C
hapter 2 – Cannon Fire punctuates Commodore’s
Ball. Yes, much fun, frivolity and honor were bestowed
at this year’s Commodore’s Ball orchestrated by Matt and
Laura Bryant. The receiving line received, the shrimp boat
(Opti) sailed again, the Vodka luged (is that a word?), the
ballroom danced, 15 Past Commodores and spouses
presented and perfectly timed cannon fire marked the
changing of the guard. Had I been racing, I would have
been over the line a bit early, but who was counting.
Thank you to the Club staff for another great event and
thank you to the sold-out, distinguished crowd that
attended. To see a 105-year old Club shine like new with
a large number of younger members in attendance, while
respecting its history, is a very healthy sign. Please pencil
this in for next year. And while you are penciling, add
the next morning’s Blessing of the Fleet that our Fleet
Captain Angela Kowalik successfully directed, while the
rest of us on the dock sipped coffee, agonized over the
impeding chilly weather and passed the hat for a pair of
socks for Vice C Richard Winning.
The Club successfully hosted the Snipe National Masters
Regatta and the inaugural ISSA High School Keelboat
Invitational was sailed for the Mendelblatt Trophy in
the Club Sonars this past month (results not in at press
deadline). Thank you to our Junior Sailing Committee and
Todd Fedyszyn for cultivating and conducting this event.
Our antique car and boat enthusiasts led by Board
Member Bill Waters once again produced the Car Show
in South Straub Park. Thanks to all of the Club volunteers
and Club employees, many of whom were back at their
posts early Sunday after a long day with the Commodore’s
Ball the prior evening.
We had a Kids’ Fishing Tournament at Snell Isle (thanks
Nate) and some folks built gingerbread houses at the
Main Club…early plans were revealed for a gingerbread
condominium next year, but the sticky buns complained
that the proposed height of the gingerbread blocked
their waterfront view. Fortunately, the gingerbread man

explained that it wouldn’t be just another cookie cutter
design and it was all settled in 15 minutes at 300 degrees.
Phew…
In what I consider a 2014 hat trick for the Club in terms
of management (our new GM and the vastly improved
food being the others), our new Chef Joseph now has a
full month behind him, including navigating through the
C Ball. He has been trying to meet as many members as
possible, while filtering and evaluating our Club culture.
I personally have seen some clever and tasty menu
changes, but my own mission is to assure our members
and guests that their service is and will be prompt and
professional. I have mentioned for several years that we
can be a victim of our own mission to have you visit the
Club often. If you attend the same place often enough,
even your own kitchen, you gather enough data that you
become critical of greater and greater detail. It’s human
nature. Our challenge as a Club is to provide variety and
stability/comfort at the same time and to always do it
promptly and professionally. Please know that the GM,
the Officers and the Board will keep an eye on such
things and will toss the challenge flag on your behalf
when needed so as to keep you and your guests in the
game and out of the fray.
Don’t miss the Salties’ annual Christmas Boutique on
December 2. And the holidays are coming, so we hope you
will all visit the Club to at least see the decorations. Please
come by and bring your prospective new members. And
please consider Intermediate and Legacy Membership
opportunities as a meaningful and economical way to
help other family members join the Club.

Parking
The 2015 Parking Decals were mailed in the middle of November, so everyone
should have them now. Please be sure that you have placed them on your cars
as the former decals are no longer valid.
Just a few reminders in regard to the parking policy:
• Parking Decals are to be placed on the back side of the rear
view mirror.
• In the event that you are in need of an additional decal:
° A max of 3 decals total per membership is allowed with proper documentation.
° Vehicle registrations or insurance cards in the member’s name for EACH
vehicle owned must be presented in order to receive an additional decal.
° If a member has more than 3 cars, and is driving a car without a decal, your
membership card will be accepted.
° Should you purchase a new vehicle: please remove the decal from your former
car and place it on your new vehicle
° In the event that the decal is damaged in the process, please return the old
decal in and exchange for a new one.
Our goal is to assure available parking for our members and, unfortunately,
in the past there have been some liberties taken with the decals. It has been
our policy to accommodate all members, regardless of the number vehicles,
but due to increased usage of the garage, we must limit the number of decals
issued. We feel this is a fair procedure and is in the best interest of the Club
as a whole.
Decals are no longer handled through the Membership Office. With the
proper paperwork, an additional decal may be obtained through Maria DeBord
– 727-892-6886 or spyc-payables@tampabay.rr.com.

National Championships!

and SPYC at the 2014 Interscholastic
Sailing Association Single-handed
National
Championships
over
Halloween weekend in Bellingham
Washington. Sailing in the Laser
Radial, Nic dominated the 18-boat
fleet, winning the event by 12 points
over his nearest competitor. Patrick,
sailing in the laser full rig, won his
division by 18 points. By winning
both divisions, Shorecrest/St Pete
YC is the first team ever to have won
both divisions at this prestigious
championship since it was first sailed
in the 1970’s.
Earlier in October, both Nic and
Patrick, along with brothers Kyle and
Josh Dochoda competed in the first
ever High School Keelboat qualifier
for the National Keelboat Challenge.

for the National Regatta in late

Philip Peterson also competed in the
qualifier finishing 5th overall. SPYC
will be the proud host of this first time
championship over the weekend of
November 21-23. The winners will
be crowned the National Keelboat
Champion and will receive the newly
donated Mendleblatt Trophy!
The SPYC Junior Team was well
represented at the annual Naples Cup
Youth Regatta over the weekend of
Nov 8-9. Sailing in the Laser Radial
Division, SPYC’s Liam sailed a strong
regatta finishing 2nd overall. Also
sailing in the Laser Radial were Hannah
Steadman, Emily Wright, Mo Bereday,
Elizabeth Shanahan, Patrick Shanahan,
Grant Boicheff and Nevin Avila. Sailing
in the Club 420 fleet, brothers Josh and
Kyle Dochoda sailed a strong regatta
placing 3rd overall.
The Opti RWB team was also well
represented with 10 sailors competing
in the 120-boat fleet. Blaire McCarthy
was our top finisher overall placing 18th
overall and 8th in red fleet. SPYC White
fleets put 1 a strong performance with
Ethan Danielson finishing 4th overall
and Bella Shakespeare finishing 8th.
Also competing for SPYC were Emma
Shakespeare, Will Fox, Watt Icely,
Pearson Payne, Sam Lindsay, Anika
Boicheff and Heather Kerns.
In the Opti Green Fleet, SPYC’s Kate
Danielson was the star of the show
finishing 10th overall in a fleet of 110
boats. Adam Kullman finished in
12th overall and Logan Rimel in 15th.
Also sailing in the green fleet were
Madi Icely, Alex Romero, Jack Carter,
Taylor Brown, Ava Shakespeare and
Trent Boicheff.
The Edison Sailing Center in North Ft
Myers hosted their annual River Romp
Regatta over the weekend of October
18-19. Over 300 sailors competed in
the Opti RWB and Green Fleets as
well as the Laser Radial and 420.

Noroton Yacht Club in Connecticut.

Seas and Greetings…
I
t was another amazing Commodore’s Ball Weekend in
November. The Fleet was at our own downtown docks for the
entire weekend to enjoy all the activities there were to offer at the
club and around the downtown area. Friday, we had docktails
about our vessel Marquesa, then enjoyed an evening walk into
town for dinner. Saturday we celebrated at the Commodore’s
Ball. On Sunday we participated in the historic tradition of the
Blessing of the Fleet. The Flag Officers (Commodore Harvey
Ford, Vice Commodore Richard Winning, and Rear Commodore
Robert Birkenstock) and Past Commodore Bruce Watters,
officiated over the blessing of 24 boats this year (including 5
at the docks)!! Now those boaters and their vessels will have
tight lines, calm and following seas, full sails, shining tackle, full
tanks and engines that work (along with many other sea worthy
blessings). Many thanks to each of you who participated in this
historic traditional event, and a special thanks go to Larry and
Joy Wissing aboard Patient Wader for organizing the boats
that day and keeping things moving. After the Blessing, many
enjoyed the Jazz Brunch and the Car Show in the park (where
our own Randy & Vicki Stacy displayed their cars).
Our last cruise was in mid-October when the SPYC Cruising
Group traveled to the Bradenton Yacht Club for the weekend
of October 17 -19. Those making the trip by boat were: Roy
& Jeannie Chapman on Blue Eyes, Ed & Isabel Hanna on
Isabella, Kent & Marcia Larson on The Final One, Barbara &
Heber Weller on Clifton, and Angela & Brian Kowalik (along
with his parents) on Marquesa. Richard & Judi Phagan joined
us by Iron Dinghy on Friday when we had dinner in the club.
Saturday boaters enjoyed the area by taking a long walk to
Emerson Point, or venturing out in a kayak or dinghy for a low
profile tour of the area, and some of us went for a swim in the
heated pool. That evening we had our usual docktails aboard
Blue Eyes. Our plans for casual Saturday dinner in the Tiki Hut
were quickly changed when the no-see-ums convinced us to eat
inside in the lounge instead. It was another relaxing boating
weekend, thank you all for making the trip.

Upcoming events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy include:

• January cruise to our own downtown SPYC docks – January

There will not be a Fleet Meeting in December (we have our
annual holiday dinner party instead). Monthly Fleet Meetings
resume in January.
Looking ahead, our “frostbite” cruise in February will be to
Pasadena Yacht Club. Later, we will start preparing for our
annual May Commodore’s Cruise in the spring. We have great
boating weather now and it’s time to enjoy the water through
these events and our other planned cruises. As we have done
with all our cruises, sign-up opens first at the Monthly Meeting
and priority for those in attendance, and then later with the
Sailing Secretary and on the website after that time.

ctober brought perfect weather for golf with some of our Snowbirds returning
to enjoy our outings. On Thursday, October 23, we played a new venue for
the Golf Group. It was Fox Hollow Golf Club in Trinity. The course was a real
challenge and all who played would like to return for another round. The winning
team with a 68 was, Amory Sanders, John Arsenault, Paul Dziubek and Nancy
Strite. Second place went to David Bertauski, Joe Mansir, Barbara Casey and
Joe Hartman, and third was Jack Howard, Susan Arsenault, Robert Weir and Bob
Weingartner. Close to the Pin prizes went to Gene Strite, Paul Dziubek , Emmett
Coe and Joe Hartman. We all relaxed with a great lunch in the clubhouse.

Our speaker for the November meeting was our yearly favorite, Terry Decker, the
Golf Pro at St. Pete CC, where he has been for 20 years. Terry always enlightens
the group with his wit and expertise. He also provides golf clinics twice a year for
many of our members. This evening Terry talked
about how to enjoy practicing.
Our fabulous Christmas Party will be held in
December in lieu of our regular meeting.

Broad Reachers

O
n November 8th, the Broad Reachers
held the 43rd Annual Commodore
Lucas Invitational Pram Regatta! For
the second year in a row, the Lucas Cup
had to be sailed on the alternate date,
due to weather conditions. The 2014
Trophy was captured by Ann Carroll of the
Bitter Ends, Venice Yacht Club. Second
place was Holly Dowling of the Dunedin
Windlasses, followed by Salty Sister Tove
Kullman in third place. Many thanks and
appreciation to the boat handlers who
helped the 11 sailors change boats after
each of the six races. George Kullman and
Doug Clapp handled the race committee
duties on the water, until the engine on the
SPYC committee boat gave out. At the end
of racing, the marks had to be picked up
by the sailors. After a grueling morning
of light shifty winds, the sailors, helpers
and Race Committee retired to our PAG
clubhouse for a delightful lunch. The Lucas
Trophies were presented to the winners by
Alice Lucas & David Fagen, daughter-in-law
and nephew of founder Past Commodore
John Lucas.
Also due to weather conditions our “fun”
sail to Shell Key was postponed twice as
was our Halloween Race. But we did
manage a sail around Bird Key and did
some “sightseeing” up and down the
canals.
Joanne Simmons and Anne O’Dell
began our FWSA Interclub season sailing
races hosted by the Salty Sisters and the
Clearwater Bow Chasers. As October
begins the Interclub season, we look
forward to sailing and visiting other clubs
in the upcoming months.
The “Broad Reachers Saturday Sailing”
sign brought a lot of interest to our table
at the Member Appreciation Day at the
downtown club. The girls put together a
wonderful display table and several new
potential Broads expressed their desire
to sail with us.

“Beginning of the Year” party held on
November 15th at the home of Captain
Joanne Simmons and her husband
George on November 15th. Also we
will be having our annual Christmas Party
lunch and Chinese Auction on December
13th at PAG.

e are a group of members that go to a
different yacht club in the FCYC every
quarter for dinner. We have been doing this
for a little over a year, visiting Tampa Yacht
Club, The Field Club, and Carlouel Yacht
Club. Our last outing was in October at the
Bradenton Yacht Club.

The Holidays are upon us, how quickly the time goes. On
December 8th we will welcome the Tampa Opera and
their talented voices. This should get us in the mood for
Christmas Celebrations. Please make your reservations for
lunch at the PAG Club, 360-1646, you will not want to miss
this program.
The November meeting with the fabulous new fall and
holiday fashions from Patchington’s, was a big hit with our
members. Our lovely member models are to be thanked
for their time and efforts to make this program such a
success. Marcia Bye our Program Director, really hits the
mark with creating great programs.
We play Mah Jongg after meetings (third Monday of the
Month) and every Monday at 1PM at Pass- a-Grille. If you

Michael J. Tougias is an award-winning author of 20 books
including several true survival thrillers: Fatal Forecast,

Tougias has received the American Library Association “Editors
Choice” Award and the Independent Publishers “Best Nature
Book of the Year” award. Disney Studios is currently filming
