up front behind a
big table and everyone had soft, comfortable chairs to sit in...and it was quiet! All
agreed that this was the way to do it and
we have already booked the next two
meetings at the Emerald Plaza branch of
the Library.
We welcomed a new member, Warren
Haywood. Warren has been active in TSD
Rallying and rallysprints with the Maple
Leaf Rally Club and has decided to move
to the MCO. He is in the process of building a car for performance Rallying. We
now have three members who will be
campaigning cars in performance events
this year, up from zero last year! We're
definitely making progress on that front.
We set ourselves three goals at our Rally
meeting on Tuesday, September 25:
1. Develop a Club Rally Series for next
year. While not yet finalized, it is proposed that scoring be based on participation in:
- 3 of 5 TSD Rallies
- 2 Slush 'n Slide events
- 1 Yokohama Winter Series Event
2. Develop a winter Ontario Road Rally
Championship event. We'll run it as a
local event on January 12, 2002 (a good
tune-up for the Yokohama Winter Series, which begins on January 19). In the
winter of 2003, we'll mount it as part of
Rally Sport Ontario's ORRC Series,
when it will mark their return to rallying in Eastern Ontario.
3. Develop a Yokohama Winter Series
Rally (12 hours, 600 km, run at night)
14
for 2003. We'll map and test the rally
this winter and, if we can get the massive administrative base in place (radio
cars, advertising, about 25 marshalls,
etc.), we'll run it in 2003. This is something that Rallysport Ontario has been
looking to have for a number of years
now.
shalls and will train you. You can go from
this kind of marshalling to working on
National Performance rallies with real
monster cars and crazy drivers. Please
volunteer to work or enter the event if
you can. We'd like to be a success for the
sake of the charity that we're partnering
with.
The MCO-sponsored Golden Pine Rally
ran out of Golden Lake on September 15.
We had a beautiful sunny day and what
all participants agreed were "great" roads
(smooth, mostly dirt, lots of elevation
changes, exciting and at times very technical corners and interesting speed). We
had to shut down one checkpoint…when
the marshall went out to check it before
the rally, it had been taken over by several pickup loads of duck hunters, celebrating the first day of the season.
The Rally Group has arranged with
"Active Canadian Emergency Training"
to offer a First Aid course on October 27
and 28. It will give you the Standard First
Aid certification, CPR - B and a grouping
of automotive-trauma type skills (bring
your helmet and learn how to take an accident victim's helmet off and how to protect the spine). The course costs $85. Get
the cheque to me in advance and it will
be cashed the day of the course. Please
make the cheque out to the MCO.
Due to a number of events and incidents,
many were unable to compete in this
event and we ended up with only six
teams. The good news is that two of those
teams came from far afield to participate.
Paulo Nunes, the president of the Sports
Motor Car Club out of Montreal arrived
late, and drove like a demon…several
checkpoint marshalls noted his colourful,
sideways method of approaching checkpoints. Louis Carbados drove up from
Cobourg, near Toronto, to wrench first
place from Tony Lai and Jane Lennox of
the MCO. Louis drove his ratty old Tercel
rallymobile in which he dominated the
Yokahama Winter Series the last couple
of years. How such a vehicle does so
well, let alone stays in one piece, is a tribute to Louis' unbelievable driving and
maintenance skills.
We will have to pay for the number of
spaces I request whether or not you attend, so your fee is not refundable. This is
an excellent opportunity to renew and upgrade your certification or get certified.
On October 20, we'll be running the 2001
version of the Lanark Highlands Rally
out of Almonte. This TSD event was well
attended last year with 22 teams competing. This year, we have partnered with the
Lanark County Therapeutic Riding Program and will run the rally as a charitable
event with all proceeds going to the Program. Contact me soon if you're interested in running in the event. The rally also
offers an unique opportunity to gain some
worker points. We need checkpoint mar-
The instructors are from a company that
specializes in training organizations, such
as police, and Corporate Emergency Response Teams. All instructors are either
working local paramedics or are involved
in the health-care industry.
The Rally Group is slowly growing and
we have seen some positive interest and
assistance from some of the old guys who
used to rally when the National Capital
area was a hotbed for Rallying.
All of this requires a lot of manpower and
significant dedication. If you think you
might be interested, we can offer many
opportunities to participate in the fastest
growing motorsport in North America.
The great thing is that even though we're
starting to see more factory participation,
the teams are very accessible and happy
to take the time to discuss the sport.
Please come out and join us for one or
more of our rallies (Oct. 20, Nov. 10, Jan.
12, March 9).
