November Memories
Chaplains Corner
A dollar & eighty-seven cents … she’d saved for months! Della flopped on the old
couch and bawled. With her husband's salary cut this past year, it was hard to save.
But when Mr. James Young came home he was called "Jim" and hugged greatly. Della
finished her cry, rubbed her cheeks, looked out the window dully. What could she
buy Jim for Christmas with so little? The hours spent planning for something fine &
rare & sterling for him. Seeing herself in the mirror, Della whirled around, her eyes
shining. Her face lost color as she pulled her hair to its full length. Two possessions
they took pride in: Jim's gold watch, his father's & grandfather's; & Della's hair, now
to her knees, rippling and shining like flowing waters. She faltered; a tear fell. But on
went her old jacket & hat, & she was out the door to the street where a sign read:
"Mme. Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds." "Will you buy my hair?” Della blurted.
"Take yer hat off & let's have a look," Madame said. Then, ”Twenty dollars," lifting
the mass with a practiced hand. "Do it quick!" said Della. Then, ransacking the stores,
Della at last found it! It was made for Jim; none other like it! A platinum fob chain,
simple, chaste in design, proclaiming its value by substance alone; worthy of The
Watch. It must be Jim's, like him in its quietness and value. Twenty-one dollars, then
home! Now Jim could proudly check the time, not just look at it on the sly with its old
strap.
At home, Della looked at herself; with curling irons, repairing the ravages of generosity & love, her head soon wore tiny, close-lying curls. "If Jim doesn't kill me," she
thought, "he’ll say I look like a Coney Island chorus girl. But, oh, what else could I
do?" … 7 o'clock, coffee made, frying pan ready to cook the chops. Della held the
chain, waiting. Steps ... she turned white, "Please God, make him think I’m still
pretty." Jim entered, stopped, eyes on Della, an expression she could not read, terrifying her. Not anger, surprise, disapproval, horror, nor any expected sentiment; just a
peculiar look. Approaching him. "Jim, darling," she cried, "don't look at me that way!
I had my hair cut & sold because I couldn't live through Christmas without giving you
a present. It'll grow again--you won't mind, will you? Say ‘Merry Christmas!' Jim; let's
be happy! I have a beautiful gift for you!" "You've cut off your hair?" asked Jim,
shocked. "Cut off & sold it," said Della. "Don't you like me just as well, anyhow? I'm
me without my hair, ain't I?" Jim looked about the room. "You say it’s gone?" "Sold &
gone!,” said Della. “I did it for you! So shall I put the chops on?"

Chaplains Corner
Jim seemed to suddenly awake, enfolding his Della, drawing a package from
his pocket. "Don't make any mistake, Dell, about me. I don't think there's anything in the way of a haircut or shave or shampoo that could make me like my
girl any less. But open this package and you’ll see why you had me going." Her
fingers tore at the wrapping! A scream of joy, then instant tears and wails, eliciting all Jim’s comforting powers. It was the Combs, side & back combs, Della
had longed for in a Broadway window. Pure tortoise shell, with jewelled rims-just the shade to wear in her beautiful vanished hair. Expensive combs that she
had yearned for without any hope of possession. Now hers, but the tresses
that should have adorned them were gone. She hugged them to her bosom,
and at length was able to look up with dim eyes & smile and say: "My hair
grows so fast, Jim!"
And then Della cried, "Oh, oh!" for Jim had not yet seen his gift. She eagerly
held it out to him; the precious metal, reflecting her bright and ardent spirit.
"Isn't it dandy, Jim? I hunted all over! I can’t wait to see how it looks on the
watch!" Jim sat down, hands behind head & smiled. "Dell," he said, "let's put
our gifts away awhile. They're too nice to use right now. I sold the watch to
buy your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on."
(Based on a story by O. Henry)
It has been said that the true value of a gift is in what we have left after the
giving …
Merry Christmas,
Chaplain Ken
Christmas Blessings
What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part, Yet what I can I give Him,
Give my heart
On this joyous day, and throughout the new year, may your life be filled with an abundance of love.
