 Ox Pasture Road Tour GENERAL INFORMATION:
The early colonists, with the help of a resident Shinnecock Indian guide, were led over an old woodland trail that is now North Sea Road to an ideal spot for their first settlement. There, at the head of what today is Old Town Pond, they constructed their first homes. The Shinnecock Indian Reservation, established in 1701, is the oldest Native American reservation in the United States. The Shinnecock tribe welcomed the arrival of the white settlers in 1640 and not only gave them land to live on, "Olde Towne", but also shared with the settlers their knowledge of planting corn and fertilizing it with fish, growing crops, digging clams and scallops from nearby bays and trapping game. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, fishing, farming (especially Long Island Potatoes and our local sweet corn) and duck raising were the predominant industries. With the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783 and the extension of the railroad to Sag Harbor in 1872, wealthy New Yorkers seeking escape from the ever growing city sought the serenity of our countryside and the beauty of our pristine beaches. This new emergence of substance and wealth caused a building boom during the early part of the twentieth century. The stock market crash of 1929 and the depression, which followed, marked a dramatic decline in construction throughout Long Island and Southampton in particular. As a result of these events, 1930 closes the village multiple resource area's period of significance. At present, Southampton and the South Fork in general is experiencing extensive modern (mid and late twentieth century) residential development which threatens what remains of the village's undeveloped land, the majority of which is cultivated. 275 Ox Pasture Road Continued This house also know as. "Tenacre" was designed for in 1920 by architect John Russell Pope. Pope's name might not be as familiar to the average American as say Frank Lloyd Wright or Stanford White's is, however Pope's work has probably been visited by more people than both Wright and White combined. The Jefferson Memorial, The National Archives, National Gallery Of Art and Constitution Hall in Washington D.C., Metropolitan Museum Of Art and The Frick Collection in New York City, Yale and John Hopkins Universities, where he worked on proposals with the James Gamble Rogers grandfather of one of my dearest friends the late Gamble Rogers of Florida. * Pope did residences on Long Island for William K. Vanderbilt, Marshal Field, and Charles A. Gould among other very prominent families. Author Steven McLeod Bedford has done a definitive work on him with his fine book, "John Russell Pope.... Architect Of Empire" 1988 Rizzoli Publications, NY. It was in this book, I found the drawing of "Tenacre" a Southampton residence for Joseph Palmer Knapp circa 1920 -­‐22. The fact that Knapp was only associated with the home for two years suggests to me he may of sold it when his wife Elizabeth Laing McIlwaine Knapp passed away in 1922. I do not know yet if it still stands, or suffered the fate of other Knapp homes. I will hopefully know the answer soon. Although "Tenacre" is very different looking than the Mastic Beach mansion of his children, from looking at some of Mr. Pope's earlier work from 1900-­‐1915, I would say it is highly probable he was involved with the Mastic Beach home too and the Tolfree Estate Island Manor House near Smith Point. Shortly after settling in, the Friedrichs jumped into the speculative real estate frenzy, buying mansions, renovating and reselling them. This is something of a retirement career for Mr. Friedrich, who with a partner ran the operations of Esprit, the sportswear company, for all of Europe and is still a board member. Together, the couple have bought and sold five multimillion-­‐dollar homes. Their sixth is a 12-­‐bedroom, 11-­‐bath mansion on nine acres with paddle and lawn tennis courts and a stainless steel conservatory that houses a swimming pool instead of plants.
