Lezginka Dance Company—Spectacular!
By Tricia L. Adams, LA CDD Community Director
From Russia comes one of the most masterful dance
productions in the world — at Lake Ashton for one show only
October 27 at 7 p.m. The world-class Lezginka ensemble
offers an extensive program of the fiery dances reflecting the
mountain country of Russia. The dances express boundless
love for one’s native land, a country’s heroic past and
wonderful present and the universal struggle for happiness.
The program comprises a broad variety of traditional dances
performed with a modern twist. The audience will be struck
by the innovative choreography and elaborate costumes. The
stage interpretation of traditional folklore motifs, the dancers’
outstanding mastery and talent along with the novelty of the
subjects of the dances, leave a lasting impression with the
audience. Truly, this is a program that brings forth Russia’s
culture and traditions in a brilliant performance.
Those who enjoy watching Dancing With The Stars or So You
Think You Can Dance, will appreciate the opportunity to see a
professional dance company with international acclaim live
and in-person on the stage in the Lake Ashton Ballroom.
“The troupe has a superb discipline of style and
technique . . . it’s dances are fresh, with patterns different
from those seen in America.”

Society—a totally No-Kill Shelter.
Top Dog/Top Cat Contest
By John Sawyer
The Pet Carnival’s Top Dog and Top Cat Contest is
underway. Through the Pet Carnival on November 19, you
will be able to register your pet or cast votes for your favorite

announced during the Pet Carnival.
NEW THIS YEAR! Don't forget about the drawing at

chosen. At the following week's Monday Coffee, that person
and their pet can savor one minute in the limelight to strut
their stuff, campaign and plug their Top Dog/Top Cat entrant.

Think about the areas in America known for a certain genre of
music. For example: New York and Broadway, Jersey Shore
and DooWop, Detroit and Motown, Nashville and Country,
Philadelphia and Bandstand, Southern California and Beach
Music.
Residents of Lake Ashton are all invited to attend the general
meeting for next year’s Performing Arts Showcase. If you are
creative, love to perform, have an idea for a comedy skit, play
a musical instrument, dance or sing, we need you to attend the
meeting on October 6 at 3:30 p.m. in the Ballroom. The word
“talent” has been replaced with “performing arts,” so that
more of you will join in the fun and meet new people. All of
you have a gift to make others smile, so hope to see you there!

Greening Up All Over!
By Mike Holden, ARC Chair
The rains have finally come and things are growing and
greening up all over looking full and lush!
Yards are looking green and healthy again. If your lawn is not
looking full and lush, there’s probably something not right,
and you should be discussing that with your lawn maintenance
company! With all the growth, there are new issues, of
course! There are a number of locations in Lake Ashton where
trees and parts of trees seriously overhang the streets and cart
paths. This can cause vehicles to swerve to avoid them, and
some of us are not as agile as we used to be in getting out of
the way! Fronds and branches can scratch paint on vehicles
and cut skin on unsuspecting passengers! If you have any like
that on your property, please direct your tree maintenance
people to trim the fronds back away from our roads and cart
paths for safety!
In some cases there may be a need for the HOA to work with
others to trim up the trees on common areas. Please feel free
to refer any you see like that to your ARC Representatives for
follow-up action.
As always, your Architectural Review Committee is looking
for a few more volunteers! Let us know if you can help us in
keeping LA looking good!

fall. Attend those you can to bone up on the many and varied
rules of this challenging game. Also, new merchandise is
arriving at the Pro Shop. Matt is aggressively initiating new
ideas. He is also taking a leadership role in the Eagle's Nest
where we will be hosting our October 11 luncheon.
At the last Board Meeting, extensive discussion was held
regarding the LALGA budget. The discussions will continue
throughout the year to provide equity for the disbursement of
LALGA funds from dues. Happy golfing, may you be blessed
with only fairways and greens.

We have six chairs on order for both of the parks. Pebble
Beach has had its first fire ant treatment and will probably
have one more before the Fall.
Thanks to those who have made donations. We will, in the
very near future, be planting some mature shade trees at the
Pebble Beach Park in memory of Jeff Salvin. We appreciate
everyones effort to keep our parks clean. Please also

Pet Co-op
By John Sawyer
The October Pet Co-op dinner will be held on Wednesday,
October 12 in the Ballroom. This will be our first meeting
without benefit of the restaurant or bar. Hopefully the new
restaurant and bar will be able to serve us in November.
Happy hour begins at 5 p.m. and will be BYOB. The dinner
is at 6 p.m. and will be catered by Sonny’s Bar-B-Q. The
menu will be pulled chicken or pulled pork, coleslaw, baked
beans, macaroni and cheese, cornbread, garlic toast, peach
cobbler or apple cobbler. Tea, lemonade and coffee will be
provided. The cost is $14 per person which includes gratuity.
Payment must be made at the dinner by either cash or a check
made out to the Pet Co-op.
Guest speaker will be Denny Mitchell, a goodwill
ambassador from the Big Cat Rescue in Tampa. Big Cat
Rescue is the world’s largest and most diverse collection of
rescued exotic cats. Denny will tell us all about Big Cat
Rescue and how you can tour this amazing place. He will
also answer any questions you have about Big Cat Rescue
and its more than 100 big cats. There will be a raffle of
several “special items” at the dinner, which will benefit the
Big Cat Rescue.
Don’t forget, you don’t have to own a pet to attend the
meeting. All animal lovers are invited to come hear about
this amazing place that is located right in our backyard. You
can still sign up at the Clubhouse Activities Desk or online at
ashtonliving.net to attend the meeting. Because of the outside
catering, reservation must be made by October 9.
Note: The Pet Table needs your donations. Any pet related
articles will be greatly appreciated. Donations can be picked
up or dropped off. Any questions, or to arrange a pick up,
please call Alva Birnbaum 318.9641, Ann Northcutt

Health and Wellness Update
By Kristie Renardson, RN CPT,
Health Concepts
FAT LOSS MYTHS
Information from Sports
Workout Weekly; Nick Nillson
Fat-loss is a topic that is just rife
with myths, misconceptions, and
incorrect beliefs. Here are five
common fat-loss myths that
could be holding you back from
achieving the fast, effective
fat-loss your body is actually
capable of.
Fat-Loss Myth #1 – Diets
Don’t Work
Diets actually quite often DO work (even the Hollywood
South Beach Crab Taco Cookie Diet). It’s just what happens
AFTER the diet finishes that’s the problem. The metabolism
has been slowed down by prolonged low caloric intake
without proper training. And then when the person goes back
to their “normal” eating, they go back to their NORMAL
eating…the eating that added the extra fat in the first place.
A “diet ” is a tool that can be used short-term for a specific
purpose. The LIFESTYLE is what you do when you’re not on
a specific diet and THAT is where people generally go wrong
and then blame the diet.
Fat-Loss Myth #2 – Eating Very Low-Calorie is Bad For
Fat Loss
Another outright myth…eating very low calories (and even
complete fasting) can be very GOOD for fat loss. It creates a
much bigger caloric deficit, which in turn forces the body to
rely on stored fat for energy.
The trick here is that you don’t want to eat very low-calorie
like that for LONG…never more than a few days. When you
eat very low-calorie for long stretches, THAT is when you run
into trouble with metabolic slowdown.
Fat-Loss Myth #3 – “I Want To Get Toned”
NO training is going to get you “toned” because that doesn’t
exist. Getting “toned” simply means building muscle and
burning fat. You can’t tone a muscle any more than you can
paint a cloud. You have to build the muscle to have it and you
have burn the fat so you can see it. To really make a
difference in shaping muscles, you have to lift a weight that is
challenging but not one that could injure.
22│LA Times  October 2011
Fat-Loss Myth #4 – High-Rep Light Weight Training is
the Best Training Style to Burn Fat
Here’s the thing…light weight, high-rep training CAN be
effective for burning fat while preserving muscle IF you do it
correctly. If you flail around and don’t push yourself, you
won’t see results.
The key to achieving results is that you have to push yourself.
This isn’t light-weight EASY high-rep training that
accomplishes nothing. This is HARD -light-weight, high-rep
training that burns while you’re doing it, prolongs that burn
then makes you end your sets because you can’t hold onto the
weight any longer.
Fat-Loss Myth #5 – To Lose Fat You Have to Totally
Deprive Yourself of the Foods You Love
Totally wrong. You DO have to CONTROL yourself and not
let food control you, but the LAST thing you want to have in
your head while you’re dieting is that you’ll never be able to
eat the foods you love again.
And that is where the concept of the “cheat meal” or “free
meal” comes in. When you’re on a fat-loss program, you
actually SHOULD have a cheat meal where you eat those
foods that you LOVE to eat but are probably terrible for you .
The key is that you PLAN when you eat these foods – you
don’t ever let it happen by accident.
Take Note ! Additions to the Group Fitness Classes at the
HFC Community Center
Attendance at all group fitness classes is picking up. We love
it! You can look forward to two classes coming back in
October. Kim Zimmerman will be teaching ZUMBA on
Mondays at 1 to 1:45 followed by YOGA at 2 p.m. So have a
light lunch and meet Kim on the dance floor at the HFC!
Laurie Heaverly and Brittany Amann shared a great
presentation in September on Personal Training, general info
and benefits. There are four Certified Personal Trainers on
staff at Health Concepts….Kim Zimmerman, Laurie
Heaverly, Brittany Amann, and myself. Our approach is very
similar and can be modified to help you meet your fitness
goals. Visits are 6 for $270 or 8 for $335. A three session
“Pump up Your Current Program” (for those already
committed to a fitness routine) is available for $125.
