The Victoria Recreation Center offers a resident membership to anyone that works (full/part time) or owns a business in the City of Victoria. All membership categories will apply. Open Gym Through May 31, 2016 Monday-Friday, 7:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, 8:00-10:00 p.m. June 1 - August 31, 2016 Monday-Friday, 7:00-9:00 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Gym users must be supervised by an adult if they are under 10 years old. Open Gym is FREE to residents on Tuesdays and Saturdays. All users must be a member or pay the daily fee (see page 2) to use Open Gym. Please sign in at the Front Desk. Open Skate Health Reimbursement The Victoria Recreation Center is now accepting the Silver and Fit Basic Membership. Check with your health insurance carrier to see if you qualify. Medica, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UCare, Preferred One and Health Partners Frequent Fitness membership discounts are available for those who are eligible. Register your party with the City to have special guests stop by and say hello. Special guests may include: a Carver County Sheriff Deputy, the Victoria firefighters and a fire truck, the Carver County Mounted Posse and others. Community Events Movies in the Park Summer 2016 Victoria Lions Park Movies begin at dark Yappy Hour Follow fido to Yappy Hour, a cocktail party for canines and their companions held in Victoria Lions Park. Hounds and pups enjoy complimentary dog biscuits and lapping up refreshing libations. Yappy Hour is a casual gathering for dogs of all sizes; we just ask that your pups be current on their shots and that you have your paperwork handy. No pre-registration necessary. Session 1: Thursday, May 19 Session 2: Thursday, August 4 5:30-7:30 p.m. Free Victoria Lions Park – Ice Rink (near the playground) Join us for a family friendly bike ride spanning from Victoria to Chaska on city and county trails. After the ride enjoy live music, log rolling, archery, bounce house and more! Concessions will be available. Entry to ride includes event t-shirt, meal ticket (hot dog, chips, and beverage) and entry into the raffle. Community is welcome to the after ride bash. Event details and to register go to chaskacommunitycenter.com or ci.victoria.mn.us This collaborative event is organized by Caver County Parks, City of Chaska Parks and Recreation, and City of Victoria Parks and Recreation. Saturday, June 18 Ride begins at 9 a.m. in Victoria. Community after-ride bash to follow until noon at Chaska Fireman’s Park Cost: $15 per rider through June 4th; $20 per rider after June 4th. City of Victoria Parks & Recreation | Summer 2016 5 Community Events Charlson Thun Bandstand Dedication Day Wednesday, May 18, 2016 - 5:30 pm The City of Victoria, in partnership with Community Involvement Endowment, Inc. and Charlson Meadows, is pleased to announce dedication plans for the Charlson Thun Community Bandstand. Dedication activities are scheduled for Wednesday, May 18, 2016 and will be held on the bandstand stage, located in downtown Victoria. 10:00 am - 2:00 pm: Jack and Kitty, an Emmy Award winning folk duo, based in Minneapolis, will be performing "on stage" throughout the day for selected Schools of Eastern Carver County classes. Jack and Kitty describe their program as "organic vaudeville folk"; the program is one of the "most in-demand" musical acts for children. The Jack and Kitty performances are sponsored by the Arts Consortium of Carver County. All Day: In concert with the mission of supporting community visual and performing arts, the Charlson Thun Community Bandstand Dedication activities will include an Eastern Carver County Schools "juried arts" program. Selected entries will be displayed in the Victoria Library and hosted by the Friends of the Victoria Library. 5:30 pm - Charlson Thun Community Bandstand Dedication Ceremony 6:00 - 7 :30 pm - FIRST ever Charlson Thun Community Bandstand concert-in-the-park, sponsored by the City of Victoria and concert-in-the park donors. The performers, the Rockin' Hollywoods, were inducted into the "Minnesota Music Hall of Fame" on November 2, 2007 and the "Minnesota Rock & Country Hall of Fame" on April 28, 2007. The group presents solid gold rock 'n roll through the decades with energy and excitement. Everyone is invited to the concert/party! The StoryWalk© Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library. Please note that StoryWalk© will be rescheduled for the July Movies in the Park in case of inclement weather. Friday, June 17 from 8:00-9:00 pm Tails for Reading Preschool and school age children are welcome to read books aloud to specially trained therapy dogs to encourage confidence in reading. Children read for a 15 minute session on a first come, first served basis. Minecraft Join your friends for open play on our MinecraftEdu server! Explore, build together, or participate in a challenge. For ages 8-18. Tuesday Tunes with Victoria Library The Victoria Library will host a variety of live musical performances at the Charlson Thun Community Band Stand this summer. This program is funded with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. All your child’s favorite farm friends will come to life! We’ll create puppies, horses, cows and more using several simple artistic techniques. This class is so much fun, it’s like having your very own petting zoo! Please pack a nut free snack and drink for your child. In each class, your child will be introduced to an activity through fundamentals, learning games and cooperative play. Come prepared for some high-spirited, active fun! Wear tennis shoes and bring an easy-to-open water bottle. Participants will be taught techniques for basic skating, while having fun and learning to skate with confidence. Figure and hockey skates are welcome, and protective head gear is required (bike helmets are acceptable). Arrive at least ten minutes prior to class to get your child ready for class. Skate rental is not available. Polar Bears Ages 4-6 9-9:30 a.m. Maximum of 15 students 8 Develop balance and posture. Introduction to forward skating, gliding, stopping and backward skating. This class is for children who have never skated before. Basic Skills I Ages 7-12 9:30-10 a.m. Maximum of 14 students Development of forward gliding, stopping, backward skating. Introduction to one foot glides and backward gliding. This class is for children who have completed the Polar Bears session or if participant can skate (with a glide) the length of the ice without falling . Introduction to cross-overs, spins, 2 foot turns and mohawks. This class is for children who have completed Basic Skills I or participant is able to glide on one foot, skate backwards and stop. Saturdays April 16-May 21 $50/child Victoria Recreation Center Registration Deadline: April 14 Youth Sports T-ball This co-ed program is a great place for your children to learn fundamentals such as hitting off of a tee, fielding, throwing and the basic rules of the game. The season includes short warm-up/practice sessions before each game; team t-shirt, end of the season award and the chance for team photos. The team photo date is June 20. Your child is guaranteed to be placed on a team if registration is received during either registration period. No registrations will be accepted after May 15, 2016. You will receive your team assignment after May 23, 2016. Early registration until May 8, 2016 Late registration May 9-15, 2016 Indicate your child’s t-shirt size on the registration. Victoria Parks and Recreation partners with the Carver Coach Pitch program, so expect some travel to Carver during the season. This program meets twice per week. The goal of this program is to develop players, have fun and become successful. The make-up day for a rainout will take place on the Friday of the same week. Session 2: June 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 & 30 Registration Deadline: June 16 Session 3: July 12, 13, 14, 19, 20 & 21 Registration Deadline: July 7 Session 4: July 26, 27, 28, August 2, 3 & 4 Registration Deadline: July 21 10 Little Stars Rising Stars Future Stars Ages 4-6 9-9:45 a.m. $80 per session This class will emphasize agility, balance and coordination. Little Stars are in the pre-rally stage of their development. Lessons will focus on growth of skills that will prepare them for the rally stage. At the end of each session there will be a skills festival where all participants will compete on teams to test their skills. Ages 7-8 9:45-10:45 a.m. $95 per session This class is the first stage in rallying. Rising Stars will play rally games by the second lesson. The final day of class will be full of games and competitions. Groups will be split up by ability so everyone can learn at their own pace. Kids will enjoy playing games while rallying the ball back and forth to work on techniques and tactics. Ages 9-11 10:45-11:45 a.m. $95 per session Future Stars will be rallying from the beginning of class. Groups will be split based on ability. The emphasis of this class is to teach participants the fundamentals of the forehand and backhand groundstrokes, volleys and serve. Point play is introduced in the second week in order to get kids ready for match play. City of Victoria Parks & Recreation | Summer 2016 Youth Programs Basketball Camp Golf Achievement Camps Campers at this co-ed basketball camp will learn the fundamental skills and advanced techniques including shooting, passing, ball handling, rebounding, finishing moves and defensive footwork. Instruction from positive and enthusiastic coaches, contests, and scrimmaging will be highlighted each day. T-shirts will be given to each athlete. The camp is led by Hoops Training Director, Andrew Dahl. Andrew played college basketball at Augsburg College in Minneapolis and has been helping athletes improve their skills through private lessons, group training, camps and clinics in the west metro since 2009. Your junior will enjoy the opportunity to develop new golf skills on this 18-hole course that can be enjoyed by golfers of all skill levels. You may provide your own equipment, if you do not have equipment, contact Holly at 952-443-4259 to make arrangements to use rental equipment. Golf Achievement Camps will meet rain or shine. This program is lead by PGA Professional and US Kids Master Coach Brad Pluth. Make new friends while getting to experience exciting new places. Staff will provide a fun, safe, and inviting environment. Bring a lunch, marked water bottle and a snack. Parents will be emailed additional details each week. Meet at the Victoria Recreation Center each time except August 5 (pick-up and drop-off at the Lowry Nature Center). July 15 - Big Thrill Factory, Minnetonka July 22 - SandVenture Aquatics Park, Shakopee Camp Tamarack July 29 - Park/Water Day, Victoria Recreation Center Summer is a time for exploring nature and forming friendships at camp. Come discover nature and friendships with this unique environmental education camp. Implementing crafts, games, songs, drama and mind-flossing activities, we will experiment, create learn and grow our brains! This non-competitive class is an excellent crosstraining experience for athletes of any sport. We use traditional yoga warm ups and sequences of postures to build strength, flexibility and coordination. Creating a practice that is truly unique by adding occasional yoga games, partner poses, and challenge postures. Each week we partner movement with breath work and simple meditation techniques that boost mindfulness, energy regulation and emotional intelligence. This class is designed for beginning students as well as practiced yogis looking for a slower paced practice. We move through traditional postures to warm muscles and explore the range of motion in our joints, moving into gentle strengthening postures and ending class with both deep stretches and restorative postures so that we go home feeling good. We will move from floor postures to standing, students must be able to bear weight on knees and wrists. We can modify postures to fit the needs of individual students.
