1) Megadeth-Rust in
Peace: Live
Performing an album in
it's entirety can be a double
edged sword. On one
hand,it gives you the
chance to hear songs you
never get to hear live. On
the other hand,where's the
spontaneity? Fortunately,it
works really well for Dave
Mustaine and Megadeth.
Album classics like "Five

Magics" and "Poison was
the Cure" sound absolutely brutal in their non-studio versions. Filling out the set list
are better known songs like "Symphony of Destruction". Drummer Shawn Drover
and guitarist Chris Broderick (ex-Jag Panzer!) sound great here but the big news is
the return of bassist David Ellefson, who fits the bass role in Megadeth like no other.
With the metal mainstream finally remembering that thrash metal is still a
contemporary force,it's great to see Mustaine and the boys are up to the task.

2) Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band-Legacy
The name of Peter Rowans latest band leaves little doubt that they're all about
bluegrass. Their debut as a group features guest appearances by Gillian
Welch,Ricky Scaggs,Del McCoury and Dave Rawlings but the focus is,quite
understandably,on the fantastic band. In addition to Grammy winning singer/guitarist
Rowan, the band consists of Jody Stecher on mandolin,Keith Little on banjo and
Paul Knight on upright bass. All four members sing, pulling off classic vocal
harmonies, seemingly without effort. If your looking for traditional bluegrass played
by expert musicians,look no further.

3) Benny Goodman-Happy Session
Could this import Cd be the beginning of a reissue series of the LP era
Goodman catalog? Let's hope. This 1959 album originally featured four quintet and
six orchestral songs and now comes with three alternate takes and a previously
unreleased run through of "Cherokee". Plenty of juicy bits from Barney Kessel along
the way.

4) Various Artists-Califia:The Songs of Lee Hazelwood
This import compilation
packs a whopping 25 songs onto a disc that spotlights the songs of the
producer/songwriter Lee Hazelwood. Originally a disc jockey in Arizona,Hazelwood
scored his first hit with rockabilly artist Sanford Clark. He then went on to have a
string of instrumental hits with guitarist Duane Eddy. This Cd also features songs by
Ann-Margret,Dusty Springfield, and Dino,Desi and Billy (the 1960's version of the
Jonas Brothers). I was most pleased to see music by one of my personal
favorites,Al Casey (you all have a copy of Al's "Surfin' Hootenanny", don't you?)
Give this a listen and discover why Lee Hazelwood has a cult following among
musicians.

5) Lez Zeppelin-Lez Zeppelin I
Yep,that's no typo,it's L-E-Z Zeppelin. An all female Zep tribute with a gimmicky
name just begs to be dismissed as a novelty act but...wow are they good. While the
entire band is great, the highlight is guitarist Steph Paynes, who doesn't just get the
notes right, she really gets the soul and vibe. 1960's Jimmy Page tone can be a
tough one for modern guitarists,in part because it has less gain than you might
think. Here,Paynes has apparently gotten her hands on all the correct vintage gear
and recorded it all in wonderful analog. No gimmicks here folks.

6) Peter Walker-Rainy Day Raga
The Cd debut of the American folk guitarist's 1966 Vanguard album. Often
compared to John Fahey,Walker's music has a much deeper flamenco and classical
Indian influence.

8) Divination-Age of Man
Pennsylvania's death metal masters expand their sound into touches of prog and
thrash on their second album. The blitzkrieg speed and unrelenting vocals are still
in force, just with a wider palate of colors that should bring them to the eyes of more
metal fans.

9) Death Cube K-Torn from Black Space
Don't know who Death Cube K is? Fear not, that's no rapper name. It's no
coincidence that when rearranged, the letters spell out buCKet heaD. This
is Buckethead's name for his ambient project with bassist/producer Bill Laswell.
This go round also features DJ Submerged on "electronics". This is ambient music
of the deep, dark kind,no airport music here.

10) Neurosis-Live at Roadburn 2007
The fact that it takes 78 minutes to get through 9 songs is par for the course for
experimental metal band Neurosis. Recorded during the tour for "Given to the
Rising" ,it shows the band in all their sludgy,mid-tempo glory.
