This site also represents a pastoral landscape
which reflects the agricultural way of life that was
once widespread in the mountainous regions
of Europe. It allows us exceptional insight

The seasons, landscapes,
mountains, streams and even
villages are adorned with unique
and different appearances. The
light is ever changing and the
charming atmosphere seems almost
suspended out of time ... whilst
everything else happens elsewhere
at full speed.
Allow yourself to be transported
into the pyrenean universe of
the Gaves Valleys: the rhythm
of the summer sun, the sound of
the cowbells and the sweet smell
of the flowers or even the mild
winter weather and its hushed
atmosphere, both delicate and
magical. Discover the blooming
of the mountain in the spring, the
footsteps of men and their herds
climbing to their summer pastures
or the riches of a traditional
autumn where encounters are as
intense as the purity of the air atop
the peaks.
The Gaves Valleys are undoubtedly
the jewel of the Pyrenees since they
are home to both some of the most
prestigious sites such as Gavarnie,
Lourdes, Cauterets and the Pic
du Midi de Bigorre, but also some
more intimate places where a rich,
preserved nature is proposed to
all who visit. Of course men still
live in these incredible mountains.
So what are you waiting for?
Why not dive into the world of the
Pyrenees?
Start creating your memories here!

The mountain itself is an
experience, it discovers, feels,
observes, lives. With every season
you discover different landscapes

Trip in the Pyrenees
National Park
Created in 1967, the Pyrenees National Park extends from West to East,
from the Aspe Valley to the Aure Valley. On the Spanish side of the
mountains, the park is continued on by the Ordesa National Park and
the Mont Perdu (Lost Mountain). The National Park is full of fabulous
landscapes as well as exceptional plant and wildlife. In addition to
priding itself on its protection missions, its knowledge and monitering
of the natural and cultural heritage, the National Park has made
welcoming all members of the public one of its main priorities. In each
valley, the National Park Maisons offer you information

The Pibeste- Aoulhet
Natural Reserve
The Pibest Natural Reserve, created in 1994, prides itself on being
the largest Regional Natural Reserve in France with a surface area
of 5000 hectares. Discover this natural and unique space in the
heart of the Pibeste massif. Due to its geographic situation, at
the convergence of mountain, oceanic and mediterranean climatic influences, it can introduce you to a great diversity of plant
and wildlife : over 850 plant species, 22 birds of prey including the
Egyptian Vulture , the reserve’s emblem, and several large mammals like the Cosican mountain sheep...
Paths for walkers and hikers allow visitors to discover the heritage
of the Natural Reserve.

Sites Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is a vast network of European
natural sites presenting challenges in terms
of biodiversity. Its goal is to maintain, or in
some cases restore, the biological richness
of the environment, taking man's actions
into account. No fewer than 14 Natura 2000
sites bear witness to the richness of the Gaves
Valleys' natural heritage.

The Néouvielle
Natural Reserve
Created in 1935, the reserve covers 2313 ha
which climb from 1800 to 3091 metres above
sea-level. The granite Néouvielle massif is
remarkable for its number of lakes and its
diverse landscapes. Here, you can see izards,
partridges, marmots, you can admire the lakes
and summits and why not spend a night in one
of the many mountain refuges?

This first "high mountain" lake is situated
in the Pyrenees National Park and is easily
accessible for the whole family. The path
gently climbs through the trees, and the lake
lies calmly in a clear and beautiful setting.
This is the ideal site for a family outing and
you can continue up to the waterfall and the
Doumblas cabin.

SOME PRACTICAL
INFORMATION
• Make sure you have good
walking shoes and take
clothes adapted to the
weather conditions.
• To avoid getting sun burnt,
cover up and protect yourself
with sun cream.
The Embarrat Lakes are a succession of lakes
suspended above the Marcadau Valley. The
ultimate mountain setting: clear lakes with
a backdrop of granite. Each lake reflects
relaxation. However the view of these lakes
must be earned; they are accessible to wellequipped, experienced hikers.
After the Cayan plateau, turn right and follow
the steep path towards the Embarrat Lakes.
This is the hardest part of the walk. You will
reach the Embarrat lakes (two lakes at 2,078
metres and 2,139 metres above sea-level), the
Pourtet lake at 2,420 metres, and the Nère
lake at 2,309 metres, this all with a splendid
view over the Vignemale. The descent which
follows takes you down to the Wallon refuge
and then onto the Pont d'Espagne via the basic
route.
• So as not to get dehydrated,
take water with you and drink
regularly.
• In a storm, do not take shelter
under trees, nor on peaks or
rocky ridges. Keep away from
any metal.
• Make sure you have a precise
map : minimum 1/50000,
1/25000 off trail.
• If you head out alone, tell
someone about your route
or leave a note in your car
or at the place where you’re
staying.

A superb lake nestled in the
heart of a crater, on the Spanish
side of the border. This lake
lies like a precious stone at the
bottom of the Bernatoire Valley.
Every year in July, hundreds of
Spanish cows cross over a small
gap in the mountains from the
Spanish side to come and graze
on French pastures, a legacy of
the Lies et Passeries treaty: an
agreement between the rural
communities of the Aragon
valleys and the Lavedan. Like
a sort of perpetual peace treaty
between rural communities,
these agreements govern the
use of wood, water and pasture.
Your walk will be defined by
several marmot observation
stops. Marmots are practically
tame in this valley!

The Gaube Lake is one of the great classics of our valleys. Indeed when
you are in front of this superb lake, you can also admire the north face
of the Vignemale, the highest summit in the French Pyrenees reaching
3,298 metres above sea-level. The climb from the Pont d'Espagne is
equally wonderful; you will weave your way through the pine trees and
granite blocks, occasionally catching a glimpse of the exquisite maze of
streams below.
Note that a chairlift leaving from the Pont d'Espagne is available to
take you up to the level of the lake (it is possible to purchase one-way or

This is an easily accessed walk from the magnificent

The lac des Gloriettes is a big lake with a dam located at the entrance
to the Cirque d'Etaubé, one of the cirques registered as a UNESCO
Heritage Site. This cirque is crowned by the 3,344 metre high peak of the
Mont-Perdu. It is possible to reach the top of the dam by car. Getting to
the lake thus requires only a few minutes walk.
It is also possible to get round the lake on foot. In order to do this, you
mustn't go towards the lake but in fact take the small path which climbs
up away from the last car park on the opposite side from the dam.
Follow this path up and it will lead you to a dominant position, from
which you will have a beautiful view of the lake. You can then walk
around the lake on the left and cross a footbridge to leisurely reach the
dam and thus the starting point of the hike.

The plateau de Saugué above Gèdre offers
an opportunity to discover picturesque local
barns and affords a superb panoramic view
of the Cirque de Gavarnie peaks. It is a very
beautiful plateau that is accessible by car. It is
thus easy to walk around the wide track that
crosses the plateau de Saugué. Pretty barns
and a superb view of the cirque de Gavarnie
will serve to embellish the walk. A walk on the
plateau (on foot or on the road with a buggy) or
a hike to the Col du Portillou for hikers (count
3.75 hours round trip up to the Col).
The plateau de Bellevue
— Gavarnie (1 700 m)
The plateau de Bellevue lives up to its name because it offers a
magnificent panoramic view over the cirque de Gavarnie and its great
waterfall. It's an easy walk to do from the village of Gavarnie and you
can extend it to the Soldat cabin, or even up to the Col de Tentes. It is
located at slightly under 1,700 metres above sea-level and gives you the
opportunity to enjoy the view of the Cirque de Gavarnie and its summits
of over 3,000 metres, in particular the Pic du Taillon.
Col de Riou
— Luz Saint-Sauveur — Cauterets (1 949 m)
This mountain pass links up the Luz Saint-Sauveur Valley, the Pays Toy,
and the valley of Cauterets, and it offers beautiful views of both the
mountain chain and the plain. This walk can be climbed by both slopes.
The route leaving from Cauteret is a more challenging walk : it starts in
the undergrowth and climbs up to the mountain pastures. The one from
Luz starts from the ski resort Luz Ardiden (Béderet). The route on both
sides follows the famous GR10 (marked out in white and red).

Staying in the Pyrenees is not only an intense holiday, it is also
meeting a whole culture, know-how, and authenticity which is
both conveyed and treasured by its inhabitants. A new concept of
«sustainable» holidays involves consuming the area’s heritage by
buying local products, understanding the local life by observing the
architecture of the barns and the villages, learning about the local
people by asking a shepherd about his life and work, in short, being in
contact with other people and discovering mankind.

L’ AOP BARÈGES-GAVARNIE (CONTROLLED DESIGNATION
OF ORIGIN)
For as long as man can remember, shepherds from the valley have
driven their herds following the rhythm of the seasons and the local
natural resources. During the summer, the herds move around in
total liberty in order to make the most of the best grass offered up by
the mountains. In return, their grazing preserves the quality of the
landscapes. It’s precisely this plant and wildlife of the high mountains
that brings the succulent flavour to the meat from Barèges-Gavarnie. In
the autumn, they decend between 1,000 and 1,800 metres of altitude
to graze in the prairies around their own barns. During the winter, in the
sheepfolds at the bottom of the valley, betwee 600 and 1,000 metres
above sea-level, the animals feast on hay and grains harvested the
previous summer. And in the spring, they head back up to the barns and
rediscover, under the fresh, new sun, the first grass shoots of spring.
A sheep found nowhere else in the world!
Over the centuries in this valley, one of the highest of the Gaves Valleys,
man has succeeded in breeding a race of sheep which is perfectly
adapted to its territory: the Baregeoise. Rustic, fine-boned, with a
perfect fleece, it resists the harsh mountain climate and is sure-footed
on some of the more difficult to access terrain.
THE LOCAL CHEESE FROM THE VAL D’AZUN
The Val d’Azun, located in the heart of the Pyrenean Mountinas, is
characterised by its emblematic landscapes shaped by its agriculture.
It’s an area which is traditional for producing the Pyrenean tomme:
cheese made from cows’ milk, ewes’ milk, goats’ milk or a mixture
thereof. For twenty-five years, the cheese producers have been taking
action in order to modernise their production tools and their commerce.
This mobilisation of the local farmers has accumulated today in a
mutual desire to mark the identity of the tomme which comes from the
farms in the Val d’Azun.

3. THE MAGIC OF THE PYRENEES BY NIGHT
The Pays de Lourdes and the Gaves Valleys are home to many protected
natural spaces, and grand sights such as Lourdes and Gavarnie. But
this is not all, they also boast one of France's, and even Europe's, most
beautiful night skies. The purity of the Pyrenean night sky is now
protected by the Pic du Midi IDSR (International Dark Sky Reserve), the
largest and most beautiful in the world, certified since December 2013.
So after an enjoyable day, just wait for the sun to set so that you can
witness the magic of the Pyrenees by night!
And you can stay out after midnight!

Le Jardin
des Bains
— Argelès-Gazost
The thermal spa in Argelès-Gazost opens
into a monumental hall made from Pyrenean
marble. This perfectly preserved building
is a remarkable example of thermal spa
architecture dating to the end of the 19th
century. The chlorosulphuric waters allow
us to efficiently treat veinous or breathing
problems and lymphedema.
The thermal spa Jardins des Bains will take
you on an exotic journey thanks to its unique
areas which transport you far from the real
world:
- The Emerald Forest: bubble beds, jacuzzi,
massage jets, bubbly baths, gentle river
rapids and waterfalls.
- The Ziggourat : hammam, Turkish baths,
fragrant baths and musical pools.
The Jardin des Bains offers diverse activities
for working on your figure: Aquatapis
(underwater treadmill), Aquagym (water
aerobics).
New in 2015, « baby swimmers » classes are
now offered every wednesday morning.

BE CAREFUL
Be careful when enjoying the mountains in winter. If you are outside the marked areas, you must make sure you are
fully informed of the risks and ideally, make sure you are accompanied. Look at the weather forecast and the ARB
(Avalanche Risk Bulletin: +33 (0)8 92 10 20 (0.34 € / mm)) ; you absolutely must wear safety equipment :
shovel, probe, avalanche beacon or transceiver (which can be rented by the day); and do not overestimate yourself !
