Welcometo the 1000 Islands International Region
Tourism
Information
Experience a place
too good to be
anything but true…
Y
es; there really are a thousand islands
and that dressing comes from here,
but there’s so much more to this stunningly
beautiful freshwater paradise that you may
not believe it until you experience it for
yourself.
The 1000 Islands (pronounced “Thousand
Islands”) has been a vacation destination for
more than 100 years yet it still has an almostmystical reputation. First-time visitors are
awed to find that a place of real-life castles,
public lighthouses and nearly 2,000 islands
crammed into a mere 50 miles truly exists.
Visitors to this region settle into the
waterfront hotels, weeklong cottages and
riverside campsites before venturing onto
the St. Lawrence River and eastern Lake
Ontario. Tour boats have been meandering
through the islands for decades, giving
visitors an up-close look at this Gilded Age
vacation retreat. Today, visitors marvel at the
stark differences among the islands. Some
go on for miles and are home to multiple
year-round residents. Others have public
beaches, private camps and are home to
only eagles, osprey and other wildlife.
Private boaters find the waters of the
1000 Islands particularly accessible. Public
docking and launches are strewn about
vibrant downtowns and protected bays.
Lighthouses, castles, theatres, golf courses,
restaurants, campsites and more are all
accessible by water.
The 1000 Islands offers a bounty of
recreational activities from fishing and
diving to hiking, biking and more. You’ll find
a friendly, laid-back atmosphere that keeps
visitors coming back year after year. Peruse
the pages of this guide and learn about
some of the many ways to enjoy your visit.
Experience the 1000 Islands Region and find
yourself inspired and renewed!

approved for border travel or a NEXUS card for
frequent cross-border travelers.
Regulations regarding exemptions and restrictions for belongings or merchandise brought
across the international border exist. There may
be certain variable restrictions for taking alcohol,
tobacco products, certain foods, etc. across the
border. Please be prepared to declare all belongings and show receipts for purchases when
reporting to border agents for entry.
Immigration and customs requirements are subject to change without notice. We recommend
that you obtain and review current literature published by Canadian and U.S. Border Protection
Agencies prior to your visit.

around the world looking to spend some
time in the world-famous 1000 Islands
and on the St. Lawrence River. The city’s
roots trace back to just after the American
Revolution when displaced Loyalist refugees
settled and founded the first incorporated
village in Upper Canada.
Take a stroll or a bike ride along one of the
most accessible waterfronts in the 1000
Islands to view North America’s great inland
shipping route where gigantic cargo vessels
weave their way through the Brockville
Islands. Explore the Brock Tail, Canada’s
First Railway Tunnel, enjoy afternoon tea
on the veranda at Fulford Place Museum or
fire the cannon at Fort Wellington National
Historic Site. Do some shopping in one or
all of our fabulous boutiques, antique shops
or art galleries along King Street. Brockville
offers several excellent dining options in the
community including several choices in the
downtown.
Brockville has earned its reputation as
one of the world’s best freshwater scuba
diving destinations. Thanks to the crystal26
clear waters that reveal well-preserved
sunken ships -- from steel freighters to old
schooners -- thousands of divers explore
these shipwrecks in “Canada’s Caribbean”
every year.
THE AQUATARIUM
The Aquatarium is Brockville’s newest
tourism attraction and it will be opening in
2015! This interactive, learning and discovery
center is located at the foot of the Tall Ships
Landing at the base of Broad Street in the
heart of Brockville. At the Aquatarium,
a variety of interactive adventures and
experiences inspire critical thinking through
storytelling and play while cultivating an
appreciation of the unique history, culture
and ecosystems of the 1000 Islands region.

Cape Vincent, New York
T
ibbetts Point Lighthouse stands tall at
the very edge of Lake Ontario where
the Great Lakes system funnels into the
St. Lawrence River. The lighthouse is an
extension of Cape Vincent – the community
where lake and river meet – and a place not
to be missed by those who want to get an
up-close view of this majestic waterway.
Cape Vincent is a historic community that
takes great pride in its French heritage. The
colorful French Festival is held every year
near Bastille Day, the second weekend in
July. French pastries and bread are a must
while watching Napoleon lead the parade.
It was his brother Joseph who established
residence in the community in the early
1800s. It’s said that the French leader was
on his way to Cape Vincent to join his
brother before his defeat.
Where Lake
and River Meet
Visitors with a variety of interests enjoy
Cape Vincent all year round. Anglers
compete in several area warm water and ice
fishing derbies and visitors enjoy strolling
through the Village Green for concerts,
craft fairs, vintage auto shows and farmers
markets throughout the spring, summer
and fall. Scuba divers take advantage of the
river access from Waterfront Park.
Horne’s Ferry, the only international auto
passenger ferry crossing the St. Lawrence
River to Canada is located in Cape Vincent
and departs from May to October.
Wine enthusiasts traveling the Thousand
Islands-Seaway Wine Trail visit Cape Vincent
and The Cape Winery for wines created
from “northern” or “cold hardy” grapes that
thrive in the region’s climate.

Welcome to Clayton…
“Where the
tradition continues.”
Clayton, New York
This quintessential
river town has
undergone a revival
in recent years to
offer new places to
stay, dine and play
while still preserving
the nautical
traditions that has
made Clayton a
favorite among 1000
Islands visitors for
more than a century.
32
I
n 2014, Clayton welcomed the full-service
downtown 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel
with its more than 100 waterfront rooms
and sweeping view of the islands and
St. Lawrence River. Balance that with the
traditional family-run motels and fire-pit
and volleyball net cottage colonies along
the water and you learn why more and
more people are basing their 1000 Islands
vacation in Clayton.
The Thousand Islands Museum houses
a special exhibit on the world-class
muskellunge (muskie) that have been caught
in the waters surrounding Clayton. Fishing
is a long standing tradition in Clayton and
guides are available to take visitors onto the
water in pursuit of trophy fish. In fact, some
say it’s the local fishing community who
came up with the famous Thousand Island
Dressing that shares the region’s name.
The community is harvesting the fruitful
products of its inland properties and staking
a claim in the craft beverage market with a
new brewery and distilleries building on the
foundation set by Coyote Moon Vineyards
with its countryside tasting room and
waterfront lounge.
The Thousand Islands Arts Center showcases
handmade textiles and offers exhibitors
and workshops for seasonal and short-term
visitors. Private galleries and the Clayton
Opera House bring the arts to Clayton for all
to enjoy.
For visitors seeking an authentic 1000
Islands vacation, look no further than
Clayton and its museums that celebrate the
river culture of the area. The Antique Boat
Museum is home to North America’s largest
collection of wooden and classic boats,
many of which still venture onto the river!
Museum visitors can row a traditional St.
Lawrence skiff, take an antique speedboat
ride or learn skills including sailing, knottying and boat preservation.

Are there really 1,000 Islands?
YES!
We get this question all the time.
There are actually more than
1,800 islands (1,864 to be exact) located in
an approximately 50-mile archipelago that
makes up the Thousand Islands region! To
become an official part of the count, an
island must meet two criteria: it must be
above water 365 days a year and it must
support a living tree.
No island is divided by the international
border, meaning each is either wholly within
the United States or Canada. That causes
the international border to zig-zag across
the water instead of forming a straight line
between the two counties. In some places
along the St. Lawrence River, islands that are
very close are in different counties.
Each island has its own individuality with
features such as stately granite cliffs, soft
sand bays, tall dark pines and vibrant
maple trees. It’s a sightseer’s paradise.
About that dressing…
T
housand Island Dressing must
come from the 1000 Islands, right?
It sure does but don’t expect everyone
here to agree upon where within the
region it originated.
There are two prevailing beliefs
about how the dressing came to be.
Both origin stories take place on the
New York side of the 1000 Islands.
Alexandria Bay claims it was created
in a pinch aboard a boat owned by
George Boldt, builder of Boldt Castle.
Clayton residents attribute the dressing
to the wife of a local fishing guide.
bend your server’s ear while enjoying
Thousand Island Dressing with your

Researchers have investigated the
origin over the years and – in some
cases – the two stories are intertwined.

Legendary Fishing
G
enerations have come to fish the
waters of the great Lake Ontario and
the mighty St. Lawrence River. Salmon and
trout are favorites on the open water of
Lake Ontario, which also includes bass, pike,
walleye and panfish including tasty yellow
perch. The St. Lawrence River provides a
variety of fishing options such as deep-water
trolling along island shorelines, jigging secret
spots and casting in shallow bays.
The river and lake bays offer great winter
action; the 1000 Islands is an ice fishing
destination that draws anglers to drive from
hours away to land feisty northern pike
on tip-ups and perch and panfish by the
bucketful.
Don’t forget, late fall is prime musky season
in the 1000 Islands, but we recommend
going with an experienced guide when
pursuing these cunning monsters.

Watertown, New York
With its proximity

city of Watertown is a

T
he city of Watertown is the burgeoning
urban center of Northern New York,
with the modern conveniences of national
chain stores, restaurants and hotels coexisting with a healthy community of
independent shopping, locally owned
restaurants and recreational services that
provide local flair and a friendly atmosphere.
One of Watertown’s greatest treasures
- the Black River - is just steps from the
shops and restaurants of downtown’s
Public Square. Seven miles of whitewater
featuring 14 sets of class III and IV rapids
offer thrilling and reliable adventures from
spring through fall. The river has several

great play spots for kayakers and has hosted
national whitewater competitions. Every
year, thousands of visitors enjoy guided
whitewater rafting trips with professional
outfitters leaving from downtown
Watertown. Easily accessible trails offer
visitors the chance to bike, hike or fish along
the shoreline. Even better, you don’t have to
leave the city limits to find some of the best
outdoor experiences in New York.
The city’s beautiful Olmsted-designed
Thompson Park overlooks downtown, the
Black River Valley and eastern Lake Ontario.
Nestled in the park, you’ll find golfing,
swimming, tennis, playgrounds and the
New York State Zoo, the only zoo dedicated
to the bears, eagles and other animals of
New York State. The park’s vast picnic areas
and stone pavilions can be reserved for
private functions through the city Parks and
Recreation Department.
The park is said to be home to the
Thompson Park Vortex, an unexplained
phenomenon that supposedly teleports
visitors – unharmed – to another location
within the park without explanation. The
location is said to move within the park and
visitors enjoy searching for it.

Watertown is one of New York’s fastest
growing cities. Many newly constructed
national retail stores and restaurants have
sprung-up in the past few years. With its
abundance of lodging options, Watertown
is quickly becoming a popular shopping

Watertown is proud to have as its neighbor,
Fort Drum, which is home to the Army’s 10th

soldiers and their families are stationed at
Fort Drum and many find this region an ideal

atertown and Northern New York are
proud to have Fort Drum and its 10th
Mountain Division as their neighbor. Fort
Drum’s soldiers, families and civilian support
staff total approximately 30,000 people.
With so much going on in their back yard,
the small-town communities around the
fort have flourished with hotels, bed-andbreakfasts, motor speedways, agricultural
attractions and parks that can be enjoyed by
everyone.
Fort Drum has been used as a military
training ground since 1908. The
communities that surround it have long
been home to sprawling rural farms. While
that’s still much the case, communities
such as LeRay, Carthage and Great Bend
have seen chain and private hotels – as
well as B&Bs – emerge. The nearby Indian
River Lakes are home to scores of waterside
cottages that can be rented by the week for
a cozy, quiet fishing or boating retreat.
The wide range of accommodations
compliments a growing number of
attractions that includes an alpaca farm, a
petting ranch and wineries. The Thousand
Islands-Seaway Wine Trail passes through
small towns Philadelphia and Theresa before
swinging along the St. Lawrence River.
