The UNOH Battle at the Beach is held at Daytona International Speedway’s new 0.4- mile temporary short-track oval, and is a showcase of short-track racings top drivers. The pre-season special event is held in February, during Budweiser Speedweeks, and features two days of racing headlined by: the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tours, and the NASCAR Whelen AllAmerican Series late model division. The UNOH Battle at the Beach draws drivers from all over the world to the prestigious “World Center of Racing”, including race winners and series champions from the previous season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, as well as the top ten finishers in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series – all with locked in starting spots. In addition, the series champions from the previous season in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1, the NASCAR Mexico Series, and the Euro Racecar Touring Series all have locked in starting spots. The remaining field is set through heat races and qualifying. NASCAR lowered the competition age limit in the NWAAS to 14 years old with the introduction of the NASCAR Learner’s Permit. Current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton, Kurt Busch ,Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, and Jamie McMurray are all former drivers in the NWAAS. LOCAL RACING The NWAAS Rookie of the Year Award presented by Jostens honors a National Rookie of the Year as well as State and Provincial Rookies of the Year. The NASCAR Finalist Program recognizes the Top 100 drivers in NASCAR support divisions II-V with two classifications — dirt and asphalt. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards is held at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, NC and is streamed live on NASCARHomeTracks.com. Since its first season of competition in 1985, the modern-day NWMT has annually traveled to historic short tracks throughout the northeastern United States. Whelen Engineering has committed to a long term partnership as the series sponsor for both the NWMT and the NWSMT. The NWMT schedule features companion events with NASCAR’s national series at Bristol Motor Speedway and New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Six different drivers have earned the NWMT title in the last seven seasons. In 2012 nine-time NASCAR Modified Champion Richie Evans became the first individual - not primarily associated with the Sprint Cup Series to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. NWMT champions like Jeff Fuller, Donny Lia, Mike McLaughlin, Jimmy Spencer and Mike Stefanik have ridden to success in the upper levels of NASCAR racing, as have other tour standouts such as Brett Bodine, Ken Bouchard and Steve Park. The NWSMT travels to historic racing venues throughout the southeastern United States. The schedule also features companion events with NASCAR’s national series at Bristol Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway. The NWMT and NWSMT schedules annually include two combination events in which the two tours compete head-to-head. 15-year-old minimum age requirement has aided in the growth of both the NWMT and the NWSMT. In the first eight years of NWSMT competition, George Brunnhoelzl has won three championships (2012, 2011, 2009) and Junior Miller has won two. Brian Loftin, L.W. Miller and Burt Myers have each won one title. Both tours operate by the same rule book. The cars feature 625 horsepower (NASCAR-approved SPEC Engine is optional), have an estimated top speed of 150 mph, weigh 2,645 pounds (including driver) and run on Hoosier Tires. NASCAR WHELEN SOUTHERN MODIFIED TOUR A SISTER TOUR TO THE NASCAR WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR, THIS SERIES’ FENDERLESS RACE CARS OFFER A UNIQUE STYLE OF RACING FOR FANS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN U.S., WHERE FULL-FENDERED, LATEMODEL STOCK CAR RACING IS COMMON. The NKNPS-East has competed at historic short tracks and intermediate speedways up and down the Eastern United States since its inception in 1987. The two series also compete head-to-head in an annual combination event at Iowa Speedway. K&N has committed to a long term partnership as the series sponsor. Since 2006, The NASCAR Foundation has helped provide medical treatment for more than 24,000 children annually at Speediatrics, fulfilled more than 700 NASCAR Dreams, sent more than 1,200 kids to Victory Junction camp, recruited 12,000 fans to become part of a Volunteer Network and created educational opportunities for school-aged students that help to engage them in science and engineering programs. One on-track initiative is the NASCAR Green Clean Air Project. As the largest tree-planting program in sports, the NASCAR Green Clean Air Project plants ten trees for each green flag that flies during a designated NASCAR race, capturing 100% of the carbon produced during that race. The program debuted in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2009 and was expanded to include markets and tracks in the NASCAR Home Tracks program in 2011.
