THE BIER BOOK - Cafe Benelux
THE BIER BOOK Bier is a huge part of Lowland Europe culture— as integral a part of the daily experience as waffles, frites, cafés, and bicycles. At Café Benelux, we take bier very seriously—from sourcing the best biers to perfecting the way each is served. Constantly on the lookout for great biers made in the Belgian tradition, we were recently named “Ambassadors of Belgian Bier” by the Grand Master of the Brussels Bier Festival. Each year, we comb the breweries, monasteries, and cobblestone streets of Belgium and Holland to locate rarities, oddities, and even exclusive selections to serve in our cafés. We visit plant managers, hop farmers, and importers of the world’s greatest breweries. We meet (and taste) with the monks, brew masters, and families who have made these biers their passion for centuries. Café Benelux is proud to present this selection of hand-picked biers for you to enjoy. table of contents Draughts4 Rarities & Exclusives 7 Wheat10 Saisons & Farmhouse Ales 12 Pilsners14 Blondes & Golden Ales 14 Trappists16 Pale Ales 17 IPAs19 Dubbels21 Tripels22 Quadrupels25 Strong Ales 26 Ambers & Reds 28 Dark Ales 30 Stouts31 Lambics32 Sours33 Touch of Fruit 34 Gluten-Free35 Macrobreweries35 Biermania36 2 3 Draughts Confession Grand Cru 9% 330mL$7 Lowlands Brewing Company Ertvelde, Belgium EXCLUSIVE! DuveL in Breendonk, Belgium Duvel is the flagship bier in the Duvel Moortgat family of biers, which includes the La Chouffe, Maredsous, Ommegang, DeKoninck, and Liefmans biers... among others. To commemorate the end of World War I, the Moortgats named their main beer “Victory Ale.” But during the 1920s, an avid drinker described the beer as “nen echten duvel” (a real devil in Brabantian Dutch) - perhaps in reference to its formidable alcohol content (8.5% ABV) - and the name of the beer was changed to Duvel. Considered by many the definitive version of the Belgian Strong Golden Ale style, the yeast still stems from the original culture of Scottish yeast bought by Albert Moortgat during a business tour of the U.K. just after World War I. Duvel is indeed a devilish beer. Its golden-colored appearance, delicate sparkle and refined, silky taste with complex aromas hides the high alcohol content. Lush aromas include citrus, apple, hops and yeast. Flavors of pale malt appear throughout, with strong yeast, hops and alcohol notes. Duvel’s distinctive head is created through bottle fermentation and its rich carbonation dances from an etched “D” at the bottom of its glass.
