Well, the good news is that Wegmans Apple Juice
made from concentrate is no longer from China.
The switch was made three months ago, but it
took a while to use up existing inventory. Earlier
this year, Wegmans Frozen Apple Juice Concentrate
was moved from China too.

Why isn’t concentrate being produced here? U.S.
growers began switching years ago to supplying
fresh apples, as demand increased, bringing a
higher return to them. If apples aren’t grown for
processing, it’s for applesauce or apple cider, but
not for a low-cost commodity like concentrate.
Where is our juice coming from now? Not the U.S.;
it’s currently from Argentina, but surprisingly, the
cost increase is only a few cents more than China.

In recent decades, it became common to source
suppliers globally. And China often was chosen,
because of very low costs. For our own brand,
there was due diligence on selected vendors, but
there is increasing worry (from both customers
and Wegmans folks) about food safety systems in
that country. Melamine in pet food and in infant
formula caused confidence in that country’s
food safety system to plummet. Combine that
with concern about jobs in the U.S. and it’s not
surprising that some consumers are choosing not
to buy products from China. We’re listening and
responding wherever we can.
