RMS Times - Fall 2012
The Student Newspaper of Rochester Montessori School Fall 2012 RMS Times is a newspaper built by our Montessori children which allows them to express themselves through their stories and art. Thanks to our student editors Chris Kane and Nico Grothey for their contributions. Title design contributed by Henry Harris, brother to RMS student Rosalind McKinley. Henry is a junior at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. ________________________________________________________________________ Ancient Egyptian Gods and goddess by Rayyan Ahmad Nassr Anubis: Anubis is the son of Set the god of evil and Nephthys. Today, the German car company Volkswagen owns Bugatti. The only car it produces is the Veyron 16.4, which is the most expensive and fastest car in the world. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse costs $2.5 million. It has 1,200-horsepower quad-turbo engine and the top half of the car is painted white and lower half is new light blue. 300 cars have been sold. Each part of the Veyron 16.4, even the screws, is made of the material with the lowest weight like titanium, carbon, magnesium. It can reach 250 mph. At that speed, you can travel the length of one and a quarter football fields per second or one-third as fast as the speed of sound. ________________________________________________________________________ Courtney Gill by Audrey Cloft Courtney Gill has no siblings, but she does have a dog, Pisco. In fact, one of her hobbies is walking him. Some other hobbies include reading, spending time with friends and family, and drinking coffee. Her birthday is on September 5th, I bet you forgot to say happy birthday! Courtney’s favorite color is purple and her favorite sport is basketball. Her favorite singer is Adele, and her favorite place is Rochester, Minnesota. Another one of her favorite places is Chile. If she could go anywhere, it would be Chile, to go see the family that she stayed with for a while. You might have noticed that Courtney is bilingual (she speaks two languages), and she also has been to 7 countries. Another fun fact about her is that she didn’t learn to swim until she was 14 years old. A while after Courtney could swim, she had some jobs, and one of them was working in Kohl’s. She has always dreamed of being a teacher, “I’ve wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember.” Courtney said. In elementary, she even taught American Girl Dolls math, and other subjects. She achieved her dream of being a teacher after attending college at Luther College, in Iowa. She now teaches in E1. ________________________________________________________________________ Monaco by Jude Amra This summer, I visited the French Riviera, which includes several towns along the coast of southern France. I learned interesting facts about the city of Monaco. The principality of Monaco is an individual independent state under the guardianship of France. There is only a road separating Monaco from France. Monaco is a tiny city with an area of less than one square mile. It is ruled by Prince Albert the 2nd. Its ruling family has a rich history dating back centuries. There are about 30,000 people living in Monaco with Monte Carlo considered to be its largest city. ________________________________________________________________________ RMS Times Fall 2012 -2- ________________________________________________________________________ It was fun being in Turkey by Ilkim Taner My sister, Biricik, and I were born in the United States, but both of my parents are from Turkey. My grandparents and my mother’s brothers and my cousins still live there. They visit us here in Rochester from time to time. My family and I go to Turkey to see and spend time with my grandparents and cousins. My most recent trip to Turkey was this past summer. I was very excited about our trip. My mother told me that the whole trip from Rochester to my grandparents’ house would be about 26 hours. Yes, the flights were very long! In Turkey, we were in a city called Gaziantep. I stayed at my grandparents’ house. I like to spend time with my grandparents because I love them and because they play with me all the time and let me eat a lot of chocolates – the kinds that we cannot find here in the United States. I also get to watch television. Sometimes it is difficult to understand some Turkish words they say in the cartoons though. I celebrated my birthday at a big dinner with my family in Turkey. We had lots of food and a special “Angry Birds” birthday cake. It was so much fun. My cousins, their friends and I played at the park. It was good to meet with new kids. They thought that I spoke Turkish in a funny way – but that was OK. We also spent some time couple days in Arsuz. Arsuz was so beautiful. Biricik and I swam in the sea, collected sea shells, watered the plants (and ourselves) and played in the garden. I also made a new friend. My new friend’s name was Doruk. Doruk and I played with the ball a lot. I felt bad (and cried a little) when we were at the airport on our way back to Rochester. I wanted to stay longer in Turkey. I wish we could visit Turkey more often. It was fun being in Turkey! ________________________________________________________________________ My visit to Phillip Island, Australia by Sam Scalzo When I went to Australia I went to many places, such as Phillip Island. When I was at Phillip Island I went to an old farm, the penguin parade and a koala center. At the farm I milked a cow. I also saw a sheepdog rounding up sheep and I looked at baby animals. The baby animals I saw were sheep and cows. I also looked at the old farmhouse; the adult bed was smaller than my twin bed. After the farm I went to our hotel to check in to our rooms. After resting at the hotel I went to see the penguin parade. Small penguins walked up the beach to their nests. They looked so cute. There were a lot of people at the penguin parade, it is a popular activity. The next day we went to the Koala Conservation Center. We walked on raised platforms to see the koalas. My favorite part about the koala center was seeing a mom and a baby koala together. On my trip to Phillip Island I did lots of new things. ________________________________________________________________________ RMS Times Fall 2012 -3- ________________________________________________________________________ The Unusual Tiger by Katherine Zhu Once upon a time there was a tiger with brown stripes and red fur. Everyone laughed at her. She was so different from the rest of them. One day she could not stand it anymore and she ran away. Then she met a wise old owl, he said “god made you in a unique way”! Now she was very happy! When she came back everyone laughed at her again, but she did not care. She remembered what the owl said and she was even happier than before! ________________________________________________________________________ The Fall Season by Laila Abulseoud The Fall is here. The trees are colorful as I walk through the lake. I smell the fresh air. I hear the birds are singing overhead. The maple tree leaves turn red, orange and yellow and are falling on the ground. I like the fall better than winter because the winter is cold, and all of the sudden everything turn white. ________________________________________________________________________ My trip to Egypt by Zakariya Nassr I went to Egypt by airplane this summer. I went with my brother and my mom and we stayed there for six weeks. We visited Cairo, Asyut, and Alexandria, and stayed with our family. In Cairo we saw a mosque that was 750 years old. It was at Muhammad Ali’s citadel. We also rode horses and camels at the pyramids. We got to go inside the king’s pyramid and we saw the Sphinx. The weather was really hot so we had to keep drinking freezing water to keep cool. We went to Asyut to visit our great grandmother who is our moms’ fathers’ mom. We were only able to go out at night because the weather was cooler at night and the sun was too hot to go out during the day. We sat by the Nile, and had ice cream every night. We went to Alexandria with our cousins from Chicago. We got there by train, it only took two hours. We got to our hotel and changed into our swimsuits and went to the beach. We all got stung by jellyfish! It really hurt. The next day we were able to go to a beach that did not have jellyfish and we had a lot more fun there. We had dinner when it got dark. We had roasted corn from the street and my cousin and I were able to help the man fan the fire. Everywhere on the streets people sold prickly pears and they were delicious. I also enjoyed drinking sugar cane juice, and I would drink it every time I went out. I had a really fun time in Egypt but my favorite part was getting to see the pyramids while riding a camel. ________________________________________________________________________ RMS Times Fall 2012 -4- ________________________________________________________________________ Zip lining in Costa Rica by Ella Hopkins When you go zip lining in Costa Rica you ride on a bus to the area where you go zip lining. You get a vest on and you walk up stairs and when you get to the top of the stairs you reach the first zip line. The first zip line I did with a guide. After that, I went on some zip lines by myself. The longest zip line was nearly 1 kilometer long. There were 10 zip lines all of them were pretty long except the first and second. You go over a waterfall but you land on a platform of wood. One time when my mom was on a zip line and she screamed. My favorite part was going on zip line number 10, why because it was the longest zip line. When we got to the last one I wanted to do them all again. If you ever get to go zip lining I would recommend it. ________________________________________________________________________ Finding Nemo 3-D by Martin Gardner From the people Behind A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc, Wall-E and Brave comes Finding Nemo. The story of the movie from the Cinemagic website begins like this: “Life along the great Barrier Reef is full of dangers when you are a tiny clownfish. And for Marlin, a single parent determined to protect his only son Nemo there are constant fears and anxieties. When on his 1st day of school Nemo defies his Father and swims off alone to investigate a boat he is suddenly scooped up by a diver as Marlin helplessly watches. Marlin turns desperate as he frantically swims off in search for his son. As he passes a school of fish he bumps in to Dory an agreeable blue tang with severe short term memory loss who offers to help. Together this aquatic odd couple set out on an impossible mission finding themselves in troubled waters and contending with such hazards as sharks deadly anger fishes and a forest of jellyfish. Meanwhile, in a dentist’s office overlooking Sydney Harbor, Nemo has landed in a fish tank that is home to a colorful group of characters who want to initiate him into their gang. “ Sorry this Dory is not played by Ellen DeGeneres. I would not recommend it to real young children because there are some intense images. I would recommend it to five and older. Dory makes the movie really funny and it has fabulous smooth music by Thomas Newman. Other titles from the makers of Finding Nemo are: The Toy Story Trilogy- 1995, 1999 and 2010 Cars Double Movie 2006 and 2011 Ratatouille 2007 Monsters INC 2001, (which I will be reviewing when it comes out in 3-D on December 19th). ________________________________________________________________________ RMS Times Fall 2012 -5- ________________________________________________________________________ Fiction Stories by Olivia Dyrbyewright In Columbia there was a man by the name of John Canton. Dependent on plenty of light and water the seed grows roots if the temperature is favorable. The roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil and bring them to the rest of the flower. As the flower grows it develops stems and leaves above ground. When the plant is mature it makes blossoms (a process called flowering). Flowers are important for the plant to reproduce. Pollen is necessary to fertilize the flower to make seeds. Insects and bees transfer pollen from one flower to another. The flower wilts over time, releasing the seeds to the ground or the wind to start the life cycle of a flower over again. ________________________________________________________________________ Fall by Emma Van Meter Fall is so nice All the colors on the trees Yellow, orange, red And just the right amount of breeze. ________________________________________________________________________ RMS Times Fall 2012 -6- Cartoons and Drawings By Danny Berglund By Emma Van Meter RMS Times Fall 2012 -7- Chris Kane Nico Grothey Conor Kane – part 2 Conor Kane – part 1 RMS Times Fall 2012 -8- Quinn Kallmes RMS Times Fall 2012 -9- Crossword RMS Times Fall 2012 - 10 - Jokes Emily and Elizabeth Wetzel RMS Times Fall 2012 - 11 - ________________________________________________________________________ Jokes by Shawn Jacobson Jokes have been around for 4000 years.
