Here the new board of directors for the year 2008 - 2009. President: Ernst Stader Vice President: Edwin Albrecht Club Secretary: Gudrun Fuchs Club Treasurer: Helmut Grander Membership Treasurer: Brian Dimock Director Administration: Urd Grander Director Promotion: Rainer Stimming Director House & Property: Herb Albrecht Director Beverage: Hans Dieter Keuthen Director Rental: Gitta Ruppert Director Rental: Margot Turnbull The new board of directors would like to thank the election committee ( H. Henninger, Otto Heller and Peter Stenz ) for their help during the election, and were able to elect a new ( old ) board of directors in charge for another year. My message to the membership at the general meeting was probably not, what most of our members expected--perhaps a little too harsh for some, but it was the truth. We all have to live in reality, and by pretending, that everything seems to be fine is an illusion, and does not do us any good in the future. We have to face the facts, and this is as plain as can be said. We, the board, will try our best again to serve our membership in any way possible. Help is needed by everyone, members, supporting groups, and of course active groups. As I said, Club Loreley is the core, and everything affiliated with it, needs the core, otherwise no one can exist. I think, we all got the message. Now back to our general meeting with election of a new board. It was a pleasure to work with such a group of dedicated people for the last twelve month. I’m also a bit sad, we have lost two of our longtime board directors due to illness. Gerda Koepp and Karl Kreis, worked together as the rental committee, and they did a tremendous job over the years. Gerda was also involved in many more activities as far as the club was concerned and so was Karl. To maintain our club’s reputation, a lot of work is involved to keep the standard we are so used to over the years. Many of our members will miss the friendly person, who was always willing to help out wherever help was needed. Even if they are no longer members of the board, they are still there to help out wherever they can. To you Gerda, as I said in our last edition, and now Karl, our thanks from MIDWAY NISSAN Nicholas Schneider 1300 Dundas Street East, Whitby, Ontario L1N 2K5 Tel: 905.668.6828 ext. 106 Fax: 905.668.1162 5 the board of directors for many years of service and dedication, and I believe the rest of the membership is in agreement. I must admit, the approach to our membership in regards to early dues helped tremendously, and our membership treasurer was full of praise. In regards to our newspaper, I was approached by some of our members (mail service), they are satisfied with reading the newsletter on the internet to save on mailing expenses. Our web coordinator, Karl Vom Dorff would be willing to set something up, and with one click on the keyboard you are able to receive the news of Club Loreley. There is a list posted at the bulletin board, all you have to do is sign your name with your E-Mail address. So far, some of our members have phoned me up already not to send the newsletter anymore. As said, this only concerns the mailing part. We have probably approached another era as far as the board of directors is concerned, and this will most likely be the trend in the future. We will never see 14 or 15 people as board directors, this is a thing in the past, but in order to properly run Club Loreley, and conduct business as usual, a core is needed in the form of a president, vice president, and so on. This is where supporting groups come in, and are extremely important. In that regard, we are very lucky, let me introduce to you our new edition to our club. The rental committee with Gitta Ruppert as rental rep, Margot Turnbull as backup, both of them are also Directors of the board, with Peter and Gertrut Stenz as support. Also a decorating committee was created to look after club events, and will make sure our club keeps their name as the friendliest, and homiest of all clubs in our community. Please welcome Lisa Graham, Helga Scott, and Marianne Sellick. There are two more supporting groups we already have had for the last few years, you probably all know them, and they are the rifle group as maintenance crew ( leader Joe Friedrich ), and the newspaper group with Olaf Rudolph as editor, and a supporting team of Klemens & Else Denzel, Peter Stenz, and yours truly Ernst Stader. Also our Web coordinator Karl Vom Dorff, who does a tremendous job of updating and handling our website, has been for many years a volunteer in that field. Of course, all volunteers who help out whenever help is needed. This takes a heavy burden from the directors of the board, they can now concentrate entirely on their jobs which they are assigned too, and this makes it a lot more pleasant than before. This should make it also a lot easier task for future board directors, to make up their mind to run for a position as a board director, we hope. Again, we will have a clean up day May 31st at 8 a.m. weather permitting, anyone interested in helping out should get in touch with Joe Friedrich 9055579-2565. Let me also remind every member, our club will be closed again for two weeks, June 23rd. to July 3rd, right after Fiesta week. This time all activities have to be dismissed, due to the fact, the whole entrance will be paved by a contractor. A new door will also be installed, for better access to handicapped people. I would like to congratulate, on behalf of the board of directors, our Youth Dancers and staff for their excellent performance in Kitchener, and for bringing home the hardware. We are very proud of you, and as Holly said – Fiesta week here we come. Lets not forget, the Benefit Dance of the Youth Dancers on Saturday, May 10th. They need all your support. This is where Oshawa turns in to a festivity city and Club Loreley will again be part of it. Our youth dancers with staff are well prepared to take on the task, Chef Trevor with his selection of German and International Food will please the appetite of many customers. German beer from the keg will be a delight to many beer drinkers. We are also open for lunch from Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Needles to say, buy your passports at your club, for everyone sold, the club gets 50% of the income. ( see flyer for opening times of shows during the week ). Now to our special event on November 1st, this I will call the Highlight of 2008. A grand night with “ Dinner, Dance & Hit Parade “. A Music Star ( Schlagersinger) from Austria – Petra Boeck – has been booked to perform at Club Loreley. Ba- varian style Dinner (Pork Roast, Dumplings & Red Cabbage ) and of course Schnitzel Dinner will also be on the menu. Peter Beck and the Mississauga Express for our entertainment, a night everyone should be looking forward to. That’s why tickets are only sold in advance well ahead of time. More in our next edition. If you are connected to the internet, log on to www.petraboeck.com read her biography, and see for yourself how talented she is. The board of directors would like to thank the Ladies Auxiliary for their generous donation of $1000.00 to Club Loreley. Also a donation was received from Margret Staeger, and Dieter & Hannelore Johle, our thanks to both of you. On a sad note, Heinz Rottschaefer, at the age of 84, after a short illness has passed away. Heinz was a founding member of Club Loreley, and will be very much missed. Our condolence to his (brother in law) Klaus, and wife Christa, and family in Germany. This will be my report for the next two months, to everyone who in some way suffered due to illness, a speedy recovery, and we will see you at our next event at Club Loreley. With the best to all of you, Ernst Stader Vice President’s Report Ed Albrecht I hope everyone got over our long and hard winter. Now that spring has arrived we can start the yard work. Here at the Club we have a large project that will soon begin which will be the repaving of our driveway directly in front of the Club. With that said I wish to acknowledge that we are the recipients of a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The money we are receiving will also go towards a new automatic door opener to assist with our seniors and wheelchair members who have trouble opening the door. So that there is no inconvenience to our members the construction will take place during our two week shut down starting June 22nd, directly after Fiesta Week. I wish to thank the committee who spear-headed this Gerda Koepp, Gabriele Albrecht and myself. I know that all of the members will benefit from this. At the annual membership meeting on April 13th, the Board of Directors that was outgoing are the new Board again. We do have two new Board Members who will be greatfully appreciated in their role as hall rental committee. Please plan to attend the K.G. Loreley Youth Dancers Benefit dance on May 10th which will include the crowning of the 2008-09 Miss Loreley, Chathel Koepp and Mini Miss, Brieanna Wannack. 7 I wish to thank our 2007-08 Miss Loreley Elizabeth Gifford and Mini Miss Julie Otte for representing our Club. Just a reminder again, Fiesta Week is approaching and volunteers can start calling me to help with all aspects of this event. To offset the cost of the Float I am asking for donations for flowers. You can pick up a form from Wanda at Bar 2. I just wish to keep this report short at this time of year because I am very busy, but don’t hesitate to call me if you have any ideas for our club or wish to help out, 905-579-6803. Membership Treasurer’s Report Happy and Healthy Spring wishes to everyone. I am pleased to announce our newest members, Lilli Grau and her son Ralph Grau. As always, we welcome you to Club Loreley and we hope enjoy your experience at the Club. As of the Annual Membership meeting on April 13th, there are 164 out of 265 paying members who have paid their 2008 membership fees. For the benefit of those who have yet to pay, the amounts are $50.00 for single and $70.00 for couple or family membership. For those members who are not paid up to date, you will either be receiving an invoice by mail or your invoice has been inserted in this issue of the newsletter. If you submitted your payment after the writing of this report, thank you and please disregard the invoice. As stated by President Ernst Stader at the Membership meeting, the Club expenses have been outweighing the income so it is crucial for the day to day operation of the Club that everyone submits their fees in a timely fashion. You have numerous options available to you to look after getting your fees paid. Option 1- mail your cheque to Club Loreley addressed to the attention of the Membership Treasurer. Option 2- mail your cheque to my home address 1086 St. Andrews Court Oshawa L1H 8B5. Option 3- leave your cheque or cash with Wanda in the Member’s Lounge on Thursdays or Fridays. Option 4- when visiting the Club, ask any available Board member or Active Group leader to leave your payment in my mail slot in the office. Option 5- pay me directly when you see me at the Club. It is nearing that time of year again to enjoy Fiesta Week so I hope to see you at the ‘SCHNITZEL HAUS’ during that week. This year our Club celebrates its 20th Heimatabend Anniversary. The Heimatsänger began to organize this club event success fully for the last eight plus years and hopefully will do so in the near future A full report about this year’s event will be in the next club paper, because the May/ June report has to be send in not later than the April 20th, the date for Heimatabend is set for April 26th. So far this leaves me in the blues for now. All I can say, is that we have a nice program for your entertainment ready. We welcome Lilli Grau, who became a new member of our choir and wish her a long and happy stay with us. We remember our friend Gisela Krausel. Five month have already passed since one of our Heimatsänger, Gisela Krausel, had left us forever to enter a better place after a lengthy illness. God took her into his garden by ending her suffering on December 16th 2007. Gisela is very much missed by all of us and she will stay in our hearts. God saw you getting tired when a cure was not to be. So he closed his arms around you and whispered ”Come to Me.” You didn’t deserve what you went through so he gave you rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He only takes the best. We always will remember you. The Heimatsänger. Our deepest Simpathy Dearest Gitta, We’re so very sorry to hear from the passing of your grandson, especially at such a tender young age. Our prayers are with you and your Family. Let it be a comfort to you, knowing that we share your pain and sorrow. Keep your faith in the Lord and find strength in him. Love, and a big hug from your friends The Heimatsänger. Each year on the second Sunday in May we will celebrate Mothers Day, with this in mind I’d like to take the opportunity to wish all the Mothers of club Loreley a wonderful enjoyable, happy Mothers Day. Relax and let yourself be treated like a Queen ! Mother Day History Contrary to popular belief, Mother's Day was not conceived and fine-tuned in the boardroom of Hallmark. The earliest tributes to mothers date back to the annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many deities, and to the offerings ancient Romans made to their Great Mother of Gods, Cybele. Christians celebrated this festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent in honor of Mary, mother of Christ. In England this holiday was expanded to include all mothers and was called Mothering Sunday. In the United States, Mother's Day started nearly 150 years ago, when Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community, a cause she believed would be best advocated by mothers. She called it "Mother's Work Day." Fifteen years later, Julia Ward Howe, a Boston poet, pacifist, suffragist, and author of the lyrics to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," organized a day encouraging mothers to rally for peace, since she believed they bore the loss of human life more harshly than anyone else. In 1905 when Anna Jarvis died, her daughter, 9 also named Anna, began a campaign to memorialize the life work of her mother. Legend has it that young Anna remembered a Sunday school lesson that her mother gave in which she said, "I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother's day. There are many days for men, but none for mothers." Anna began to lobby prominent businessmen like John Wannamaker, and politicians including Presidents Taft and Roosevelt to support her campaign to create a special day to honor mothers. At one of the first services organized to celebrate Anna's mother in 1908, at her church in West Virginia, Anna handed out her mother's favorite flower, the white carnation. Five years later, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution calling for officials of the federal government to wear white carnations on Mother's Day. In 1914 Anna's hard work paid off when Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother's Day as a national holiday. At first, people observed Mother's Day by attending church, writing letters to their mothers, and eventually, by sending cards, presents, and flowers. With the increasing gift-giving activity associated with Mother's Day, Anna Jarvis became enraged. She believed that the day's sentiment was being sacrificed at the expense of greed and profit. In 1923 she filed a lawsuit to stop a Mother's Day festival, and was even arrested for disturbing the peace at a convention selling carnations for a war mother's group. Before her death in 1948, Jarvis is said to have confessed that she regretted ever starting the mother's day tradition. Despite Jarvis's misgivings, Mother's Day has flourished in the United States. In fact, the second Sunday of May has become the most popular day of the year to dine out, and telephone lines record their highest traffic, as sons and daughters everywhere take advantage of this day to honor and to express appreciation of their mothers. I Hope everyone will have a wonderful save summer. Enjoy each day to the fullest and make the best out of each situation. Life is too short to waste even a single minute with trifling matters. Until the next time, keep on smiling and have a happy song in your heart. Alfred Uhl Dear ‘Omas’ and ‘Opas’, here is a poem for all of you. Isn’t it the truth?? Alfred Uhl, is singing with Harfentöne in Toronto, and did watch his Grandchildren closely. As we all do. With pride and joy and all our love ♥ ♥ And now, here a few notes on our “Salute to Spring” dance as I promised. For March 15th 2008 the “Loreley Singers” had invited the “Harfentöne” of Toronto and the “Harmony United Church Choir” of Oshawa. And since on Saturday morning a meeting was held in our Club with quite a few members of the German-Canadian Choir Association, we also had guests in the evening from delegations of choirs from Windsor to Montreal. Too many to name all of them. But I have to mention our friend Ingeborg Randall-Cooke and her husband Gerald. These Two are the most dedicated Singer one can think of. They travel from Montreal to All functions and meetings of all the choirs in the DKSB. For years now. So a special “Kudos” to Ingeborg and Gerald from Montreal. ♥♥. And the evening went very well. 12 Our Monica waved and we, the “Loreley Singers” started a wonderful concert. We had a special guest soloist, Mr. Old Man River aka Ross Cotton to help us out with a song by Otto Groll Herrlicher Baikal. What a treat for our choir and all singers and guests present. Tim Southwell and his “Harmony United Choir” had us all enthralled with their Gospel music. It is such pleasure to listen and to watch these Singers. All of them had happy smiles on their faces. We are really looking forward to our Christmas Concert together. Then Alfred Schormann and his “Harfentöne” gave our ears a real treat. And when they sang a special song for Ingeborg, the hall was quiet, so quiet, one could almost hear a needle drop. And Ingeborg was in tears!! How sweet is that. All the men came together for the old and heart wrenching song ”Heimat”. A standard for every Choir Fest. And what a wonderful tradition it is. We also did honor our Otto Heller for 20 years of leading the “Loreley Singers” through thick and thin.. But what do you give a Man who has everything?? A gold watch?? A picture by Picasso?? Well……. we decided on a big bottle of wine and a lovely bouquet of flowers for Eleonore. ( I think, that went over ok.) And like always, our “Salute to Spring” evening was a success. Everyone had a good time with the singing, the dancing, the companionship, and last but not least, the eating. Chef Trevor surprised us again with a tasty meal. “A big thank you” to Trevor and his Kitchen staff. Helga Bodenweber had the good idea with the plates full of cookies on the tables as dessert, and the lovely flowers were a gift to the “Loreley Singers’ and their guests from our singer Ursula. Big hug, Ursula. ♥ I also would like to extend a “Thank you” to Ed Albrecht. Later in the evening Ed put on his music, dance melodies filled the hall and the dance floor was never empty. Of course, “a heart felt thank you” to all, who worked so hard behind the scene. There is so much work to be done for such an event and I just cannot mention all the names. So, to each of you: ”eine Blume fürs Knopfloch” ♥ ♫ I mentioned earlier, that we also did host a meeting for the German- Canadian Choir Association on Saturday morning, March 15. One of the many points, we talked about, was about a Book. Hans Förstel, President of the DKSB and member of the “Ottawa Male Choir” will be publishing a book by September 2008, (of course with the help of all the choirs) that will describe the life of the German-Canadian Choir Association and all the 16 member choirs from Montreal to Windsor for the last 50 years. A very lively and interesting book, full of stories and pictures of all the participating choirs. Now, works like that cost money, a lot of it. (The book has already an ISBN number for Library purposes.) If any one of you would like sponsor this project with a few dollars, please contact Otto Heller. Any amount will do. But if you feel very generous, $100 for instance will get your name in the book and you will get a tax receipt. Otto is the Treasurer for the DKSB and knows all about it. Thank you. And now we are practicing for the 26. April, “the Heimat Abend”. Many of you are back year after year and enjoy all that is presented. Poems, Songs, Sketches, Stories from our Germany and other lands etc…….. This year we will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of this event. Which was started as a “Sing Along” by the “Loreley Singers” in the members lounge so many years ago and is still going strong with the help of Tony Haas, Peter Stenz and Christel Petrowski in the big hall. So please, show up and celebrate with the “Loreley Singers”, “the Heimat Singers”, and all voluntary Performers a wonderful evening. Oh, and what else is new???? Ah yes………… 13 Our annual Yard and Bake Sale will be held at a different day. Saturday, May 10th is the big day. Rain or sunshine. We will be there. And just in case, you have marked already in your calendar the date for our Advents Concert, ( I know, it’s quite early to mention that) However, that date has changed also. We will be singing on Sunday, December 7th at 2:30 pm. (second Advents Sunday) And for our Erika Schö֊nerklee, we send best wishes for a speedy recovery. Erika is joining me as our newest “Bionic women”. Her new knee is doing fine and Erika will be with us soon enough. I just can see the two of us waltzing through “Club Loreley” and setting of the fire alarm with our ‘metal knees’. Our best wishes also go to Gerda Wiebicke, Hilde Balasch and Dietlinde Woodland. Take care, and we hope that you all come back soon. We miss you. So, and now I wish you all a sunny May, a warm and wonderful June and do not forget to sing, sing, sing,.…. ♫ ♫ ♫ All the Best ♥ Yours truly Helga G. PS: and before I forget it again. Very Happy Birthday wishes for two May and three June bugs. Keep fluttering and singing and have a wonderful “New Year”. Your very own!!! ☺ ♥ ☺ ♥ ☺ I found a very profound poem and would like to share it with all of you. The sense of humor is the oil of life’s engine. Without it the machinery creaks and groans. No lot is so hard, no aspect of life is so grim, that cannot be relaxed by a hearty laugh. G.S. Merrium 14 The 1st K.G. Loreley -Youth Dancers Holly Henninger What an incredible last couple of months our Youth dancers have had. Highlight for our Kinders, Juniors and Seniors was the Annual Manoeverball Competition held at the Concordia Club in Kitchener on April 5th. The last few weeks it has been more like summer and we really deserve the great weather after the long winter we just endured. Your Ladies Auxiliary is back at work for our Club. The Annual Meeting was well attended and the girls did a splendid job serving coffee and cake. Thank you Monica Mehler and all your helpers for overseeing the event. At our last meeting, we looked over our finances and decided we could donate $1,000.00 to our Club which represents many hours of work for our ladies. Monica presented the cheque at the Annual Meeting. I have accepted the position as head of the Ladies Auxiliary. After a year of training by the "girls" all I can say is, they are a "great bunch" and I am happy to serve them and our Club. It involves many hours of scheduling, daily pick-up in Scarborough of our fresh baked pretzels and putting on our best "Dirndl" (Austrian for Trachtden Kleid). We would like to wish Waltraut Haas the best birthday ever on May 28th. In June we have two "Austrian" birthdays, Friedl Fleischmann and my dear Mother Toni Blakolmer. In closing, I would like to wish all of our Mothers, a very Happy Mothers Day and hope to see you at the Club for brunch. I will be there with our family for good food and no clean up. What more could a mother ask for??? Maybe some flowers.
