Buninyong residents & visitors have a new
landmark to assist them navigating the
byways of this picturesque Ballarat
suburb with the installation of the public
artwork Buninyong Bivium, crafted by
Melbourne artist Cliff Burtt.
A partnership between Council’s Public Art
& Community Engagement initiatives, the
work is inspired by topographic mapping as
well as Aboriginal and gold rush stories of
the Mt. Buninyong area.

Council’s Public Art - Community Engagement

unveiling of Hidden Waterway, a series of 20
carved boulders created through collaboration
between Castlemaine artist Forrest Keegel, local
residents, and Harcourt stone sculptor Joe Pratt.
The works now grace Pennyweight Park in
East Ballarat, depicting the flora & fauna
indigenous to that area of the city.

Ballarat gave Winter a big push-along and
the dark a run for its money with the launch
of the Ballarat Laneways Lumieres - light &
sound installations designed to add joyous
colour & noise to the 2016 Ballarat Laneways
Festival and Ballarat Winterlude. And we
let the Universe know we were in business,
too, when Feast of Crows cranked up the
volume, Cr. Des Hudson declared Laneways
Festival open, and the Lumieres blazed forth.

Presented in association with Council’s Youth
Services FReeZA & SONIKA live music initiatives
and opened by Cr. Amy Johnson, the
Ballarat Laneways All Ages Gig on the
Saturday afternoon lured 100 young punters
away from Pokemon Go and into the house to
enjoy the creme de la local emerging bands in
a drug-, alcohol-, and almost smoke-free
setting...barring the surprise smoke machine
that brought the show to a temporary halt &
quick evacuation.
With the Art Gallery alarms re-set, the show
continued & rolled into the evening’s Ballarat

Contrary to the conventional thinking of leftside-of-the-brain = Creativity; right-side-of-thebrain = Rationality, artists are unique in that their
profession forces them to straddle the world of
the intellect and the realm of the senses.
Yes, the eventual works flow from instinct &
imagination set in a subliminal world of
connections and the celebration of sensation.
Simultaneously, that immersive experience is
made possible by deep conceptual thinking,
by careful planning, and by exercising the
resilient muscle-memory developed by hours of
practice, practice, practice.
Savour, in Backspace Gallery from 4 – 14
August, features works by two artists whose
careers illustrate this dichotomy: both are lifelong creators in their own right, and both are
also teachers whose role it is to articulate why
and assist emerging artists in developing how to
create art expressive of thought & skill.
Joining forces, Sue Sedgwick and Jo Ruchel
present a collection of diverse artworks
demonstrating the rigour involved in creation
that appeals to the sensualist as much as the
aesthete.
The pottery of Jo Ruchel is made for touching,
reflecting her love of things that have been
made with care by hand and with a strong
sense of the material. Ruchel approaches
wheel throwing as an act of meditation. Apart
from fashioning works of a practical beauty
whose use & display bring joy, the textured
forms she creates tempt you to run your fingers
over the surfaces & cradle the pieces in
your hands.
Sue Sedgwick began by using art as a way of
seeing the world anew; more recently, she has
become more interested in translating what she
sees – the way the light falls, the relationship of
shapes to one another, the effect of colours –
into how those elements make her feel.
Capturing what lies before her, Sedgwick uses
her considerable skills to express how the
tangible can be made to speak of poetry and
elusive memory.
Offering ‘…delectable paintings, drawings &
pottery…’ Savour is an invitation to revel in the
material world and to practice the art of living
Savour is a collaborative project reflecting on
the deep satisfaction to be found in touch,
sight, smell & sound.

Four Sisters in Backspace Gallery
18 - 28 August,
is a testament to the power of women:
in this instance, the juggernaut of
four siblings from four different places
working to showcase the range of
their diverse artworks
in each of their home districts.
Spread between Violet Town, Barwon Heads,
Donald & Ballarat, the artists Margaret Block,
Jo Malham, Barbara Toogood & Lynette Weeks
have successfully exhibited individually for a
number of years. Mounting the Four Sisters project marks the first time that they have
combined efforts to show their work together.
From early this year, the sisters have mounted a
series of exhibitions highlighting their four very
different approaches to making art across the
disciplines of pastel drawing, textile art, painting,
photography & quilting.
Coming from a long line of stitchers, Margaret
Block concentrates on exploring traditional and
modern approaches to quilting. Margaret’s
recent work has become increasingly
experimental, incorporating hand-dyed &
painted materials and digital photo
manipulation into abstracted pieced quilts.
Jo Malham also considers herself an
experimentalist, creating artworks that are a
fusion of painting, sculpture & digital images.
Drawing on nature and life experiences, Jo
investigates themes around the precariousness
and uncertainty of life.
Coming later to the creative life, Barbara
Toogood has plunged into mapping the
changing moods of pastels, charcoal, pencil,
watercolour & ink. Primarily working with
representational forms, Barbara nonetheless
plays with a wide range of styles, keeping her
imagery fresh and appealing.
A contemporary art quilt maker, Lynette Weeks
incorporates both nature and the manmade
into her designs. Traditional blocking and handstitching complement her tonal experiments
and digital imagery, resulting in panels that
bridge the realm between traditional pieced
works and abstract paintings.
Though the artists of Four Sisters follow divergent
paths, they have chosen to come together
both in mounting this group show and in
creating works that share similar concerns. One
such exercise sees the artists each presenting a
piece on a botanical theme – an exercise
illustrating their singular approaches to making
art, their shared love of the natural & the
material world - and of each other.
